‘There’s one [scene] in particular that stands out to me that’s just horrific,’ actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead says in our Fall Movie Preview. By Eric Ditzian Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton in “The Thing” Photo: Kerry Hayes/Universal It’s a horror-movie question almost 30 years in the making: What the hell happened to the Norwegian researchers discovered toward the beginning of the 1982 John Carpenter cult fave “The Thing” ? Kurt Russell and his crew do end up stumbling into some terrifying answers, but Carpenter’s flick concentrates on the alien horrors the Americans endure. The 2011 fall movie season, however, is set to uncover what really happened before Russell touched down in the Antarctic, as director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. delivers a prequel story, also called “The Thing,” to theaters on October 14. As part of MTV News’ Fall Movie Preview, we’re not only debuting an exclusive clip and photo from the horror flick about an alien able to mimic the likenesses of other life forms, but we sat down for a chat with star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays a young researcher confronting the extraterrestrial danger. She spoke about the pressures of remaking a classic, the criticism from some corners about introducing a central female character to the action, and the challenges of reinventing an alien creature while staying true to its original form. MTV : What’s the bigger threat for you on set in Canada? Is it losing your voice from screaming all the time or losing your fingers from frostbite? Mary Elizabeth Winstead : I think it was fainting from nearly hyperventilating. That was the biggest thing. Also, by the end of it, we were shooting in the summer and we were acting like it was freezing cold and we were all in parkas and layers and layers of gloves and hats, and it was humid and hot outside. There was a lot of heat exhaustion setting in. It was kind of crazy — we had to act cold. I didn’t have to do a lot of screaming in this, which was good. It was just a lot of that kind of heavy breathing, where you’re trying to keep your composure and trying not to fall apart. It’s that really small, fast breathing and take, after take, after take of that kind of thing, you start to get lightheaded and start to get a little woozy. MTV : There are a lot of remakes and new takes on cult classics, and I think a lot of people feel, “I’m OK with it, if they get it right.” For you guys on set, was that sort of pressure on your minds? And do you think you did get it right? Winstead : There was definitely a lot of pressure, because everyone involved is a fan of the John Carpenter version. None of us wanted to mess it up and none of us wanted to sully the legend of the John Carpenter film. We wanted to add to it in a positive way, a fun way, and make something that could go hand in hand with that film. And that’s what we did. I think we made a film that’s a really great standalone film, but also something that’s really cool if you’re a fan of the John Carpenter version, just to get a little insight into what may have occurred before. I think it’s just a good movie regardless of how you feel about remakes and prequels and all of that. At least you can go see a good film and hopefully put that aside and just be there and go along for the ride. MTV : Since this is a prequel, we presumably know what’s going to happen at the end. How did you keep the suspense going? Winstead : I think that it’s exciting to wonder who is a Thing and who isn’t, and that’s really where the suspense lies. A lot of films in the genre, you kind of know it’s not gonna end up well. I don’t think anyone is really expecting a happy ending. But that kind of going along for the ride and being in the suspense of the moment is what’s really exciting. Our story is so great and it’s one that could be played out in so many scenarios, and I think with bringing in completely different characters from completely different backgrounds and countries brings a whole other level of paranoia. It takes it into a different direction, having this language barrier between the characters and having a lot of “us” vs. “them” between the Norwegians and the Americans and things like that was an interesting take on it, made it a not straight-up remake. And it was exciting to me to put a girl in the mix, which people have different opinions on it. But for me, that’s what differentiates it from the John Carpenter version in a big way and makes it a different film, makes it a unique film and one that stands on its own. MTV : What do you mean by different opinions? Do you think people are skeptical of a woman battling aliens? Winstead : I read a lot of comments, which kind of surprised me, to be honest, of people who were really upset that we would dare put a female in “The Thing” when the John Carpenter version was all men. I do think it was an interesting dynamic to see men, grown men, all living together and dealing with this paranoia and isolation. But I also think it’s interesting having a young woman thrown into the mix trying to take control of the situation where nobody trusts her opinion. It’s a very different and interesting dynamic and it’s not gonna be the same as the original version, but that’s what’s great about it to me. MTV : Anyone who’s seen Ellen Ripley [Sigourney Weaver in “Alien”] do her thing knows that a woman can take on an alien. Winstead : What’s cool about it, for this character, a lot of her strength lies in her intellect rather than her muscles. It’s not like one of those characters where I come in and act like I can kick everybody’s ass. It’s not realistic. All these guys are bigger than me, stronger than me. But my character has a really strong intellect, which gets her far in this film. MTV : So you didn’t have to hit the gym? Winstead : No, none of that, which was nice. MTV : How does this one build? How long before, you know, sh– gets bad? Winstead : It’s a definite slow burn, which is great. It makes it feel like a classic horror film. You really set up the characters and you really build the fear slowly, and once sh– hits the fan, it gets crazy and it doesn’t stop. It’s super-intense, the last half of the film. You just hold your breath and you don’t breathe again till the credits roll. That’s really great. The first part of the movie is really slow and foreboding, and you feel this slow dread building because you do know what’s coming. You know that something crazy and horrible is gonna happen to these people, but they don’t know it yet and kind of having that feeling as the audience is one that’s exciting and creepy and terrifying. MTV : Carpenter’s movie really was horrifying and just gross. Really gross. Are you guys taking the same angle? Winstead : The “assimilation scenes” are definitely terrifying and disgusting and just creepy as hell. There’s one in particular that stands out to me that’s just horrific. I can’t really describe it in too much detail because I don’t wanna give anything away. It just blows your mind. Just seeing it being filmed, because we have a lot of practical effects stuff there, which is great and kind of seeing the beginning of it on set was terrifying in itself and disgusting. They just took it to a whole new level, the stuff they added in postproduction. MTV : We get a glimpse of the creature in the trailer. Because it’s a prequel, do you guys have to stay very true to the first one or do you have room to play? Winstead : I think they definitely kept the John Carpenter version in mind when it came to the creature design. Definitely it is still that same world, but there is a somewhat new look to it and somewhat different take on it. It’s sort of the 2011 version, but still with that spirit of practical effects. It certainly doesn’t look exactly like the John Carpenter version. As awesome as those effects are, they are out of a certain period. And when you see that, you can kind of tell like, “Oh, those are really awesome ’80s effects.” So you can’t really go exactly for that. You have to bring a little of the modern element in to it too, but hopefully keeping that real tangible quality the ’80s effects had as well. While her sister Beyonce was revealing her pregnancy , Solange Knowles made headlines for less positive reasons in Miami, Fla., on Sunday night. According to reports, Solange and her crew were rejected from a club because they had a balloon, which they decided to cross the street to pop. Yes, this happened … and resulted in a run-in with the cops. There they encountered two off duty police officers, and a conversation ensued, which was “casual and light-hearted” at first. Then it went bad. Apparently, the authorities were not enthralled about Solange being there, or about the balloon, which they brandished a weapon to destroy. Police say Solange was “armed” with a “five-foot inflatable banana.” We’re serious. According to Solange’s rep, these events followed : One officer pulled out a switchblade and threatened to pop the balloon. They felt it was inappropriate, but the turning point happened when he then took out the switchblade a second time with the blade open and said to them, ‘I don’t find the humor in this, anymore.’ The blade was less than a couple feet away from Solange and her friends. The officer proceeded to “forcefully” ask them to move, gesturing that they cross the street though there was oncoming traffic. Solange then asked the officer what was it that they did wrong, and he forcefully responded again to move. When a taxi pulled up, they got in and headed home. Solange made a series of calls to report the incident and was told to be prepared to be arrested when she came in to report the incident if her story was false. Solange simply wanted to report that the officer pulled out a weapon, when she had done nothing illegal, disruptive or belligerent. Solange is filing a report and has not yet decided on further legal action . The Miami Beach police said in rebuttal that Solange became unruly, loudly complaining of being rejected from the club for racial reasons. Solange inisists she never once raised her voice, although even if she did, cops whipping out a switchblade may not have been necessary. Beyonce’s sis has also gone on to state her sincerest disappointment with the Miami Beach Police and how they have handled this matter. No word if the matter will be pursued any further. Kristin Cavallari, Rob Kardashian, David Arquette top the latest cast. By Kara Warner and Katie Byrne Kristin Cavallari Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Incredibly enough, the 13th season of everyone’s favorite celebrity dance competition, “Dancing With the Stars” is just around the corner. The season premiere is a few weeks away, and the only thing more exciting than watching the new crop of celebs strut their stuff for the first time is finding out exactly what brave stars have been assembled to compete. The wait is over as ABC announced their bright, shiny new cast Monday night (August 29) during “Bachelor Pad.” Here’s a look at the eclectic new contestants readying their dancing shoes for season 13 of “Dancing With the Stars”: Nancy Grace The former prosecutor has made a name for herself as the host of her own talk show on HLN. Grace covers the world of current affairs, in a no-nonsense, take-no-prisoners approach that often draws criticism for her snap judgment and pointed opinions. Ricki Lake Longtime fans will always remember Lake from her big-screen debut as Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 movie “Hairspray.” Later in life, Lake made a name for herself with her daytime talk show, which ended its 11-year run in 2004 but is reportedly returning to TV in fall 2012. Chynna Phillips Phillips has long been in the public eye and is perhaps best known as being part of popular ’90s trio Wilson Phillips. The daughter of the Mamas & the Papas’ bandmembers John and Michelle Phillips has dabbled in singing and acting over the years and has been married to Billy Baldwin (brother to Alec and Stephen) since 1995. Hope Solo Solo joins the ranks of many professional athletes-turned-dancers on “DWTS.” The professional soccer star helped the U.S. Women’s team bring home the gold medal at the ’08 summer Olympics and is currently a goalkeeper for the MagicJack soccer club. Kristin Cavallari The MTV star stirred up trouble first on “Laguna Beach” and then took over for Lauren Conrad on the final season of “The Hills.” The newly single Cavallari will surely take full advantage of the show’s skimpy costumes and no doubt gain the attention of a new beau. Elisabetta Canalis Canalis is best known for her highly publicized two-year romance with one of America’s favorite “Sexiest Men Alive,” George Clooney. Since their split last summer, the Italian beauty has appeared in film and TV shows and hosted the Italian version of “Total Request Live,” as well as the singing contest Sanremo Music Festival. Rob Kardashian “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” might shine the brightest spotlight on the Kardashian sisters, but little brother Rob is often there as the voice of reason amid the family drama. The reality star could have a leg up on the competition, getting tips from sister Kim, who competed on season seven, or maybe Sabrina Bryan, the Cheetah Girls bandmate of Rob’s ex Adrienne Bailon, who competed on season five. Or maybe he should just keep it in the family. Chaz Bono Bono is the only child of superstars Cher and the late Sonny Bono. Despite living in the shadow of famous parents, Chaz, who was born Chastity, is a writer, actor and musician, and is well-known in the LGBT community for being a transgender advocate. David Arquette While Arquette is known for memorable roles in film and television, particularly as dopey policeman Dewey Cox in the “Scream” franchise, the actor/director/writer/occasional professional wrestler made headlines last year when he and Courteney Cox, his wife of nearly 11 years, announced their separation. Three months later, after giving Howard Stern a particularly revealing interview about the state of his marriage, Arquette checked himself into rehab for issues with alcohol. He is in recovery and has reportedly been sober since. Ron Artest Or should we say Metta World Peace? The outspoken Lakers player and rapper, who is currently trying to change his name to that Ochocinco-esque alias, made headlines years ago for an on-court brawl but is now known as a quirkily lovable personality. We’ll see what antics he has up his sleeve on the dance floor. J.R. Martinez This surefire fan favorite is an actor, motivational speaker and retired soldier who suffered burns over 40 percent of his body when his Humvee hit a landmine in Iraq. Martinez turned the harrowing experience into an inspirational tale for other burn victims and now has a role on ABC’s “All My Children.” Carson Kressly This fashion guru got his celebrity start as one of the “Fab Five” on Bravo’s “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy.” Kressley has an eye for how to make people look good and frequently appears on TV talk shows to offer his expert opinions on fashion. Kressley currently hosts his own show “Carson Nation” on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN. “Dancing With The Stars” premieres Monday, September 19, at 8 p.m. on ABC. What do you think of the new cast? ‘Tonight Tonight’ band tells MTV News it plans to stalk Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga at the big show. By Gil Kaufman Hot Chelle Rae Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — You always remember your first time. That’s why Nashville buzz band Hot Chelle Rae have spent this weekend soaking up every ounce of energy they can from the vortex of awesome surrounding Sunday’s 2011 VMAs . “It feels amazing. We are so stoked to be out here and not watching from the couch this year,” said “Tonight Tonight” singer Ryan Follese. “It’s gonna be really, really exciting.” Asked whom he would like to celeb-stalk at the show, Follese didn’t hesitate, picking Nicki Minaj as his obsessive target of choice, based on his hope that she “might have on something insane.” Guitarist Nash Overstreet said he had his sights set on Lady Gaga , but was afraid she might be too dangerous to stalk because it’s possible she’d be wearing something “that could kill you.” When they’re not plotting who to spy on at the show, Hot Chelle Rae have been busy putting the finishing touches on their new album, which bassist Ian Keaggy said is slated to come out in November. “If you like ‘Tonight Tonight,’ honestly, then you’re going to love the record,” Follese said. “There are moments of songs about tense feelings, but for the most part it’s an upbeat, really, really fun record.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Last night on Bachelor Pad, Melissa went insane, Jake’s feud with Kasey escalated, Bret Michaels showed up, and there was synchronized swimming involved. Just another eventful night on ABC’s guilty pleasure spinoff hit. By the end, it was Jake Pavelka and Kasey Kahl on the block again, with a weird ending that would have people talking if the format actually mattered. Read about it below in THG’s official +/- Bachelor Pad recap: Blake, on Melissa: “She’s like a live wire that’s flailing around on the ground ready to zap somebody, and I’m covered in water.” Plus 4 for that metaphor. Speaking of water, the challenge is synchronized swimming! If you thought the girls would have a big edge here, boy did you think wrong. Minus 5 . Obligatory Minus 2 for Erica’s attempt at “swimming.” Despite not playing to his self-proclaimed strengths – mental durability, physical strength and problem solving – Jake is the star ballerina! Plus 9 . Michael wins the rose, however, resulting in another boring, sappy date with Holly. Minus only 1 , though, because at least this wasn’t scripted. Vienna Girardi, who was asked to come along on Mike’s date for reasons unknown to all, spends the whole time whining. God, she is painful. Minus 9 . Once you get past the random, awkward ridiculousness of his cameo and “performance” for Holly and Mike, Bret Michaels is kind of the man. Plus 11 . Song choice: “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Obvi. Plus 4 . Michelle Money, the girls’ winner, is pretty darn likable on Bachelor Pad . Plus 13 for turning around her image. She’s not perfect, but seems genuine. Minus 7 , though, for her pronunciation of Graham. Graaaaaaaaaahm . Not annoying at all. Plus 3 for those two, while we’re at it. So cute together! “I think you’re great,” Michelle says. “You barely know me,” Graham responds. Still, they make out hard. Michelle definitely gets after it. Plus 5 . Minus 4 for the rose appearing and disappearing from Graaaaaaaaaaahm ‘s shirt. Even we noticed that one, editors. Step up your game. Back at the Pad, Jake Pavelka conspires to plot Kasey’s demise. Plus 6 . Sadly, his plot does not involve playing “The Rainbow Connection” on repeat until Kasey loses his mind, attacks him and is removed from the house. Minus 3 . “I was willing to do whatever I need to do.” – Jake, who then backed up his words, alright. He kissed Erica, and it was nothing short of foul. Minus 10 . She was a fan, however. “I have good lips that I maintain by getting injections every six months,” she says. Gross, but Plus 6 for unintentional comedy. Hey, look at that, we forgot William was still on the show! Plus 5 . The more riled up Kasey gets, the harder he is to understand, as his voice resembles a frog’s. Plus 19 , because no one cares what he’s saying anyway. Vienna Girardi ‘s fake boobs are ALL over the place this week. Like, more than usual. Given her personality, how did she ever win The Bachelor?! Minus 3 . Kasey gets down on one knee and gives Vienna a ring … a promise ring. SO lame, and yet fitting, as these two are developmentally in first grade. Wash . Even Vienna can’t take Kasey’s singing half seriously. Take a hint. Unless ABC is paying him cash under the table to pull this, what a douche. Minus 11 . Melissa is freaking out. Like, panic-attack style. Xanax time. Minus 2 . A twist: Only one guy will go home this week! Not that anyone watches Bachelor Pad for the competition aspect, but Minus 4 for rules changing weekly. With one final rose remaining, Chris just says “Kasey” … and then we fade to black. Huh? He then says on Twitter that “It will all make sense next week!” Is Bachelor Pad trying to make us think? What gives? So confusing. Minus 15 . One theory: Jake punches Kasey in the junk before he bolts for the limo, and ABC just wanted to save that for next week’s show. We can hope. Plus 2 . The Mask always cracks us up with his spots during the credits. Plus 3 . EPISODE TOTAL: +14. SEASON TOTAL: +28. GONE : Jake Pavelka (we think), Dignity.
Ambition track brings duo back together after calling a truce on Twitter. By Alvin Blanco Wale Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — Wale and Kid Cudi ‘s reconciliation will be certified with a new song. The Maybach Music Group rapper’s sophomore album, Ambition, is dropping November 1 and will include a song called “Focused,” which features Cudi. While previewing his album for select media outlets, Wale dropped hints about the collaborator — a friend of his that lived in Brooklyn while he was living in SoHo — on the song he was about to play last. “We’re 23 years old at this time, we’re trying to figure it all out,” Wale told MTV News. “We went from not having sh– to having money at our disposal, so it kind of f—ed up our friendship. He doesn’t smoke as much anymore, but his name is Scott.” That “Scott” is Scott Mescudi, a.k.a. Kid Cudi. The two rappers started gaining notoriety in the hip-hop world almost simultaneously a few years ago, with Wale even appearing on “Is There Any Love,” a bonus track from Cudi’s Man on the Moon: The End of Day debut. However, the pair had an infamous falling-out , which, according to Wale, was rooted in a lack of communication. “The last time me and him spoke was Governor’s Island maybe three years ago,” Wale said. “It was a weird exchange. … When you don’t talk to somebody for a long time and you see them on TV and you’re trying to figure them out through music … we bumped into each other, and we spoke, and it was just weird. It was already animosity for me, because I was like, ‘Yo, this is my guy and it’s just weird now.’ Just weird. “I can’t say that word enough,” Wale continue. “So [later on], it was Drake’s birthday party in D.C.; he was there. I’m getting off the elevator and I see him. So he was like, ‘What’s up?’ I was like, ‘What’s up?’ And that was it. Next thing I see is the Complex interview. That was maybe like a year after that.” After that Complex interview, many thought the two would never be friends again. Nevertheless, earlier this year, they reconciled via Twitter. Wale recalled not believing it was Cudi who called him to make up before their Twitter truce. “The main reason why I didn’t believe it was him was because his voice was really light, and I remember it always being raspy,” Wale said. “He was like, ‘I don’t smoke weed anymore, bro. My voice is changing. I’m about to hit you on Twitter right now. This is really me. I saw it was him. I was like, ‘Sup, man, how you been?’ He said, ‘I been good, man. I just wanted to get right to it: I know I’ve been acting kind of f—ed up and weird,’ and this that and a third and all that other personal sh–. He threw that out there, and we just made amends. The next morning, he called me like, ‘I just wanted to let you know I wasn’t high or anything when I called you. I really meant it.’ ” Wale then further extended the olive branch by saying he had a track he felt Cudi would be perfect for. “I never really thought we capitalized off what we had,” Wale said. “I sent him the beat, and we made this record I’ve been trying so hard to keep for myself for a long time.” “Focused” features Wale rapping, with Cudi supplying a chorus in his sing-song, Mr. Solo Dolo type of delivery over a synth-loaded uptempo track. “It’s a testament to where I am lyrically, spiritually, all of that, because this song almost never happened, as y’all know,” Wale said of “Focused.” “It feels like the record that ‘Is There Any Love’ was supposed to be. When they kept talking about me and Cudi in every magazine, this is the record I felt like they needed to hear — the one that everybody was going to get behind, and it was going to go top 40 and not be corny. This is like the best top 40 non-cheesy record that you’re ever going to hear in your life. That’s how I feel about it.” Wale recently dropped a new mixtape called The Eleven One Eleven Theory, which temporarily crashed Hulkshare’s site upon its release. The project features a song called “Chain Music,” that will also be on Ambition. What are you expecting from Wale and Cudi’s collabo? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Wale Kid Cudi
Damn… KG couldn’t get no love and JD got to hit that? Janet Jackson is making her way to Minneapolis Friday as part of her “No. Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour” (her first tour since Michael’s death) and the singer spoke candidly with their local Star Tribune about a plethora of interesting topics, including how former Minnesota Timberwolves player Kevin Garnett tried to get a piece and her thoughts on Nicki Minaj’s recent “wardrobe malfunction.” Check out the excerpts below: Janet Jackson knows her way around the Twin Cities, since she recorded most of her hits here with producer/songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. However, she hasn’t been here lately; Jam and Lewis moved to Los Angeles several years ago and she hasn’t worked with them since her “20 Y.O.” album in 2006. Jackson, 45, agreed to answer some questions via email. Her answers were short and sweet, punctuated with emoticons. She didn’t give direct or in-depth responses about such controversies as her lip-syncing in concert and her infamous 2004 Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction but she did address them. Q: What will it be like to perform all your hits in Minneapolis, where so many were written and recorded? A: It is going to be fun for me! I can’t wait to get back to Minneapolis and see all my fans there. Q: What’s your favorite memory of Minneapolis? A: I have so many, but being in Minneapolis to record “Control” stands out. It was the first time I was recording a CD without my family. It was a great. Q: I heard some guys stalked you by your hotel when you were recording “Control” in 1985. What’s that story? A: “Nasty” is the story for that question. That song came out of that experience. Q: What did Kevin Garnett say to you later after you brought him onstage at Target Center for the seductive “Rope Burn” in 1998? A: Kevin Garnett wanted to hook up. :0) Q: What do you like most about this tour? The least? A: I am having so much fun on this tour. It is the largest ever world tour for me. Whenever possible, I am choosing more intimate venues. I love being able to see everyone’s face in the audience. Q: What is it like to perform “Scream” without your brother Michael? A: It is amazing. It’s very therapeutic. The energy of the song is fierce but it makes me smile inside when I hear him, when I hear his voice. Q: What goes through your mind onstage on this tour vs. what went through your mind onstage during your arena tours? A: All I can think about during the show is how much fun I am having and how grateful I am to all the fans who have supported me all these years. Q: Why do you end the show with “Together Again”? A: I love what the song says… I am letting the audience know that we will be together again… hopefully soon! Q: Over the years, some people have said that Janet lip-syncs in concert. What’s the situation on this tour? Is all your singing live? A: Yes, I am singing live. WOW… 1998??? They went all the way there with it. Glad Janet got a chance to clear up the lip synchin rumors though. Keep reading for more…
