Nicki Minaj Wants To Get Audience ‘Riled Up’ On Lil Wayne Tour

‘At the end of the day, it’s hip-hop. Let’s not get that misconstrued or anything,’ Pink Friday star says. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj performs during the I Am Music 2011 tour opener in Providence, Rhode Island Wednesday Photo: Getty Images Don’t get it twisted: Nicki Minaj is an MC first and foremost, she says. Forget the theatrics, ’cause when she gets onstage, she wants to pump energy into the crowd. And to do that, she goes back to her roots. “You always want to start the show and get everybody riled up,” she told MTV News during the kickoff to Lil Wayne’s I Am Music II Tour . “At the end of the day, it’s hip-hop. Let’s not get that misconstrued or anything. People see the way I’m dressed and forget what I’m really doing. Why I’m really here is ’cause I write my raps. Why I’m really here is because I’m an MC. Why I’m really here is because I can go toe-to-toe with dudes. So we want to start the show off saying, Yep, this is Nicki Minaj and this is what I do.” And the Pink Friday star certainly does do those things. She arrived onstage Wednesday night with a booming introduction courtesy of the film “Gladiator.” From there, she launched into a spirited rendition of her Lil’ Kim dis track, “Roman’s Revenge.” Later on, she moved on to her pop fare, including “Your Love” and “Right Thru Me.” But the Queens rapper said she wanted to start the proceedings off by reminding everyone of the artist she was when Lil Wayne first discovered her rapping on a DVD. When we spoke to Wayne about signing Minaj, he told us how she developed into an artist who can hold her own. “I can’t front, I just thought she was going to be the new female MC that none of these other female MCs can touch,” Wayne told MTV News about Nicki . “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new attitude and this style. Now when I talk to her, I just tell her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I used to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. I don’t have a clue about what you’re doing right now, but it’s working, do it.” Related Videos Watch Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj And Birdman On This Week’s ‘RapFix Live’ Related Artists Nicki Minaj Lil Wayne

Jennifer Lopez Features Lil Wayne On Next Single

‘I’m Into You’ will be next single off Love? album, which still has no release date. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Steven Tyler isn’t the only “American Idol” judge trying to make the most of a double dose of weekly prime-time exposure on TV’s biggest reality show. While Aerosmith’s back catalog has gotten a boost thanks to its prominent placement on “Idol,” fellow judge Jennifer Lopez has parlayed her spot on the program into the highest-charting single of her career with “On the Floor.” And over the weekend, she revealed that she’s got a strong follow-up single ready to go. Speaking with fans during an online chat , on Saturday, Lopez said she’s finished a song called “I’m Into You” with Lil Wayne that will be the next single from her still unscheduled Love? album. “My next single I believe will be a song called ‘I’m Into You’ and it’s going to feature Lil Wayne, so look out for that,” she said. Asked to name her favorite rapper, Lopez said it used to be Nas, but that these days she’s really feeling Weezy, whom she called a “very unique” and “fresh” voice. “Plus he’s on my single!” And though J.Lo did not have a specific release date to announce for the album, she said it would “probably” come out in late May, once two or three singles have hit radio. That would be perfect timing, of course, since “Idol” wraps in mid-May. Lopez, who has toured sporadically during her music career, also said that she planned to launch a world tour in support of Love? . Over the course of the two years she worked on the new album, Lopez said she also recorded Spanish-language versions of some of the songs, and plans to release a full-length Spanish album next. Asked what the hardest part of being a judge on “Idol” this season has been so far, Lopez said, “I didn’t expect that it would be such an emotional roller coaster for me.” She also admitted that saying goodbye to the departing contestants has been very difficult for her. ‘This is what I’ve been praying for,’ she says. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Kelly Marino Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj is an international star these days, but when Harajuku Barbie went on the road with Lil Wayne for his I Am Music Tour two years ago, her portion of the show was limited. For the sequel, however, the “Moment 4 Life” rapper made it onto the marquee. Minaj will join Rick Ross, Travis Barker and Mixmaster Mike on Lil Wayne’s next outing . “Oh my God, I’m very excited to be touring with Wayne,” Nicki told MTV News. “The last time I toured with Wayne I was onstage for three minutes. Now I have my own set, I have my own lighting, my own costumes, my own dancers, my own everything. And this is what I’ve been praying for [for] a very long time.” She’s certainly come a long way compared to when she first joined Weezy’s Young Money roster. Wayne admitted she was a nice addition, but he didn’t see her becoming as big of a star as she’s become. She, along with Drake, gave him the luxury of relaxing while he was behind bars, knowing his prot

Two new songs from Jean Grae this week?   Maybe we haven’t been paying close enough attention to this underrated female emcee, but we can’t remember hearing much from her after the release of her Jeanius project a couple of years ago, aside from a cameo on Talib Kweli ‘s Gutter Rainbows album. Samples of History: Hip-Hop Mines Afrobeat The Greatest Blaxploitation Soundtracks Of All Time “You Don’t Like It, So What” is the first track leaked from her forthcoming album, Cake or Death .  Of course, the hook is built around a sample of Rob Base’s “It Takes Two.”  Jean spits her clever rhymes with a quirky sense of humor.
