‘Hunger Games’ Soundtrack: Pre-Game With An Expert Playlist

Hobnobbing helps you get to know the album’s featured artists through their best works. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate On Monday, Taylor Swift will enter the MTV arena to debut the music video for her Civil Wars collaboration, “Safe and Sound,” which appears on the “Hunger Games” soundtrack. And following the premiere, the country cutie will stick around MTV.com for an exclusive 30-minute interview about the lead single, her upcoming projects and more. So for Peeta’s sake, tune in, OK? But as any “Hunger Games” fan can attest, Swift isn’t the only artist to be reaped for the T-Bone Burnett-produced companion album (out March 20). Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, Neko Case and Miranda Lambert are all reportedly contributing to the effort. So to prepare for what’s sure to be an epic soundtrack, we’ve asked several music experts to recommend top tunes from each performer—a pre-Games playlist, if you will. So put down your bow and arrow, grab your earbuds and settle in with these hand-picked selections: The Decemberists “No shortage of truly great tunes (with truly epic titles) from the Pacific Northwest’s leading purveyors of erudite indie. From the hard-charging horns of ‘Sixteen Military Wives’ (off 2005’s Picaresque ) to the 12-string shimmy of ‘Down by the Water’ (from last year’s The King Is Dead ) — with proggy dalliances like ‘You’ll Not Feel the Drowning’ and ‘The Prettiest Whistles Won’t Wrestle the Thistles Undone’ in between — the ‘rists have never met a genre they wouldn’t tackle … or a song title they couldn’t stretch to infinity. — James Montgomery, Rock Writer, MTV News “The Decemberists are often described as ‘indie-folk’ or ‘chamber pop,’ but they are constantly shifting into new genres and playing with foreign sounds. ‘Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect’ is from their first album and doesn’t have the same epic quality that their later albums (most of which are sprawling mini-operas), but it does capture frontman Colin Meloy’s unending melancholy and slightly fanciful worldview. It’s catchy as hell too.” — Kyle Anderson, Staff Writer, Entertainment Weekly “Asking me to choose a favorite Decemberists song is like asking me to choose a favorite pair of shoes — I have so many! It’s almost impossible! But I’ll do it. The apotheosis of the entire Decemberists catalogue, for me, is ‘Shanty for the Arethusa’ off of their 2003 album Her Majesty the Decemberists . This isn’t a song. It’s a sensory odyssey. Dude, the way they bring to life the creaking of the rotten hull of an olde-timey ship feels so real that I can almost feel myself getting scurvy.” — Tamar Anitai, Managing Editor, MTV Buzzworthy Arcade Fire “They broke through with Funeral, thanks in no small part to anthemic, wide-screen melodramas like ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Rebellion (Lies)’ — songs seemingly created for stadium-uniting sing-alongs — backtracked on that all-encompassing stance with insular, world-weary Neon Bible tracks like ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘My Body is a Cage,’ and, finally, with The Suburbs, ‘Month of May’ and ‘We Used to Wait,’ just decided to ditch all the subtlety and subterfuge and just become Springsteen disciples. Hey, whatever works.” — Montgomery “Canada’s finest indie exports move at only two speeds: Epic and super-epic. ‘No Cars Go’ falls in the latter category, beginning with a simple hum-and-strum, then building into great swirls of chaotic orchestral noise, with the damaged, desperate voices of frontpeople/couple Win Butler and R

Taylor Kitsch’s Super Bowl Ads Needed More Taylor Kitsch

‘Friday Night Lights’ actor, set to break out in ‘John Carter,’ ‘Battleship,’ should have been featured more prominently. By Kevin P. Sullivan Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Walt Disney Pictures Millions of people around the world were introduced to Taylor Kitsch Sunday night. The Canadian actor found himself at the center of two of the Super Bowl’s biggest movie ads for his first two starring roles, in “John Carter” and “Battleship,” but the trailers may not have been the first impression Kitsch was hoping for. Kitsch made a name for himself starring as the misunderstood bad boy Tim Riggins on the beloved but criminally under-watched NBC series “Friday Night Lights.” Riggins grew dear to the show’s viewers because of the charm and likability Kitsch brought to the character, despite a tough exterior. Throughout the show’s run, it was never a stretch to imagine the actor making the crossover to big-budget action movies with his charisma as hard evidence of his bankability. But for his Super Bowl debuts, the studios behind “John Carter” and “Battleship” took the focus off of their star and instead cut special-effects shots together, leaving Kitsch as little more than background noise. The “John Carter” trailer that aired during the game handled its time the most curiously. Beginning with a shot of Kitsch from the film, the footage grew smaller, eventually becoming part of a large collection of footage that formed letters spelling out the title of the film. By the time most of the video appeared on the screen, it was too small to make any sense of it. What many people may not have known was that an extended version of the commercial, one with full-sized footage from the film, appeared online shortly after. That trailer showed off Kitsch during action sequences instead of zooming away from him. The ad for “Battleship” approached promoting a big-budget sci-fi movie in a more traditional way, albeit one that also put Kitsch in the background. The spot played more like a commercial for the other series of movies based on Hasbro toys, “Transformers,” and the scattered nature of it might have left people wondering whether the film stars Kitsch, Liam Neeson or Rihanna . Sure, these are just commercials, but if 2012 is going to be the year that Taylor Kitsch makes the crossover from TV heartthrob to viable action star, studios ought to realize who they’re working with and put the man front and center. Check out everything we’ve got on “John Carter” and “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Madonna Halftime Show: The Reviews Are In!

Super Bowl performance reinstates Madge as ‘the biggest pop vixen on the planet.’ By Jocelyn Vena Madonna performs at Super Bowl XLVI Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Madonna did it all on Sunday night when she performed during the Super Bowl halftime show in Indianapolis. She was an Egyptian Queen “Vogue”-ing it up for her biggest devotees. She was a cheerleader, cheering on L-U-V alongside a middle-finger flinging M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj for “Give Me All Your Luvin’.” She got her “Music” on with LMFAO and she sang the gospel of “Like a Prayer” with Cee Lo Green. In a sea of costume changes (with looks by Givenchy and Adidas Originals Jeremy Scott), dancers, acrobats, A-list collaborators and a killer set list, Madonna seemed to leave very little to chance. Sure, there were a few slip-ups , but, in the end, Madonna ensured that all anyone would be talking about around the water cooler come Monday morning was her, whether or not you completely loved what she did during the show. “It’s Madonna Louise Ciccone’s world, we’re just living in it,” Billboard.com wrote about her 12-minute-plus performance. “The pop icon took to the world’s biggest stage to rock three-and-a-half older tracks and a playful new song during the Super Bowl halftime show.” While the Super Bowl audience is usually dominated by people who most likely aren’t Madge fans, the singer, according to one review, seemed indifferent to that fact. “Madonna was defiantly unconcerned with the more conservative red state wing of the football fanbase who’d never be caught dead singing along to one of her songs,” the Los Angeles Times noted about her performance. “And her halftime show was pure spectacle by the Cleopatra of the game.” The show, according to the Chicago Tribune , wasn’t just about her, but also about reminding fans that she’s about to drop her next album, MDNA, in March. “This was Madonna’s party, and besides breaking off bits of her greatest hits to remind people of a time when she was the biggest pop vixen on the planet, she had important career-advancing work to do,” the review noted. “Madonna, after all, never does anything unless she’s got something to sell, and with a new studio album due out in March and a tour to follow, she had plenty on her to-do list.” Leave your review of Madonna’s halftime performance in the comments below! Mitt “Shine My Shoes” Romney Reveals Tax Info On The $42.6M He’s Made Over The Past 2 Years

Mitt Romney is a baller: Mitt Romney offered a partial snapshot of his vast personal fortune late Monday, disclosing income of $21.7 million in 2010 and $20.9 million last year — virtually all of it profits, dividends or interest from investments. None came from wages, the primary source of income for most Americans. Instead, Romney and his wife, Ann, collected millions in capital gains from a profusion of investments, as well as stock dividends and interest payments. The couple gave away $7 million in charitable contributions over the past two years, including at least $4.1 million to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Romney’s family has for generations been among the Mormon Church’s most prominent members. The Romneys sent somewhat less to Washington over that period, paying an estimated $6.2 million in federal income taxes. According to his 2010 return, Romney paid about $3 million to the IRS, for an effective tax rate of 13.9 percent. For 2011, Romney estimates that he will pay about $3.2 million, for an effective rate of 15.4 percent. That’s in line with his earlier estimates, but sharply lower than the rates paid by President Obama and Romney’s closest Republican rival, Newt Gingrich. “You’ll see my income, how much taxes I’ve paid, how much I’ve paid to charity,” Romney said at a debate Monday night in Tampa. “I pay all the taxes that are legally required and not a dollar more. I don’t think you want someone as the candidate for president who pays more taxes than he owes.” He said his tax bill is “entirely legal and fair,” adding: “I’m proud of the fact that I pay a lot of taxes.” Romney released his tax returns — nearly 550 pages, including the 2010 returns for three family trust funds and a foundation — in a bid to regain his footing in the Republican presidential campaign after stumbling badly in last weekend’s South Carolina primary. The returns confirm, however, that Romney continues to benefit from his association with Bain Capital, the private-equity firm he founded in 1984 and left in 1999. His earnings through Bain have drawn controversy because they are treated as capital gains rather than wages and thus benefit from being taxed at the lower rate of 15 percent. Critics say such income, known as “carried interest,” should not be counted as investment earnings because private-equity partners are mostly relying on the money of others rather than their own. The returns show that Romney earned more than $13 million in “carried interest” over the past two years. Complicated as they are, the tax returns provide only a partial picture of Romney’s wealth. They don’t show the full extent of his net assets, which are estimated to be worth between $190 million and $250 million. Romney has an individual retirement account worth between $20.7 million and $101.6 million, according to his 2011 financial disclosure. He also has a blind trust for his wife, Ann, containing $10 million. Source

Were You Watching? “Love And Hip-Hop” Finale Leaves Yandy Without A Job, Kimbella And Emily Without A Man And Olivia Without A Deal!

RESPECT THE BUMP!!! That should have been the theme for this season of “Love and Hip-Hop”. Considering that one of the first episodes revealed that Kimbella likely slept with Emily B.’s man Fab while she was knocked up, did it seem like karma when she informed her parents she was toting a second gut full of Juelz — with him nowhere in sight? It’s a great theme since there now seem to be bumps galore amongst the ladies. Rumor has it that Yandy is holding a gut full of Dipset affiliate ManDC (@deeone129 on Twitter) and although she’s denied it — our sources say they’ve seen her and she’s definitely holding… Hopefully he’s bringing in some big checks managing Vado because last night’s episode made it clear that Yandy is no longer employed by Jim Jones… Speaking of which, what did you think of his moms’ “Psychotic” performance? Her one-time bump – baby Jimmy may be more successful than her now but for how long? After all Nancy has a single on iTunes and her own show in the works. She’s doing better than Olivia, riiiight? The finale also saw Olivia standing her ground, turning down a sh**ty deal, even if it means she’ll have to give up her expensive shoe habit to finance her career and going head to head with Funkmaster Flex. Clap it up for her? What we are clapping it up for is Chrissy, for keeping that nice rack on display. After delivering a beatdown or two this season, she seems to be in a better place with Jimmy’s mom and is getting that TLC she so loves in the form of a trip to Montego Bay. We live tweeted the show last night though and it seemed like folks thought they spied a bump on her as well, underneath that cover up. Is that the secret to her nice rack? What is in the water over there at the “Love & Hip-Hop” set??? It’s been a bumpy road for Emily B. as she struggled to decide whether to stick to her guns or go running home to Fab. But as the finale ended she stated how much she wanted her “respect” and wouldn’t settle for less than monogamy from Fab. How long do you think that will last, once the cameras are off? Cuz we heard they’re already back together but haven’t heard anything about a wedding. Do you think she should stay or go? And speaking of staying or going — how confused were you about whether or not Kimbella and Juelz broke up? That girl talks in circles so much we couldn’t tell WTF was going on, but we did a little digging and found out that Juelz is now back with his first baby mama. Kimbella, looks like your bump is getting no respect. One last juicy tidbit for you guys. We hear there’ll be no traditional “Love and Hip-Hop” reunion because these women can’t stand each other enough to be in the same room. So instead Mona Scott Young will just do some recaps and individual interviews. We know you must be so disappointed about that. More On Bossip!
