Yup. She's still got it, folks. On Sunday night at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, Janet Jackson was honored with a career achivement tropy. Prior to accepting the ICON award, however, the legendary artist got up on stage for her first performance in nine years, as well as her first performance ever as a mother. ( Jackson gave birth in early 2017 . At the age of 50.) After being introduced by Bruno Mars, Jackson took to the Las Vegas stage in a sparkling gold sweatshirt dress and shiny gold thigh-high shoes. She opened her medley of beloved hits with “Nasty,” as her mother Katherine and other family members, including nephew Prince Michael, smiled from the crowd. Janet then launched into her 1993 song “Throb,” reminding everyone of just how long she's been on the scene and just how many hits are in her catalog. But it wasn't just Jackson's singing and dancing that brought attendees to their feet. It was her sage and beautiful words afterward. Upon accepting her well-earned award, Jackson praised the ongoing #MeToo movement , talking at length about this moment in our culture and in society. “I’m deeply humbled and grateful for this award,” she said, adding: “I believe that for all the challenges… we live a great moment in history. It’s a moment that at long last women have made it clear that we will not be controlled, manipulated or abused. “I stand with those women and those men.” The 52-year-old became black woman to receive this distinction at the Billboard Music Awards. But we can only hope she will not be the last. Previous winners included Cher, Celine Dion, Prince, Jennifer Lopez and Neil Diamond. “Our public discourse is loud and harsh,” continued Janet. “My prayer is that weary of such noise, we will turn back to the source of all calmness, that source is God. “Everything we lack, God has in abundance: compassion, sensitivity, patience and boundless love. “Again I want to thank all of you for this honor and I thank God for giving me the precious energy that lets me live my life as an artist who every day seeks to expand my capacity to love.” Watch both Janet's performance AND her speech below. As you will see in the video that we've included, the spectacular Ariana Grande put on a gorgeous performance at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. It was a bittersweet performance, just two days before the 1-year anniversary of the Manchester Arena Bombing. “No Tears Left To Cry” is Ariana's first single since last year's devastating terrorist attack with an explosive device. Ultimately, 22 lives were lost to the terrorist's bomb. And over 500 innocents were injured. Even those who evaded physical harm, who fled or were ushered out — Ariana's own mother, Joan Grande, reportedly urged dozens of audience-goers to come with her to safety in case there were multiple devices — were victims of the device. And so were the families and loved ones of those who died. Terrorism exacts an appalling toll. This kind of deadly tragedy transforms lives for the worst. But Ariana has been outspoken and adamant that she not allow that kind of creeping evil to snuff out joy or hope, and she will continue to tour. Ariana's performance itself, as you can see for yourself in the video that we have included, was a tasteful blend of optimism and art with somber reminders of the May 22 bombing. At one point, she is lifted up into the air by a rising pillar, but her skillful backup dancers use their umbrella props to give the appearance that she is resting solely on their umbrellas. (We haven't enjoyed a performance featuring umbrellas this much since Tom Holland's lip sync performance in 2017; well done, Ariana) The bee, which is the symbol of Manchester, even makes an appearance during the show. Ariana really knows how to illustrate how to move forward even as you grieve. Ariana seemed to dedicate a lot of time in 2017 to self-care. She was also in a relationship that year, but Ariana and Mac Miller are over . Very appropriate, under the circumstances. She had to recover, just like everyone else. Perhaps more so, as she may have felt a misplaced sense of guilt. In contrast, she was something of a social media ghost during the first few months of 2018. Then, Ariana began to tweet with upside-down letters, hinting that new music would soon be coming. That music came in the form of “No Tears Left To Cry,” a beautiful and powerful stand-alone single that continues to receive acclaim. (We should note that, technically, it's only a stand-alone single for now — it may be part of an EP or a full length album later down the road) Ariana was a natural choice to begin the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. Janet Jackson won the ICON Award and generally owned at the awards show. It's what she deserves. Ed Sheeran won Top Artist. … Okay. Top New Arist went to Khalid. The Billboard Chart Achievement Award went to Camila Cabello. Top Male Artist went to Ed Sheeran. Top Female Artist went to Taylor Swift, which makes sense — she had the best-selling album of 2017. Top Duo/Group went to Imagine Dragons. Top Billboard 200 Artist went to Drake. Top Hot 100 Artist went to Ed Sheeran. These awards are based upon streaming and sales, so don't blame Billboard that his name keeps popping up. Top Social Artist went to BTS. Top R&B Artist went to Bruno Mars. Top Rap Artist went to Kendrick Lamar. Top Country Artist went to Chris Stapleton. Top Rock Artist went to Imagine Dragons, so Sheeran wasn't the only name that kept cropping up. Top Billboard 200 Album was Damn by Kendrick Lamar. As we mentioned, the Top Selling Album was Reputation by Taylor Swift. The Top Hot 100 Song was “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Bieber. “Despacito” was also the top selling song. That makes sense — it was arguably 2017's “song of the summer.”
It’s been two months since Josiah Duggar got engaged to Lauren Swanson , and while there’s been no public talk of wedding specifics, Josiah and Lauren would like the world to know that they’re still very much in love. Lauren turned 21 over the weekend, and Josiah made it clear that he’s more in love with her than ever in a heartfelt Instagram post. “There are not enough words to express what you mean to me and how much I love you!” Josiah wrote alongside the photo above. “You are the best gift God has given to me. Happy Birthday, Lauren!” he added. “I will love and cherish you all the days of your life. -Your man, Si.” Needless to say, fans loved Josiah’s kind words. Josiah and Lauren are currently keeping a tight lid on their wedding plans, but fans expect them to tie the knot sooner rather than later. After all, these two have been moving very quickly since day one of their relationship. Just six weeks after the world learned that Josiah and Lauren were courting , the young couple revealed that they had gotten engaged. The Duggars were just as effusive in their praise for Swanson when they announced the engagement on Facebook: “We are so excited to announce that Josiah and Lauren are officially engaged!” they wrote. “We have known Lauren and her family for a very long time and have seen how she has grown in her knowledge and understanding of the Lord,” the statement continued. “She is a wonderful, caring, compassionate young lady, full of zeal for Christ. We are very thankful for her.” The Duggars went on to state that Josiah and Lauren are eager to tie the knot: ‘We are looking forward to another Duggar wedding soon!” Josiah’s in an unprecedented position, as he’s the first Duggar of his generation to engage in multiple courtships. The vast majority of romantic relationships result in marriage in the Duggars’ community, so Josiah no doubt found it difficult to find someone to confide in after his breakup. Fans were stunned when the 21-year-old abruptly ended his courtship with Marjorie Jackson back in 2015. The couple never made a formal announcement. Instead, Duggar watchers arrived at the conclusion that they had broken up based on the fact that Josiah removed every photo of Marjorie from his Instagram page. It was an unexpected move, but those who know Josiah best say he’ll likely continue to toss out his family’s traditions in favor of doing things his own way. Like his sister Jinger, Josiah is a bit of a rebel , and a source close to the family tells us that he’ll likely “be the next one to bust out.” Sources close to the family say there are concerns that Josiah will reject his family’s belief system once he’s married and out of the house. If you’ve been anywhere near an internet-enabled device in the past 72 hours, then you’re no doubt aware that Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in a unique ceremony at Windsor Castle in London. Harry and Meghan’s nuptials were different from previous royal weddings in a number of important ways. Most were cool and interesting, others … well, not so much. For example, the ceremony incorporated elements of African-American culture in order to honor Meghan’s ethnicity and nationality. That was inarguably awesome. In the other column, you’ll find the almost unbelievably messy drama surrounding Meghan’s family. While it certainly helped set this wedding apart from its predecessors, we’re guessing Harry and Meghan would have been happy to skip over the soap opera BS delivered by her father and her half-siblings. Meghan’s half-brother and half-sister talked a bunch of trash , but that came as no surprise, as those two revealed themselves to be bestselling items at the jerk store several months ago. Much more unexpected was the last-minute turmoil involving Meghan’s father. Thomas Markle skipped the royal wedding , bowing out just days before the ceremony for reasons that still aren’t totally clear. At first, there were reports that Meghan’s dad had suffered a heart attack. Now, however, it doesn’t that that was the case. The more likely explanation seems to be that Thomas was humiliated by the revelation that he’d agreed to be photographed by paparazzi in exchange for a fee. That’s not to say Thomas is without health issues, but it seems that his reasons for skipping the wedding were more varied and complex than initially reported. Weirdly, Thomas was in regular communication with TMZ throughout the build-up to the wedding, and he spoke to the site on Saturday after Meghan and Harry exchanged vows. “My baby looks beautiful and she looks very happy,” he said. “I wish I were there and I wish them all my love and all happiness.” Thomas added that watching the wedding on television was both “emotional and joyful.” We may never know exactly what prompted Thomas to stay home instead of participating in this once-in-a-lifetime event, but remarkably, it seems he and Meghan have remained on good terms. The Billboard Music Awards were Sunday night, and the evening was riddled with powerful performances. Ariana Grande's evocative opening act set the tone for the evening. But Shawn Mendes put on “Youth” as a tribute to the victims and survivors of tragic school shootings. As you can see in the video that we have included, he had help — from fellow singer Khalid, and from surviving students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Shawn Mendes is 19 years old, so he doesn't just have to relate to teenagers — he is one. Though he also performed “In My Blood,” which was much more upbeat and designed to please the crowd, when he and Khalid got up and sang “Youth,” it was a clear tribute to both survivors and victims of school shootings. And many read it as an indictment of the numerous politicians and special interests who are fighting gun reform efforts that could save countless innocent lives. But in case it was not perfectly clear, Mendes had survivors of the Parkland shooting up on stage with him. They weren't there as props — they were singing. These were Marjory Stoneman Douglas choir students. Though surely this particular performance had been planned for a while, the timing was tragically appropriate. Just last week, the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas claimed even more innocent lives. Once again, the murderer was a disaffected young male with a lot of anger … and with access to an AK-47. Some are tentatively hopeful that November's midterm elections will see new politicians in office who are willing to actually take action, as so many countries have done, to prevent these tragedies. Mendes' music isn't going to make that happen, but it can be a rallying cry for the voters who can make that dream a reality. Shawn Mendes has plenty of stans who were in attendance in the audience. Kpop fans were delighted to spot Jungkook bobbing his head and dancing along with “In My Blood.” There was actually a hilarious moment in the audience during that song. Notably, Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello were standing and dancing in the crowd during “in My Blood.” Seated just a couple of rows behind them, Darren Criss used his phone to record himself entertained and pretending to be frustrated by Taylor and Camila obstructing his view. The stars are “just like us” in many ways — they can be moved by each other's music. But they can also get annoyed with each other over it. As you'll see in the video, Hailey Baldwin was also in the audience. Last November, rumors began to swirl that Shawn Mendes and Hailey Baldwin were dating . Reports claimed that they were intensely cozy, and they've gone out and about together. They even attended the MET Gala together. However, Hailey has claimed that the two are merely very good friends. That claim of friendship has done nothing to help Shawn dodge the persistent gay rumors that have followed him for years. Believing that someone is gay or bi and closeted is fine, whether you're correct or not. Calling them out as such on social media is unkind. Sexuality is about as personal as it gets. It was so good of Shawn Mendes to use his platform and the Billboard Music Awards for such a good message. It was also good of Khalid, who is a newer name in the music world and whose name seems to be forgotten by many talking about this performance, to lend his voice and talents to the song. We all hope to see a better tomorrow in which children are safe from death and horror.
