‘Avatar’ Sequels Planned For December 2014, ’15

Director James Cameron outlines his plan to shoot the sequels together. By Aly Semigran Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington in “Avatar” Photo: 20th Century Fox On James Cameron’s watch, come 2014 and 2015, it will, in fact, be a blue, blue Christmas. The writer/producer/director, who was at the helm of 2009’s Oscar-winning, box-office-record-breaking “Avatar,” told Entertainment Weekly that fans of the big-screen digital breakthrough should expect its subsequent sequels within the next three to four years. “I am in the process of writing the next two ‘Avatar’ films now,” Cameron said. “We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart.” Cameron said that the “current plan” is for the follow-ups to hit theaters by “Christmas ’14 and ’15.” While the first “Avatar” took more than four years from inception to screen, Cameron told MTV News back in December 2009, “My next goal is to refine the technique, make it easier so it doesn’t take as long.” “From the time we capture and finish the capture, it’s literally nine to 10 months to get the CG characters working, to get their facial musculature working. … So now we have Jake, we have Neytiri. Sam can step right back into it, the characters will fit them like a glove, and we’ll just go on. So a lot of the start-up torque that had to be done for one movie really makes more sense if you play it out across several films,” Cameron explained. While the 56-year-old did not divulge on too many plot details for the “Avatar” sequels, he did confirm to EW that characters such as Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), should be expected to make a return. “Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form,” Cameron said. After hinting that the sequels would take place in Pandora’s ocean, Cameron spoke to MTV News last year about how he would make the new environment come to life. “I think what we should do there is — because we’ll have to have characters that are in and under the water — is that we should actually capture them underwater,” the “Titanic” director said. And while Cameron’s storyline may change from the first to the second and third films, it seems his purpose behind the project has stayed steadfast. “Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the ‘Avatar’ world,” he told EW. “I didn’t want to make more ‘Avatar’ movies without a grander plan in place.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Teresa Scanlan Crowned Miss America 2011

Teresa Scanlan is more than the latest Miss America pageant winner. She’s also a maker of history. The 17-year old from Gering, Nebraska was named the youngest champion of all-time on Saturday night, earning the crown by performing “White Water Chopsticks” on the piano. She was the only contestant to neither sing nor dance. A graduate of Scottsbluff High School, Scanlan has earned a $50,000 scholarship and will attend Patrick Henry College in the fall. During her year-long tenure, Teresa said her main focus will be on eating disorders and how they affect her generation. If she can’t fulfill her duties – and, really, you never know with beauty queens – the runner-up (Miss Arkansas, Alyse Eady) will take over.

Matt Damon Recognized At Critics’ Choice Awards For Water.org Charity

‘True Grit’ actor receives Joel Siegel Award. By Aly Semigran Matt Damon accepts the Joel Siegel Award at the Critics’ Choice Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images While Matt Damon has taken the back seat to his “True Grit” co-stars Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld so far this awards season, the actor was acknowledged Friday night (January 14) by the Broadcast Film Critics Association during the 16th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards for his humanitarian efforts. In a segment presented by Jimmy Kimmel and Emily Blunt, Damon was given the fourth annual Joel Siegel Award for Service to the Community. While Kimmel provided comic relief, joking that the Oscar winner is “the greatest guy in the world,” the actor received serious accolades for his charity, Water.org. Blunt, who stars with Damon in the upcoming film “The Adjustment Bureau,” explained that the organization Damon co-founded with Gary White helps to “provide developing countries with safe drinking water and sanitation by partnering with local communities.” As Blunt delivered the staggering statistics that less than 1 percent of the Earth’s water is drinkable and more than 1 billion people don’t have access to clean water, Kimmel continued to kid with Damon, telling him, “Sean Penn is actually in Haiti right now … carrying things!” Kimmel, who gets the last laugh at Damon’s expense every night on his late-night show, then cried foul on Damon’s many awards, mocking, “You know how much water he wasted in that shower scene in “School Ties”? A lot!” Damon, playing as good a sport as ever to Kimmel’s jabs, then took the stage to accept his award to a standing-ovation audience that included his “Good Will Hunting” collaborator Ben Affleck. After taking a shot back at Kimmel — “I literally have no idea why you’re here,” he quipped — Damon got serious about receiving what he described as “a wonderful honor.” The actor acknowledged the work of late film critic Joel Siegel, who, as Damon told the crowd, “Believed that you should use celebrity to improve the lives of others and he lived that way. So, I’m really honored to get this in his name.” Though plenty of the segment included joking around with Kimmel, Damon got very serious when he delivered the news that, “Every 15 seconds, a kid somewhere on planet Earth dies because they don’t have access to clean water and sanitation.” Calling that information “disgusting and unacceptable and unnecessary,” he added, “These are issues we’ve known how to solve here for 100 years in our country. … Just imagine if we cured AIDS tomorrow and in 100 years people were still dying of it, 3 million of them a year. It’s just really ridiculous.” Damon concluded his speech by thanking his partner, White, and informed viewers that by donating $25 on the Water.org website, they could give a child “clean water for life.” He then promised that they would change the fact that 1 billion people do not have clean water and offered to viewers, “Feel free to join us.” Related Videos Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet Interviews Related Photos 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards Celebrity Candids 2011 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Show Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet 2011
