VMA Firsts: Gaga’s Wins, Chelsea’s Hot Tub Pregnancy And More

The meat-suit-wearing Gaga became biggest single-night female winner in VMA history. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Mark Ralston/ Getty Images We here at MTV News like to think that history is made every time we put on a Video Music Awards ceremony. Over the course of nearly three decades, we’ve provided you with some of the most indelible images in pop music history, from the Britney-Madonna kiss to last year’s Kanye/Taylor Swift moment and dozens of others in between. Sunday night’s show was no exception, with another flood of VMA firsts provided by eight-time winner Lady Gaga , West and, of course, randy host Chelsea Handler. Here are some of our favorite VMA firsts from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Meat suit : Artists have worn anything and everything you can imagine to the VMAs over the years, but nobody has ever worn a dress made out of what looked like some choice cuts of meat, accented by a meat hat, flesh purse and steak boots. Gaga raised the ire of PETA when she first modeled the suit on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan, and likely did it again when she slipped into the outfit to accept her night-capping Video of the Year win for “Bad Romance.” The singer subsequently visited the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” to explain the meaning behind her carcass couture. Hot tub : We’ve had a lot of odd things on the stage over the years, from Britney’s snake to giant puppet theaters, but never, it turns out, a hot tub. Leave it to the cast of “Jersey Shore” to bring their signature hang-out spot of choice to the festivities. Setting up onstage, the cast invited VMA host Chelsea Handler to join them in the tub, which she reluctantly did. Pregnancy : Though last year’s VMAs were the first we can recall that resulted in an engagement (between host Russell Brand and Katy Perry ), Sunday night’s show had the distinction of being the first where a host was impregnated during the broadcast. OK, technically, it was a gag and you can’t get pregnant just floating in the “Jersey Shore” Jacuzzi, but still. D-bag : Kanye West was on his best behavior this year, but that doesn’t mean the Louis Vuitton Don minded all his p’s and q’s. Closing the show with the starkly funktastic debut of “Runaway,” Kanye broke new ground by becoming the first artist to debut a new song featuring a chorus employing the go-to insult of the moment: douche bag. Hats off, Kanye! Meet cute : The VMAs have played host to some unique pairings over the years (Sting and Diddy, anyone?), but it has never featured a first-time onstage pairing by a couple of artists who’ve already scored a radio smash without ever meeting. That was the case Sunday when B.o.B took the stage with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for a run through his “Airplanes” just a day after finally meeting for the first time face-to-face. Octo-win Lady Gaga became the most decorated female VMA winner in the history of a single VMAs show on Sunday night when she took home eight Moonmen. While she still has a way to go to match the all-time VMA champ, Madonna, who has 20 total wins, in just her second year of VMA eligibility, Gaga quickly jumped into a tie for fourth place with Green Day for all-time wins at 11. She also set a record for the second most wins in a single VMAs broadcast, nearly usurping Peter Gabriel’s seemingly untouchable mark of 10 in 1987 for his groundbreaking “Sledgehammer” video. Bike lane : Performers have arrived at the VMAs on yachts, fire trucks, semis and in any number of tricked-out vehicles, but 30 Seconds to Mars set a new eco-standard on Sunday when they rolled up to the pre-show on their custom bicycles, paying homage to the theme of their VMA-winning “Kings and Queens” video. He said, she said : An unprecedented incident calls for an unprecedented response. That might explain why both Kanye West and Taylor Swift seemed to make pointed comments on last year’s run-in with the new songs they debuted during the show. While Swift took a conciliatory route with her as-yet-untitled song, in which it appeared she forgave Yeezy for his indiscretions, West appeared to flagellate himself for his rash actions (see “D-bag” entry above). The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Eminem, Other Performers Find Fitting Home In VMA Set

Eye-popping design puts mid-century architecture ‘through the prism of 2010,’ says show’s executive producer. By James Montgomery The VMA stage during Usher’s rehearsal Photo: Ciel VanderVeen/MTV LOS ANGELES — Sure, stars like Lady Gaga, Eminem, Kanye West and Justin Bieber are getting top billing at the Video Music Awards. But all of that might change the minute the show goes live on Sunday (September 12), because there’s a much bigger star waiting to steal their thunder: the VMA set itself. Custom-made in New York and Los Angeles, assembled over the course of two (very long) weeks inside the Nokia Theatre and drawing inspiration from the sleek mid-century designs of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the set is a massive, all-encompassing thing, swooping and soaring (like, really high ) and practically swallowing up the entirety of the theatre itself. It’s so impressive, in fact, that you don’t have to be an architecture enthusiast to appreciate it. “Everyone who walks in and sees it is like, ‘Aaah!’ ” Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. ” Rick Ross came in and said, ‘It’s like Pandora.’ ” Without revealing too many details — mostly because details don’t really do it justice — the VMA set is a multi-tiered, multi-layered design that stretches more than 70 feet out into the theatre seats, and just as high in the air. There are portions made out of tightly stretched fabric, giving the set a living, organic feel. A giant panoramic video screen stretches behind the entirety of the thing. There are LED lights everywhere . And, of course, there’s . Yeah, it’s a pretty big deal. “What we wanted to do is to use this black box — which is what the Nokia is — in a kind of different way. We tried to create a more intimate space, and that’s one of the reason why we created a kind of center stage and brought it much closer to the audience,” production designer Florian Wieder said. “What I tried to do was create a kind of three-dimensional space, where the entire space is part of the show. We use it all … the whole ceiling, the floor, the walls. It’s really an impressive thing.” And while the design is based on the sort of classic mid-century architecture that defines Los Angeles, the set, much like the show itself, is far from stodgy. Quite the opposite, in fact. “It’s based on mid-century architecture, only put through the prism of 2010,” Sirulnick said. “It’s classic design that reaches through the eras, just like the music itself.” Like we said … you have to see this thing. Sure, Gaga and all the stars are great, but the set is really something too. Tune in and see for yourself. Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Get me in the VMAs of the Day

I hitched a ride to NYC with a group of idiots. I crashed on couches cuz I am poor. I defied all odds and border patrol, all to get the the VMAs that I only found out about when I got here. I have no hook-ups and need you to tell your friends…so word gets around that the most useless blogger is ready to crash parties… If you know people at Make a Wish Foundation, tell them your fat friend with AIDS is ready to redeem his gift. I don’t have AIDS but I do have the capacity to pretend I do…. If you have a cousin, a brother, an uncle a sister who once fucked someone who worked at MTVs cousin, brother, uncle or sister….hit them up for me.. Email me at info (at) drunkenstepfather.com Make magic happen for me….even though I know no one is reading this and if they are, they are losers with no hook-ups and if they are hooked up, they aren’t helping me… But I am desperate and it is worth it… On a sidenote I saw Jared Leto and he looks real bisexual. He was with Shenae “I got a black name” Grimes….and she was ugly as fuck in person… Next stop, Lohan’s vagina….

Usher’s VMA Performance To Be Worthy Of A ‘King’

Awards-show executive producer teases Ush’s ‘best televised dance routine’ in years. By James Montgomery Usher’s VMA rehearsal on September 9 Photo: Ciel VanderVeen/MTV The success of Usher’s “OMG” is as much a testament to his unyielding popularity as an artist as it is his ability to, well, dance his ass off. That’s particularly apparent in the Video Music Award -nominated video for the song, which features Ush and a bevy of beauties popping, locking, pivoting and posing in ways we never thought possible. Quite simply, the man can move. So when it came time to plot out his VMA performance, well, Usher’s team — and the brain trust behind the show — didn’t have a whole lot of trouble coming up with a concept. The dancing was going to be front and center. The only question was: How could they take things to the next level. “We all sat in a room and came up with a concept for the stage, and then we took that concept to Usher,” VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News. “We said to him, ‘We want to do the best televised dance routine that you’ve done in years. Let’s show why you’re the king.’ ” And Ush’s Sunday night performance is very much an affair worthy of royalty. Full of eye-popping moves, hip-dipping dancers and more special effects than a Hollywood blockbuster, it makes full use of not just the epic VMA stage (which practically engulfs the entirety of Nokia Theater), but the space behind it. While we can’t give away too many details, based on the rehearsals we saw Thursday, the off-the-wall choreography is only part of the attraction. There are lasers and LED lights, stunts, slides and even some props. Like we said, it’s kind of like a Hollywood blockbuster. And kind of a coronation too. After all, Usher is the king. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Jay-Z Crafts The Ultimate Blueprint: A VMA Cheat Sheet

The 40-year-old MC is rewriting the hip-hop handbook, powering through perhaps his most dominant year yet. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z performs at Comerica Park on Thursday in Detroit, Michigan Photo: Getty Images Although it’s been almost exactly one year since Jay-Z Alicia Keys took their hometown anthem to the World Series , performing the number before game 2 of the baseball championships between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Roc Nation CEO then rode shotgun with Alex Rodriguez during the Yankees victory parade in Manhattan. As the celebration wrapped, Jay performed his tune, which Derek Jeter had used as his at-bat music throughout the playoffs. Jay-Z scored a big win on his own just a month after the Yanks clinched the chip when he earned his first career #1 record as “Empire State of Mind” topped the Billboard Hot 100. The iconic MC has amassed a total of 11 number one albums, but this was his first solo #1 single . As is nearly always the case with Jay-Z, business was good, too. He became a Broadway producer, along with Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, when he invested in the Tony-winning Broadway play “Fela!” The investment was among one of the many money moves that helped Jay-Z to top the Forbes “Hip-Hop Cash Kings” list this year, the third time in four years he’s done so. 2010 also started off on the right foot as Jay-Z took home the award for Best International Male Solo Artist at the Brit Awards . Domestically, Jay boasted about hearing his music playing in the background when he called President Barack Obama . He later visited the White House with his wife, Beyonc

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Other VMA Stars Get Expert Fashion Advice

Experts dish their advice for making the best-dressed list … and avoiding the worst-dressed list. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Paul Warner/WireImage The VMA show is a stomping ground for eclectic fashion — both good and bad. And that means that when the show kicks off on Sunday with everyone from Lady Gaga to Ke$ha to Katy Perry hitting the red carpet, people will be talking by the watercooler for days to come about what those fashionistas wore to the big show. In the past, Lady Gaga has stunned at the VMAs in her Victorian-style dress, Perry has embraced her pinup-girl roots, and Taylor Swift has sparkled and dazzled in sequins. While it’s unknown who will show up wearing what to Sunday’s big show, some fashion experts have some key advice for staying off the worst-dressed list. Faran Krentcil, Nylon magazine’s digital director, credits Gwen Stefani as a VMA fashion “do” and says that the only way to make the best-dressed list come Sunday is to make the effort to be on it. “I think you have to first decide that you want to be on the best list because some people just want attention. So if you want attention, then do whatever you want,” she advised. “What you need to do is get a good stylist to help you pick stuff out. You need to worry a lot more about what looks good on your body than what’s trendy and probably take whatever you’re the most proud of in your music and translate that into fashion.” Celebrity stylist Derek Roche advises that if you want to do VMA fashion right, resist the desire to overdo it. “I think the easiest way is not to think. It’s about simplicity,” he explained. “People think they have to go and be all dolled up and they have to compete with Rihanna and Beyonc
