Avengers’ Hulk: Hardest Character To Adapt To Film?

In ‘Talk Nerdy,’ experts agree with Joss Whedon’s claim that Hulk is the most difficult Avenger to get right. By Josh Wigler The Hulk in “Marvel’s The Avengers” Photo: Marvel Studios Bruce Banner has a tendency to get angry. And despite what he says, you really should like him when he gets angry — because if you don’t, well, you’re going to have a lot of problems with ” The Avengers .” Joss Whedon, the man bringing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the big screen, confessed in a recent interview that Banner’s irritable alter ego, the Hulk, is easily the most challenging Avenger to get right. He might not be wrong, considering that it’s taken three different actors to play the big green meanie on the big screen — Eric Bana in 2003’s “Hulk,” Ed Norton in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” and, soon, Mark Ruffalo in “The Avengers.” And Whedon’s assertion certainly has the support of some of the Web’s top comic book and movie commentators. “Without a doubt, I think Hulk is the hardest ‘Avengers’ character to translate to the big screen,” MTV Geek ‘s Valerie Gallaher told MTV News about her “Avengers” character concerns. “Using CGI to create a character in a live-action film will end up looking like one big cartoon if not done right.” “Both Joss Whedon and Mark Ruffalo have a lot of pressure to give Bruce Banner and the Hulk two distinctive yet relatable characters,” agreed Steve Sunu of Comic Book Resources . “Only time will tell if ‘The Avengers’ is an improvement for Hulk over ‘The Incredible Hulk.’ ” Of course, just because a challenge exists doesn’t mean it’s insurmountable. NextMovie ‘s Kevin Polowy, who also agrees that Hulk presents Whedon’s biggest challenge, has faith in the director’s ability to do the Jade Giant justice. “I do have faith that if anyone can get it done, it’s Joss Whedon,” he said. “But compared to proven screen figures like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, Hulk is far and away the trickiest pony in the bunch.” Not everyone is so concerned about Hulk. Caleb Goellner with Comics Alliance doesn’t see the incredible menace as the most problematic character in “The Avengers”; like me, he assigns that role to the not-super-deadly duo of Black Widow and Hawkeye. “They’re going to be the hardest to portray,” he said. “Black Widow got some exposure in ‘Iron Man 2’ and Hawkeye was teased in ‘Thor,’ but the ‘master assassins’ are at a disadvantage compared to Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Hulk. Their backstories will require considerable streamlining for them to make sense in this Marvel movieverse, so it will be interesting to see how much Joss Whedon and company will be able to fit in to an already packed movie. “I suggest making them husband and wife, because that would be the cutest damn thing,” Goellner added. Totally agreed, Caleb. Which Avengers are you most worried about? Watch Talk Nerdy to see what we think, and let us know what you think in the comments section! SXSW 2012: Top 5 Celebs To Spot

South by Southwest festival will bring Jay-Z, Joss Whedon, Matthew McConaughey and Seth MacFarlane to Austin, Texas. By Kara Warner Jay-Z Photo: FilmMagic Whether wandering past the vast amount of watering holes on 6th Street, catching a screening at the Alamo Drafthouse, or lining up for world-class BBQ at Iron Works or Tex-Mex at Guero’s Taco Bar, this year’s South by Southwest attendees are bound to bump elbows with a celebrity or two who are also in town for the annual Austin, Texas, film, music and interactive-arts festival. Our picks for five celebrities scheduled to attend SXSW and worth bumping into: The Geek God: Joss Whedon We’ve already mentioned our excitement for the world premiere of Whedon’s long-delayed but much-buzzed-about horror film “Cabin in the Woods,” and in addition to his promotional duties for the film — which he co-wrote with director Drew Goddard — Whedon will be appearing at the Austin Convention Center for “A Conversation With Joss Whedon” at 11 a.m. Saturday, which will encompass his beloved past, present and future. Look for the jolly ginger to be doing the “crazy legs” at an impromptu dance party or having animated conversations with fans. King of Cartoons: Seth MacFarlane The multitalented man behind “Family Guy” and “American Dad” will also be featured at the festival in a fancy Q&A setting via “A Conversation With Seth MacFarlane,” 11 a.m. Sunday at the Vimeo Theater, during which he’ll discuss his animation domination, recent foray into music and his anticipated upcoming directorial debut, “Ted,” a live-action/CG-animated comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. Surprise Music Superstar: Jay-Z Because SXSW originated as a music festival, it’s no surprise that a few of the biggest names in the industry descend upon the fest each year, but 2012 marks the first-ever solo appearance by superstar Jay-Z . After bringing down the house with his brief set as part of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music show last year, Jay-Z announced he’ll be playing his first solo set at SXSW on Monday, “Amex Sync Show Presenting Jay-Z,” which will be live-streamed on YouTube . Locally Grown Treasures: Matthew McConaughey and Robert Rodriguez Alright, alright, alright — Texas golden boy Matthew McConaughey will be rolling through for the premiere of his action-packed, slightly deranged and extremely violent NC-17-rated film “Killer Joe” on Saturday evening. We hope he sticks around long enough for some BBQ and beer with the locals. Robert Rodriguez, who has previously attended the fest to promote his feature-film projects, will be on hand for a night of Latin-fused rock and roll by Chingon & Tito and Tarantula . Their music has been featured on the soundtracks of Rodriquez’s films “Desperado,” “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “Machete.” Random but Awesome: tie — Morgan Spurlock and Epic Meal Time Award-winning documentarian and master of making us think, Morgan Spurlock will be on hand for the screening of “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” and as part of the panel “Changing the Channel: The New Golden Age of TV” at 3:30 p.m. Monday, where he will discuss the upcoming second season of his Hulu series “A Day in the Life.” Also noteworthy in a completely different capacity are the crew from Internet phenomenon Epic Meal Time. The masters of outrageous menu items will appear at their Saturday afternoon panel “Meat is Might: Epic Meal Time Rules the Web” and will likely make an appearance at the official SXSW screening of their show at the Alamo Drafthouse on Sunday. ‘Avengers’ Producer Jon Favreau Reveals His Marvel Role

‘My involvement is just to be as supportive as I can be,’ former ‘Iron Man’ director tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Jon Favreau Photo: MTV News When Jon Favreau bowed out of the “Iron Man” franchise in December, the filmmaker made clear he remained on good terms with Marvel execs and that he’d stay within the studio family as an executive producer on the upcoming superhero all-star flick, “The Avengers.” But with Favreau busy with directorial duties on the alien-Western hybrid “Cowboys & Aliens” and prep work on “Magic Kingdom,” his Disney World-set family picture, it remained to be seen how involved he’d be with “Avengers,” which kicked off filming in April. Now, as the “Avengers” teaser trailer has leaked (after appearing in the post-credits sequence of “Captain America”) and fans have gotten their first look at what director Joss Whedon has done with that collection of superheroes, we’re also getting an idea of Favreau’s role in the action. “My involvement is just to be as supportive as I can be. Most of the cast is people that came onboard to work with me on the ‘Iron Man’ film, so I feel a sense of responsibility to them. I really hope it works out,” Favreau told MTV News while promoting “Cowboys & Aliens.” “I’m not in the trenches with them and I’m not making creative decisions on their behalf, but I’m completely available and of service.” That’s a far cry from how fans might have thought things would play out back in 2008, when Favreau said he’d be open to directing “Avengers.” But in October 2009, MTV News broke the news he wouldn’t be helming the film, and after “Iron Man 2” hit theaters last year, he ceded directorial duties on that franchise to Shane Black . These days, Favreau said Whedon is a far better choice to direct “Avengers” than he ever would be. “They have Joss Whedon, who’s a very talented guy and is really good with ensembles and really understands the superhero genre better than I do,” Favreau explained. “I understand ‘Iron Man’ very, very well, especially the ‘Iron Man’ movie and the cast and the characters all built to one thing. But there are other characters that I don’t know. Each filmmaker had a different approach to how they went about it — ‘Captain America’ is coming out, ‘Thor.’ The combining of all those things is going to be its own thing in and of itself that Joss has embraced and wrote the script. I expect big things.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Which Joss Whedon Characters Resemble Members of The Avengers?

The more I mull it over, the more Joss Whedon makes sense as the director of Marvel’s high-profile feature film adaptation of The Avengers . His time in the director’s chair isn’t extensive, but neither was Jon Favreau’s before helming Iron Man , and Whedon’s got plenty more geek cred and comic book experience than Favreau ever did. In fact, once you start to really examine Whedon’s television work, you might see that his characters aren’t so dissimilar from the superheroes who will be populating The Avengers . Let’s take a look at who resembles who:
