Wanda Sykes Talks Breast Cancer, Double Mastectomy

Appearing on Ellen this week, Wanda Sykes opened up about a deeply personal, scary experience from earlier this year: the comedian was diagnosed with breast cancer. She visited a doctor in February to undergo a breast reduction and, following a bit of lab work, was told she had ductal carcinoma in situ her left chest. “I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer,” Sykes said. Sykes was given a choice: Undergo a mammogram and MRI every three months to check on the disease – or have a bilateral mastectomy. She chose the latter because she now possesses “zero chance of having breast cancer,” and also, the actress joked, because: “I’m not good at keeping on top of stuff. I’m sure I’m overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already.” Sykes is the mother of two-year old twins with her partner and said she wasn’t sure about telling the world about her ordeal. “I was like, I don’t know, should I talk about it or what? How many things could I have? I’m black, then Lesbian. I can’t be the poster child for everything. “At least with the LGBT issues we get a parade, we get a float, it’s a party. I was real hesitant about doing this, because I hate walking. I got a lot of [cancer] walks coming up.” LOL. We’re very glad to hear that Wanda will be okay.

Kirstie Alley: Cougar on the Prowl?

As the Kirstie Alley weight loss pics we showed you yesterday made abundantly clear, she’s looking pretty darn good for 60. Losing 100 pounds? Impressive. She’s looking to gain a man, she says, but don’t call her a cougar. That implies she’s on the prowl for no-regrets boning, which she’s not. She wants more. “The easiest thing on this planet is to [find sex], but I don’t see the merit,” says Alley . “What I’m looking for is someone who is madly in love with me, for me.” Twice divorced, Alley isn’t pointing fingers at anyone for past mistakes. “I think when you get into the mind-set of, ‘Oh, this guy did this to me’, you aren’t taking responsibility,” says last season’s Dancing With the Stars runner-up. Adds the actress, who has two girls, True and Lillie, with her second husband, actor Parker Stevenson, “In the final hour, it’s actually what you did to you.” “I wasn’t looking for the right thing before. … I want someone who has my back. And if I’m being attacked, they fricking attack back. Now, that’s bravery.” Here’s hoping she finds it. [Photo: WENN.com]

Chaz Bono Losing Weight, Working Out Like a Madman For Dancing With the Stars

Chaz Bono has said that the considerable backlash against him joining Dancing With the Stars this season only motivates him to work harder. Apparently so. He’s lost five pounds just six days of rehearsals. People reports that Bono is being whipped into shape by his partner, 23-year-old former So You Think You Can Dance finalist Lacey Schwimmer . Bono’s weight loss is a result of adding dancing into his regular routine, and is not a result of any dietary changes – but he still diets ardently. Bono has reportedly been adamant that some of the junk food on the show’s rehearsal sets – courtesy of producers – could be thwarting his diet. Chips, candy, granola and protein bars? Not gonna cut it. He has already made some very specific food requests in an effort to get into top shape. He may not have the dance background (according to mom Cher ) but it sounds like Bono is determined to put every ounce of effort into this. Chaz on Dancing With the Stars: What’s your take?

Genes May Affect Weight Gain

View post:

A new study indicates that genes may explain about fifty percent of weight gain that begins in middle age. Researchers studied sets of twins who served in the military during the Vietnam War. Some of the twins were identical and shared the same genes, and the others were non-identical twins. After twenty years of follow-up, the study now shows that genes account for about 1/2 of the weight gain among the men. Environmental factors, such as exercise and diet account for the other 1/2. Researchers say the findings may help explain why some people find it hard to lose weight. I Don’t Have Time To Exercise! Your genes and how they effect your weightA new study indicates that genes may explain about fifty percent of weight gain that begins in middle age.  Researchers studied sets of twins who served in the military during the Vietnam War. Some of the twins were identical and shared the same genes, and the others were non-identical twins. After twenty years of follow-up, the study now shows that genes account for about 1/2 of the weight gain among the men. Environmental factors, such as exercise and diet account for the other 1/2.Researchers say the findings may help explain why some people find it hard to lose weight. “We’re not acknowledging the strength of genetic factors in our weight loss strategies,” says James C. Romeis, PhD, professor of health services research at Saint Louis University School of Public Health, in a news release. “You’ve got this genetic thing working against you that helps to explain why you’re so heavy and why you may fail at weight loss programs and diets.” Cancer Patients Must Exercise To Prevent Recurrence In the study, which appeared in a recent issue of the journal Twin Research, researchers studied nearly 8,000 middle-aged, middle-class male twins who enlisted in the U.S. military during the late 1960s.At the time of their enlistment as young men more than 3/4s of them were considered normal weight, 17 percent were overweight, and 2.5 percent were obese or severely obese. Twenty years later, less than half of the men were still considered normal weight. Meanwhile, more than half had become overweight. The study showed that about 50 percent of the weight differences among the men appeared to be caused by genetic factors. Other aspects of their lifestyle and environment accounted for the rest. Although genetics may help to explain why some men gain weight more easily and have a harder time losing it, researchers say it should not stop them from trying to maintain a healthy weight, because weight gain doesn’t just happen overnight.
