The investigation into Jussie Smollett has taken more twists and turns than an Empire season finale. In the latest unexpected development to emanate from what had originally appeared to be a simple (albeit horrific) case of assault against the star, Smollett has released a statement through his legal team. It seeks to end speculation that Smollett actually staged the attack late last month in which he was allegedly beaten and taunted by a pair of racist assailants. This is what Smollett’s attorney said late Saturday on his client’s behalf: As a victim of a hate crime who has cooperated with the police investigation, Jussie Smollett is angered and devastated by recent reports that the perpetrators are individuals he is familiar with. He has now been further victimized by claims attributed to these alleged perpetrators that Jussie played a role in his own attack. N othing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying. How did we possibly get to this point? It’s a long and convoluted story… Smollett told Chicago police that he was savagely beaten early on the morning of January 29. He told authorities back then that the two suspects screamed yelled that he was in “MAGA country,” that they tied a rope around his neck, that they poured bleach all over him and that he eventually took himself to a hospital for treatment. The case made national headlines. Numerous 2020 Presidential candidates sent their thoughts to Smollett, celebrities everywhere showered him with support and Donald Trump told the press it was a “horrible” incident. Donald Trump Comments on Jussie Smollett The beating was referring to in the press as a “hate crime” and a “modern-day lynching.” Shortly after this story went viral, however, the police and the media were given reason to have some doubts. Smollett, for example, reportedly refused to turn over his full cell phone records to the cops. According to a new TMZ article, the police were also suspicious after Smollett took them to the scene of the alleged crime and immediately pointed out an obscure security camera in the vicinity. Questions were raised internally over how Smollett know about this camera and whether he actually planned the attack to occur within the sight of it. Then… two arrests were made in the case . However, the men arrested were brothers from Nicaragua who actually worked in the past as extras on Empire. They knew Smollett somewhat well. This raised even more questions, along the lines of: Would two African-Americans really scream racial epithets at Smollett? Might Smollett have paid these associates off as part of an elaborate hoax? This theory is now gaining quite a bit of momentum. For starters, the brothers were released without being charged — and the reason given by Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi certainly raises a bunch of eyebrows: “We can confirm that the information received from the individuals questioned by police earlier in the Empire case has in fact shifted the trajectory of the investigation.” View Slideshow: Jussie Smollett: Did He REALLY Stage His Own Attack?! The latest update from CNN also begins as follows: Two law enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation tell CNN that Chicago Police believe actor Jussie Smollett paid two men to orchestrate an assault on him that he reported late last month… Multiple outlets claim that Smollett paid the siblings $4,000 in exchange for their role in the assault. Why would he do this? Presumably, sources have alleged, because he was being written off Empire and thought producers would change their minds after he became such a sympathetic figure on the national stage. It’s worth noting, however, that all executives and writers associated with Empire have strongly denied having any plans to let Smollett go. As you can see, this is a confusing and disturbing case all around. Either Smollett really was the victim of a violent hate crime… or he’s lying about it. There’s no in between at this point. Speaking to Robin Roberts of Good Morning America last Thursday, Smollett insisted he was telling the truth. “It feels like if I had said it was a Muslim or a Mexican or someone black I feel like the doubters would have supported me a lot much more,” Smollett said. “And that says a lot about the place where we are as a country right now.”

Although there’s nothing wrong with honoring our forefathers by dressing up as them or reading about the same people — educators these days understand the importance of creativity and fun when it comes to teaching young Black kids about their history. Social media has sparked a trend of teachers decorating their door with Black cultural icons of the past and present, all with the help of a little construction paper. One of the first decorated doors to go viral was Glen Mourning , a 4th grade reading teacher at Friendship Public Charter School in Washington D.C. Sincerely, your ancestors.” A photo of Lake Alfred Elementary School teacher Chanique Davis’ classroom door also made its rounds on social media. I mean, who doesn’t want to see features of a young Black girl rocking a tilted crown, natural hair and kente cloth during Black History Month. Davis told Edweek , “In a lot of corporate American settings, they don’t allow such a style. I wanted [my students] to know that this style is to be celebrated—it’s not to be shunned and it’s not anything negative. It’s a beautiful style, and … it’s just like anyone else’s hair: It’s welcomed, it’s celebrated. Since they are learning about the Martin Luther Kings and the Malcolm Xs in other settings, I want to be the one to let them know there are people who are currently adding to black history.” Anecia White of Harvest Preparatory School opted for the beautiful Black woman visuals too. She told People magazine “My source of inspiration for the door was every student in my classroom. They inspire me to be a better teacher every day, and I hope to inspire them to continue to learn about themselves.” Only two weeks left of Black History Month. It’s always upsetting to hear that someone is foolish enough to not vaccinate their children . But the wife of a White House aide is taking things further than decrying vaccines. In a pair of tweets that went viral in the worst way, she claims that having the measles keeps you healthy and fights cancer . Bill Shine is an aide to Donald Trump. His wife is Darla Shine. It turns out that, just as Trump struggles to understand climate science, Darla is unable to grasp medical science. “Here we go LOL #measlesoutbreak on #CNN,” Darla tweeted. She then tagged her tweet: “#Fake #Hysteria.” “The entire Baby Boom population alive today had the #Measles as kids,” she claims. This, as we will address later, is known as survivor bias . Darla does more than merely express doubt at the necessity of vaccinations. She actually welcomes the return of easily preventable diseases. “Bring back our #ChildhoodDisease,” she writes eagerly. With regard to those once-defeated ailments, Darla claims: “they keep you healthy & fight cancer.” That is, just to clarify, completely untrue. In fact, there was a recent case in which a small child beat leukemia only to die from exposure to measles. “I had the # Measles # Mumps # ChickenPox as a child and so did every kid I knew,” Darla writes. Sure. These preventable diseases were once acceptad as an unpleasant and sometimes fatal fact of life. “Sadly my kids had # MMR,” she writes. ” So they will never have the life long natural immunity I have.” She concludes her contrarian nonsense, writing: “come breathe on me.” Darla is unfortunately not the only famous person proud of her ignorance on medical science. As we continue, we will include photos of some other famous people who should really, really know better. (Jenny McCarthy is possibly the celebrity most synonymous with anti-vaccine ideology, though she does not quite embrace that title) While we don’t object to Darla Shine’s invitation for people to expose her to airborne illnesses, her tweets are nothing short of absurd. First of all, as we mentioned, “everyone who’s alive survived it” is called survivor bias . Similarly, everyone who has been shot and lived survived a gunshot. That doesn’t mean that gunshots are safe, or not deadly. Measels can also cause lifelong problems even for those who survive. Also, just as vaccines do not cause autism, measels do not bestow some special protection against cancer. But, you heard the lady. By all means, go breathe on her. (Kailyn Lowry of Teen Mom 2 fame recently revealed that she no longer vaccinates her children, which is disappointing fo fans who thought she was a good mom) “My friend’s daughter is deaf because of LOL measles,” responded one tweeter, mocking Shine’s tone. “LOL childhood diseases contracted during pregnancy cause serious birth defects,” the tweet continues. That same tweeter then wondered: “Does this LOL at preventable misery reflect the WH press office position.” We should note that there are unfortunately anti-vaxx people on both sides of the political aisle. (Kylie Jenner has shared a number of bizarre conspiracy images, including chemtrails and anti-vaxx hoopla. We hope that this does not impact Stormi) Fortunately, the CDC’s literal entire job is controlling disease, so they are not ambiguous about the importance of vaccines. “Children should get two doses of MMR vaccine,” the CDC states. “Starting with the first dose at 12 to 15 months of age.” “And,” the recommendations continue. “The second dose at 4 through 6 years of age.” “In the decade before 1963 when a vaccine became available, nearly all children got measles by the time they were 15 years of age,” the CDC notes. “Also each year, among reported cases, an estimated 400 to 500 people died,” the CDC reminds the public. (Jim Carrey has unfortunately expressed some troubling views that lead people to believe that he is opposed to vaccinations) The World Health Organization has noted a 30% uptick in measles cases worldwide, though vaccine hesitancy is only one of the factors. Some of those opposed to vaccines believe that they may cause autism. This is false, but it is deeply troubling to hear people imply that they would rather see their child dead than autistic. Some people, such as those who are immuno-compromised, cannot be vaccinated. They rely upon herd immunity to avoid potentially fatal ailments. Sadly, anti-vaxx parents do not seem to care. Source: Stephen Green / Getty The ‘Empire’ Actor Recalls A Traumatic Night J ussie Smollett is finally speaking up after reports of his brutal attack by racist, homophobic MAGA must. Smollett sat down with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America for his first interview detailing his attack last month. He said he was in the middle of picking up some food from Subway in Chicago and was on the phone with his manager when someone called him a racist and homophobic slur. Jussie said a guy in a mask then punched him screaming “This MAGA country ni**er,” and Jussie punched him back, which resulted in a short scuffle outside. He said a second unknown guy jumped in, kicking Jussie in his back. In the interview with Robin, Jussie also addressed the doubters who might’ve thought he was lying about the whole incident: “I have to acknowledge the lies, and the hate. And it feels like if I had said it was a Muslim, or a Mexican, or someone black, I feel like the doubters would have supported me much more. A lot more. And that says a lot about the place that we are in our country right now… It’s not necessarily that you don’t believe that this is the truth, you don’t even want to see the truth. Smollett, who portrays the openly gay musician Jamal on Empire , said he suffered injuries to his clavicle bone and ribs during the attack. However, some still questioned his story: “For me, the main thing was the idea that I somehow switched up my story, you know? And that somehow maybe I added a little extra trinket, you know, of the MAGA thing,” Smollett said. “I didn’t need to add anything like that. They called me a f—-, they called me a n—-. There’s no which way you cut it. I don’t need some MAGA hat as the cherry on top of some racist sundae.” Jussie also addressed rumors that he was in the middle of a late night love visit when he got attacked. “I’ve heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative,” he said. “I’m not gonna go out and get a tuna sandwich and a salad to meet somebody. That’s ridiculous. And it’s offensive.” Jussie was actually hanging with his friend and creative director Frank Gatson in an apartment, and they got hungry, which prompted the Subway visit. Smollett said the only reports he heard that were inaccurate were the ones claiming the attackers were wearing MAGA hats, which they weren’t. Smollett also explained why he was initially reluctant to hand over his phone to the police: “They wanted me to give my phone to the tech for three to four hours. I’m sorry but — I’m not gonna do that. Because I have private pictures and videos and numbers: my partner’s number, my family’s number, my castmate’s number, my friends’ numbers, my private emails, my private songs, my private voice memos.” Jussie didn’t even want to call the police at first, but Gatson did it on his behalf. When the cops arrived, they said they found Smollett in his apartment with stained clothing and a “white rope draped around” his neck, according to the report. “I was looking at myself, just like checking myself out. I saw the bruise on my neck, you know, like the little — the rope burn around my neck,” he said. “So when the police came I kept the clothes on, I kept the rope on me. … I mean, it wasn’t, like, wrapped around. But, yeah, it was around because I wanted them to see.” Jussie said he believes the photos released of the two possible suspects are accurate. He’s hopeful that the police will track the culprits down, and he hopes his story will inspire other marginalized groups: “I think people need to hear the truth,” Jussie said. “Cause everybody has their own idea. Stephanie Yeboah posted a story on Twitter explaining a situation where she was subjected to a “#PullAPig” date from a white man who asked her out only on a dare from her friends. She’s since elaborated on the story on Refinery29 and explained how she met the man named “Robert” on Bumble and agreed to go on a date with him. Mind you this was her first date in two years. Stephanie says Robert seemed to prefer that she was plus-size and noted that sometimes on dating profiles she felt obligated to mention her weight. “It seems a bit silly to have to declare something as trivial as one’s weight on an app, but due to how a large percentage of plus-size women are treated in the dating world, some of us choose to add a note about our weight to our profiles, almost as some kind of ‘disclaimer’. It’s even worse when your weight intersects with something such as race or gender.” When their date night finally came Stephanie posted a picture on Twitter noting that she was “terrified” but ready to go meet the man for drinks. A friend of Robert reached out and told Stephanie that Robert stopped contacted her because he’d been “dared to pull a fat chick” and successfully did so even winning a sum of money his friends had pooled. The term for a cruel joke like that is “pull a pig”; a dating prank that involves either pulling an unattractive or plus-size person. Stephanie recapped the humiliation she felt on Refinery29 and said she was mortified. “I felt sick. A wave of embarrassment and humiliation washed over me, and I went into my bathroom and cried. I had been terrified of meeting and talking to men for fear of them judging my appearance. As much as I know that I am an awesome person, I’m blindingly aware that the way I look is not what mainstream society considers to be ‘beautiful’, and that’s something I always have to think about and carry with me.” She also added that she shared her story to raise awareness about the dip-sh***d dummies targeting plus-size women. She says however that men, in particular, are trolling her about it and suggesting that she lose weight to be treated like an actual human being. “Luckily (or maybe unluckily?) I had already deleted Robert’s number from my phone after not hearing from him for a couple of weeks, so I have no way to contact and chastise him for what he did. I decided to ignore the friend’s email and used Twitter to tell my story, in the hope of opening up the conversation about the way plus-size women are treated. My aim was to raise awareness, and while I received some amazing, positive feedback, it also came with its share of trolling and horrible comments – almost all from men, who were either laughing at the situation or suggesting I change my appearance in order to be treated better next time.” Wow, people are disgusting.
