Occupy Times Square: New York Marches For A Cause

‘There’s no dollar amount that can fix anything that I can ever hope to achieve in my life,’ one protester tells MTV News. By Natasha Chandel Demonstrators rally at the Occupation Party Photo: Natasha Chandel / MTV News NEW YORK — Occupy Wall Street might have started as a small demonstration September 17, finding a home in New York’s Zuccotti Park, but since then, it has grown into a revolutionary movement, spanning 951 cities in 82 countries. On Saturday night (October 15), an Occupation Party was to start at 5 p.m. ET sharp in New York’s Times Square. At around 4:45 p.m., a few hundred people had congregated. By 6:30 p.m., the number had easily reached the thousands. An extension of Occupy Wall Street, the Occupation Party had gathered in the hub of New York consumerism, Times Square, to peacefully yet heartily protest corporate greed, nationwide unemployment and unethical governmental practices. They set out to march from their starting point back down to Wall Street. Comprised of an eclectic mix of individuals, the rally saw folks playing music, dancing and chanting slogans such as “This is what Democracy looks like” and “We are the 99 percent.” Within the thousands were three young individuals who expressed the gamut of frustrations with “the system”: Janet Imobisa Age : 25 Location : Virginia Fighting for : Job creation A senior in college, Janet recently lost her job as a call-center employee because the positions were outsourced to Singapore. “I was laid off, and I’m currently receiving unemployment, and it’s so hard to find a job, and my unemployment is running out,” Janet told MTV News. Janet is one of millions without a job and losing hope. According to the U.S. Board of Labor, the current unemployment rate in the U.S. is 9.1 percent, up more than 5 percent from the year 2000. “My future is in jeopardy,” a cheerful but clearly anxious Janet said. Jen Ventriglia Age : 26 Location : New York Fighting for : Hope Standing atop a plant above the crowd was Jen, a young woman working two jobs at Edible Arrangements and UPS to pay her way through her full-time program in college. “It’s all in preparation for a future that might not exist anymore because there are no more jobs. There’s no dollar amount that can fix anything that I can ever hope to achieve in my life,” Jen said. An aspiring entrepreneur, Jen cited the drop in value of the American dollar and taxes as the obstacles standing in the way of her dreams. Peter Olsen Age : 25 Location : New York Fighting for : Equality In the middle of the enormous crowd was a small hole. It seemed to be the epicenter, and everyone had formed around it. The attention seemed to be going to a young man in glasses and a red glass earring through his ear. Peter Olsen was one of the facilitators of the Occupation Party. The friendly young man was adopted from poverty-ridden Colombia by his parents, a couple from Westchester County in New York, but Peter found himself ostracized as a minority. “I was discriminated against. My parents adopted me because they thought I’d be in a better position here. Now I’m worse off than I would have been,” said Peter, who told us he has four degrees and six certificates. Not only is he working in a Verizon store, but he still feels out of place. With their futures hanging in the balance, Janet, Jen and Peter still smiled on, protesting to have their voices heard. These are just a handful of stories from within the Occupation Party, a march that has been compared to 1995’s Million Man March. Whether it reaches such heights remains to be seen, but it was clear that the demonstrators came together for one common cause: change. And they won’t take “no” for an answer. Chris Brown: Banned From UK, MJ Tribute Show?

Rumors are circulating that Chris Brown is banned from the UK and thus unable to perform at the Michael Jackson tribute concert in Wales this past weekend. Not so fast. Brown’s rep says his criminal record played no role in his non-appearance and that rumors he was “banned” are simply false. So why didn’t he perform then? He was invited. What got in the way was a simple scheduling conflict. “His previously booked domestic F.A.M.E. tour dates didn’t allow him to accept the honor and therefore he never planned to go to the UK,” said Brown’s rep. The rep reiterated to TMZ a second time that “He was not banned.” Brown spent the weekend performing in Tampa, Charlotte and Virginia Beach, dates that had been scheduled before he was asked to join the Jackson show. In other fake Chris news, Karrueche Tran is not pregnant, either!

LISTEN: Irate Viewer Leaves Death Threat For Director of Worst Movie EVER!

It’s been a while since we checked in with the team behind The Worst Movie EVER ! — which is to say with Glenn Berggoetz, the actor/filmmaker/no-budget impresario whose gonzo epic set a record for box-office futility with an $11 opening . Things have been mostly looking up since then: There was a relatively well-received screening down in Virginia, and, according to Berggoetz, exhibition interest everywhere from a domestic TV syndicate to Brazil, Japan and beyond. But! There have been bumps along the road as well — ugly, anonymous, death-threatening bumps.

Michaele Salahi-Neal Schon Affair: Wildly Sexual, News to Tareq!

The theory that someone kidnapped Michaele Salahi was quickly debunked … but the truth was even weirder, which is standard fare for the Salahis. As we reported last night, the White House party crasher and Real Housewives of D.C. star was not abducted. She was with Neal Schon of Journey. Michaele’s husband Tareq was apparently as blindsided as everyone else, saying he considered Neal and his band members “friends” … until now. Contrary to Tareq’s belief that his wife had been kidnapped, Michaele Salahi in fact was with Neal in Tennessee, bouncing from one Journey concert to the next. Tareq has been crying hysterically, according to reports, saying he feels his life is over because Michaele is all he lived for and she’s having an affair with Neal. Whatever their status, they are well are acquainted. The band recently came to their winery in Virginia, played for free and stayed with Tareq and Michaele. Moreover, just two weeks ago, Tareq and Michaele went to a Journey show and hung out backstage with Neal and a woman named Ava at the Virginia show. Tareq says that’s Neal’s wife, which would make this even more absurd … but either way, Michaele was reportedly bragging about their “wild sex” recently … Sources say Michaele and Neal first met in 1998 – while she was engaged to Tareq – and the two felt an instant attraction. In 2009, things came to a head. We’re saying the relationship turned sexual, and profoundly so. Michaele bragged to friends about it, which is not a good way to keep adultery secret. Last week, apparently, Michaele decided it was time to make a move. She ditched Tareq Tuesday to meet up with Neal and hasn’t looked back since. Tareq legitimately felt she had been abducted, making this all the more devastating for her husband. He’s told friends he feels “betrayed” by his wife. Don’t stop believin’, Tareq, things will turn around. Sorry. [Photos: WENN.com]

SMH: Montel Williams Gives The Shady Salahis A Ho Sit Down For Attempts To Tie Him To Their Fraudulent Event

Those shady Salahis are up to their usual skullduggery but Montel Williams ain’t having it! The talk show host is putting those Salahos on full blast after they announced he would be attending an event at their “winery.” Here’s the official statement from his spokesperson Jonathan Franks: “It has come to our attention that a group claiming to be associated with Tareq and Michaele Salahi have announced that Mr. Williams will be attending an event at their Oasis Winery in Virginia and that Montel Williams’ MS Foundation is also a supporter – neither is true. The use of Mr. Williams’ name without his permission is unacceptable, and Mr. Williams’ attorneys intend to pursue all available legal remedies in this matter.” “Even worse, it appears that the Salahi’s, whose bizzare behavior has been widely reported, are attempting to piggy-back off of Montel’s record of advocacy on behalf of MS sufferers worldwide to advance the apparent re-opening of their failed winery. That is inexcusable exploitation of those afflicted with a terrible disease.” “Throughout the day yesterday our office was been contacted by multiple governmental agencies, including law enforcement investigating the group responsible for this event. Aside from pursuing all civil legal remedies available, Montel’s office intends to cooperate with regulators and law enforcement investigating this matter.” This is terrible. These crooks need to be locked up already. And the grand re-opening of their winery??? We thought that place was going up for auction! We’ve got the screenshots of the fraudulent event announcement that definitely mentions Montel by name as well as the cease and desist letter sent by Montel’s lawyers below:

Katy Perry, Lil Wayne And More (Possible) VMA Winners

Bigger Than the Sound guesses who will take home Sunday’s biggest Moonmen. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: Graham Denholm/ Getty Images The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on MTV this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, but if you’re a Katy Perry fan, well, you probably knew that already. After all, the California Gurl is the most-nominated artist at this year’s VMAs, leading the pack with an eye-opening 10 nods, including Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and the biggie, Video of the Year. Following closely behind her are the likes of Adele, Kanye West and Bruno Mars, but really, all eyes will be on Perry. Will she take home her first-ever Moonman? Will she sweep the night’s major categories? And, most importantly of all, what color will her hair be? Of course, KP’s not the only story line heading into Sunday’s show: Can Gaga win the only major award she’s up for? Can Tyler, the Creator shock the world? Luckily, I’m here to provide answers. Much like I’ve done in previous years (and mostly because I have a rather insatiable gambling addiction), I’m throwing on the old prognostication cap and trying my hand at picking the winners in all the major VMA categories. Of course, while I can’t guarantee my accuracy, I can promise you that I spent, like, 25 minutes on this, which is a pretty thorough investment. Oh, and for the record, I’m going with “puce” for Katy’s hair color. The rest of my picks right now: Best Male Video
