Today, we bring you the counterpart to that state and highlight the most peaceful places to live and visit. April 24 (Reuters) – Violence and its aftermath cost the U.S. economy some $460 billion last year, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace’s second annual United States Peace Index, released on Tuesday. Those costs – which include direct burdens like medical care for victims and the prison system and indirect factors like lost productivity – vary widely by state, with the most peaceful states bearing the lowest burden and the most violent spending far more. A state’s level of peacefulness is not the only factor that determines the economic toll of violence; its population and level of overall economic activity also has a strong influence. Dolla dolla bills ya’ll!!! A homeless man named Eddie saw Oprah Winfrey eating dinner on the patio of Scarpetta in Beverly Hills recently. Eddie asked her for a bowl of soup, and according to the New York Post’s spies, the media mogul did him one better: “Please, can we get him some money, get him a meal?” asked Oprah. As Scarpetta staff brought him a “feast,” one of Oprah’s dinner companions handed over a bunch of cash. Chef (and owner) Scott Conant posted the New York Post article on his Facebook page earlier that day. His only comment? “Wow!!” Scarpetta is a fine dining Italian restaurant where a plain (but delicious) tomato sauce spaghetti goes for $24. The restaurant has multiple locations across the country, and People points out that when Jay-Z ate at the Miami outpost in 2011, he left a $50,000 tip on a $250,000 bottle of champagne. Oprah’s generosity is legendary. In 2007, she founded the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls school in South Africa, which provides educational and leadership opportunities in a luxurious setting to underprivileged girls in the area. Throughout her talkshow, which ended in 2011, she emphasized charity and “paying it forward” as a sure-fire way to live the best life possible. Bieber sends a Borat-themed tweet to the California woman who accused him of fathering her child. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber went on a bit of a Twitter spree over the weekend, telling his millions of followers that it was time for a “RANDOMTWITTERHOUR.” While many of his tweets relayed innocuous thoughts on topics like Chuck Norris’ pajamas, his feelings about the content of fruit salad and how his track “Boyfriend” is really about the migration of birds, there was one tweet in particular that stands out. At the end of his “Random Twitter Hour,” Bieber had this message for Mariah Yeater, the California woman who accused Bieber in late 2011 of being her baby’s father. “And now #RANDOMTWITTERHOUR has come to an end….last one….,” he wrote. “Dear mariah yeeter [sic]…we have never met…so from the heart i just wanted to say…” He then tweeted to an audio link from the 2006 film “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” in which Borat says, “You will never get this, you will never get it, la la la la la la. He behind his cage. He cries, he cries and everybody laughs. She goes, ‘You never get this.’ But one time he break cage and he ‘get this’ and then we all laugh. High five!” Bieber wasn’t lying about his tweets being random as there hasn’t been any news on the Yeater/paternity front since late November when Yeater promised to submit her son for a paternity test , despite the paternity suit having been dropped. The tweet does stay on message with Bieber’s denial that he had anything to do with Yeater or her baby. The pop singer maintained his position on the paternity accusation during the entire process, even taking his own DNA test to prove that he wasn’t the baby’s father. “As far as the whole baby situation, it’s unfortunate that it had to happen like that,” he said in an interview at the height of the allegations. “People make false accusations, but things happen in this industry, and you have to keep your head high and be positive.” Related Artists Justin Bieber
‘I’d hope for them to live happily ever after, but it’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ right?’ Richard Madden says of Robb Stark’s romantic interest, Talisa. By Kara Warner Richard Madden in “Game of Thrones” Photo: HBO Another week, another gripping, wholly enjoyable episode of HBO’s hit “Game of Thrones.” Forgetting for a moment the frustrating continued existence of one Joffrey Baratheon and all the rather gruesome scenes in Sunday’s episode entitled “Garden of Bones,” let’s take a moment to appreciate one easy-to-watch scene: the meet-cute between would-be King Robb Stark and feisty nurse Talisa (Oona Chaplin). In the midst of all the blood, battles and complicated politics, might there be room for a real romance between two characters? MTV News was lucky enough to sit down with Robb Stark himself, Richard Madden, to get the scoop on this intriguing new story line. “Robb’s in a place where it’s the first time he’s met a woman, it’s the first time he’s had his head turned. It’s the first time he’s been in this position as this boy-King and the first time someone doesn’t bow down to him, doesn’t treat him like a King, doesn’t cater to all that,” Madden explained of his character’s interest in Talisa. “She asks him real questions, she challenges everything and makes him ask questions of himself, he’s kind of blown away by that, this kind of light in the darkness. He’s surrounded by all these men and by all this violence and hate and blood, and he’s got this woman there who kind of looks him in the eye and talks to him in a way he’s not used to and he can’t help but be intrigued by that. I think in the beginning he doesn’t even know his head’s been turned until we’re right into it.” So now we know there will at least be major head-turning, but no telling how long that will last in the twisted and dangerous world of “Thrones.” When asked for his thoughts on Robb and Talisa’s future as a couple, the Scot wasn’t at liberty to divulge gritty details, but did mention a hope for happily ever after, however unlikely that may be. “I’d hope for them to live happily ever after, but it’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ right? That doesn’t really happen often with anyone,” Madden said with a smile. “We’re going to see a lot of changes with Robb’s character this year and this woman is the first big influence that takes him away from following his head, usually his heart and his head are on the same page when it comes to decision-making and this woman takes him in a different direction and influences over the decisions that he makes and sets things on a different course with his mother as well that’s a huge kind of fracture between them,” he continued. “So I’m keen to see how that plays out on screen.” Do you think “Game of Thrones” is going to get romantic? Dwyane Wade’s Nephew Shot In Chicago Isht is REAL in Chi-Town. A nephew of Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade was shot and wounded in Chicago during a violent stretch in which 13 men were shot, two fatally, in America’s 3rd-largest city. Wade, a native of Chicago, confirmed his nephew was one of six men shot at a convenience store on the city’s South Side Thursday night by hooded men who fled in an SUV. One man died at the scene; four were in critical condition. There were three other shooting incidents Thursday in Chicago where gun violence has been on the rise. Wade’s nephew, whose name was not disclosed, was hospitalized as of Friday. Playing with his wounded relative in mind, Wade scored 30 points in the Heat’s 113-101 win over the Toronto Raptors Friday night. After the game, Wade said: You never expect to a get a call like that…Something I always focus on with my foundation when I go back to Chicago is to do what I can to stop the violence. To have one of your own family members be involved in it, it hurts. I just thank God that he’s healthy. … Thank God he’s going to get another chance. The shooting comes a week after Wade, LeBron James and Heat teammates wore hoodies to show their support for Trayvon Martin, the 17-year old shot to death by Neighborhood Watch supervisor George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla. Pattinson shoots his own hand in the teaser, signaling a return to director David Cronenberg’s subversive roots. By Kevin P. Sullivan Photo: Alfama Films This year’s unlikely MTV Movie Brawl champion, “Cosmopolis,” doesn’t have a set release date for the U.S., but a foreign teaser trailer showed up online on Thursday (March 22). The adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel stars Robert Pattinson as a young multi-billionaire who tries to get a haircut, but ends up on a wild ride in his limousine instead. Canadian horror master David Cronenberg directed the film, and the (NSFW) 30-second trailer signals a return to his extremely subversive roots. So make no mistake: We’re not in Forks, Washington, anymore. Here are the five key scenes from the teaser trailer for “Cosmopolis.” Ready, aim … Well, you can never accuse the “Cosmopolis” trailer of misleading the viewer. The crazy begins as soon as the trailer starts, when a naked woman aims a laser-guided stun gun at Pattinson’s chest and he encourages her to shoot. It’s a move that says, “Listen, this movie and this trailer are going to be insane. Brace yourself. And Twilight fans, enjoy shirtless Edward while you can, because he’s about to get shot with a stun gun.” Fire! We never see the naked woman fire the stun gun at Pattinson, but immediately after, he takes a shot at his own hand with an actual gun. And we see everything. Cronenberg has never shied away from violence or graphic material in general, and the shot certainly reminds us of that. Considering the kind of gore on display in “A History of Violence” and “Eastern Promises,” a point-blank gunshot to the hand might be just the beginning. That poor woman! It’s bad enough that Pattinson’s character, Eric Packer, does all of these terrible things to himself, but the trailer gives us a glimpse of his wife, played by Sarah Gadon . Sure, it’s great that her husband looks like Robert Pattinson, but who wants to put up with the guy shooting himself in the hand and having sex in a limo with someone else? “Cosmopolis” marks Gadon’s second Cronenberg movie, having just starred alongside Michael Fassbender in “A Dangerous Method.” There’s a better place for that Yes, what you’re seeing would be a quick shot of Pattinson urinating in the back of his limousine. With so much of the action in “Cosmopolis” taking place over the course of a day, mostly within that car, you have to imagine that Eric’s going to have to relieve himself once in a while. You have to applaud Pattinson for taking on what looks like a fearless role after riding so long on a franchise that succeeded on its familiarity. And suddenly, a giant rat The easiest way to make a strange trailer even stranger? Throw in a giant rat. We’re not entirely sure what’s going on here, but it looks like a group of people are carrying a large, fake rodent through the middle of Times Square. Yeah, we don’t get it either. Actor was arrested in Washington, D.C., outside the Sudanese embassy. The Oscar nominee was taken into custody outside the Sudanese embassy. According to MSNBC , the group was protesting Sudan’s blockage of food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains and aimed to bring attention to the treatment of the people in that area of Sudan. His father, journalist Nick Clooney, was also arrested, according to MSNBC, as well as Martin Luther King III, NAACP President Ben Jealous, Rep. Jim McGovern and Rep. Jim Moran and former Rep. Tom Andrews. Clooney and the other protesters knew that, because the embassy is private property, they would be arrested if they refused to move. MSNBC reports that the protesters were warned three times before police moved in. The group reportedly held a sign that read, “Sudan: Stop Weapons of Mass Starvation.” He told the large crowd at the protest, “We need immediate humanitarian aid into Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.” He asked “the [Sudanese] government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them, and stop starving them.” According to People.com , the group was then taken to a Secret Service van. “He’s being charged currently with disorderly crossing of a police line, which is a misdemeanor and he will be transported to the second district of the Metropolitan Police Department for processing,” Max Milien, spokesman for the Secret Service, told the site, noting that Clooney was being cooperative. “They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children,” Clooney’s rep said in a statement. “They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.” The actor has been trying to bring change to the area, even meeting with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Secretary Hillary Clinton and President Obama in the Oval Office on Thursday. One day before, he attended the White House state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron. He is expected to appear on “Hardball with Chris Matthews” on Friday.
Wow. At least someone is finally standing up to those super inflated movie concession prices! Movie theaters have long been the target of consumer ire when it came to rising ticket prices, but a man in Michigan feels the steep price for theater snacks is worthy of a lawsuit. Joshua Thompson, of Livonia, filed a class action lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court against his local AMC theater, with the aim of forcing film houses around the state to reduce their snack prices, the Detroit Free Press reported. “He got tired of being taken advantage of,” Thompson’s lawyer, Kerry Morgan, of Wyandotte, told the newspaper. “It’s hard to justify prices that are three and four times higher than anywhere else.” According to the publication, Thompson claimed in the suit that he used to bring his own snacks to the theater until AMC posted a sign on the doors banning any outside food and drinks. The suit accuses AMC Theatres of violating the Michigan Consumer Protection Act by charging grossly excessive prices for snacks, and seeks refunds for all customers who were overcharged, and a civil penalty against the company. In 2009, AMC Entertainment joined Regal Entertainment Group in banning outside food and drinks from entering its 300 theater locations. In a statement released at that time, Sun Dee Larson, vice president of corporate communications for Kansas City-based AMC Entertainment, said “AMC recently reviewed its company policy regarding outside food and drink and will no longer be permitting guests to bring in these items, as is the case with many entertainment venues. We are also reviewing and revamping our concessions menu, and we are vigorously investigating many new items to add to our locations nationwide, to provide our guests with as much choice and value as possible.” You think he has a chance of winning this one?
