Weekend Receipts: Apes Holds Off The Help in Close Battle; Glee Flops

Hail Caesar! Again! Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the top choice for ticket buyers at the multiplex, becoming only third film this summer to lead the box office for two weekends in a row ( Thor and Transformers: Dark of the Moon were the other two). Outside of the strong runner-up showing for The Help , the frame wasn’t as kind to newcomers: Final Destination 5 disappointed, 30 Minutes or Less lived up to diminished expectations and Glee: The 3D Concert Movie couldn’t even crack the top- ten . Your Weekend Receipts are here.

Week in Review: We’ve Had the Time Of Our Lives

Another summer week draws to a close today — and not a bit too soon, after five days worth of catsuit drama, Dirty Dancing remake controversy, stoner-on-Santa Claus violence and Breaking Dawn sex talk. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite stories from the past few days before kicking the weekend off with a Four Loko-related arrest. Just kidding! I think we all learned our lesson from that troublesome Twilight star.

Fast Five Director Justin Lin Already Has 12 Minutes of Fast Six in the Can

Director Justin Lin had no idea how well his supercharged sequel Fast Five would go on to perform back when he was filming it — but he prepped, shot, and cut a 12-minute sequence for a sixth Fast & Furious film (his next upcoming production) just in case: “I already have a 12-minute sequence done. I did it just as an exercise. I had it done before we were finished with Fast Five , actually. So I wanted to do that just to have it there and to be honest with you, I didn’t know if I was going to do a Fast Six . I didn’t know if people were going to embrace Fast Five and we were going to have an opportunity. But I felt like I really wanted to make sure that the last scene, which I had talked to Vin [Diesel] about countless times — I wanted to make sure that was done.” [ Box Office Magazine ]

Who Should Play Andrew Garfield’s Brother Happy in Broadway’s Death of a Salesman Reboot?

One of the grimmest plays of the 20th century, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman , is returning to Broadway with Mike Nichols as director and a star-studded cast next spring: Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman is slated to play the tragic protagonist Willy Loman, Linda Emond will play his wife, and Social Network Perkins doppelganger Andrew Garfield will play Willy’s son Biff, which makes perfect sense because Garfield has the Malkovichian hair flip . That leaves Willy’s other son Happy up for casting. Who should it be?

The Alamo Drafthouse Brings 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy to Texas

Texans! Cancel your plans this weekend, because the Chinese are coming, and they want you to join them. Woah, woah, put down your gun and pick up your six-shooter, cowboy…we meant the fun kind of coming. The only Asian invasion in the Lone Star state this weekend is going to be on its movie screens. That’s right, beloved movie house and general purveyor of baddassdom the Alamo Drafthouse is bringing the Chinese titty flick experience of a lifetime to its South Lamar location, and it opens this Friday. We’ve reported on 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy before here at Skin Central, but here’s a recap for those who don’t know: 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is a Hong-Kong produced softcore flick which (rather dubiously) bills itself as “The World’s First 3D Porn”. It’s a (literally) high-flying combination of late-night Cinemax and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , and it outgrossed Avatar in Hong Kong, proving especially popular with curious lady folk. If that’s not enough to pique your skinterest, check out the Alamo’s disclaimer: This film is not rated, but is equivalent to a NC-17 rating. The sex is softcore but there is a ton of nudity. Sold! There are no wider US release dates scheduled for 3D Sex and Zen : Extreme Ecstasy ,making this opportunity to ogle jiggly 3D boobs all the more precious. Austin residents can buy their tickets on the Alamo Drafthouse website , and Mr. Skin members can get a sneak peek of what to sexpect with the original Sex and Zen (1991) right here at MrSkin.com!

Learn About the Hungry Homonculi in Two New Clips from Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Troy Nixey’s upcoming film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark shares elements in common with producer Guillermo del Toro ‘s Pan’s Labyrinth — the little girl heroine, the gothic old mansion, a world of fantastical creatures with sinister secrets — but its supernatural antagonists are tinier, scarier, and way more desperate for you to come “play” with them. Find out more about the goblin-like “homunculi” that live in the basement in two new clips from the upcoming horror-fantasy.
