Ellen DeGeneres Signs Internet Sensation Greyson Chance To New Label

Twelve-year-old who covered Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ helps launch Ellen’s eleveneleven. By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. No one’s life is moving faster than that of 12-year-old YouTube sensation Greyson Chance , who has gone from an unknown middle-schooler to a worldwide sensation in just a few weeks thanks to his masterful viral cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” On Wednesday (May 26), “American Idol” judge and talk-show queen Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she’s launching a new record label, eleveneleven, and her first signing will be Chance. According to an announcement from her spokesperson, the musical prodigy from Edmond, Oklahoma will join Ellen on Wednesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” where just a few weeks ago he got props from Gaga herself for his emotional solo piano cover of her hit single. Like his 20 million other fans, DeGeneres spotted Chance on YouTube performing the song at a sixth grade music festival (back when it only had 10,000 views) and then invited him to reprise the performance on her May 13 show, when he got a special call from Gaga. “Greyson … inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven. He is my first artist and we are making a record together,” said DeGeneres in the announcement. Chance will perform one of his original songs, “Broken Hearts,” on Wednesday’s show. The preteen has already secured one of the most high-profile management teams in the music business in Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, and Troy Carter, Gaga’s handler, who have agreed to co-manage the sixth grader. DeGeneres, an avowed music (and dance) fan who started her first year on the “Idol” panel amid questions about her musical expertise, said she will continue to use her daytime talker as a platform to discover new artists for the label. The move comes at a pivotal time, as Wednesday night’s “Idol” finale marks the final appearance by original panelist and lead judge Simon Cowell, whose long tenure as a music executive and label runner will leave the judges’ table lacking someone with that experience. On Wednesday’s show, both Chance and DeGeneres will talk about how quickly the record deal and signing have come about. “I’m so excited to have you back,” the host said in the pretaped interview, according to a transcript released as part of the announcement. “This is moving so fast. When I first met you, I said things are going to change. Now [the hits] are over 30 million views. How are you feeling about it all?” Chance responds, “It’s crazy thinking about 30 million people. It just makes me happy. It really just hasn’t sunken in yet.

Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox Are ‘Thinking’ About Winning ‘Idol’

‘I might hoot and holler or something,’ Crystal says of Wednesday’s finale. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze at the “American Idol” press conference Tuesday Photo: MTV News After 44 episodes, dozens of performances and a countless memorable moments, there’s nothing left but the celebration. On Tuesday, after Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze each powered through three impressive songs for season nine’s final performance episode of “American Idol,” the last pair standing contemplated the end of their incredible ride. “I’m proud of what I’ve done,” DeWyze told a gaggle of reporters during a press conference after the live show. “We both put it out there all season, and I know confidence has been a big thing with me, but I feel pretty good.” DeWyze said that he hadn’t fully contemplated the prospect of winning, though it was something on his mind. “It would be amazing [to win],” he said. “But thinking about winning … we did everything we can up to this point. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about it. The first thing I’m going to do when I go home tonight is think about it. But what can you do? You put everything out there and you hope for the best, which is what I’m going to do.” Bowersox shared a similar sentiment and seemed just as excited to find out who the winner would be as the audience. “I think throughout the season, people have been maybe disappointed in my lack of big reactions to things. I’m just a mellow person,” she said. “But I’m personally interested to see how I react tomorrow. I don’t know. I might hoot and holler or something.” Whether or not Bowersox will hoot and holler in victory or defeat will be decided on Wednesday night, when the results show of the “American Idol” finale airs live at 8 p.m. on Fox. ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Crystal Climbs The Mountain

Lee DeWyze couldn’t reclaim the confidence he’d found last week. By Jim Cantiello Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX Tuesday night’s “American Idol” marked the beginning of the end of season nine, with Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze facing off in a three-round showdown. OK, it was less of a showdown and more of a beatdown, with Bowersox easily handing DeWyze his hat. Although Lee was the favorite going into this week, his newfound confidence must have been left at the door of the Nokia Theatre. (Even the mice at the Nokia Theatre had to have been saying to each other, “What’s this wimp’s problem tonight?”) In round one, each contestant reprised an old “Idol” hit, but the rule was that they were not allowed to sing it as well the second time. (Kidding. Except I’m not.) It turned into a battle of the gibberish, and the la-di-dahs of “The Boxer” lost out to the la-di-dahs of “Me and Bobby McGee” by a nose. Simon Fuller got to pick the songs in round two. DeWyze started R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” strong but got lost in the middle, and Bowersox sang “Black Velvet” with some grit but got lost on the stairs of the set. (Why couldn’t she find her way around Tuesday night? During her entrance from the audience she looked as though she was confused too.) Finally, round three was where Lee and Crystal each debuted what would be their first single should they win. With “Beautiful Day,” DeWyze told America he wants to be the lead singer of a U2 cover band. With “Up to the Mountain,” Crystal told America she wants to be the next American Idol. Will MamaSox’s stellar showing be enough to win her the crown? Will Lee’s triumphant top-three showing be fresh enough in voters’ minds to forgive the fact that he choked this week? Did you think Crystal’s message to Simon was a sweet sendoff or an awkward example of brownnosing? Leave a comment below.
