‘Source Code’: Five Hidden Pop-Culture Influences

Director Duncan Jones was inspired by everything from ‘Grand Theft Auto’ to ‘Quantum Leap.’ By Eric Ditzian Jake Gyllenhaal in “Source Code” Photo: Summit Entertainment “Moon” wasn’t some slick Hollywood production. Director Duncan Jones didn’t have a studio’s deep pockets to dip into for “Avatar”-level visual effects. Instead, he built a miniature replica of a lunar base on which star Sam Rockwell got up to his strange activities. And it worked. The movie was a sci-fi stunner. So it’s no surprise Jones eyed a similar approach for his next feature, the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring “Source Code.” “We talked about using model miniatures for ‘Source Code,’ but the time frame was working against us,” Jones said, citing his star’s schedule. “So we used a lot of CGI.” Thus all those train explosions in the film — and there are a dizzying number — were created in a computer rather than in the real world. That’s rather fitting, after all, based on what the film is all about. “Moon,” though, is just one of the pop-culture influences on “Source Code” that Jones alerted us to in a recent chat. Read on for four more (and check back Monday for five secrets about the production that were simply too spoiler-filled to reveal before opening weekend). The Michel Gondry Connection Gyllenhaal plays a helicopter pilot named Captain Colter Stevens who’s part of an ultra-secret government program that sends him into the past — in another man’s body, eight minutes before a terrorist detonates a bomb onboard a commuter train, to be precise — again and again in an effort to discover the bomber’s identity and prevent the next attack. As a practical matter, that means the story revisits the same eight-minute sequence over and over and over. Jones’ challenge was to make this recurring event never seemed repetitious. For inspiration, he turned to Michel Gondry. “I remember hearing about how Gondry used to do music videos — he did Daft Punk and stuff like that,” Jones said. “He used to graph everything out and had these intricate diagrams of how to do things. So I took a shot at it that way and lifted out all of the repetitions that occur in the film, and then created a camera map about how I can revisit this event in a different way each time. That was the technical level. “Then on a narrative level,” he added. “I ensured new characters were introduced for each one. You never see the same thing twice.” The “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” Connection The “Source Code” link to Gondry doesn’t end with music videos. Jones also tapped Louis Morin, the visual-effects supervisor on “Eternal Sunshine,” to oversee the CG work on the new movie — in particular, those recurring train explosions. “He’s got that beautiful blend of being a real technical expert and also an artist,” Jones said. “We worked out how to make each of the explosions have its own personality and be visceral and scary. In the storyboards, we made sure the camera angles made the explosions feel up close and personal to the scale of the effect. Then in the animatic phase, where the objects are moving, you start to get a sense of textures and how much dirt is thrown in the air. You start to tweak it and get the visceral impact.” The “Grand Theft Auto” Connection For all the high-intensity train explosions, perhaps the film’s single-most astonishing shot is one of Gyllenhaal jumping off a moving train. Simple enough. But what makes it extraordinary is that the camera never cuts away and you see Gyllenhaal tumble and spin and wind up bloodied and bruised on the pavement. “It’s a tribute to ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ ” Jones explained. “When you’re driving around at high speed in that computer game and you open the door and jump out of the car, the camera doesn’t cut away; it stays with you as you roll. I wanted to do that shot because I’d never seen it in a movie before. “That was some cutting-edge post-production effects,” he continued. “We played a game of chicken with the technology to make sure it was capable of doing that by the time we were ready to do the effect. Fortunately, things meshed at just the right time.” The “Quantum Leap” Connection Of all the sci-fi productions to come before it, “Source Code” might put viewers most in the mind of “Quantum Leap.” Jones, too, immediately thought of that NBC series when he read the script. Ever the playful auteur, the director decided to recruit the show’s star to get what he called “a little tip of the hat in there.” “I don’t know if you noticed, but Scott Bakula does a little cameo,” he revealed. “He’s the voice of Colter’s father. He even says, ‘Oh boy,’ in the middle of their phone conversation, as a little clue!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Source Code.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jessie J Demonstrates The Dangers Of Nail Art On ‘When I Was 17’

British songstress talks about her early toy-store job on this week’s episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. By Sterling Wong Jessie J on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News British singer/songwriter Jessie J kept herself plenty busy in her teenage years. On this week’s “When I Was 17,” the newcomer shares that as an ambitious teen, she signed up for singing lessons, and to pay for that, she worked at a major toy store in London called Hamleys. Working around fun toys and cute kids must have been a breeze, no? Not quite, according to Jessie! “I did ‘nail jazz,’ and so I was basically drawing snowmen, Christmas trees and smiley faces,” she explained. “And I used to lose my voice all the time ’cause I’d be like, ‘Hello! Would you like a nail jazz demonstration?’ ” Jessie’s voice wasn’t the only thing affected by the job. Because she had to paint so many nails each day, she actually injured her hand in the process! “It was hard work. I actually gave myself an injury. I had a specific muscle that I basically ripped, because I did so many nails every day,” Jessie says. Who knew working in a toy store could be detrimental to your health? Still, Jessie looks at the bright side of things. “The positive of the job was that now I can draw a snowman or a Christmas tree on anyone’s nails!” With her star firmly on the rise and with her debut album dropping in the U.S. on April 12, Jessie’s probably not going to be doing more nails anytime soon! “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Jessie J, Tyrese and Lupe Fiasco — airs Saturday (April 2) at 11 a.m. on MTV. Wiz Khalifa Says Snoop Dogg Advises Him To ‘Boss Up’

Rapper opens up about ‘High School’ collaborator on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: Sohyung Kang / MTV News Snoop Dogg always walked his own path as a youngin’ in the game. And now that the veteran rapper has taken Wiz Khalifa under his wing, his advice to the upstart isn’t very different from his own mantra. According to the “Black and Yellow” star, Snoop told him to keep doing what he’s been doing. “He just always told me to stick to what I know, ’cause I know myself the best,” Wiz said during his appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live.” “And [he told me to] boss up in every opportunity that I get. Those are mainly the two key points that stick out. “Snoop is a big fan of what I do and, of course, he’s a legend to me and it’s just an honor for him to be talking about me, speaking so highly of me and sharing the same views. I witnessed his career, and there was a time when my dad wouldn’t want me listening to Snoop. But as time went on and he got to see who Snoop was as a businessman and other avenues of life, then he really grew to respect him. I feel like, as long as I do me, like Dogg says, in time people will get it.” The two green-friendly rappers joined forces late last year for Wiz’s “Black and Yellow” remix and later announced they would be shooting a movie together called “High School.” “We decided to go ahead and say, ‘You know what? Let’s do a movie and a soundtrack and just become, you know, bosom buddies and do what we do ’cause we love what we do and we love each other and at the same time, we know what the people want,’ ” Snoop explained. “The people want to see the two generations come together where hip-hop ain’t about old school and new school. It’s just about good music and making good moves and putting something out there that’s classic where people can respect it and say, ‘Yeah, so now, this was some gangsta sh– that really made hip-hop gradually grow to another level.’ ” Are you looking forward to seeing Wiz and Snoop join forces for “High School”? ‘American Idol’ Report Card: Haley Reinhart Comes Out Of Nowhere!

Elton John does wonders for Haley and Pia, but James and Stefano may have ruined their GPAs. By Eric Ditzian Haley Reinhart performs on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox What a schizophrenic ” American Idol ” school year it has been, and our report cards have been correspondingly all over the place. One week Casey Abrams is up, a few later, he’s collapsing into Ryan Seacrest’s tender embrace after narrowly avoiding a trip home. Jacob Lusk and Stefano Langone have each taken their place at the head of the class, only to tumble to the low end of the grading curve. What to make of all this GPA upheaval? Well, “Idol” is a damn hard class. Consistency from performance to performance is just as important as excellence on any given evening. And excellence we most certainly had on Wednesday, as the contestants took on Elton John’s oeuvre. So too, of course, did we have singers who either didn’t study hard enough or who just couldn’t quite grasp the night’s curriculum. Too bad. Our “Idol” report card suffers no fools. Let’s get to it! Excellent Pia Toscano : As we explained in our preview, there was no way Pia was going to go with anything uptempo, despite everyone’s pleas over the weeks. Hey, if Scotty McCreery doesn’t have to ditch his country twang, should she be compelled to give up residency in Balladsville? That’s a matter for debate, but during her take on “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” it was hard to complain about anything. What a voice. Seriously, what a voice! Haley Reinhart : Let’s put aside her rather amusing pre-performance reference to “hard-core bangage” and concentrate on what she accomplished during her time onstage. She killed it! As surprised as we were, she freaking killed it! She finally, fully embraced those wonderful bluesy tones and growled her way toward glory during “Bennie and the Jets.” Our only fear is that it’s too late for Haley to turn the tide and stick around for more than a few weeks. Good Scotty McCreery : We’re not going to say we get it, but perhaps we’re starting to enjoy it. To wit, we’ve ditched any notion Scotty has a desire to even shout in the direction of a country-free genre. Nor were we surprised to hear his song selection process involved nothing more than finding an Elton tune with “country” in the title. Thusly prepared, we were able to sit back and enjoy the country comfort he was selling. His fluency in the genre, at such a young age, is truly impressive. Whether or not he wins “Idol,” Scotty is going to sell millions of records. Paul McDonald : Paul learned his lesson well last week: Play the guitar, don’t dance. Hooray! Sure, his “Rocket Man” started off a little slurry, and the guy has a tendency to come off creepy when he’s trying to go smoldery, but we never tire of the tone of his voice. That being said, his voice simply didn’t have the oomph to hit those notes that bring out goose bumps. Lauren Alaina : We’ve been saying for a while Lauren is at her best when she’s not racing through fast-paced tunes, attempting to keep up while jigging and jagging across the stage. In this sense, “Candle in the Wind” was a smart choice, and the arrangement gave the tune some country flavoring that washed away any residual, Princess Di-induced cheesiness. The slowed-down performance gave Lauren a chance to build, getting better as she went and finally finishing on a strong note. Casey Abrams : Goodbye, bushy beard. Hello, reborn Casey. If there were one singer to nail the emotional aspects of Elton’s music, it was Casey. Restrained, tender, satisfying. Coming off the judges’ save, he followed Tom Hanks’ advice in “Saving Private Ryan”: “Earn this!” Earn it he did. Now keep it up, kid! Satisfactory Naima Adedapo : Her faux-Jamaican accent was the least of her problems. Jimmy Iovine gave the game away when he wondered if Naima could stay in tune: No, no she couldn’t. The accent was a bold choice — bolder even than slapping some reggae swag on “I’m Still Standing.” But while we felt the song sounded fine with its new arrangement, her accent smacked of gimmickry, a ploy to distract us. We don’t think it’ll work. Thia Megia : The 16-year-old avoids a lower grade, if only because the judges have been deeply unfair to her for a few weeks in a row. Other bottom-of-the-barrel singers come in for wild praise no matter how dreadfully they perform. The judges, meanwhile, have absolutely no use for Thia; their condescension is painful to hear and unfair to air. OK, so her take on “Daniel” was pitchy as hell, with phrasing messier than a daycare playroom after snack time, and she couldn’t swoop down to hit those low notes if her life depended on it. OK, so she’s probably going home on Thursday. But if the judges truly don’t like what she does, what the heck is she doing here in the first place? Jacob Lusk : There’s a difference between singing with emotion and singing whilst on the verge of tears — a difference Jacob doesn’t seem to grasp. He’s uncomfortable to watch, and not nearly pleasant enough to hear. We wanted to step slowly away from the television during his rendition of “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.” All that progress from last week, tossed out the window. Unsatisfactory Stefano Langone : The first thing Stefano had to contend with was a brutal intro package in which Jimmy all but announced the kid was going to bomb. The second thing he had to contend with was “Tiny Dancer”; the diminutive singer just didn’t have the vocal power the tune demanded, or at least deserved. His phrasings were muddled, but at least his eyes were (mostly) open. Not that it matters much. Stefano’s in trouble. James Durbin : Not even a five-alarm fire can distract us from the fact that James’ performance was fun and energetic, but useless as an example of his musical talents. He gets a freaking flaming piano? Someone’s playing favorites with the contestants. Also, that reference to a Pepsi moment? Yikes! Thought shalt not speak ill of the deceased, especially not the King of Pop. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Nate Dogg Mourned By Family, Friends And Fans At Public Wake

‘I’m just glad to know that my brother was able to do what he loved,’ sister Pamela Hale-Burns tells MTV News. By Tamara Palmer, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Nate Dogg Photo: Mark Sullivan/ WireImage LONG BEACH, California — One of the West Coast’s most iconic hip-hop voices filled the air on Friday (March 25) as family, friends and fans waved goodbye to Nate Dogg . Hundreds of people gathered outside the New Hope Baptist Church to pay tribute to the late singer, who died last week at age 41. The service, which was open to the public, included close friend and actor Ricky Harris and collaborators Daz Dillinger and producer Battlecat. Some mourners came from as far away as London, New York and San Francisco to pay their respects to the golden-voiced singer. Nate Dogg was an accomplished artist who not only helped define the sound of West Coast rap via his memorable collaborations with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and others, but also helped earn top 10 tracks for Eminem and 50 Cent in the past decade. He died on March 15 due to complications sustained in the years following two separate strokes. At the time of his death, he had been resting at the home of his mother Ruth Holmes, not far from the church. New Hope was more than a temple of worship for Nate Dogg; it is also where he got his start in music, honing what would later be an inimitable voice by singing gospel in the choir there with sister Pamela Hale-Burns, now a reporter for the Long Beach Press-Telegram. “Singing is something that we grew up doing, and I’m just glad to know that my brother was able to do what he loved,” Hale-Burns told MTV News. “I said earlier that he chose a career where he never worked a day in his life, because he loved doing what he did.” The church is also just a few blocks away from VIP Records, the legendary independent shop where Nate started his career along with Snoop. It’s immortalized in Snoop’s video for his debut single “Who Am I (What’s My Name?).” “What this means for me today is just to keep on striving, to keep on pushing the line that we set 20 years ago until now,” said Daz, who ended his tour to attend the service. “I’m just here to celebrate Nate Dogg’s life.” Nate’s older sibling Samuel Hale, a.k.a. Sam Dogg, asked that Nate’s fans never forget the man who left a legacy of countless hit records behind. “Remember his voice, his talent, and keep the family in prayer,” Sam said. “My brother is a legend, and we’re going to miss him a whole lot.” Nate Dogg’s funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal (formerly the Spruce Goose Dome), adjacent to the Queen Mary hotel. While access to the funeral will be limited, a service for the public will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Dome, the Press-Telegram reports. Share your memories of Nate Dogg in the comments below. Chris Brown Parts Ways With Rep After ‘Good Morning America’ Incident

Tammy Brook reportedly left singer’s camp on Friday. By James Montgomery Chris Brown appears on “Good Morning America” on Monday Photo: ABC News The fallout from Chris Brown’s post-“Good Morning America” outburst continued on Friday (March 25), when The New York Post ‘s Page Six reported that the singer has parted ways with his publicist, Tammy Brook. Brook, who also reps athletes like Mike Tyson and Chris Bosh, could not be reached for comment by the newspaper, but according to other reports , she “quit” the job. A source tells MTV News that the decision was mutual, but regardless, the news caps off a tumultuous week for Brown, who allegedly smashed a window at ABC’s Times Square studios following his interview with Robin Roberts, in which she repeatedly brought up his 2009 assault on then girlfriend Rihanna and the subsequent legal drama that followed. Brown then reacted to the interview in a (since deleted) tweet that read, “I’m so over people bringing this past sh– up!!! Yet we praise Charlie Sheen and other celebs for [their] bullsh–.” That interview occurred on Tuesday, the same day Brown dropped his F.A.M.E. album, and hours before he was set to appear on MTV’s “The Seven” to premiere his brand-new video for the single “Beautiful People,” an appearance he subsequently canceled. Later that night, at his album release party, Brown was reportedly in great spirits . He has also apologized for the “GMA” incident , saying on BET’s “106 & Park” that he was “disappointed in the way [he] acted.” All that drama hasn’t affected his album sales, though. According to Billboard, Brown’s F.A.M.E. album is set to debut atop the albums chart next week, with projected sales of 250,000-300,000 copies. Casey Abrams’ Save On ‘American Idol’: Fans React!

Most commenters thought the ‘Idol’ judges made the right decision to keep the quirky, bearded contestant on the show. By Gil Kaufman Casey Abrams Photo: FOX Casey Abrams looked like he was going to be sick when the “American Idol” judges announced on Thursday night that they had no doubt that he deserved this season’s one-and-only save. The bearded bass plucker tried to look happy, but the shock of the moment nearly dropped him to his knees, even as Randy, Jennifer and Steven explained to him that they were equally surprised he was this week’s lowest vote getter and that they couldn’t let such a prodigious talent slip away so soon. Based on the comments you made after Thursday night’s suspense-packed elimination show, most of you are on Team Casey, as well. “The people in America should recognize when they have tremendous artists like Casey and don’t vote them out just like that,” wrote Sharon. “The judges [were] completely right, CASEY deserves to be there, he is a unique [and] talented artist. CASEY YOU ROCK!!!!!” Peggy Sue couldn’t have agreed more, writing, “I’m glad the judges used their save on Casey. The save is meant to keep a flub-up happening such as someone going home too early, and the only other person I would want to save is James [Durbin] (maybe Jacob [Lusk]). It’s a good reminder for America to vote for their favorites, whether you think they are safe or not. Casey is a little bit unsteady — he is clearly very musical and fun and creative. He needs to use all of that to show us how he could entertain us in the big world, not in his backyard show.” Seeing Casey on the brink of elimination was a total shock for Sweetum29, who said Abrams deserved another chance thanks to his unique voice and winning personality. If anything, Sweetum wondered just what in the heck was wrong with America’s voters, opining, “This man always sings great and gives the audience a show instead of just standing in one spot blowing out a tune.” Among the dissenters was Scooter_88, who wrote that while Abrams and Paul McDonald are among the most talented musicians on season 10, “[they] do not have pop voices, so they will probably never win this show.” Sheila seconded that emotion, while adding, emphatically, that there was “nothing so special with his voice!!! he always yell[s] or scream[s] … very irritating.” Others referred to the bearded, J.Lo-anointed sex symbol as a “cheap imitation of [forgotten season-five winner] Taylor Hicks, but at least Taylor could sing. I think the judges wasted their save.” Perhaps Candy summed up the hirsute singer’s polarizing effect on some voters best with the pointed response, “Casey as the lowest is no surprise to me. His performances have been weird, he looks weird, he sounds weird, he acts weird, and he IS weird.” Reader Rimersh pointed out one of the long-running ironies of “Idol” voting, that “when someone is a clear favorite many will not vote,” which could explain how the heavily hyped Abrams ended up near the abyss.
