Obama Gun-grabbing Speech video

“President Obama tonight failed to challenge old assumptions on the need for, and political possibilities of, reducing the gun violence – which he suggested should be done two weeks ago in Tucson,” complained Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation’s largest anti-Second Amendment group. Prior to his SOTU, it was reported Obama would mention gun control. He didn’t, although he did preface his speech with a tribute to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the wounded A

Mass Police, Firefighter Layoffs Begin In Camden, NJ

These seemingly unnecessary lay offs may make more damage and empty more pockets than this state is predicting, as we’re sure they expect to save a few bucks here; while removing patrol from their violence ridden streets. With the crime rate in Camden being five times the national average according to the FBI, we have to take a second to ask ourselves, what the hell is going on? Some police officers are turning in their badges as part of deep municipal layoffs that began today and that could be a blow to the quality of life in this city, one of the nation’s most impoverished and crime-ridden. As many as 383 workers, representing one-fourth of the local government’s work force, are expected to lose their jobs, including about half the police force and one-third of the city’s firefighters. Firefighters are planning to march to City Hall today, and Mayor Dana Redd is planning a noon news conference to talk about the layoffs in a city facing a huge budget deficit and declining state aid.

Maid Says Kelis’ Moneygrubbin’ Azz Won’t Pay Her For Services Rendered

Kelis must be spending that $25,000 a month in child support on tacky outfits cuz she sure ain’t using it to pay her bills. Her former maid claims the moneygrubbin’ musician failed to pay her for cleaning her house and took advantage of her immigration status to skip out on the bill. According to TMZ , Kelis’ housekeeper claims the R&B singer owes her $900 in unpaid wages but sources say, there’s one major problem preventing her from seeking justice … she’s an illegal alien. Reportedly, Kelis’ maid earned $150 a day for her work … and since she only worked one day a week, that means Kelis somehow fell six weeks behind on her payments and the housekeeper is currently trying to lock down a lawyer to see if she can file anything with the California Labor Commission. Tragic Irony: Housing Projects Named After MLK Show Sharp Increases In Violence

What do you get when you cross Dr. Martin Luther King with Malcom X? A street you can’t walk down. Only a day after celebrating the vision and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, a new study has been released showing that peace is hard to come by on streets named after the icon. Martin Luther King Jr. Houses on Malcolm X Blvd in NY is just one of many housing developments that have seen significant crime increases over the past year. Violence in city housing developments spiked last year, led by a sharp increase in Bronx murders and Harlem shootings, statistics show. Residents were not surprised. “You can’t avoid it,” Bronx resident Maria Rojas-Garcia, 61, said of the violence. “We got everything here. Just last summer a young man was shot in front of our building. “There is no peace.” Rojas-Garcia lives with her 83-year-old mother in the Edenwald Houses, the Bronx’s biggest housing project and one with a persistent gang problem. The Edenwald Houses is one of 14 developments covered by police officers assigned to Police Service Area 8, a division of the NYPD’s Housing Bureau in the east and north Bronx. Police did not have statistical breakdowns by housing development, but the numbers show that PSA 8 investigated 14 murders last year, up from two in 2009. There were 37 shootings at those houses, compared with 14 in 2009. Edenwald residents said they don’t need numbers to tell their story. Be careful, they say, or be ready. “People are animals here,” said Jason Miller, 17, an admitted member of the Inwood Jungle Kids. “They hurt each other for no reason. You have to hang with the right crew. “We’re the top crew so nobody messes with us.” Police said the increase follows a year of sharp decreases. “Nonetheless, any murder or shooting is one too many,” said top NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. “We address crime spikes experienced in public housing with housing impact deployments, sometimes coordinated with precinct and transit impact teams, among many other strategies.” Shaquin Cameron, 20, has her own strategy – she moved out and is majoring in sociology at SUNY Albany. Her friend, Ta’Neyah Frazier, 19, would love to follow suit. “I want to leave here too.” she said. “It’s all I’ve known. I wonder what life is like, life outside here.” Such an option is less likely for Daniel Lewis, who has lived in Harlem’s Martin Luther King Jr. Houses for all but one of his 57 years. The development is just a few blocks from the north end of Central Park, but his surroundings are anything but pastoral. Busted door locks invite troublemakers, gunshots are fairly common and kids can’t play in the courtyard without fear. “It’s getting worse,” he said. Police statistics show 54 people were shot at Manhattan projects last year, compared with 37 in 2009. The sharpest increase occurred on the grounds of the developments in Harlem, East Harlem and Spanish Harlem, with shooting victims rising from 21 in 2009 to 40 last year. “I don’t even let my kids go to the window – and I live on the 12th floor,” said Christina Andrades, 34, a stay-at-home mother of three. “The bullets fly around here.” It looks like the only thing these people have a dream about is bussin’ a cap in your azz. Crazy White Folks Buying More Glock Pistols After Arizona Shooting Spree

SMH: After a Glock-wielding gunman killed six people at a Tucson shopping center on Jan. 8, Greg Wolff, the owner of two Arizona gun shops, told his manager to get ready for a stampede of new customers. Wolff was right. Instead of hurting sales, the massacre had the $499 semi-automatic pistols — popular with police, sport shooters and gangsters — flying out the doors of his Glockmeister stores in Mesa and Phoenix. “We’re at double our volume over what we usually do,” Wolff said two days after the shooting spree that also left 14 wounded, including Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who remains in critical condition. A national debate over weaknesses in state and federal gun laws stirred by the shooting has stoked fears among gun buyers that stiffer restrictions may be coming from Congress, gun dealers say. The result is that a deadly demonstration of the weapon’s effectiveness has also fired up sales of handguns in Arizona and other states, according to federal law enforcement data. “When something like this happens people get worried that the government is going to ban stuff,” Wolff said. Arizona gun dealers say that among the biggest sellers over the past two days is the Glock 19 made by privately held Glock GmbH, based in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria, the model used in the shooting. Sales Jump One-day sales of handguns in Arizona jumped 60 percent to 263 on Jan. 10 compared with 164 the corresponding Monday a year ago, the second-biggest increase of any state in the country, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation data. Handgun sales rose 65 percent to 395 in Ohio; 16 percent to 672 in California; 38 percent to 348 in Illinois; and 33 percent to 206 in New York, the FBI data show. Sales increased nationally about 5 percent, to 7,906 guns. Federally tracked gun sales, which are drawn from sales in gun stores that require a federal background check, also jumped following the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech, in which 32 people were killed. “Whenever there is a huge event, especially when it’s close to home, people do tend to run out and buy something to protect their family,” said Don Gallardo, a manager at Arizona Shooter’s World in Phoenix, who said that the number of people signing up for the store’s concealed weapons class doubled over the weekend. Gallardo said he expects handgun sales to climb steadily throughout the week. Permissive Laws Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old accused in the shooting, has a petty criminal record, yet so far there’s no evidence that his background contained anything that would have prevented him from buying a handgun in Arizona, where limits on owning and carrying a gun are among the most permissive in the country, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a gun- control advocacy group. Critics have focused on the extended magazine used in the shooting. It was illegal until 2004 under the expired federal ban on assault weapons. The clip — still banned in some states and popular in Arizona, gun dealers say — allegedly allowed Loughner to fire 33 rounds without reloading. Democratic Representative Carolyn McCarthy of New York said this week that she plans to introduce legislation that would ban the high-capacity magazine. McCarthy’s husband was one of six people shot to death in 1993 by a lone gunman on a Long Island railroad train. Her son was among the 19 people wounded. “The fact that the guy had a magazine that could carry 33 rounds, he was not out to just kill. He was there to do a mass killing,” said Dr. Lawrence Kobilinsky, a forensics expert at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. Virginia Tech Light and easy to use, a Glock 9 mm was also wielded by the Virginia Tech killer, Seung-Hui Cho, in a spree that left 32 people dead. The gun is among the most popular sidearms for U.S. police departments. A negative for law enforcement is that the rifling of the barrel makes it almost impossible to match a bullet to an individual weapon with ballistic tests, Kobilinsky said. “It’s one of the greatest guns made in the history of the world,” said Wolff, whose two stores sell Glock-made weapons almost exclusively. When Loughner allegedly walked into Tucson’s Sportsman’s Warehouse last November to buy a Glock 19 — favored as a concealed weapon because it is slightly smaller and lighter than similar caliber handguns — federal law would have required a background check via the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, a telephone-based check administered by the FBI. Background Check Loughner would have had to present his driver’s license and answer several questions, including queries on past drug use, domestic violence or felony convictions. Wolff said in most cases the check takes less than five minutes and the number of denials he receives is a tiny fraction of the total. Wolff called the shooting “horrible.” Nonetheless, it has created a surge of publicity for the gun, he said. “It’s in the news now. I’m sure the Green Bay Packers are selling all kinds of jerseys today as well,” he said. “I just think our state embraces guns.” Arizona law allows anyone to carry a gun in public if it’s in full view, making it what’s known as an open-carry state. Until recently, gun store owners say, it was common to see people carrying weapons in grocery stores or coffee shops. That’s less true today, because last year that state passed a law allowing individuals to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. Gun Law Rating Daniel Vise, senior attorney with the Brady Campaign, said Arizona received a score of two out of 100 on the organization’s rating of state gun laws, and that the rate of gun deaths in the state is one and a half times the national average. Brady Campaign spokeswoman Caroline Brewer said that some states require local law enforcement agencies to approve gun permits, a system that would have given authorities a chance to further assess Loughner, whose behavior acquaintances have described as erratic. Loughner tried to buy ammunition the morning of the shooting at a local Wal-Mart Stores Inc. outlet, then left during the sale process, according to a statement by the company. “If a clerk at Wal-Mart picked something up and refused to sell this guy some ammunition, we can certainly imagine that law enforcement would have picked that up as well,” Brewer said.
