‘They’re like $80 million in the hole,’ Fif jokes to MTV News about Def Jam. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith 50 Cent When 50 Cent signed G-Unit artists Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo over to EMI , the plan was to set up his longtime Queens, New York, cohorts as artists who could work independently, without his help. Fif told MTV News that Banks’ The Hunger for More 2, which was released last November, was the project that set the trend. “Banks’ project is the beginning of them flying solo, flying without my assistance so much,” 50 said on the Atlanta set of Tony Yayo’s upcoming “Haters” video. In the past, Fif lent his guidance as well as his voice to his artists’ albums. Back in 2004, the G-Unit General appeared alongside Banks on “On Fire,” the first single from the Punch Line King’s platinum debut. He did the same with Yayo’s first single, “So Seductive,” the following year. “Like on all their other albums and singles, I was featured on their projects to help bring attention to it and get ’em off into the right space,” he said. “This go-around is, like, for them to go away from me and do it on their own. They’re setting up shop on their own on this project.” It’s been reported that Banks’ and Yayo’s EMI deal is structured much like an indie. Even though EMI is a major distributor, G-Unit has taken the reins when it comes to positioning both rappers in the marketplace. Even though 50 has championed G-Unit’s independence, speculation has swirled about whether Banks would sign to Def Jam where former G-Unit president Sha Money XL now resides as the Senior VP of A&R . 50, without saying it directly, shot down the notion of a Def Jam deal, citing the label’s supposed-financial woes. Recently, the legendary rap label has gone through a bit of restructuring with former head honcho L.A. Reid leaving and Barry Weiss stepping in as chairman and CEO. Regardless, Fif doesn’t seem too optimistic for a future at the label. “Well, Def Jam, I’m not even sure what that system — that system is not in a good space right now. It was April 4, 2011 and I was in anatomy class with a boring teacher. Suddenly I noticed that my phone started to vibrate. I was very nervous because I could not answer the call and my friend would not stop calling. I thought my friend had news about Justin’s visit, but never in my wildest dreams would have dreamed of news that she gave me . I made up one of the best excuses for the teacher to let me out of class (I study drama so it helped me) I left class and called my friend back. She said, ”Vicky, you will meet Justin Bieber, I got a meet & greet” My friend is not a belieber, but she entered and if she had the luck, she would give it to me. I went to class with tears in his eyes. Certainly not the case, but felt as if everyone was watching me. I got to my seat and I told my teammates, ‘I’ll meet him’ I could not stop mourn or smile, but I still can not believe it. Me? With Justin Bieber? It was impossible. Came the awaited day, the day I was waiting just to see him on stage and hear his voice. I went to the meet and greet with my cousin and a friend. Our pink bracelets said ‘JUSTIN BIEBER’ on them. When it was time to enter, one man who spoke in English told us we couldn’t take cameras. We were waiting, we walked in groups of 4 and watched as the girls came out crying, that’s when I got really nervous. It was our turn. We turned right and saw him there. I walked towards him and I was speechless, I do not get the words out, I covered my mouth with my hands and tried to speak but could not say anything. He said, “ Hey guys, how are you?” None of us could answer. I embraced him and he hugged me too . We posed for the photo. I couldn’t leave there without saying anything and just before I could speak, he took my hand and myself with my other hand, wrapped his. I said, ” I admire you so much .. I love you” He smiled and said, “Oh thanks” and gave me a kiss on the cheek. We left the room and the tears began to appear as if they had been holding a lifetime. I hugged my cousin and then my friend. I cried and cried, I could not believe it. Have I said that I love him? He smiled at me? He embraced me? He gave me a kiss on the cheek? Okay for a moment I thought I was crazy, these things do not happen. These things happen to other girls, I get excited to think that a belieber has fulfilled a dream. He has taught me to say ‘never say never’, he helps me sometimes when I think I’m not good at all, or when I think my dreams are worthless. Justin Drew Bieber thanks for being that person who can make me smile and help me follow my dream. Someday you’ll be grateful, because if I ever became an actress, you’ll be one of those people that have made me realize my worth and realize that we can always be that 1 of 1,000,000. Experts weigh in on Toscano’s Interscope signing and music-industry future. By Jocelyn Vena Pia Toscano Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images After much tiptoeing around the rumors , on Tuesday, “American Idol” alum Pia Toscano confirmed what everyone already suspected: She is signed to Interscope Records. The singer danced around the matter when we sat down with her in April and then again when we caught up with her at the American Idols Live! Tour rehearsals late last month. “You know, you’re just going to have to wait and see. That’s the goal, ultimately,” Toscano teased when asked about her career. “So we both have some good things ahead,” she added, with Haley Reinhart at her side. Toscano is expected to premiere her first single, “This Time,” at the tour kickoff Wednesday (July 6) in Utah. The song officially drops July 12. Interscope signing Toscano came as no surprise to experts who follow the show, and the fact that she kept it a secret for so long is equally unsurprising. “I am going to guess that they waited so long to announce it in order to goose ticket sales for the tour, which starts tonight,” Village Voice music editor Maura Johnston told MTV News. Meanwhile, MTV News’ very own “Idol” expert, Jim Cantiello, agreed about the timing of the announcement. “If the powers that be announced her deal while ‘Idol’ was still in season, it would have undermined the eventual winner’s signing. ‘American Idol’ is a lot like ‘The Real Housewives of New York’: There’s a pecking order. You can’t crown Miss America before the congeniality award gets handed out.” So will Toscano succeed at a major label? “Honestly, when I think of people becoming fans of hers, I think of all the ’90s revivalism that’s gone on lately in the alt-rock and hip-hop worlds,” Johnston said. “Maybe the outcry over Pia is some sort of residual result of fetishism for that decade creeping over into other types of music, since she’s operating in a Celine/old-school Mariah sort of diva way.” “I don’t know if Pia will be the ‘next big thing,’ ” Cantiello countered. “Her vocal prowess is beyond spectacular, but on ‘Idol,’ she suffered from a lack of personality.
