Viola Davis Oscars Speech: The Best Ever?

Viola Davis was expected to win Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 Academy Awards for her role in Fences. And Viola Davis was expected to give an especially poignant speech after her win for Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 Academy Awards for her role in Fences. Both these things happened on Sunday night. But that didn't make them any less dramatic or impactful. “People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?” said Davis early on in her acceptance speech, adding: “And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed.” She went on, explaining her rationale and showering praise on her industry in general. “I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.” The How to Get Away with Murder star continued to gush over the playwright behind Fences, which she described as, “a movie that is about people, and words, and life, and forgiveness, and grace.” Now the only black woman to have won an Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting, Davis referred to co-star and director Denzel Washington as her “captain” and told the actor: “Thank you for putting two entities in the driving seat: August and God. And they served you well.” Twitter quickly blew up after the speech was over with jokes over how the speech itself ought to be nominated for an Oscar or Emmy. Watch the entire thing below:

2017 Oscar Predictions: Will La La Land Set a Record?

La La Land is one of the most successful movies of the year.  It's evident that it's going to be a force to be reckoned with at the 2017 Academy Awards.  But will it win EVERYthing? Scroll down for our predictions. 1. Best Picture: La La Land La La Land has been critically and commercially successful since it was released and for good reason. It has already racked up a string of awards and nominations. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have this one in the can. 2. Best Director: La La Land Damien Chazelle is up against some stiff competition in this category, but there’s no denying that La La Land was a visual masterpiece. He should have no trouble eking out the win. 3. Best Actor: Casey Affleck The only real competition in this category is between Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington. With Casey’s continued praise, he seems poised to take the win. 4. Best Actress: Emma Stone Emma turned in a riveting performance in La La Land. In fact, she turns in a perfect performance whichever movie she appears in. Trust us, this one is as slam dunk as they come. 5. Best Supporting Actor: Dev Patel Patel has come a long way since his days of playing an angsty teen on Skins. He should win this award for his performance in Lion. 6. Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis Viola is an awards darling who continues to move from a successful movie to another. Her career has been great and her performance in Fences shows that she is showing no signs of slowing down. View Slideshow

Gabrielle Union’s Got A New Haircut — Do You Love It?

There are two things that are undeniably true about Gabrielle Union: She doesn’t look her age and her hair is always on point. Long, medium length, short — shorter, ol’ girl has the hair game on lock and she proved as much again last night.  The “Being Mary Jane” star stepped on the red carpet for the annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood gala in Los Angeles with a cut that was shorter than usual, and apparently totally spontaneous. “We just did this like a few minutes ago,” the 44-year-old told  People magazine  Thursday. “We were like, stop, ‘Let’s go shorter. Let’s go shorter.’ Larry Sims just took a hatchet to it and just hacked it off.” [ madamenoire ] Viola Davis Talks Self Care, Aging & What She Wants To Teach Her Daughter It’s award season and you already know Viola Davis, being one of the greatest actors of our time, is out here. In preparation for this weekend’s Oscar’s Refinery 29 asked the actress a couple of questions not only about her beauty regimen but also about self-care. Check out a couple of wise words from one of our favorites. Self care “You know what? Especially with women, we are usually the caretakers of everyone except for ourselves. If I don’t take care of myself and I’m taking care of my daughter or my husband or whatever — I’m running on fumes. I have nothing left to give. Nothing. But when I take the time to take care of myself, to go to the doctor, go to a spa, get a deep tissue massage, get adjusted by a chiropractor… I feel like I can face life with a renewed vigor and renewed passion.” [ madamenoire ] Beyonce Offers Support To LGBTQ Students After Trump Walksback Protections Beyonce offered some support to the LGBTQ community via social media as the Trump Administration walked back on protecting them from discrimination. The Trump Administration announced earlier this week that they are rescinding provisions that protected transgender students from discrimination in public schools. With the LGBTQ community now worrying about their civil liberties being protected, Beyonce has stepped forward to offer her support. In a Facebook post, Bey posted a link to the “100 Days Of Kindness” campaign which encourages people to post positive messages supporting transgender youth. So Many Bangers On The SAG Awards Red Carpet, Who Looked Best? Such a tough decision to make here. We thought so many of the ladies looked lovely on last night’s SAG Awards red carpet, we had a hard time deciding which looks to highlight. Taraji P. Henson was definitely one of our faves, along with Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Thandie Newton, Jurnee Smollett and Tracee Ellis Ross. This dress was definitely a winner in our book! We love the intricacy of Thandie’s dress too Viola brought simple elegance and we love it. Continue to see more looks, but don’t forget to weigh in on Who Looked More Bangin! SplashNews/WENN
