‘When I made this record, I was just like, ‘Sean would be dope on this,’ ‘ Tyga says of adding Big Sean to the song. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina Tyga and Big Sean on the set of their video for “I’m Gone” Photo: MTV News Tyga and Big Sean display quite the chemistry on “I’m Gone,” the new, heartfelt single off of the Cali MC’s sophomore album, Careless World. But the song only tells half the story. This week Tyga premiered the song’s Colin Tilley-directed video as an MTV Jam of the Week. MTV News caught up with the pair back in April when they shot the clip in a Lynwood, California, warehouse. “The video concept is me leaving stuff behind, like my girl, and then driving the car, then nobody driving the car,” Tyga explained. His description may have seemed a bit cryptic then, but now that the visuals have finally dropped, it all makes sense. Opening with a shot of the Young Money rap standout sitting alone on a barstool with his head hung low, it is clear that the bright lights have taken their toll on Tyga’s love life. “Looking around glass, my future is in the past/ I’m rearranging my life, I’m single and now I laugh,” he spits to begin the song. The somber track is quite emotional and wouldn’t seem to call for a guest verse. In fact, Tyga first intended for the single to be a solo affair, but when it was complete, he just heard a spot for his buddy Sean. “When I made this record, I was just like, ‘Sean would be dope on this,’ ” the tatted-up rapper said. “The record was already done — that’s why Big Sean is at the end of it. We made the beat longer because I was just like, ‘Let’s just add him to it.’ ” Sean, who closes the track out with reflective lyrics of his own, jumped on the song without hesitation. “I had already liked it off the rip, I liked the sample, I liked the vibe of it,” he told us. “He sent me the song and it was perfect. I remember I had just got done with my show in Houston. I knocked it out right after.” In fact, Sean’s voice was still hoarse from the performance he delivered just hours before, but it all worked out in the end. “My voice was half gone — I don’t know if people could tell, but my voice was damn near gone when I recorded it,” he revealed. “I just came up with the whole thing on the spot.” What do you think of Tyga’s “I’m Gone” video? This weekend sees the release of Dark Shadows , marking the eighth time director Tim Burton has teamed with Johnny Depp , his second-favorite performer on screen. (He no doubt frequently has to tell Helena Bonham Carter as much.) So natural is their pairing that we have come to expect a certain level of quality and/or box-office performance from their combined efforts, and an announcement of a new Burton title has generally come to carry the expectation of a Depp appearance. Although Hollywood has long brought us such fruitful and lucrative actor/director relationships — from both Cary Grant and James Stewart’s collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock to Robert De Niro’s legendary work with Martin Scorsese — consider nine other long-term pairings packing a little (or a lot) less luster. Héctor Elizondo / Gary Marshall After Marshall cast character actor Elizondo in his feature directing debut, soap-opera spoof Young Doctors In Love , the two became friends to such an extent that the actor has now appeared in every one of Marshall’s 17 movies. Be it the modern fairy tale Pretty Woman , to the retro fairy tales of The Princess Diaries , or Marshall’s latest unwatchableholiday pictures, Elizondo always manages to steer things a bit closer to the side of classy. Matt Walsh / Todd Phillips As Phillips rose up the Hollywood ladder with his frat-boy-centric films he has done two things: struck box office gold, and taken actor-comedian Matt Walsh with him. Walsh has the kind of face you note, if not outright recognize, thanks to a long career of comedic appearances. But this co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater is arguably best known as the doctor to whom the Vegas revelers turn for information in The Hangover , and Walsh worked with Phillips for a sixth time in the follow-up, Due Date . Many of those roles found him playing a character by the name of Walsh. Michael Par

We look at Britney’s $15 million deal and what that kind of reality TV money can buy. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears Photo: Splash News Online $15 million. Sure, on the surface that numbers seems pretty gaudy, especially when you consider it’s for one season of work on a reality TV show that will add up to maybe one month’s work in total for Britney Spears . But we’re talking Britney here and when you aim to reel in the big fish you have to use a really big worm. That might explain why Simon Cowell has gone all-in to get Spears to join him and L.A. Reid on the panel of “Factor” this fall. Spears had been rumored for the gig for months, but considering the low profile she’s kept since her string of personal problems several years ago — which included a nearly total retreat from interviews and unscripted public appearances — the idea of Britney agreeing to appear on live TV twice a week seemed remote. Cowell typically gets what he wants, though, and now the world is going to see more of Britney than we have since her late 1990s heyday. What does that $15 mil buy you? We break it down … by the numbers: $12 million : That’s the figure that Jennifer Lopez reportedly earns for her gig on “American Idol.” We’re not exactly sure what fellow former “Mickey Mouse Club” veteran Christina Aguilera makes for each season of “The Voice,” but she reportedly banks $225,000 per episode, which could add up to nearly $10 million a season. 10,721 : The approximate number of copies of Spears’ Circus album that you could buy with $15 large. 15 : The number of Paula Abdul’s you could pay for one season of “X Factor” for the price of one Britney Spears. $131.8 million : Total grosses for Britney’s 2009 “The Circus” tour. $1.5 billion : Total global grosses for Spears’ various fragrances, which have sold more than one million bottles in five years. 15 : Number of high-end music videos you could make based on the $1 million price tag of Britney’s 2004 clip for “Toxic.” 750 : That’s how many $20,000 bras you could buy based on the reported cost of the super high-end 18K gold brassiere Spears wore in her Twister Dance promo. 3 : The number of “X Factor” winners who could get paid with Britney’s salary for one year. $485 million : What would be left over after you subtracted Britney’s paycheck from what Beyonc
‘Obama, congratulations on being the first sitting president to support marriage equality,’ Gaga tweets. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images While his likely opponent in the fall presidential contest, Mitt Romney, dug in his heels and doubled down on his opposition to same-sex marriage, President Obama continued to earn praise from the entertainment community for his historic support of gay marriage . After hearing from stars including Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Kim Kardashian on Wednesday, the list of well-wishers grew to include everyone from Lady Gaga to hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, Alec Baldwin and political blogger Meghan McCain. “Obama, congratulations on being the first sitting president to support marriage equality,” tweeted Gaga . “Feels like the future, and not the past. #NoFear.” Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons simply said “thank you,” and singer Michelle Branch gave it a rousing, “YAY Obama!! #EqualityForAll.” Obama, congratulations on being the first sitting President to support marriage equality. Feels like the future, and not the past. #NoFear — Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) May 10, 2012 Frequent “Chelsea Lately” panelist and out comedian Ross Matthews could hardly contain his excitement, writing, “OMG, it’s official! Obama becomes 1st president to support gay marriage!!! Historic day!” Meanwhile, another out TV personality, Bravo boss and talk show host Andy Cohen , shouted, “THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT.” Singer Ricky Martin offered his props as well, saying, “I applaud President @barackobama for affirming that ALL Americans should enjoy equal rights. Historic!” CNN talker Piers Morgan called it, “One small step for him … one giant leap for mankind,” while comedian/actress Sandra Bernhard offered up the poetic bon mot, “Viva Obama who has just endorsed gay marriage. Right on time drop a dime blow your mind.” “It Gets Better” found and “Savage Love” columnist Dan Savage urged action on the back of Obama’s announcement, saying, “Gay people better get out there and support the president. If he loses in November, we’ll be blamed.” “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin kept is brief with, “Obama gets it right on gay marriage. Bravo,” out blogger Perez Hilton dubbed the announcement, “better late than never” and singer Josh Groban said it was just “historic.” Twitter master comedian Patton Oswalt took the opportunity to have fun with the Obama news in a series of tweets about his upcoming (fake) gay marriage. “Oh my God — Seal Team Six just broke down my front door and are forcing me to marry @stephenfry! DAMN YOU, OBAMA!!!!!!” That was followed by some more good news in the form of, “Well, I’m now married to @stephenfry. Ceremony was charming, but watching Seal Team Six fight over the bouquet was f—ing INTENSE.” Funnyman Michael Ian Black was in a joking mood as well, taunting, “Hey Obama, if you love gay marriage so much, why don’t you marry it?” And in keeping with her maverick streak (not to be confused with her dad’s), political blogger Meghan McCain opined, “Even though he did it a little late under political pressure — very happy to hear the President came out in support of gay marriage.” What do you think of President Obama’s support of gay marriage? Another night of standing O’s for Ledet, more catcalls for Hollie Cavanagh and high praise for Phillip Phillips. By Gil Kaufman Joshua Ledet performs on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Wednesday night’s episode of “American Idol” offered definitive proof of what happens when you give the kids the keys to the Lambo: they crash and burn. On an evening when the themes were as vague as any we can recall (California Dreamin? Songs You Wish You’d Written?), the top four either went obscure or doubled-down on the most obvious choices possible, which made for an uneven night. A few things became crystal clear, though: based on the girl squeals, Phillip Phillips could win this thing in a walk-off without singing another note as long as he loses his razor, smiles and keeps clothes shopping at J.C. Penny. Similarly, Joshua Ledet pretty much has it in the bag, while Hollie Cavanagh has run out of luck and Jessica Sanchez should perfect her third-place finisher pageant smile and wave. It’s also pretty clear at this point that the dream is over for some and just about to come true for others. But who will be packing up their clear heels and headed home and who should prep their awkward bro hug posture? Read on to find out! Joshua Ledet : Of the thousands, maybe tens of thousands of “California Dreamin'” songs Josh could have picked, he picked a song that is the musical equivalent of a cardboard and mayonnaise sandwich: Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up.” It felt overwrought, over serious, overcooked and just no fun. The kid can sing, but by the end I was just over it. He more than made up for it with James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” Yeah, it’s another dusty, nearly 50-year-old oldie, but it’s dead-center in his lane and his voice was made for this kind of gritty, throwback soul. We asked last week if that’s what people really want to hear in 2012 , but at the very least Ledet put on a showcase for his powerhouse soul simmer and shout. He sang it and he sold it. Sorry girls, it’s gonna be Josh and Phil facing off in two weeks. A- Phillip Phillips : It’s always dicey when Phil puts down the guitar. Just like he doesn’t know how to dress like anything other than the guy fixing your HVAC system, the pawn shop kid can’t figure out what to do with his hands. His surf bum take on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” was … fine. It felt kind of like something you’d see in a San Diego beach bar on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The judges, as usual, were charmed, which makes me think he has incriminating photos or something. Hey, Randy, smiling isn’t singing. I’ve been writing about music longer than Jessica Sanchez has been alive and I can honestly say I’ve never heard of “Volcano” by Damien Rice. That’s the song you wish you’d written, Phil? Frankly, it sounded like everything Phillips sings to me, which is to say that it came off like a pretty decent Dave Matthews cover. The grit and passion were there, but the song never achieved lift-off. Can you really imagine being mesmerized by scruff and a smile for 90 minutes? B- Jessica Sanchez : Talk about overcorrecting. Sanchez was like a long-haul trucker snapping up out of deep sleep after hitting a guardrail and almost jackknifing the rig. She went from too sexy and grown up last week to just … too old. Her cover of Etta James’ “Steal Away” was, as the late, lamented Simon Cowell would say, “cabaret.” The Cirque du Soleil-worthy two-tone pants suit was weird and the song just made her seem like she was singing to her extended family in the living room while trying to make granny proud. The old soul and bluesy heart were there, but it felt more like an off-Broadway musical revue than a concert. And, c’mon, Jessica. The “‘Idol’ slayer?” We should have added Jennifer Holliday’s “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” to our list of songs that must be retired from the “Idol” repertoire. Jennifer Hudson crushed it in “Dreamgirls,” Tamyra Gray and LaKisha Jones also made it their you-know what on the show. Despite all that, BeBe Chez gave it her all and did a good, but not great, job of it. She hit the notes, served up the emotion and got all angry with it, but it just felt a bit, well, obvious. B- Hollie Cavanagh : The kid knows how to suck up to the judges, that’s for sure. Picking Journey’s “Faithfully” was a guarantee that Randy would be on board. Too bad HCav face-planted on the melody, losing the spark she showed last week and looking as bored and lost as we felt. The big notes at the end almost saved her. Almost. Jennifer called the performance “laid back,” but to me it just felt like she was laid out. The bottom line is you can make someone look like a star, but you can’t make them act like one. You know what can make Hollie seem like a cool, contemporary star? A 22-year-old song by Bonnie Raitt! Between the baggy black Chicos pantsuit and the violins, “I Can’t Make You Love Me” was another off-the-Vegas-Strip snoozer that most surely punched her ticket home. And the crocodile tears near the end were whatever the opposite of a nice touch is. Pip pip, little one! Team Cee Lo standout proved to be the most versatile contestant in the competition, which should make for a killer album. By John Mitchell Juliet Simms on “The Voice” Photo: NBC America named Jermaine Paul “The Voice” on last night’s finale of the reality singing competition. The former Alicia Keys backup singer bested runner-up Juliet Simms by a mere 4 percentage points to take the title, earning a recording contract with Universal Republic Records. While we’re excited for Paul, a longtime music-industry veteran and father of four who brought nothing but dedication and professionalism to each of his performances, and had a feeling he would ultimately prevail in the competition, it’s Simms’ future as a recording artist that we’re more interested in. By the end of the competition, her unique, raspy voice and ethereal Florence Welch-like style had us waiting out many of the other performances just to get another listen to Simms. Like Paul, Simms has been in the game for years, but things never quite panned out. Her band Automatic Love released a record on RCA in 2010, and she signed deals with Epic and Umbrella Records as a solo act, though none yielded sales strong enough to merit the labels’ continued investment, and Simms was ultimately dropped. Her search for a bigger platform to re-launch herself brought her to “The Voice,” where she quickly became a judges’ favorite. She was initially chosen by Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green, and chose to be part of Team Cee Lo. Throughout the competition, she earned nothing but praise for her killer vocals, but her performance of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” in the semifinals marked a turning point for the singer. She nailed it so hard that Levine declared her “the one to beat,” while Aguilera — who herself tore the song apart at the 2007 Grammy tribute to Brown — said, “I sing from my heart, love me, hate me, but I sing for me, and that’s where you sing from.” Her own coach Cee Lo seemed at a loss for words, saying only, “You killed it! You murdered that record!” Indeed, she delivered so fantastically that she reshaped the entire competition. Her take on “Man’s World” was so well-received that it captured the vast majority of the public vote, knocking Jamar Rogers , who had been, up to that point, one of Cee Lo’s favorites and a presumed lock to go all the way to the end, out of the competition and carrying her to the finals. It was proof that when she is in her element with the right song, she is a force to be reckoned with and a voice that people want to hear more from. None of this is to take away from Paul or his talent. The ease with which he performs is impressive, but it’s not particularly exciting. His will be an album heavy on R. Kelly-like ballads (like his fantastic take on “I Believe I Can Fly,” which won him the competition) and R&B slow jams, and that’s perfectly fine. But consider the delicate touch Simms brought to her group performance of “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Arranged in the style of Joe Cocker’s cover of the Beatles classic, it was simple and elegant and markedly different from her showstopping “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” It exemplified her astounding range as a performer; she’s as effective singing a spare ballad as she is tearing into a soul classic. We haven’t had a flesh-and-blood female rock star in the vein of Fiona Apple or Alanis Morissette emerge since the ’90s. We are sadly low on strong, truly unique and versatile female voices that can cross genres without sounding out of place. Simms can rock, she’s got soul and, with Cee Lo’s pushing, she even showcased a funky side. Simms could go in just about any direction with her next record, and that’s something to be excited about. Hopefully, despite coming in second place, “The Voice” will prove to be exactly the launching pad she needs to go on to bigger and better things. Who was your favorite of the “Voice” final four?
