‘Walking Dead’ Death Was Necessary, Producer Says

‘The Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story,’ show runner Glen Mazzara tells MTV News about Jon Bernthal’s offing. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: Gene Page / AMC Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead! The inevitable has finally happened: Shane Walsh is dead. Double-dead, in fact. In the latest episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Better Angels,” Jon Bernthal’s disgruntled ex-cop finally met his demise at the hands of old friend-turned-new foe Rick Grimes. After luring Rick out into a field in search of missing prisoner Randall — whom Shane had already killed — Shane turned his gun on Rick, ready to kill his former partner and inherit his “broken wife” and “weak boy” as his own family. Rick ultimately talked Shane down, but what looked to be a peace offering was a trick of its own: Grimes plunged a knife through Shane’s heart, killing him in seconds … … and seconds later, Shane was back on his feet, a bloodthirsty zombie looking to finish the job. Thankfully for Rick, his son Carl arrived in the nick of time, gun in hand, to put a bullet through the undead Shane’s brain. Shane’s death was always a foregone conclusion in the minds of fans. Rampant rumors of Bernthal’s “Walking Dead” exit aside, the character’s demise occurs in the sixth issue of Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, making his eventual death a virtual certainty from the time Bernthal’s casting was announced. But speaking with MTV News, “Walking Dead” show runner Glen Mazzara revealed that Shane’s death wasn’t always part of the plan. “At one point, we considered not killing Shane,” Mazzara told MTV News. “But what’s important about this season is, Rick has to step forward. He has to assume leadership of the group and he has to confront Shane.” With that in mind, there was only one way for the Rick/Shane confrontation to end. Though Shane is killed by young Carl in the comics, it was important to the “Walking Dead” writers that Rick be the one to pull the trigger — or bury the knife, as the case may be — on the show. “Rick has to be the one to kill Shane. He needs to take control of the group,” Mazzara said. “That’s a huge loss for him, personally, for the group, but that’s what’s important about that: that it’s at Rick’s hand. We had considered doing it with a gun, but the knife was as personal as possible.” Many onlookers agree that Bernthal’s work as Shane has been the highlight of “Walking Dead” season two, so losing the character and the actor — especially so soon after Jeffrey DeMunn’s departure — is certainly a blow for the show. But for the writers, season two has largely been about transforming Rick from reluctant leader to confident decision-maker. In Mazzara’s opinion, the successful metamorphosis was made possible by Shane’s death. “It’s about Rick’s leadership, and if you see Rick [currently], when he steps forward and he discusses things with the group, you know that that’s a very different Rick than the one that came in at the beginning of the season,” the show runner said. “That’s what this season was about. It was about Rick, and the Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story. It was a problem that Rick had to deal with.” Will you miss Shane on “The Walking Dead,” or do you think he needed to die? Tell us in the comments section!

‘Walking Dead’ Creator Explains Shocking Death

‘It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous,’ Robert Kirkman tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler Jeffrey DeMunn in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead! Death is par for the course on “The Walking Dead,” but that knowledge wasn’t enough to prepare for the shocking death of fan-favorite character Dale. Veteran actor Jeffrey DeMunn made his final appearance on the AMC survival horror series on Sunday night, and as is custom for the show, his exit was a gruesome one: While strolling along the quiet fields of Hershel’s farm, Dale was mortally injured by a roaming zombie and, ultimately, euthanized by a bullet to the head from antihero Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). “Dale’s death comes at a time where he’s very much needed,” executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about the shocking decision to kill DeMunn’s character. “[Rick and the gang] are trying to make this decision on what to do with Randall. The farm is becoming increasingly dangerous. There is still tension between Rick and Shane, despite the fact that it appears that they’ve put much of their differences behind them for now. They need that moral compass [in Dale], and it’s been taken away.” Losing Dale will have massive repercussions on the rest of the “Walking Dead” cast, Kirkman promised. Chief among those feeling the sting will be Carl (Chandler Riggs), who was partially responsible for Dale’s death. Earlier in the episode, Carl wandered into the forest by himself and taunted a seemingly immobile zombie — the very same zombie that ripped Dale’s guts out. “It’s interesting to see Carl doing kid stuff: going out on his own, trying to prove he’s strong enough to kill a zombie, proving that he’s deserving of carrying a gun,” Kirkman said. “He instigated this whole situation. We’re going to deal with his emotions and what comes from him causing Dale’s death to a certain extent. That’s definitely one of the big repercussions where Dale’s death affects these characters.” Once again, Dale’s death proves that the “Walking Dead” TV series is more than willing to deviate from the “Walking Dead” comic books. In Kirkman’s comics, Dale survives dozens and dozens of issues before finally succumbing to a fatal zombie bite. Seeing the popular character leave the show so soon is bound to be a shock for longtime fans then — but that wasn’t the only kind of shock value Kirkman and company were aiming for. “One of the things we wanted to do is show how dangerous these zombies actually are,” Kirkman said. “We were sitting around the writers’ room early on in the planning of season two, and we thought, you know, there aren’t a lot of zombies actually succeeding in what they’re trying to do. They eat people here and there, but we’ve never really had a zombie actually take down one of our main characters — at least not for a while, not since the first season. We wanted to remind people how dangerous these creatures are. It also threw a wrench in everyone’s plans to take Dale off the table, so those two ideas merged into one until we eventually came to offing this character.” Fans aren’t just losing Dale, of course: they’re also losing DeMunn, one of the finest actors “The Walking Dead” has to offer. Taking an actor of such high caliber off the playing field is not something the “Dead” team treated lightly, Kirkman said. “It’s a tremendous loss,” he admitted. “It’s difficult. It’s difficult for the cast, because they’ve become pretty much a family hanging out in rural Georgia. They keep each other company. It’s definitely a big deal [losing Jeffrey]; it sucks for everybody. Jeffrey in particular brought a serious sense of gravitas to the role and definitely legitimized this show by gracing us with his presence. We were lucky to get an actor of his caliber. He added a lot to the show, and his presence is definitely going to be missed. “But,” Kirkman added, “this is ‘The Walking Dead.’ It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous, and in order to do that, you have to lose characters from time to time.” Were you shocked by Dale’s death? VIDEO: Shame Prompts Awesome ‘Den of Sin’ Campaign in South Carolina

Remember Shame ? The NC-17 one featuring Michael Fassbender as a sex addict, Carey Mulligan as his off-kilter sister, a couple of notorious ” late-night lovers ” and a thriving awards-season profile that imploded a month ago like a dying star, seemingly having taken the film with it? Right, that one. Now, as per the rules of the cosmos and/or art-house schemes in Columbia, S.C., that star has finally exploded back into consciousness in perhaps the best way possible. The flier pictured above was spotted in and around Columbia over the holiday weekend, urging local moviegoers to avoid the “den of sin” known as the Nickelodeon Theater. The 75-seat venue had finally booked Shame for a run, and without the benefit of a sustained Oscar campaign for erstwhile front-runner Fassbender , the fliers seemed to play right into the hands of Nickelodeon management. Too good to be true? WLTX Channel 19 is on the scene ! (Sorry in advance about the commercial.) The Onion would be proud. Sort of. Anyway, nicely played, Andy Smith! [ WLTX via Pullquote ]

Fanboy or Fascist?

“What the box office success of the re-released Special Editions told Hollywood is that the only way to create another global phenomenon is to make a new STAR WARS movie. 1997 was the start of the modern-day fanboy/geek culture that now runs Hollywood. Fanboy culture (Comic-Con, Harry Potter, Twilight , The Hunger Games, The Lord of the Rings , J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, Marvel comics, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Glee , Aint-It-Cool-News, Attack of the Show ) is a groupthink mentality that claims to be democratic, what with its we-know-what’s-best-because-we’re-fans ethic, but is really pop culture fascism. And it’s the fans’ demand (remember, fan is short for fanatic), that led to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace — the most hyped (and possibly most reviled) blockbuster in movie history.” [ Some Came Running ]

Michael Bay To Direct ‘Transformers 4,’ Producer Confirms

The fourth film, which will be released in summer of 2014, will be ‘an evolution,’ Lorenzo di Bonaventura tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan Optimus Prime in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Since late last year, rumors began firing off about a potential “Transformers” sequel or sequels, and they ran the gamut. Paramount might film two sequels back to back. Michael Bay might return for both. Jason Statham may be the new star. Rumors came and went, but perhaps the biggest question lingered: Will Bay return to direct ? The master of the big-budget explosion, Bay’s highly stylized eye for action lent the trilogy its signature look and breakneck pace. With potential sequels looming, no word had been given on whether Bay would return for any follow-ups. But at Toy Fair 2012, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed to MTV News that Bay would, indeed, return for a fourth “Transformers” film. “Michael’s going to direct, and it’ll be in the summer of 2014. We’ll be releasing then,” di Bonaventura said. Di Bonaventura said that the director is eager to get back to the franchise he started. “He’s a cool customer. He’s excited,” he said. “I think the challenge there is that we are really going to do a reboot and what that’s going to be, we don’t even know yet.” Bay will reportedly film the next “Transformers” after making “Pain and Gain,” which has Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg circling major roles. As for the Jason Statham rumors, di Bonaventura said that it is way too early in the process to decide something like casting. “No, it’s so silly. We have to get a story first,” he said. “You can’t pick characters if you don’t have a story.” With the series heading in the direction of a reboot, many new questions form about which characters and storylines will return. Di Bonaventura insisted that the fourth film will not be a hard reboot, but an “evolution.” “Again, it’s a hybrid because it’s a funny thing. I’m not involved with ‘Spider-Man,’ but what I perceive ‘Spider-Man’ to be is just a redoing of the whole thing. It’s not. It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, yet there will be a lot of new cast,” he said. “Whether there’s anybody from the first cast, we don’t even know yet. The trust is it’s going to be a whole new story. The characters that would certainly come along are Optimus and Bumblebee, I’m sure.” Are you excited for a “Transformers 4”? Leave your comment below! ‘Walking Dead’ Season Two Is All About ‘Escalation’

Finding Sophia “kicks things off in a big way,” writer Robert Kirkman tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC Killing zombies is no walk in the park. But harder still is killing your fellow man. Former sheriff Rick Grimes knows this all too well: In the most recent episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Nebraska,” our gun-slinging hero put down two hot-blooded humans with two well-placed pistol shots, all because they posed a potential threat to his family and friends. For Rick, killing these two travelers was just another step forward on the bloody path he’s been walking since the series first began — and he’s not the only one embracing his inner darkness. Indeed, the death of poor Sophia in the “Walking Dead” midseason finale was just the start of a shift in momentum toward a deadlier, faster-paced string of episodes, where each and every one of the show’s characters will find themselves tested. “I think the loss of Sophia and looking for Sophia was a big thing that anchored the entire story of the first half of our second season,” executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about what to look forward to in the rest of season two. “For them to find her in that last episode in such a way, it puts a button on that group of episodes and opens the world up for the next half of the season. It kicks things off in a big way. Finding Sophia is the beginning of an escalation that brings us all the way to the very end of the second season. People are going to begin to see that escalation over the next several episodes.” Shown runner Glen Mazzara agrees with Kirkman, adding that Rick and Hershel are taking the death of Sophia especially hard. “When Hershel sees his family coming out of that barn, he realizes he’s been mistaken about everything he believed,” he told MTV News. “Rick also loses hope. Those two men have to figure out how to lead the group.” But there’s another outlier in the mix: Shane Walsh, the disgruntled ex-cop who’s losing more respect for Rick and becoming increasingly dangerous with each passing day. “Shane doesn’t agree with either one of them, and he wants to take control of the group,” Mazzara said. “It really puts pressure on all of the characters in an interpersonal way that really makes the show incredibly exciting, to find out what’s going to happen and who’s going to lead that group.” What did you think of the latest “Walking Dead” episode? Ashley Greene Gives Her Spandex A Workout

I know I say all the time how annoying it is that all I ever get of Ashley Greene are shots of her heading to or leaving the gym, but I haven’t really seen her in a while and I’ve missed these intimate moments. Alright so it’s only been a few days since I’ve last seen her, but the girl is hot and makes me fell special in my no-no spot so getting her walking around in her spandex is a nice little treat. You’re welcome.

‘Star Wars’ Celeb Fans Name Their Favorite Characters

Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt and more stars name-drop some well-known characters … and Dengar. By Kevin P. Sullivan Boba Fett Photo: Lucasfilm In anticipation of Friday’s theatrical release of “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” in 3-D, MTV News has been asking folks in the entertainment biz to name their favorite “Star Wars” characters. Many of their choices are quite familiar — Chewbacca, R2-D2, Han Solo, etc. — and some … not so much. “The Walking Dead” writer Robert Kirkman likes the Rancor monster that lives underneath Jabba the Hutt’s throne room; it entertains the sluggish crime lord by violently devouring its unfortunate victims. Kirkman also favors another lesser-known character: “I was always partial to [reptilian bounty hunter] Bossk,” he said, “but I think now I’m going pretty deep, so I don’t want people to ridicule me too much.” Kirkman isn’t alone in his admiration of a bounty hunter; “Young Adult” star Patton Oswalt likes Boba Fett’s bandage-headed buddy, Dengar. Actor/writer/director/”Star Wars” superfan Kevin Smith’s preference is slightly less glamorous. “My favorite, hands down, is Power Droid,” Smith said. “He was a little square box, very easy to imitate at home with a refrigerator box. So you could literally become that character.” The simple service droid doesn’t get much screen time in the series, but Smith has big plans for it nonetheless. “I would like to take that guy and do a whole movie about his adventures,” he said. “Wouldn’t be very interesting or entertaining, but a lot of people said neither was ‘Phantom Menace.’ ” Ambivalence regarding “Episode I” notwithstanding, that film does feature a few beloved characters. Keegan Allen from “Pretty Little Liars” is most impressed by Darth Maul, with his double-bladed lightsaber and fierce facial tattoos. “Darth Maul is the sickest ‘Star Wars’ character, period,” Allen said. And then there’s the Jedi master Darth Maul cruelly defeated. “The Grey” director Joe Carnahan’s nomination of Liam Neeson’s character may have been a polite overture to his star, but Qui-Gon Jinn does deserve a mention when discussing the great players of the franchise. “He trained Obi-Wan [Kenobi], he’s got lovely hair, a lovely beard, and he was a good mentor,” Neeson said. What more could one want from a “Star Wars” hero? Check out everything we’ve got on ” Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Walking Dead’ Star Jon Bernthal Explains Shane’s ‘Trek’

‘You’re not doing it to be the hero but because you love him,’ actor tells MTV News of his character’s dangerous choices. By Josh Wigler Jon Bernthal Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images “Walking Dead” character Shane Walsh ( Jon Bernthal ) cannot catch a break. Once the alpha dog in this ragtag group of survivors, Shane is now at the bottom of the totem pole with everything stripped away from him: Former lover Lori has returned to his best friend Rick’s open arms, everyone’s following Rick’s lead, and Shane wants nothing more than to get the heck out of Dodge and kiss a bad situation goodbye. But all that changed the moment that Carl Grimes, Rick and Lori’s young son, took a bullet to the gut. In an instant, Shane changed his tune and set out to help his best friend get through a desperate situation by risking life and limb to secure medical supplies for Carl’s surgery. But as is so often the case on “The Walking Dead,” things did not go as planned, and Shane now finds himself cornered by a pack of flesh-hungry walkers with no apparent way out. It’s an especially scary situation considering that the smash-hit AMC series — now two episodes into its second season — has already passed the point in which Shane died in the “Walking Dead” comic books, leaving one to wonder whether or not this is the final hoorah for Rick’s best pal. You might think that Shane, who was a split second from leaving this group just one episode ago, is currently regretting his decision to go out and help Carl. But actor Jon Bernthal has a different explanation for his character’s choice. “One of the things I love about this show is that the situations and circumstances give these characters an opportunity to redeem themselves,” Bernthal told MTV News about Shane’s current mind-set. “You can be completely on the outs with everyone in the group, but then here’s this wonderful opportunity to redeem yourself. Save the kid, the kid you love. Save the woman you love’s child. Save your best friend that your relationship is dead and gone. You’re doing it not to be the hero but because you love him.” Doing great, brave things in the name of love is a noble idea, but it’s a dangerous one as well, Bernthal warned. “With Shane, I think he really figures out, he adopts this new world order in this new world they’re living in. Things like guilt, shame and trying to do things that are morally right are far less important and really have no place in this new world compared to surviving and doing what you have to do to stay alive and protect the people you love,” he said. “If you take that a step further, it gets very dangerous very fast: If you’re with a group of people and you’re trying to survive and one person is holding you back or slowing you down, in this world, the right thing to do is to help that person and bring them along,” he continued. “In [the world of ‘The Walking Dead’], the right thing to do is to kill that person and send them away. I think Shane, that whole kind of mission you’re referring to, I think it starts Shane off on a trek that will change him forever.” Either Shane’s “trek” is going to be a short one, or he’ll find some way to survive his current situation. Regardless of what happens next, Bernthal teased that Shane’s episode three future is all about “going on that mission, man. Going on that mission and making hard choices.” What did you think of this week’s “Walking Dead”? Tell us in the comments.
