What’s the Matter with Massachusetts?

In which a born-and-raised, dyed-in-the-wool Boston liberal (transplanted to New York) tries to make sense of the big old hulking electoral mess that is his home state right now. Whenever my dad, an American history professor at Boston College, mentions the big ancient bad that was Richard Nixon, he always smiles and says “Did I ever tell you that I had a bumper sticker that said ‘Don’t Blame Me, I’m from Massachusetts’?” And, yes, of course he has told me lots of times.

Heroic animals more common than thought, say scientists

Heroic behaviour among animals is far more common than previously thought, according to scientists. Creatures including dolphins, monkeys, fruit bats and even ants are all capable of selflessly coming to the rescue of others, researchers found. Dr Elise Nowbahari, from the University of Paris, said there is mounting evidence that willingness to go to the aid of others at personal risk is common in a range of species and far from a solely human trait.

Some UK Swimathon Bullshit of the Day

I didn’t know people in the UK swam, I thought they were too busy working the mill and sweeping chimneys to find the time to do this shit. I’ve met people from the UK on the beach at various stages in my life and they’ve always been just as afraid of the sun as they were of the water. You know their weird pasty skin covered in full pants, blazer, button down shirt and a sun hat covering an already ridiculous burn on their hands, the only exposed skin, but it turns out that I was wrong
