Second Oil Rig has been leaking in Gulf since April 30th

In the wake of yet another possible oil spill in the Gulf region, the United States Coast Guard has decided to launch an investigation into the dark waters surrounding Taylor Energy Corporation's Ocean Saratoga rig, resting only 40 miles away from the Deepwater Horizon rig. Though the rig has been leaking since at least April 30, the rig's owner, Taylor Energy Corporation, and operator, Diamond Offshore Drilling, are both declining to comment. Taylor's spokesperson Denise Fields told Huffington Post that the company would be issuing a press release this afternoon. Mobile, Alabama's Press Register reported that a 10-mile long slick emanating from the rig is visible from space. Earlier today, Mother Jones's Kate Sheppard reported that John Amos of West Virginia-based nonprofit SkyTruth, was the first to notice the spill, observing an oil slick eleven miles off the coast of Louisiana. After viewing satellite images of the reported second spill, Amos concluded that the Deep Water Horizon and the Saratoga spills are independent of one another, meaning the Gulf cleanup situation may be getting worse before it gets better. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/08/ocean-saratoga-another-oi_n_604812.html http://blog.al.com/live/2010/06/another_gulf_oil_spill_well_ne.html added by: jeffissleeping

Shocking New Report: The CIA Performed Human Experiments on Prisoners Under Bush

Over the last year there have been an increasing number of accounts suggesting that, along with the CIA's “enhanced interrogation” torture program, there was a related program experimenting with and researching the application of the torture. For example, in the seven paragraphs released by a British court summarizing observations by British counterintelligence agents of the treatment of Binyan Mohamed by the CIA, the first two of these paragraphs these paragraphs stated: It was reported that a new series of interviews was conducted by the United States authorities prior to 17 May 2002 as part of a new strategy designed by an expert interviewer…. BM had been intentionally subjected to continuous sleep deprivation. The effects of the sleep deprivation were carefully observed. [emphasis added] The suggestion was that a new strategy was being tested and the results carefully examined. Several detainees have provided similar accounts, expressing their belief that their interrogations were being carefully studied, apparently so that the techniques could be modified based on the results. Such research would violate established laws and ethical rules governing research. Since Nazi doctors who experimented upon prisoners in the concentration camps were put on trial at Nuremberg, the U.S. and other countries have moved toward a high ethical standard for research on people. All but the most innocuous research requires the informed consent of those studied. Further, all research on people is subject to review by independent research ethics committees, known as Institutional Review Boards or IRBs. In the U.S., there was a major push toward more stringent research ethics when the existence of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study was publicly revealed in the early 1970s. In that study nearly 400 poor rural African-American men were denied existing treatment for their syphilis, and indeed, were never told they had syphilis by participating doctors. The study by the U.S. Public Health Service was intended to continue until the last of these men died of syphilis. When the study became public the resulting outcry helped cement evolving ethical standards mandating informed consent for any research with even a possibility of causing harm. These rules were codified in what has become known as the Common Rule, which applies to nearly all federally-funded research, including all research by the CIA. Experiments in Torture A new report of which I am a coauthor, Experiments in Torture: Evidence of Human Subject Research and Experimentation in the “Enhanced” Interrogation Program, just released by Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) confirms previous suspicions and provides the first strong evidence that the CIA was indeed engaged in illegal and unethical research on detainees in its custody. The report, the result of six months of detailed work, analyzes now-public documents, including the “torture memos” from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel and the CIA's Inspector General Report and the accompanying CIA Office of Medical Services (OMS) guidelines for monitoring of detainees. The report points to several instances where medical personnel — physicians and psychologists — monitored the detailed administration of torture techniques and the effects upon those being abused. The resultant knowledge was then used both as a legal rationale for the use of the techniques and to refine these abusive techniques, allegedly in order to make them safer. For example, the OMS guidelines contain this note emphasizing how important it is “that every application of the waterboard be thoroughly documented” by medical personnel, and clarifying the nature of this documentation: “how long each application (and the entire procedure) lasted, how much water was applied (realizing that much splashes off), how exactly the water was applied, if a seal was achieved, if the naso- or oropharynx was filled, what sort of volume was expelled, how long was the break between applications, and how the subject looked between each treatment.” This type of documentation was not part of routine medical care as it was not being done in the interests of the person being waterboarded. Rather, the OMS made clear that this was being done “[i]n order to best inform future medical judgments and recommendations” [regarding how to torture people.] The purpose of this systematic monitoring was to modify how these techniques were implemented, that is, to develop generalizable knowledge to be utilized in the future. ‘Eclipse’ Exclusive Scene Turns Up The Jacob/Edward Tension

Bella’s torn between two loves in the parking lot clip that premiered on the MTV Movie Awards. By Larry Carroll Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit It’s been said (rather crassly) that the plotline of “Eclipse” boils down to a young woman’s choice between bestiality and necrophilia. On June 30, “Twilight” fans all over the world will finally be able to feast their eyes on Bella’s struggle to reconcile her feelings for monstrous Jacob and undead Edward. Those watching tonight’s MTV Movie Awards, however, just received an exclusive sneak peek at her indecision — and now, the clip is here to appease your own ravenous, to-die-for appetite. “Charlie said you left town,” Jacob (Taylor Lautner) says, confronting Bella (Kristen Stewart) with Edward (Robert Pattinson) at her side in the Forks High parking lot. “Yeah,” responds Bella, who has her hoodie pulled up over her head. “To visit my mom. Why?” “He’s checking to see if you’re still human,” sneers a defensive Edward. Although lots of big news is bound to be made at the Movie Awards, few moments have garnered as much anticipation as this clip, one of the few full scenes to be released from David Slade’s “Eclipse.” The scene helps set up a plotline involving evil vampire Victoria and gives fans a glimpse of the shifting dynamic between the three leads. “Look, I’m here to warn you,” steams Jacob, clearly taking over the alpha-dog mentality and looking very little like the Jacob of the original “Twilight” film, whom Edward could easily have knocked on his heels. “If your kind come on our land again …” “You should leave,” Edward shoots back. “Now.” “She has a right to know,” responds Jacob, looking noticeably — um — wetter than you might expect. “She is the one the redhead wants.” “I was trying to protect you,” Edward says to Bella. “By lying to me!” she retorts, moments before hopping onto Jacob’s motorcycle and riding off. Fans will undoubtedly spend the next few days breaking the scene down as if they were a Cullen picking apart a deer’s bones. And one aspect that should promote conversation is KStew’s ability to hold the scene and steer it, despite being the physically smallest person in the frame. A lot has been written about Taylor’s increasingly formidable screen presence — but this brief clip reminds us once again why Kristen is the true heart and soul of these films. For good measure, our friends at Summit Entertainment have peppered the end of the scene with a quick montage of action-heavy shots from “Eclipse.” Although the majority have been seen previously in trailers, they never get old: Victoria under attack, newborns emerging from the water, Jackson Rathbone’s Jasper on the attack, Victoria in the tree and a few more clips worth freeze-framing. All in all, it’s enough to make fans look away from the Movie Awards just long enough to ask one simple question: Is it too early to vote for next year’s show? ‘Last Airbender’ Clip Premieres On MTV Movie Awards

Footage, featuring Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone, promises spectacular set-up for M. Night Shyamalan adaptation. By Todd Gilchrist Dev Patel in “The Last Airbender” Photo: Paramount Pictures Last year, M. Night Shyamalan took the helm of “The Last Airbender,” a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s popular animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and a new clip from the film premiered on tonight’s MTV Movie Awards. While it remains to be seen whether the film will feature one of the writer/ director’s trademark twist endings, the footage fans are seeing promises nothing short of a spectacular set-up for an epic franchise. The clip opens with a shot of Katara (Nicola Peltz) and Sokka (“Twilight” star Jackson Rathbone) as they trudge through a snowy landscape. The pair emerges onto a frozen lake where something lurks ominously beneath them in the water below. After Sokka strikes the ice, a ball rises before them and a bolt of energy erupts from the top of it. Although it’s not entirely clear whether the Airbender himself pops out of that big ball of icy energy, as he lands center screen, a disembodied voice tells him, “Airbender, only you have the power to master all of the elements and save us all.” While such an observation would certainly offer anyone else an unwanted amount of pressure, Airbender promptly responds by kicking the tar out of seemingly everyone in his path, using the four elements — air, water, fire and earth — to dispatch adversaries and generally look like a total badass. And when those elements don’t do the job, Airbender’s got a freaking spear just for added measure. Of course, you’ll have to see if Airbender is truly the last of his kind, and perhaps more importantly, if he is the last man standing, when the movie arrives in theaters on July 2. But in the meantime, check out everything MTV has on “The Last Airbender,” as well as a lot of other new movies coming to theaters soon! MTV Movie Awards Should Have Brawls And Nudity, Host Aziz Ansari Says

‘Like Ronnie from ‘Jersey Shore,’ he’s not going to be at the Oscars,’ the host says of limitless comic opportunities. By : Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Tim Kash Aziz Ansari Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News If Aziz Ansari were running the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , some of the highlights from the show would include a fistfight between a Hollywood superstar and a reality show mover-and-shaker, and a certain A-List star whipping out his manhood in front of millions of viewers. Come to think of it, Aziz basically is in charge, as host of this year’s awards show. So, yeah, things could get a bit insane on Sunday, when it airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. You’ll just have to tune in to see what the 27-year-old comedian delivers. As he told MTV News, his wish list is a ridiculous and amazing mix of celeb pranks, brawls and more than a few moments that are definitely not safe for the airwaves. For one nutty example, Aziz is pulling for a throwdown between Johnny Depp and Ronnie from the “Jersey Shore” — and that’s just the sort of thing that makes the show great. “There’s the biggest movie stars in the world and then people that are famous for saying ‘bro’ a lot,” Aziz explained. “I mean, those people are not going to be at other awards shows. Like Ronnie from ‘Jersey Shore,’ he’s not going to be at the Oscars. He’s at the MTV Movie Awards, and he’ll probably do something dumb, like, he’ll go and punch Johnny Depp in the face or something. ‘Yo bro, you were looking at me weird,’ ” he imagined Ronnie saying in the confrontation. “That’s what’s fun about this show.” A lot of the fun last year, of course, centered around Eminem and Br
