The convention for The National Association of Black Journalists or NABJ kicks off every year for journalists, students, and media-related professionals. There, folks learn firsthand key strategies in media, socialize professionally, and seek career opportunities. This year it took place in sunny & humid Miami, Florida. Cunningham, Aiesha Letman (myself), Jason Lee and, Alex Ford. Bruce Wright, managing editor of our fellow Interactive One site News One was also there to assist. In the workshop, our writers were asked the FAQs behind the manufacturing of a standout headline, regardless of the voice of the publication. Attendees learned about the importance of headline writing as it pertains to ideation and creating viral moments. And…when is a headline too far? Jason Lee was there to assist with the latter. Of course, this question was directed at our site, specifically. So, how do we not “cross the line”? What is offensive or ‘racist’ to white folks? Jason says, ‘As far as (mayo), aioli and those sort of things…if white people are offended by certain things, then that’s fine but the dynamic is different. We are a Black site, we are Black people, normally we’re the oppressed people. So, if the worst you have to deal is being called a ‘mayo-packet’ behind somebody who did something racist, something stupid, then in my mind, you kinda have to chalk that.’ New One’s Bruce Wright had an important point to add, saying: ‘I don’t think we should only single out Black media for doing what the original media created and is still doing on now.’ Alex Ford probably in one short sentence gave the crux of what you need to create a viral moment. ‘We’re not just writing these headlines for you to just see them and laugh. If you read some of the posts, their actually well-written, comedically. Also, your use of language. Find that one word that represents what you’re trying to say. Hannah Brown was hoping to have other plans this past weekend. Maybe she and Jed Wyatt would be choosing a band for their wedding. Brooke Houts, a well-known YouTube personality with over 337,000 subscribers, is under major fire right now after a video went viral in which it appears she is spitting on her dog and also hitting the animal. It is very disturbing to watch. The footage was accidentally uploaded to her account, various outlets have speculated, after Houts meant to post an altered version of her “plastic wrap prank on my doberman” video. In the shocking video, viewers see Brooke smacking the innocent pooch, who is named Sphinx, multiple times. She also screams at him and forcefully shoves the canine to the ground, all while recording something for YouTube that she meant to edit into some sort of humorous post. The footage has drawn the attention of the Los Angeles Police Department. “Our Animal Cruelty Task Force has received numerous complaints about the video, an LAPD media representative told The Verge. “And we are currently looking into the matter.” As for what may have happened here? The current version of the video, which had its comments disabled and was downvoted over 27,000 times, does NOT include any of these digusting and violent clips described above. Hence why many are assuming Houts never meant to upload the original, complete version. Following the immediate and understandable outrage over the video — which we refuse to share here — Houts issued a lengthy apology and explanation on Twitter. “I want to clarify that I am NOT a dog abuser or animal abuser in any way, shape or form,” she wrote, adding: “Anyone who has witnessed or heard true animal abuse will be able to clearly see that.” Not exactly the strongest defense, that second sentence. Continued the social media user: “I want to address the uncut footage … I’m clearly actually frustrated [in the video]. That being said, this does NOT justify me yelling at my dog in the way that I did, and I’m fully aware of that. “Should I have gotten as angry as I did in the video? No. Should I have raised my voice and yelled at him? No. “However, when my 75 lb. Doberman is jumping up in my face with his mouth open, I do, as a dog parent, have to show him that this behavior is unacceptable.” The YouTube personality also claimed that she’s working on her own behavioral issues, too. “I know I’ll be in many future situations where he’s being physical, but I will not respond this way again,” she said, continuing as follows: “I am getting my dog into training, and I’m looking at ways to improve how I personally train him at home. … I know that I am a great dog mom (but not perfect)… “I’m just explaining what my day-to-day life is really like, whether you believe me or not.” Again, can’t say any of these words makes us very sympathetic to Houts. How about you? Reaction has been swift and disparaging. Heck, even disgraced YouTube star Logan Paul had harsh words for Houts, Tweeting this message: “discipline your animals should they misbehave. i get it “but despite the hitting, the spitting is a totally unwarranted, inappropriate, and vile display of energy that makes this woman completely unfit to own that dog.” Houts, of course, says she did not spit on the dog. But, hey, it’s not any of us that she needs to convince. It’s the police.

Beside the usual discussion surrounding the record breaking song, Billy Ray Cyrus also revealed some brand new information about his process when making his contribution. According to the Kentucky native, the writing process for his verse took only about “eight to ten minutes” for him to do in its entirety. Once he was finished putting pen to paper, the record label was mostly happy with it, except for one line. “For some reason I thought it would be funny to say, ‘Baby’s got a habit: diamond rings and marijuana,’” the country singer revealed to Taste Of Country . “See? I thought it was funny. That song could’ve DONE something,” he continued as the hosts laughed. The label ended up coming back to Billy with some simple notes about his verse: “everything but the marijuana.” In the end, after establishing that putting a line about weed in the song probably wouldn’t be their best move, somebody suggested that Billy say “Fendi sports bras” instead of “marijuana.” “And I thought, well, it’s probably good, because I don’t know what that is,” Cyrus explained to the hosts. Parker Mustian, 16, posted a video last month filled with hateful rhetoric while threatening gun violence against Black men. Local outlet WOLO-TV reports : A local 16-year-old has been charged with ‘Student Threats,’ after videos were shared of him making racial and violent threats. The teen was a student of Cardinal Newman School, but is now banned from the property. Although these events transpired last month, school parents were just made aware of the investigation this past weekend, and now one of the racially-charged videos is going viral on social media. According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the teen was taken to the juvenile wing of Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on July 17. The 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said it cannot release any update on the status of the case because it involves a minor. Cardinal Newman Principal Robert Loia says in a letter sent to families Sunday, that it’s important to clarify the timeline surrounding the threatening videos. On July 13, Cardinal Newman School leaders were contacted by a parent of a student that had received a graphic and racist video made by the 16-year-old male student. In the video, the teen is shown shooting a box of Jordan’s, which he says ‘is the favorite pair of shoes for a black man.’ Right. Initially, the sheriff’s department didn’t view Mustian’s video as a criminal act but when Mustian threatened to shoot up the school after being withdrawn by his parents instead of facing expulsion while accepting a ban from its property, only then did police decide to arrest the boy on July 17.
