Weekend Receipts: Cars 2 Smokes the Competition

“Move, b****, get out the way!” said Cars 2 to Green Lantern as the Pixar sequel burned rubber over all over the competition this weekend. Hey, if Mater and Lightning McQueen can eat sushi and have car doors and live in a world with sidewalks but no humans with no discernable method of procreation in place , Cars 2 can speak in the parlance of Ludacris in my head. Especially when it defies everyone – skeptics, haters, that 34 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating — to rake in $68M in its opening weekend. Let’s review the weekend receipts!

In one of the most bizarre red cards in soccer history, an amateur soccer player in Australia earned himself a red card at the weekend for refusing to remove an intimate piercing. Aaron Eccleston, playing for Old Hill Wanderers against Swinburne University reserves, saw red for the offense in the first-half of the Sunday League match in Melbourne. On the Ice Director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean Examines Tradition vs. Hip-Hop Culture in Alaska

Writer-director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean makes his feature debut with the L.A. Film Fest entry On the Ice , a character tale about two Alaskan teenagers wrestling with guilt after the accidental murder of a friend. With its isolated setting, cast of non-actors, and rollercoaster ride of a Sundance premiere, the indie drama isn’t the easiest sell for mainstream America, but it’s a film that deserves to find an audience — a window into a generation of Alaskan teens balancing native culture with hip-hop, at a unique crossroads between community traditions and the volatile influence of urban culture.

Watch the New Trailer for Flypaper: Heist’s Anatomy

Sundance entry Flypaper combines a bunch of people and things we like: Patrick Dempsey, bank heists, the writers of The Hangover , Jeffrey Tambor, one-liners, Rob Huebel, Ashley Judd, a director of The Lion King , and ‘splosions. Seems like a cohesive, yet unexpected marriage of talents. In the trailer from the film — which premieres on demand July 15 before hitting theaters Aug. 19 — we watch a robbery unfold and an unexpected camaraderie arise. I’m already calling Dempsey’s character McStealy.

Did you spend long nights tossing and turning in bed after seeing Pixar’s 2006 animated feature film Cars — asking yourself answer-less questions like, “Why are there sidewalks in a film world where humans don’t exist?” Or, “Where do baby cars come from?” Was your mind blown when you heard that this weekend’s Cars 2 introduces dinosaurs into its 21st century carscape? If so, you are not alone. Box Office Magazine was also troubled by these existential Cars queries and sat down with Pixar head John Lasseter to get some answers.

The Urban Daily sports blogger Jamiyl Samuels aims to show Black fathers in a positive light with his upcoming book. “Pass The Torch: How A Young Black Father Challenges the ‘Deadbeat Dad’ Stereotype” tackles the hot-button issue of fatherhood in the Black community and the affect the lack of a father figure has on young Black males. Disturbed by the negative and stereotypical portrayal of young Black fathers in the media, Samuels speaks from his own personal experiences growing up without a father and draws a parallel to the equally criticized world of Hip Hop whose artists mostly came from broken homes, but rose from their rough upbringing to break the cycle of abandonment with their own children.  “Pass The Torch” praises Black fathers who do right by their children and offers a fresh perspective on a controversial issue. “Pass The Torch” will be released through Samuels’ own  W.R.E.a.C Havoc Publishing imprint via Createspace.com and Amazon.com in the near future.
