E arlier in the month, a video went viral of Alexander McNab being harassed by six campus cops at Barnard College , an all-women’s school affiliated with Columbia University in New York City. But while the video caused outrage from staff and faculty, one student went out of her way to claim that McNab appearing to be racially profiled had nothing to do with his brown skin. SEE ALSO: Students Suspended For Brawl While Cop In Video Who Assaulted One Of Them Goes Unpunished The student, who described herself as a “(very) light-skinned Jewish woman” named Morgan Raum, defended campus security in a piece she recently authored for the Columbia Beacon, an alternative campus publication. “I would much prefer Barnard Public Safety officers prioritize safety rather than political correctness,” Raum wrote . “The fact of the matter is an adult male entered a closed women’s college campus after 11 p.m. and repeatedly refused to show his identification to Public Safety officers, despite admitting that he knew about the rule. To be honest, I’m upset he was allowed to get as far as Milstein before the officers took action.” Raum went on to say McNab was stopped simply because of his gender, an excuse that rings hollow since there are always male students from Columbia on Barnard’s campus. “For context: Columbia students have access to Barnard libraries. After 11 p.m., students are supposed to show their IDs to public safety before entering campus. But this rule is loosely enforced and hardly followed. I have always just nodded to the officer. Nothing like this,” Andrew Wang , who identified himself as a Columbia student, wrote in his tweet below that includes a video of the incident. This happened yesterday at Barnard College. In case you missed it, McNab refused to show his ID to security officers who the same demands for identification from students of color. Officers eventually physically assaulted McNab inside a campus building even after he handed them his identification, another fact the “very light-skinned” Raum failed to acknowledge. “I didn’t violate anybody. Get your hands off of me,” McNab says to the security officers. After looking at McNab’s ID card, one of the officers responded, “Let’s walk outside.” McNab said he feared going outside with the officers and wanted to stay inside the building where there were witnesses. Instead of examining his ID and allowing him to go, the officers confiscated McNab’s card, saying they needed to verify that he was an “active” Columbia student. As of Tuesday morning, the security officers were reportedly still on leave and Barnard was hiring an independent investigator. According to ABC News , a Ukrainian comedian proved this to be true when he was elected as the president of Ukraine by a landslide. According to a national exit poll, Volodymyr Zelensky received 73% of the vote, knocking out the country’s incumbent president Petro Poroshenko , who conceded defeat. Zelensky will now lead one of the poorest countries in Europe which is still in a war with Russia that has killed 13,000 people since 2014. The 41-year-old presidential elect called his win a symbol for political change for other countries in the region. “I’m not yet officially the president, but as a citizen of Ukraine, I can say to all countries in the post-Soviet Union, look at us. Anything is possible!” No lies here. Zelensky’s win comes in the midst of deep dissatisfaction among Ukrainians with their political establishment, and weariness with the war. He ran on a platform of fighting corruption and upending the political elite, which is viewed as corrupt and indifferent to the concerns of everyday Ukrainians. Zelensky’s opponent, Poroshenko, is a 53-year-old billionaire confectionary tycoon who came to power on the back of mass protests in 2014 that toppled the country’s then-Russian-backed president, Viktor Yanukovych. He was one politician who couldn’t shake the perception that he supported corruption, thus Zelensky seemed like the better choice for many. “On the one hand, it’s not the best president for me, but at least he has no experience in corruption or all the things that our politicians have,” said Anna Dysheleva, a marketing executive. Despite promising to root out corrupted officials and end the war, Zelensky has barely made any detailed policy proposals. He’s also avoided the media and refused interviews. He mostly campaigned as a version of his on-screen persona, and instead of political rallies, he held stand-up comedy shows. Smh. On Zelensky’s T.V. show Servant of the People , Zelensky plays a schoolteacher who gets catapulted into the presidency when his rant about corruption goes viral. Once president, he dodges the traditional perks of his office and battles oligarchs who usually direct Ukrainian politics. Ironically, Zelensky came to power in spite of his relationship to one of Ukraine’s most controversial oligarchs, Ihor Kolomoisky, whose television channel, 1+1, airs Zelensky’s show. Kolomoisky has been in effective exile ever since Ukrainian authorities nationalized his bank, Privat Bank, accusing him and his colleagues of stealing billions of dollars from its account-holders. Some folks now fear Kolomoisky will follow Zelensky into power. Regardless, there are still some citizens and activists who support Zelensky. Prominent liberal journalist and member of parliament, Serhi Leshchenko said, “There is huge room for people to join his team with reform-minded orientation. The viral study claims beard gang has MORE GERMS than DOG’s fur. It can’t be… HuffPost reports: Researchers at the Hirslanden Clinic near Zurich, Switzerland, wanted to determine whether evaluating humans and dogs in the same MRI scanner would be hygienic. They did so by comparing the bacterial load in colony-forming units (CFU) of human-pathogenic microorganisms in specimens taken from 18 bearded men and 30 furry dogs. The researchers also compared the extent of bacterial contamination of an MRI scanner used by both dogs and humans with two other MRI scanners used exclusively by humans. Turns out all the bearded bros showed high microbial counts, compared with only 23 out of 30 dogs. “On the basis of these findings, dogs can be considered as clean, compared with bearded men,” study author Andreas Gutzeit told the BBC . Founder of the Beard Liberation Front, Keith Flett, is standing up for our bearded baes , however, telling the Daily Mail in a rebuttal… “I think it’s possible to find all sorts of unpleasant things if you took swabs from people’s hair and hands and then tested them. I don’t believe that beards in themselves are unhygienic. “There seems to be a constant stream of negative stories about beards that suggest it’s more about pogonophobia than anything else.” Welp, that’s that on that. So you can imagine the excitement that swept the Internet and the nation at large after Netflix released Homecoming today, the documentary that took viewers behind the scenes of Beyonce’s legendary Coachella performance in 2018 . While talking about the rehearsing and general lifestyle changes she needed to make in order to take the stage at that festival last spring, Beyonce also opened way up about her second pregnancy for the first time. She spoke in stark and very personal detail about growing Sir and Rumi in her womb. “My body went through more than I knew it could,” the beloved artist said, noting she grew to 218 pounds toward the end of her pregnancy and that she developed high blood pressure and toxemia along the way. (Toxemia, also known as preeclampsia, is a pregnancy condition that causes high blood pressure and can lead to serious complications.) When it came time to deliver, one of the baby’s heartbeat paused several times, Beyonce says in the film, spurring her to have an emergency C-section. Scary stuff. And also very real stuff to which numerous women around the world can relate. In another candid segment of her documentary, Beyonce says she was scheduled to perform at Coachella in 2017. What happened? Why was she forced to skip this concert at the time? “I got pregnant unexpectedly,” she says in Homecoming, as footage of her showing off her baby bump plays in the background. “And it ended up being twins which was even more of a surprise.” We think this is the first time Beyonce has confessed that she wasn’t planning on giving Blue Ivy any siblings — but that, hey, even global superstars make these sorts of “mistakes.” Following the birth of her twins, Beyonce’s Coachella performance marked her major return to the stage, but it did not come easily. “There were days that I thought I’d never be the same,” she explains, adding that she cut out carbs, sugar, alcohol, dairy, meat and fish in order to get back into shape. “My body was not connected. A ridiculous mom went ballistic in a mall after she was told that, no, her small child could not pet the service dogs. The woman's bizarre meltdown was caught on video. But she didn't stop with an angry lecture. She went crying — literally — to mall security. A woman named ML Leigh, who is decidedly not pictured here, shared a video to Facebook and provided context. “Had this crazy experience yesterday at the mall,” Leigh's post begins. She found herself in a situation “where some lady asked if she could pet the dogs.” “People ask us all the time,” she laments. “So I just said, 'no.'” “All the dogs are working,” she explains. “So it’s my go to answer.” As it should be. Service dogs should never be distracted by other people because they have literal jobs to do — sometimes, these jobs are life-saving. “And they walked away,” Leigh narrates. “No big deal right?” Leigh reveals: “This lady went out of her way to come back with her child.” “And,” she writes, this woman proceeded to “yell at us for saying 'no.'” Apparently the woman chided her for her answer “and for not saying, 'nO iM sOrRy ThEy’Re TrAiNiNg.'” We love that she adopted a Spongebob meme to convey her tone of mockery. “And,” Leigh writes, the woman insisted that “we should 'have a sign or something.'” While that's an absurd request, Leigh makes it clear that she has already done so. “You mean the 20 patches on my dog that say don’t pet?” Leigh asks rhetorically. She then accuses: “Entitlement these days is real.” There we have to disagree with Leigh. This kind of weirdness has always been around. It's just that now we all have cameras an an internet with which to share our different tales of it. Leigh recorded the encounter, which also included another woman. “They even got mall security,” Leigh announces. She marvels at the fact that they contacted security “because we said they couldn’t pet the working dogs.” “Security said that the lady was crying,” Leigh reveals. We have to wonder if that woman is always like this, or if she was just at the end of a crazy day. Regardless of possible explanations, there is no excuse for her behavior. “So much harassment,” Leigh laments. “For just saying no.” “This video is public,” she writes. “And is shareable.” The video ended up going viral. “There was no common sense here,” she concludes. Despite a lot of whining about service animals, they serve a vital role. Some provide comfort for people with sensory issues or PTSD. (For example, a service dog can help someone distinguish between delusional experiences, unimportant background noises, and emergencies) Others monitor people for seizures or for blood sugar levels and begin barking if they detect a serious medical problem. They must never be distracted from doing their jobs. But even if these weren't service dogs, if someone says “no,” just go “okay” and keep moving like a normal person, you weirdo.
