The Cast of ‘Snowfall’ On John Singleton Defending Black History & How They Honor His Legacy On Set [Exclusive]

Source: Courtesy FX Networks / FX Networks Snowfall Cast Talks Significance Of John Singleton’s Hit Crime Series We are still mourning the loss of beloved director, producer, and screenwriter John Singleton . But, as difficult as it is for each one of us, we can only imagine how deeply his friends, family, and colleagues have been affected. Prior to their NYC screening of the season 3 premiere episode, the Snowfall cast talked to Bossip about what Singleton meant to each one of them and what it’s been like to carry on with his legacy. For those who don’t watch, Snowfall is Singleton’s creation… a way to tell the truth about how crack really became a widespread epidemic in the Black community. Damson Idris , who plays kingpin Franklin Saint on the hit FX series, tells Bossip Singleton’s presence is still very much felt on set. “We have a chair on set with John’s name on it, so he’s still with us,” he reveals. “For me personally, he was my big brother. He was like my sensei. He taught me so many codes. The best thing about John was that he empowered everyone around him. So even in his absence, which isn’t an absence, we’re able to stay confident, carry on his vision, keep his authenticity and make him proud. If he saw this whole season, he would’ve been proud. That’s what lets me sleep at night.” Angela Lewis adds that though they play a family on-screen, they’ve also become family off-screen and continue to face the loss of their mentor and friend together. “I think it would’ve been harder to not go on,” Lewis said. “He would have been disappointed. We lift each other up, we have each other’s backs, we are such a family. We cry together, we laugh together, we remember him together, we honor him together, and to not continue would have been awful.”  Michael Hyatt plays Franklin Saint’s mom on the crime series and she shook the room when she chimed in. “We have all been injected with John’s guidance, his vision, his greatness,” Hyatt began. “And, what he left us with (as everybody is saying) is a rope that started with him and has just weaved through all of us. What we have developed is a oneness, I think. John started his dream to give voice to the voiceless, to tell the stories that were not being told in the truthful manner that they deserved to be told — and he has injected all of us with that. It is our duty, our responsibility to protect this show and protect John and to continue that task of protecting Cissy, Louie, Jerome, and Franklin and all of the stories that we’re telling… because we understand that we are telling the stories of our ancestors, our cousins, our sisters, our brothers, our mothers, and fathers. It’s not just a job, we are conduits of truth, telling the story to many people who don’t understand it. I was a kid at Howard, or even living in NY… I didn’t know what the f*ck those pipe things were on the floor. I didn’t know any of this sh*t — what consciousness did I have? I am learning a part of my community. If that’s my story, how many of US understand what was happening to us? How many of US believe the stories that we saw on the news… of these ‘wayward people who don’t have a future and they’re doing crack?’ These are the things that we were fed, but thankfully, with someone like John — who says ‘no, that is not what was happening. Let me tell you what was happening’ — now our children, we all have an understanding of what really the f*ck was going on. And, we will take this knowledge into the future, where there will be some other drama where we’re being manipulated. This will allow us to think: ‘Wait a second. What they’re feeding me on television, I don’t have to eat. Because I know there’s another truth.’ That’s what John has done.” Season 3 of Snowfall premieres tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET on FX. Tune in.

Serena Williams Writes Moving Essay Regarding 2018 U.S. Open Loss

Source: TPN / Getty Serena Williams is currently playing in Wimbledon and made it to the semifinals after gutting out a 2-1 match against fellow American Alison Riske. While the tennis world is still very much tuned in to Williams’ exploits on the court, an essay she penned as part of Harper’s Bazaar August cover story shares details of her controversial 2018 U.S. Open match against Naomi Osaka . From Harper’s Bazaar : “Hey, Naomi! It’s Serena Williams. As I said on the court,I am so proud of you and I am truly sorry. I thought I was doing the right thing in sticking up for myself. But I had no idea the media would pit us against each other. I would love the chance to live that moment over again. I am, was, and will always be happy for you and supportive of you. I would never, ever want the light to shine away from another female, specifically another black female athlete. I can’t wait for your future, and believe me I will always be watching as a big fan! I wish you only success today and in the future. Once again, I am so proud of you. All my love and your fan, Serena.” When Naomi’s response came through, tears rolled down my face. “People can misunderstand anger for strength because they can’t differentiate between the two,” she said graciously. “No one has stood up for themselves the way you have and you need to continue trailblazing.” It was in this moment that I realized the real reason the US Open was so hard for me to get over: It wasn’t because of the backlash I faced but rather because of what had happened to the young woman who deserved so much more in her special moment. I had felt that it was my fault and that I should have kept my mouth closed. But now, seeing her text putting everything in perspective, I realized she was right. Classy. The entire piece actually dives deep into the perception that women athletes face far more scrutiny than their male counterparts when it comes to being expressive on the court, the field, and in life period. The entire essay is a worthy read full of self-reflection and humility. Read the essay in full here . It’s not about quitting when someone presents a challenge; it’s about getting up when you are down, dusting yourself off and asking, ‘Is that the best you got?’” Read #SerenaWilliams full essay in our unretouched issue at the link in bio. Jay Smith Launches GoFundMe to Fight Deportation, Is Accused of Rape

Last week, 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? star Jay Smith was arrested and placed in ICE custody . He was arrested for violating Ashley's PFA – an order put in place to prevent domestic violence. Now, Ashley has revealed why she was advised to take out the order and just how quickly Jay violated it. A GoFundMe has been started in Jay's name and it has already raked in thousands of dollars. Two of Jay's 90 Day Fiance castmates have spoken out in some degree of support of him. But with this latest accusation – of sexual assault – it's unclear how many supporters he still has. 1. Jay is not having a good July He went from being a free man with more than a month before his alleged deportation date to being locked in a cell awaiting deportation, and every day new information comes out that paints him in a worse light. 2. It started when Ashley left home for a while Her mother watched her two children while she went to a women’s wellness retreat, and then she joined her family on a cruise. After all that she’d been through, including a health scare just days earlier, it sounded like exactly what she needed. 3. Unfortunately … Ashley has since revealed that, during her absence from home, Jay allegedly broke into her house. We’ve heard multiple accounts of disputes over property during their split, but obviously, breaking and entering is a crime. 4. Attorney For White Man Who Killed Elijah El-Amin Over Rap Music Argues ‘This Is A Disabled Person’

Read this article:

E lijah Al-Amin was a 17-year-old who was fatally stabbed by 27-year-old Michael Paul Adams. The child was killed all because he was listening to hip hop music. Now, the attorney for Adams is using the excuse that he was “disabled.” See Also: Outrageous! Figurines Of White Cherub Crushing Head Of Black Angel Removed From Dollar Store His attorney Jacie Cotterell told Good Evening Arizona , “This is a disabled person and he’s been released into the world and left to fend for himself, two days later — this is where we are.” She claims the department of corrections failed “Elijah with no resources or psychiatric help even though he had a past of severe mental illness.” However, being disabled or mentally ill does not make you a white supremacist. Court records say that Adams admitted he killed the 17-year-old because rap music made him feel “unsafe” and he was being “proactive, not reactive” but killing the chid. He believed rap was a threat to himself and his community. On Thursday, July 4, Al-Amin got off work from Subway around 11:30 p.m. and visited his girlfriend. While at a a gas station in Peoria, Arizona, he was stabbed by Adams around 1:45 a.m. He was about to turn 18 in less than two weeks Elijah’s father told KVOU, “2 o’clock came, 3 o’clock came, 4 o’clock came, I kept calling, calling,  calling, texting, texting, texting, and I wasn’t getting a response. I just had a feeling that something wasn’t right.” He continued, “ You took a helluva kid… He was a good kid, very good kid, always willing to help kids, help people in general.” Michael Adams was booked on a first-degree murder charge. Watch his father below: The mentally ill excuse for white people who kill Black people is an ongoing theme. In July of 2018, 18-year-old Nia Wilson was killed by James Cowell. Shortly after the tragedy, his family released a statement with the  “mentally ill” excuse. The statement read in part, “John has been suffering from mental illness most of his life. He has been in & out of Jail & has not had the proper treatment.” As of April , Cowell’s criminal case has been suspended to evaluate his mental competency. We hope Elijah Al-Amin gets justice. Put Some RESPECK On Her Name: Nicki Minaj Blasts Begrudgers ‘Blind’ To Her Big Barb Impact

Source: Dutch Press Photo/WENN.com / WENN Nicki Minaj Addresses Lack Of Support From Lady Rappers And Media Nicki Minaj is out to protect her legacy in a world where folks conveniently forget their Fairy Rap Godmothers . Last night, the Queen Barb went on a lengthy rant addressing the lack of support she’s being shown from fans and media. She wrote: “12 years ago I dropped my 1st mixtape. Wrote every single word on every single song. I was so proud of that, eventually the Barbz were all wearing pink hair, Chinese bangs, & Barbie chains. Colorful wigs came all the way back in style. Everyone became Barbies & Dolls.” It seems like Nicki’s biggest gripe is that she’s omitted from conversations when it comes to her impact. It’s well known that Cardi B doesn’t consider her an “influence.” Recently, Barbs attacked Meg Thee Stallion for omitting Nicki from her Top 5, but the rapper clarified in a video that she pays homage to Nicki. Onika continued, noting how its “cool” to pretend she wasn’t influential: “I always shouted out my influences in my interviews. Now a days, it’s become cool to pretend u weren’t influenced by other artists. S/O to the ones big enough to do it: Kash, Asian, Cuban, Saweetie, Meg, Malibu, YOUNG MA, Ms. Banks, Lady Leshurr, etc. No female rapper (other than Trina) did a song w/me or congratulated me on my billboard accomplishments. I didn’t mind. I never felt they were obligated to do so. Just like Beyoncé isn’t obligated to congratulate or collaborate with Normani, etc.” Obviously, Nicki’s success wasn’t due to a social media wave and notes that she came up organically, putting in massive amounts of work to top the Billboard charts. “I never had a crusade by radio stations, influencers & blogs to make my song number 1 when Anaconda was #2 on the Hot 100. I never had a group of men in the studio writing my songs for me so it took a while between albums. Please stop these write ups about what I didn’t do. Y’all are rlly sick & ima call y’all out one by one on Queen Radio. Most of yall doing these write ups have never fought for anything in life. You just sit on the sidelines & watch the doers do!!!! To my fans; I love, cherish you, adore you, and thank you. God bless you.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Barbie® (@nickiminaj) on Jul 5, 2019 at 11:01am PDT Nicki says she plans to name names on her Queen Radio podcast, so you can’t bet she gets specific with who ticked her off soon.
