Source: Marla Aufmuth / Getty It’s Black Poetry Day, and today we honor those ingenious men and women who have been brave enough to bare their souls through literature and share it with the world. Why commemorate on October 17th ? According to sources, Jupiter Hammon, the first published black poet in the United States, was born in Long Island, New York, on October 17, 1711. In honor of Hammon’s birth, we celebrate the contributions of all African Americans to the world of poetry. Although he was a slave, Hammon was purportedly allowed access to the manor library and was educated with the estate owner’s children, even working with Henry Lloyd in his business ventures. But he was far from being the only former slave to have a notable writing career. Phyllis Wheatley was also an African slave — however, as her works spread throughout town, she became the abolitionists’ illustrative testimony that blacks could be both artistic and intellectual. Her name was a household word among literate colonists and her achievements a catalyst for the fledgling antislavery movement. Poetry has certainly transformed over the years, especially with the rise of social media and the impact Hip Hop now has on the mainstream. Most people don’t realize that Hip Hop is a form of poetry with a sick beat behind it. Just ask rap’s go-to poet, Wale . The DC native once said of poetry: “The ability to make somebody feel something: that’s art. However you look at it, whether you’re an author, a painter, a singer, a rapper, a spoken-word artist – art. I feel like I’m one of the more creative artists in the game. I think I’m going to be here for a while.” In honor of Black Poetry Day, we’ve highlighted some of our favorite young stars who’ve changed the poetry game for us millennials. Everyone love a generic quote, but these writers always push their pens to give us more — and keep us wanted more. Hit the flip for 5 young, Black poets we all should be following on Instagram.
Source: Splash News What’s going on with the weather, NYC? Welcoming fall is supposed to be a joyous occasion , a gradual introduction to crisp winds and the occasional dip in temperatures—but last week it was 80 degrees and now it’s brick azz. We need answers. New Yorkers have been left feeling—and looking —hella confused, as we try to find the middle ground between staying warm and not looking like straight up winter. These months before the holiday season are supposed to be our time to break out our flyest sweatsuits, constructs, Nike Techs…wash and sets that actually last. But like your boy Lenny Kravitz in the photo up top, we really don’t know what season we’re in. Do we put away all of our summer clothes even though temperatures could shoot up again? Do we take out our winter coats? Is it okay to wear a scarf yet? Or, do we just accept that we might catch a little ‘monia in the days to come? And someone tell us, what’s the consensus on Uggs? Trump, bless his heart, seems to think even though “something” is wrong, it’ll reverse itself. He told 60 Minutes this week, “Something’s changing and it’ll change back again.” Um…WHAT?! While 45 is acting like he couldn’t care less, NYers are super annoyed. This guy, primed for hoodie weather, expressed the disappointment we’ve all been feeling deep down inside: Bruh nyc weather skipped Nike tech weather and went straight to Christmas -_- — (@Detresss) October 13, 2018 While lacking melanin or any sign of Black folks existing in NY, this meme really sums things up neatly: NYC weather is no joke ….. pic.twitter.com/VMJHJw90Go — Shaa. (@QueenShaShaa_) October 17, 2018 Even Ryan Seacrest is fed up. Six days ago he took to the innanets to say what every NY’er has literally been saying all day for the past few weeks: Hot & humid this morning… rain this afternoon… cool temps tomorrow a.m. NYC weather is all 4 seasons in the span of 24 hours. — Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest) October 11, 2018 It’s a lot…especially because we have other things to do that don’t include thinking about what to wear all day—like, figuring out which bae is our best cuddle option for Cuffing Season ’18. As for the rest of this week, it looks like temperature highs will be between 51 and 64 degrees with lows between 39 and 54 degrees. Whatever that means. But the good news is…we probably won’t have to deal with any rain. Hit the flip for more hilarious tweets about NYC weather. Hopefully, it’ll just go ahead and even itself on out like Trump suggested it would…but realistically, we don’t see him being right about anything anytime soon. That, we can predict.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians took Kim and Kourtney to Japan on Sunday night. And the sisters brought with them many suitcases, changes of outfits… and lots of hard feelings. The installment centered on Kim planning a trip to Tokyo to shoot a Yeezy campaign on behalf of her husband’s fashion brand. “I love working with Kanye in that way because he will listen to me on things that are important to me, and I’ll trust him on colors and fabrics,” she said of the endeavor, adding: “I only have a few days to get 20 looks shot. “Japan is the campaign – we can’t recreate it. There are dozens of people working on this, so it is a lot of pressure. “It’s my husband’s collection and I want to make sure that I do a good job and that he likes how everything turns out.” This was the epitome of a First World Problem , but whatever, right? It was a fair concern for Kim at the time, given the circumstances. However, Kim decided to mix the personal with the professional by inviting Khloe and Kourtney along for the vacation. Why would she do so, considering the tension that has existed between all three siblings throughout Season 15? Probably because the script called for it, but maybe also to bury the hatchet. All it took was one evening out, though, for the tension to return — which is what happens when one sister simply can’t handle what her loved one is wearing. “I can’t even eat dinner because I’m so disgusted with my sisters’ crazy outfits that completely don’t go with my look,” Kim told the camera. “Like, I can’t take it.” No, really, she could. Not. Even. Take. It. “My sisters look so crazy,” Kim continued. “It’s actually embarrassing. Kourtney with the Japanese-inspired outfit, and Khloé is wearing silver sequins, turquoise eyeshadow, huge chandelier earrings – they’re just like, completely clashing and making my outfit look really bad and they’re ruining everything. “I need the Yeezy collection to be debuted and not all this crazy distraction in the background.” Seriously, Khloe and Kourtney: How did you not consider the effect your fashion taste would have on Kim’s career?!? Kim didn’t keep her feelings to herself, either. She sat down with her siblings, told them they looked like “f-cking clowns” and continued to berate them as follows: “I’m not kidding. This is not like, a tourist thing where it’s Halloween, dress up like a f-cking Japanese geisha, unless we’re at a geisha house. “I just think you’ve got to like, chill. Like, you can be cooler. I’m not telling you guys who to be and what to wear or anything, but I’m telling you who to be and what to wear. “It could be time for a fashion overhaul, so that you stay young and relevant.” At another point, she told Kourtney she looked “like a f-cking grandma, 100 percent.” After being informed that she doesn’t come across as “special” or “innovative,” Kourtney at last snapped and replied in a confessional: “Now I think Kim’s just being rude, and rude to everyone in glam. “We’re all doing fun looks together and it’s not that serious. I think Kim and I don’t always see eye-to-eye as far of the importance of traveling and living in the moment. … “I have three children and a full-time job. I don’t have seven stylists.” View Slideshow: Keeping Up with the Kardashians: 14 Shocking Secrets Revealed! Kim defended her actions, saying she didn’t have time to “beat around the bush” while on location for a Yeezy campaign, while Kourtney countered that she just wanted to have some “fun.” “Nobody wants to wake up and be criticized from head-to-toe the whole day long,” she sighed, finally lashing out as Kim for real: “Would you rather me f-cking say your f-cking outfits suck? You’re wearing a puffy vest, you have pink hair and turquoise shoes. “I didn’t come here to wear leggings that are see-through and show my ass off. Do you know easy it is to a bitch? I could be a bitch all f-cking day if that’s what you want. “But guess what? It takes a lot more courage to show your feelings than to sit there and be a bitch.” Okay, fine, Kim relented toward the end of the episode. She said she takes pride in being “honest,” but that the “delivery” of her message may have been off. But, hey, it was all worthwhile in the end! “It was a lot of work but we did it, and with how amazing and pretty this city is, this campaign is going to be super dope,” she concluded. “Kanye is so happy with how the shoot turned out and I feel like it was a really good trip for us overall.”
The Walking Dead returned to AMC with a lot of surprises for longtime fans of the series. There was a time jump, two deaths, a proposal, blindsides and a whole lot of zombie action. The episode kicked off with a cute scene between Judith, Rick, and Michonne, showing that Alexandria really did manage to weather the storm. It was rising up thanks to the leadership in Rick, but there was a new mission for him and his allies to work on: They embarked on a trip to Washington D.C. to garner supplies, but these weren’t the usual supplies these zombie slayers usually pick up. These ones would allow them to create transport that would not really on gas. Instead, they would rely on horses and a whole lot of manpower. That’s why the gang made their way to the Museum of Natural History because that was the best place to get some equipment to make carriages for the horses. What followed was a tense scene as the group worked in tandem to get a carriage down a set of stairs and across a large room without making a noise. There were walkers right below them, and what made it even scarier was that it was a glass floor separating them. In a somewhat predictable chain of events, the ceiling gave way, and Ezekiel fell down. Thankfully there was a bit of rope that kept him dangling just long enough for his pals to save him. The first death of the hour came when the group was on the way back with the supplies. Walkers appeared from every direction. Ken did not want to see the horse die, so he quickly tried to slice the shackles to save it, but he gave up his own life in the process. One of the walkers feasted on his arm, and that was the end of him. His mother and father blamed Maggie for taking their son out to find supplies. Gregory was on hand to turn them against Maggie because that’s what the loser does. He always pops up to cause some drama. He successfully managed to get the boy’s father to try and murder Maggie as she was doing a midnight patrol around the Hilltop. Maggie was saved in the nick of time and went straight for Gregory’s place. The villain laughed at the very notion of trying to kill here before attempting to stab her on the spot. Maggie overpowered him and decided to call a town meeting. That involved bringing Rick over from Alexandria. Rick pleaded with Maggie to offer some assistance to the Saviors, but she was against it. If you watch The Walking Dead online , you will recall that she wanted Negan dead, but Rick saved him. Maggie offered a deal to Rick: She will offer food and resources to the Saviors, but they will be the ones to build the bridge and provide most of the labor. Maggie then said that she was supposed to be in control of everything and that Rick was still grating on her nerves. She had a point, and Rick was genuinely blindsided by it. Maggie then executed Gregory, saying that everyone knows there are rules and she will inflict them on people if she so desires. Elsewhere, Daryl was freaking out when someone started writing “We are still Negan” on the walls of the Sanctuary. He confronted Rick about not wanting to work there anymore, but Rick said that someone else would have to take his place. Carol overheard the conversation and agreed to take over from her friend, so he had a break to get it together. We also learned that Carol and Ezekiel’s relationship was going from strength to strength. Ezekial even tried to propose marriage to Carol. She declined, and we’re left to wonder why. J emele Hill and Michael Smith made history at ESPN by being the first all-Black anchor team on “SportsCenter” in February 2017. They both have left ESPN and now Hill has sat down for her first interview since the departure—and she drops some truths about how they were treated at the network. See Also: President Donald Trump’s Voter Fraud Claims Could Lead To More Voter Suppression In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , the 42-year-old says they were labeled political simply because they were Black and way before she made any comments about Trump. Hill explained, “Mike (Smith) and I specifically were called political, way before any of the Trump stuff ever happened and I always thought that was a very interesting label, because frankly, I think that most of the time it was said because we were the two Black people.” She continued, “It wasn’t our fault that Chance the Rapper decided to wear a Colin Kaepernick T-shirt and say that he wasn’t supporting the NFL. We didn’t have him on the show for that. We had him on the show to talk about him being in Vegas for Mayweather-McGregor. But because you have the two Black people that are outspoken, with another outspoken Black artist, suddenly the show is too political.” Thankfully, ESPN is in her rear view mirror because big things have already come her way. She will narrate the LeBron James basketball documentary Shut Up and Dribble , which airs in November on Showtime. She is now a staff writer for The Atlantic and is developing a TV series with Gabrielle Union, which is loosely based on her relationship with her best friend of 20 years. Hill explained to The Hollywood Reporter , “The best way I can describe it, it’s as if Molly and Issa from ‘Insecure’ had grown up. Imagine those two characters as fully-grown, accomplished women of color.” Huge congrats to Jemele Hill! Cole Starts Hurricane Relief Fund Following record-breaking rainfall, flooding rivers, and mass power outages wrought by Hurricane Florence–which made landfall in North Carolina last Friday, September 14– J. Cole has just launched a storm relief fund through his nonprofit, Dreamville Foundation. The foundation is currently soliciting donations on its website and is set to target its relief efforts in Cole’s hometown of Fayetteville, N.C. Mandatory evacuations have impacted thousands of households, who were ordered along the Cape Fear River, which runs through the city and remains in major flood status, according to the National Weather Service. The Fayetteville Observer has reported that three deaths in the city’s surrounding Cumberland County may be attributed to Florence. “The Dreamville Foundation is looking to lend a helping hand to the community, children, and families affected by Hurricane Florence,” reads the announcement from the fund. “There will be hot food stations placed throughout the city, temporary housing options for families, and stocking of food pantries/shelters, as well as supporting other local non profits who help provide services for the people in Fayetteville.” The rapper is currently traveling through North America on his K.O.D. Tour. His first ever Dreamville Festival was scheduled to take place in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina earlier this month, but was cancelled due to safety concerns related to the storm. Before the event was forced to be cancelled, a portion of proceeds from the festival were intended to benefit Cole’s nonprofit. Those who want to contribute to the cause can donate to J. “Just win, baby’’ was the mantra of Al Davis, the late owner of the Oakland Raiders, and it pretty much sums up Tuskegee coach Willie Slater’s sentiment after his Golden Tigers escaped with a hard-fought 24-17 SIAC road win against winless Clark Atlanta Saturday night. The Golden Tigers (2-1) were guilty of enough miscues to cost them the victory. They gave up a safety, lost a pair of fumbles – one on Clark’s goal line and one that was returned for a touchdown – and they committed numerous mental gaffes. “It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it,’’ Slater. “We were our worst enemy, but we kept fighting back.’’ The Golden Tigers spotted Clark an 8-0 lead after the Panthers (0-3) took the opening kickoff and drove 71 yards on nine plays for a touchdown and made a two-point conversion. Quarterback Charles Stafford was 4-for-4 passing for 46 yards on the drive. Clark was aided by a 15-yard personal foul penalty against Tuskegee on third down after the Golden Tigers had denied the Panthers a first down. Tuskegee’s defense regrouped after the first series and didn’t allow any points the rest of the game. “They caught us by surprise with some of the things they were doing,’’ Slater said. “We had to make some adjustments.’’ The Golden Tigers had to adjust their offense as well going into the game. Junior quarterback Ahmad Deramus made his third career start, replacing Jamarcus Ezell. Ezell underwent season-ending shoulder surgery earlier in the after he was injured last week against Albany State. Deramus had an up-and-down performance. He completed 10 of 17 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns. But he also lost a fumble on a first-and-goal play at the Clark one yard line when the Golden Tigers were in position take a two touchdown lead. In addition Deramus was sacked three times. At least twice he was out of the pocket and could have avoided being sack had he thrown the ball away. “He’s our guy,’’ Slater said. “He had some big plays, and he had some bonehead plays. We’ve got to iron out the bonehead plays. He’s a winner. We got to make sure we don’t put him in situations he can’t handle.’’ The Golden Tigers didn’t lead until Deramus came up with on of the big plays Slater referred to. He connected Peyton Ramzy on 55-yard touchdown with 8:16 left in the game. The score gave Tuskegee its first lead of the contest, 24-17, and provided the margin of victory. Earlier Deramus found Javarrius Cheatham for a 42-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the first half that tied the score 10-10. KEY GAMES Jackson State 18, Florida A&M 16 – Special teams rose to the occasion Tallahassee, Fla., as the Tigers claimed an inter-conference victory for their fist win of the season. Christian Jacquemin booted four field goals, and Khalil Johnson blocked a 30-yard Florida A&M attempt with four minutes left in the game that would have given the Rattlers (1-2) the lead. Florida A&M gained 463 total yards – 340 passing – but the Rattlers only put the ball in the end zone twice. Their other points came on a 98-yard point after touchdown return by Terry Jefferson. Jackson State (1-1) forced three fumbles to help keep the Rattlers at bay. Fort Valley State 21, Miles 19 – The Wildcats worked some fourth-quarter magic to pull out an SIAC road win – their first victory of the season – in Birmingham, Ala. Quarterback Slade Jarman found Jaylen Lowder along the right side line with 21 seconds left in the game to give Fort Valley (1-2) the win. The scoring drive consumed 6 minutes, 5 seconds and covered 65 yards. The Wildcats’ first lead came with 7:25 remaining in the fourth quarter when Lorenzo Smothers scored on a six-yard run that put Fort Valley on Top 14-13. Miles (0-3) responded with a five-play, 80-yard that gave the Golden Bears a 19-14 lead after their two-point conversion attempt failed. Bowie State 47, McKendree 41 – The Bulldogs built a 22-point first half lead and coasted to a road victory in Lebanon, Ill. Quarterback Amir Hall threw for 352 yards and pair of touchdowns for the Bulldogs (2-1). Hall completed 41 of his 52 throws. He also ran for 95 yards and two scores. Bowie State led 35-13 at the half. OTHER RESULTS Weather Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc on the Black College Football schedule, causing 11 games to be postponed or cancelled.
