Sidney Lumet, the filmmaker whose sincere, sensitive work with a stunning cross-section of actors and writers yielded some of the most enduring films of the last 50 years, died this morning at his home in New York City. He was 86.
Shades of Jude Law! Audiences this Friday had their choice of unfunny Russell Brand comedies this weekend, but the bulk of them chose to stay with last weekend’s champ, Hop , pushing Arthur to the number two slot. The strong, independent ladies of Hanna and Soul Surfer came in at four and five, respectively, while the dungeons ‘n stoners comedy Your Highness got no higher than number five. Your Friday box office is here.
Despite it being about as fun as a tracheotomy, the Easter Bunny exposé Hop won the top spot this Friday night, sending the wibbley-wobbly timey-wimey Source Code to second place. If only you could crap candy too, Jake! And right behind dear ol’ Jake was the haunted house antics of Insidious , scoring a close number three. Your Friday box office is here.
Everybody loves a good David and Goliath story and boy is this a humdinger of one. In this corner is Zack Snyder, director of big event movies beloved by the Comic Con cognoscenti, helming a movie featuring big explosions, pretty girls in short skirts and elaborate fight scenes, all released in gross-maximizing IMAX and PG-13. In this corner is Diary of a Wimpy Kid , an unassuming kids’ movie rushed into production after the relative success of the first installment. And the Kid just cleaned Snyder’s clock, despite the aforementioned IMAX surcharges and despite a large chunk of Kid ‘s ticket sales coming from discounted child prices. Ladies and gentlemen, your Weekend Receipts are here.
That old reliable duo, Anthony Hopkins and Evil, scored a win again as The Rite topped the Friday box office. Meanwhile, Natalie Portman’s No Strings Attached humpathon notched a respectable second place in its second week of release, and The Mechanic stalled in third place. Your Friday box office is here.
Startin’ here, startin’ now, honey everything’s coming up Portman! While her terrifyingly bi-curious ballerina is still raking in the dough (and the awards), Natalie Portman enjoyed a number one opening, as No Strings Attached came out on top this Friday, bumping down the boys club of The Green Hornet and The Dilemma to numbers two and three, respectively. Your Friday box office is here.
Welcome to the doldrums of January, a cinematic graveyard where, traditionally, studios unceremoniously dump off their DOA films with little fanfare and even fewer expectations. But this year was going to be different; with marquee names like Vince Vaughn, Ron Howard, Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry, the box office could match the talent on display? So, was it? Ehhh…ish. While The Green Hornet managed to open on just barely the side of “okay,” The Dilemma self-destructed at a weak number two. There’s always January 2012 guys!
Marshal Rooster Cogburn finally got his bounty in the form of box office gold as True Grit took the top spot after two weeks in second. Nicolas Cage’s latest camp-a-thon, Season of the Witch came in third and proud Goop-er Gwyneth Paltrow’s Country Strong came in movie-weak at number six. Your weekend receipts are here.

Remember that great feeling after watching Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl for the first time? It was just an eminently enjoyable, breezy action movie with a gonzo performance by Johnny Depp that was unlike any other pirate we’d seen before. And then the sequels came along, and any joy and inventiveness disappeared under the crushing weight of a convoluted storyline and performance-obscuring CGI. But behind the scenes footage from the new Pirates seem to promise a return the zany swashbuckling fun of the first flick,
