Some Sunday Controversy: David Aldridge Labels NBA All-Star Weekend As The “Black Thanksgiving”

Here’s what CNN writer David Aldridge feels about NBA All-Star Weekend (which caused quite the stir in the sports world) …Via CNN : So, you want to know about Black Thanksgiving? That’s what sports writer Mike Wilbon calls NBA All-Star Weekend. First of all, what you need to know about Wilbon, whom I love, is that he has been known to exaggerate just a touch on occasion. But on this one, he’s on point. For those of us who cover the NBA for a living, like me and Wilbon — now an ESPN yakker and writer, formerly a Washington Post yakker and writer, and my friend –All-Star Weekend is a long four days of work. But for most of the people who descend into town — this year it’s Los Angeles, with its still sparkling Staples Center and the surrounding “L.A. Live” area — it’s an opportunity to go wild (sometimes a little too wild, as happened in Las Vegas a few years ago) and get together. Other folks have Tweetups. Black people have All-Star Weekend, or ASW. It’s a national holiday, sort of. ASW is the only time of the year that people call me. I don’t say that to be maudlin, ’cause most of the time, I don’t want people to call me. (Dirty little secret: I don’t really like talking on the phone.) But they come out of the woodwork this time of year, because NBA players are royalty in Black America, and everyone wants to be near them. The old saying is that ballers want to be rappers, and rappers want to be ballers. That’s really, really true. Basketball is a culture. It isn’t for everyone, though the game is loved by people of all colors. There is a rhythm to it, just as if McCoy Tyner was dribbling a ball instead of playing piano. “Considering that the culture of basketball in a predominantly black league like the NBA is so strongly connected to African American culture, the NBA All-Star weekend has turned into a celebration of African American culture by extension,” says Todd Boyd, professor of critical studies at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. The season begins just as baseball’s ends, when the days grow short and the weather turns windy and cold. The tempo is slow at first, like the beginning strains of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme,” but then, just as with Coltrane, it picks up steam. Rookies like the Clippers’ Blake Griffin find their voice, and their game blossoms, as the calendar turns to a new year. While older, wiser veteran players and teams tinker here and there, not much interested in the daily standings, knowing that the important games come in the spring. They can wait. Does this offend you???

Quotes Of The Day: Chris Rock’s Interview With Esquire Magazine

Chris Rock is always good for spot-on soundbite, or in this case block-quote, but during his sit-down with Esquire he drops more than a few good ones. On Lebron James: CR: I don’t even see what the big story is. SR: Cleveland’s hurting, Chris. CR: Cleveland deserves to hurt. I said that wrong. Deservedly so, hurts. But I’m telling you, weather alone should’ve been cause for panic. SR: He’s got a LOYALTY tattoo. CR: Loyalty to friends. And all his friends are right there. God bless him. SR: They all wanted him to stay. CR: No, they didn’t. They all wanted to go. And by the way, he’s surrounded by six 25-year-old black guys — where do you think they want to be? They want to be in Miami. SR: I know that you’re right. I’m just having a hard time getting over it. CR: It’s the weather, dude. I can’t believe no one’s written that article. If Dwyane Wade played in Milwaukee, LeBron would not be in fucking Milwaukee. On the level ambition of other comics compared to his own: SR: The comics I’ve talked to have varied styles as stand-ups, but the throughline is that it’s the most intense thing they’ve ever done. CR: Yeah. A lot of guys are great, but they don’t want to hit hard. To hit like Tyson up there, that shit is — I just presented some award to Oprah at the Kennedy Center. I probably did four minutes, five minutes. It’s weird — you go up there, it’s like, what’s the guy in Lord of the Rings who puts on the ring and he’s invisible? Then he lets it off and he’s sweating, like it’s so hard to be fucking invisible. It’s hard to hit homers. I try to hit homers. I’m not a singles hitter. I’m swinging like Sheffield every fucking time. As hard as I can. On the the Tea Party: SR: Like many nice Caucasians, I cried the night Barack Obama was elected. It was one of the high points in American history. And all that’s happened since the election is just a shitstorm of hatred. You want to weigh in on that? CR: I actually like it, in the sense that — you got kids? Kids always act up the most before they go to sleep. And when I see the Tea Party and all this stuff, it actually feels like racism’s almost over. Because this is the last — this is the act up before the sleep. They’re going crazy. They’re insane. You want to get rid of them — and the next thing you know, they’re fucking knocked out. And that’s what’s going on in the country right now. Chris Rock is definitely the master of tickling your funny bone, while at the same time making you think. Source

Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Is ‘All Club Bangers,’ Pauly D Says

‘The hands immediately go up when that beat kicks [in],’ the ‘Jersey Shore’ DJ tells MTV News live about ‘Hold It Against Me.’ By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Britney Spears in her “Hold It Against Me” video Photo: Jive Britney’s “Hold It Against Me” has at least one fan fist-pumping: Pauly D. And he’s not alone! MTV News caught up with the “Jersey Shore” DJ via Skype to gauge his reaction to Britney Spears’ hotly anticipated new track, “Hold it Against Me,” and the accompanying video , which premiered Thursday on MTV. He was feeling under the weather during our live “MTV First: Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video Premiere” discussion but kept his appointment: “It’s all good, man,” he said. “I’m a warrior!” Increasingly known for his night job as a DJ, the reality-show star gave a strong endorsement for the track’s club-worthiness. “It’s a major, fist-pumping track,” he said of the reactions the song has gotten when he’s put it on. “The hands immediately go up when that beat kicks [in]. It’s such a hard beat. It’s like ‘ba-ba-ba,’ they’re fist-pumping to that track. It has energy. I love it!” When Pauly is working a room, he’s careful to stay in tune with the vibe of the crowd. A track like Britney’s latest single is exactly the type of song he prefers to keep in his arsenal as a secret weapon. It’s the type of song he’s dubbed a “go-to” track when DJing. “I don’t make any set [lists],” he explained. “I read the crowd. And then if I’m playing something and I’m kind of losing them a little bit, I know if I drop that track, I bring ’em right back!” So how might a great DJ follow up a “go-to” song like “Hold it Against Me”? “You gotta keep that momentum after that track, so I drop my track immediately after that, ‘Beat Dat Beat (It’s Time To),’ ” he offered, in something of a good-natured plug for his own single. Pauly D’s position of privilege as an MTV star and budding DJ has, in addition to the obvious perks, afforded him an opportunity Britney fans would salivate over: the chance to hear much of her forthcoming new album, Femme Fatale, which doesn’t drop until March 29. “Seriously, it’s all full of club bangers,” he revealed. “And I’m so excited about it, because I cannot wait to play ’em in the club. Literally, you can play the majority of that album in the club. I love the way she went to that route.” In a move that displayed his increasing media savvy, Pauly refused to let any song titles slip, but he did reiterate that “they’re all club bangers. They’re a lot like ‘Hold it Against Me.’ [ Femme Fatale is full of] major, major, club-banging tracks.” Do you agree with Pauly’s “club banger” assessment of “Hold It Against Me”? Let us know in the comments! Don’t miss “Jersey Shore,” airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. Jennifer Lopez And Husband Marc LopezAnthony Will Be Distinguished Guests At President Obama’s Superbowl Party

Word on the street is that this Superbowl party is going to be one helluva soiree, what happened to our invite Barry O!?!? The guest list for President Barack Obama’s White House Super Bowl party includes entertainers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as well as elected leaders from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Obama said he’d go to the Super Bowl in Arlington, Texas, if the Bears won the NFC title against the Green Bay Packers. But his team lost and the Packers are taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. A White House spokesman said Thursday that about 100 people have been invited, including White House staff, family and friends and other members of Congress. Among those expected to attend are Attorney General Eric Holder, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Sens. Pat Toomey and Robert Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania and congressman Reid Ribble of Wisconsin. Former Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett were also expected. In a news release, Barrett said he and his 18-year-old son, Tommy, will bring gift baskets made by Milwaukee companies Usinger’s Sausage and Klement’s Sausage. Watching the Packers win the Super Bowl with Obama, whom he called the Bears’ fan in chief, will be “particularly satisfying,” Barrett said. Obama previously said he wouldn’t take sides in the Super Bowl. But he visited Penn State University on Thursday and told a crowd, ”I’ve got some love for the Steelers.” Obama visited Manitowoc, Wis., on Jan. 26 and received several Packers jerseys as gifts, including one signed by Packers cornerback Charles Woodson. Woodson wrote: ”See you at the White House. Go Packers.” Maybe our invite just got lost in the mail due to the weather. Yeah, that’s what happened… Source
