Eminem’s Recovery Dominates Billboard 200

Miley Cyrus’ Can’t Be Tamed debuts at #3, behind Drake’s Thank Me Later. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Guess who’s back? Eminem is notching his sixth #1 album in a row with Recovery , which sold more than 741,000 copies last week. Those numbers dwarfed the figures for the all of the rest of the top 10 on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, as Slim Shady put up the best first-week numbers since 2008, far surpassing year’s other big debuts (Drake, Lady Antebellum, Sade). Proving once again that despite the album’s early leak, his fans will still come out to support the Detroit MC, Em’s massive haul pushes last week’s #1, Drake ‘s Thank Me Later down to #2. Sales for Drake’s debut cratered by 65 percent to 157,000, but the melodic Young Money MC still passed the gold mark in just two weeks, according to numbers provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Miley Cyrus had a rough landing for her more mature Can’t Be Tamed, which comes in at #3 on sales of 102,000, less than half of what 2008’s Breakout did in its debut week (371,000). And though he still hasn’t reached his goal of snagging a #1 debut on the U.S. charts, metal legend Ozzy Osbourne ‘s latest solo effort, Scream, lands at #4 after moving 81,000 copies. It’s followed at #6 by the chart bow from the Roots ‘ long-in-the-works How I Got Over (51,000). In a relatively slow week on the charts, the rest of the top 10 include: Now 34 (#5, 55,000), Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#7, 44,000), Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#8, 43,000), Sarah McLachlan ‘s Laws of Illusion (#9, 38,000) and the soundtrack to “Eclipse” (#10, 38,000). Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ‘ Mojo crashes down nine spots in week two to #11, as sales dipped by 74 percent to 33,000. After 24 weeks in the top 10, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now has dropped to #12 on sales of 32,000. Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera ‘s Bionic continues to struggle, as the singer’s latest slips out of the top 10 after just three weeks, dropping to #22 as sales trailed off by 54 percent to 18,000. One of Aguilera’s collaborators, singer Sia , debuts at #37 with We Are Born (11,000), while soul mama Macy Gray is right behind at #38 with Sellout (11,000). As the world marked the one-year anniversary of his death, Michael Jackson ‘s Number Ones collection rockets up more than 50 spots to #42 on sales of just under 10,000 (one of several Jackson titles to march back up the charts this week). Guess Which Piece of Crap Armond White Called a ‘Humanist Work of Art’?

NY Press critic Armond White and I have had our differences but not strictly due to his unfailing contrarian streak. The man who last week vilified the roundly beloved Toy Story 3 has this week managed to join the 8 percent of critics willing to stand behind Grown Ups — a film that hangs its hat on the attenuation of fart jokes, peeing in pools and 4-year-olds breastfeeding. But! It’s not that he doesn’t get it. The “humanist” joke is on you , dear reader — all the way down to the Mike Leigh and Jean Renoir comparisons. Seriously.

‘Twilight’ Star Taylor Lautner’s Taste In Music Is ‘So Wild’

‘I am all over the place with my music,’ the actor tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News When actors talk about getting into character or prepping for scenes, Lee Stasberg’s famous “Method” acting — in which performers are instructed to draw upon personal memories and experiences through a series of sense-memory exercises — is often referenced as a popular, classic tool. However, with the advent of pocket-size music players, many seasoned thespians, young and old, have turned to a more modern form of scene-setter: the iPod. When MTV caught up with “Twilight” superstar Taylor Lautner, we wanted to know if he has a preferred method of actor preparation, and if he uses any specific musical stylings help him get into the head of his character, Jacob Black. “[I don’t use music] necessarily to get into character, but my music is so wild,” Lautner said. “One second I’ll be listening to country and then the next I’ll be listening to techno and then R&B,” he said. “It’s ridiculous. I am all over the place with my music.” And what is on his current playlist? “Right now is … I’m really, like, an iTunes guy — whatever is on iTunes I’ll give it a shot,” Lautner admitted. “My all-time favorite band is U2, so I’m always listening to U2 — that’s probably the safest answer, but I like to take risks.” Given the fact that two of his “Twilight” co-stars — Robert Pattinson and Jackson Rathbone — are musicians, giving a shout-out to one of their tunes would have also been safe. But speaking of risks, Lautner did reveal a penchant to play a little dance music by a certain Lady every now and again. “I’ve got some Gaga on my iPod,” he said. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Michael Jackson Guitarist Orianthi Recalls Learning Of His Death

‘Everyone was completely devastated,’ Orianthi tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Michael Jackson Photo: Getty Images One year ago Friday (June 25), Michael Jackson died at age 50, after suffering cardiac arrest in his Los Angeles home. At the time of his death, Jackson was hard at work on his much-discussed This Is It concert series — a planned run of 50 shows at London’s O2 arena — sometimes putting in 20-hour days at rehearsals , which were taking place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Jackson’s old-school work ethic amazed everyone associated with This Is It, from choreographers and lighting directors all the way down to the stagehands. And on the day he died, they were all making their way to Staples for yet another marathon rehearsal session — one that, sadly, would never happen. One of the people on her way to Staples was Australian guitarist Orianthi , who had been tapped by Jackson to appear with him onstage during the show (you can watch footage of the pair rehearsing here ). And, on the one-year anniversary of Jackson’s death, she recalled the day she heard the news that shook the world. “I was actually getting ready for rehearsal. I was getting ready to go there, and I found out. And everyone was completely devastated,” she told MTV News earlier this week. “And I wish he was still with us. It’s just really hard. Actually, this week I was talking to my band about it and how crazy it is that he’s still not with us. And we just had an incredible time working with him, everybody. So I’m going to call everyone that was part of This Is It on the day and just reminisce over the amazing memories that we have.” One year later, the magnitude of Jackson’s death is still rather difficult to fathom. And though he will forever be remembered as a titan in the worlds of music, fashion, dance and popular culture, those who got to know him closely — got to marvel at his professionalism, his dedication and his kindness — also will remember him for something else. “His spirit … he had such spirit,” Orianthi said. “When he walked in the room, he just had this great presence about him and encouraging, really sweet. [He is] definitely very missed.” MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend. Don’t miss the one-hour special “Michael Jackson’s Influence on Music,” airing tonight at 6:30 p.m. on MTV. Creationists Lose Again

http://scottklarr.com/media/atheism/creationistPosterFull.png Some good news from Texas! Yeehaw! The Institute for Creation Research — one of the biggest nonsense-peddlers in the 6000 year history of the world — was handed a nice defeat this week. That link to the National Center for Science Education (the good guys) has all the info you need, but to summarize: the ICR moved from California to Texas. In the previous state, for reasons beyond understanding, they were able to grant Master’s degrees in their graduate school. But Texas didn’t recognize their accreditation, so they filed to get it approved. Not so surprisingly, scientists and educators rose in protest, and in 2008 the Texas Higher Education Coordination Board — the organization that grants accreditation — denied the ICR. The creationists appealed. In the meantime, they also tried to extend their ability to grant degrees temporarily while the lawsuit continued. What happened this week is that the extension as denied. And I mean denied. Check out what the court said: It appears that although the Court has twice required Plaintiff [the ICR] to re-plead and set forth a short and plain statement of the relief requested, Plaintiff is entirely unable to file a complaint which is not overly verbose, disjointed, incoherent, maundering, and full of irrelevant information. That’s not surprising, as that’s the only kind of information the ICR is capable of producing. Not to mention wrong. See the Related Posts links below for lots more on the ICR’s recent follies. As far as I can tell, this defeat means that the ICR is still seeking accreditation, but until and unless it does, it cannot grant degrees in Texas. added by: mindcruzer
