Race Matters: Chase Employees Under Fire For Calling The Cops On The Mayor Of Mount Vernon

Source: Lars Niki / Getty Mount Vernon Mayor Says He Was Racially Profiled By Bank Employees The Mayor of Mount Vernon, New York , Richard Thomas, blasted Chase bank employees this week  for allegedly racially profiling him at a branch in White Plains. Mayor Thomas held a press conference on Monday, April 29, to denounce the actions of JP Morgan Chase workers for calling the police on him a week earlier. According to Thomas, he was at the bank along with his chief of staff and a Mount Vernon Police detective as Thomas sought access to Mount Vernon’s online banking records. “The response by the White Plains Police Department was resolved amicably after one of the responding officers recognized the Mount Vernon Police detective,” press advisor Lou Migliore stated, according to Westchester News 12. “Mayor Thomas believes that race played a role in the Chase employees calling the police. The two staffers who accompanied Mayor Thomas are Black and Hispanic.” The mayor continued to fume during a press conference Monday afternoon and called the bank’s actions unacceptable. “As a mayor and as a young, well-educated black man living during this turbulent time in society where police are being called on black people for going about everyday life, this is unacceptable,” Thomas wrote in a letter to Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. “We’ve seen this happen to two black men at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. We’ve also seen this happen to Oregon Rep. Janelle Bynum while she was campaigning. Now it happened to me.” Thomas also said that he filed a formal complaint with Chase over the incident. “We’ve seen a situation happen where the police are called on people of color, particularly Black people, for no apparent reason,” he continued during the press conference. “And one person said he has a gun, and it was kind of like, ‘What? What?’ Because when we came we announced who we were. We made it clear that the mayor travels with security for security purposes.” A representative from JP Morgan Chase responded to the criticsm and denied that Thomas was racially profiled. The bank countered by saying one of the employees saw a plainclothes detective with a firearm on him but did not know he was a police officer. “Our staff acted appropriately,” responded bank spokesperson Joseph Evangelisti. Thomas denies any claims that he and his staff caused a disturbance and that his detective never brandished his gun.

SMH: Documents Reveal That BART Cops Lied About The Details Of Oscar Grant Shooting & Instigated The Altercation

Source: Mark Boster / Getty New Report Proves Officer Lied About Details Of Oscar Grant Shooting According to CNN , a newly released report reveals even more disturbing details about the murder of Oscar Grant, an unarmed black man who was fatally shot by a police officer more than 10-years ago. On New Year’s Day 2009, 22-year-old Oscar Grant was pulled off a train by Bay Area Rapid Transit(BART) officers who were responding to reports of a fight on public transportation. Grant was struck multiple times and forced to lie face down on the Fruitvale train platform. Moments later, officer Johannes Mehserle shot him in the back. Mehserle claimed the shooting was “unintentional”, and that he meant to draw his taser and not his gun. A jury convicted Mehserle on an involuntary manslaughter charge and he spent roughly seven months behind bars. The incident also resulted in the termination of Anthony Pirone, a former BART officer who was accused of trying to conceal the details surrounding Grant’s murder. Pirone was one of the first officers to encounter Grant at Fruitvale BART Station on the night of the shooting. Witnesses described him as a “crazy cop,” and claimed he had screamed racial slurs at Grant shortly before Mehserle opened fire. Pirone reportedly told authorities he was “fighting for his life” after Grant allegedly kneed him in the groin; however, a bystander’s video of the incident did not support the ex-officer’s claims. “None of this appears to have happened during the video,” investigators wrote in the report. An autopsy report also revealed Grant had suffered a hemorrhage during the incident, after he was kneed in the head—a detail Pirone failed to disclose to authorities. “Pirone used force against Grant as a first resort and even then the use of force … did not appear reasonable, justifiable or excusable,” the report stated. “[Pirone’s] willful and reckless conduct … endangered the safety of the public.” New details from a 144-page report completed by Meyers Nave Law Firm, which led BART’s internal investigation into the shooting, show inconsistencies in the stories. “The reports clearly show that because of the officers not deescalating a situation, but escalating a situation, my son is not here today,” Grant’s mother, Wanda Johnson, KRON4. “The people on the platform, you know, still, 10 years later, having to play that in their minds, over and over and over, unnecessarily.”

Amy and Matt Roloff: How Does Their Relationship Work?!?

Amy Roloff and Matt Roloff work together and live approximately 100 yards away from each other. They see each other almost everyday and are constantly asked about one another. And yet… Amy and Matt are not merely divorced, but they are in very serious relationships with other people and yet still manage to remain amicable and supportive of each other. This prompts an obvious question, right? HOW?!? How do they make this arrangement successful? “We want to remain respectful,” Amy told Access in a recent interview, explaining how they may no longer be husband and wife… but they will always be the parents of four children. “For the sake of our kids. … We did have a long life together … it didn’t work out, we’ve moved on, but for the sake of the kids, you know,” she added. Most of Little People, Big World this season has been centered on a feud between Amy and Matt. The latter seemingly wants to sell the family farm, while the former is far more hesitant. Matt went as far as to say Amy was holding his life hostage on a recent episode, but this obstacle doesn't appear to have affected the former couple's long-term relationship. “We can drive each other crazy, but then we respect each other as well,” Matt told Us Weekly a few days ago, echoing his ex-wife's sentiment. He even said the pair often hang out together…  with  their respective girlfriend (Caryn Chandler) and boyfriend (Chris Marek). “We ran an event just the other day – I was there with Caryn and [she was] there with Chris, and Amy and I and Chris and Caryn all had conversation. There was no tension in the room; it was all very easy.” Easy, perhaps. But also unusual. Amy explained to this same tabloid that the quartet are likely not “going to be best friends,” yet they “can be in the same room” together. Matt, for his part, said he would love to double date with Amy and her boyfriend, but “it hasn’t gotten anywhere” yet. He has, however, put trolls in their place any time they criticize Amy online. He still has her back. The TLC costars — who share twins Jeremy and Zach Roloff, 28, son Jacob Roloff, 22, and daughter Molly Roloff, 25 — got married in 1987 and announced their split in June of 2015 “After 27 years of marriage, it is with great sadness that we have come to the difficult decision to file for divorce,” they said in a statement at the time, concluding: “We are proud of what we have accomplished together.” The duo now reside in separate houses on the same Oregon farm, which they still run as a team. Although it's unclear for how much longer this will be the case. Check out snippets from their recent interview here!

Jena 6 Defendant Theo Shaw Becomes A Lawyer

I t’s been nearly a decade since a group of Black teenagers—known as the “Jena 6”—were excessively charged for the alleged assault of a white teen in Louisiana following several racist incidents that took place within their school. Their case garnered national attention; putting the focus on racist loopholes within the country’s criminal justice system. For Theo Shaw —one of the individuals who was convicted—experiencing injustice first-hand ignited his passion to pursue a career in law. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune , Shaw recently became a lawyer. From 'Jena 6' defendant to a promising career, Theo Shaw is officially a lawyer https://t.co/9KWc9wZHbC — NOLA.com (@NOLAnews) April 27, 2019 He was sworn in by Chief Justice Bernette Johnson at the Louisiana Supreme Court on April 26. For Shaw, the swearing-in ceremony inside the courtroom was a full circle moment. In 2006, he sat in a courtroom along with five other Black teens facing an attempted murder charge that could have put him behind bars for 50 years. Through the power of protest and a strong legal team, the felony charges that the teens faced were lowered to misdemeanor charges and Shaw’s criminal record was expunged. Shaw went on to attend community college, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and studied law at the University of Washington. He’s done work with legal advocacy organizations that include the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Innocence Project New Orleans. During the ceremony, Shaw was surrounded by family, friends, and individuals who were instrumental in fighting for his justice. “Being wrongly arrested and incarcerated as a teenager motivated me to become a lawyer,” Shaw told Because of Them We Can in a statement. “After being caged for nearly seven months, I left that jail with a conviction in my heart to stand and fight with all people at risk of losing their freedom.” He hopes that his story will inspire others to make an effort to change the landscape of the criminal justice system.
