THG Asks: Does Miley Cyrus Deserve Criticism Over the Bong Video?

Welcome to THG’s new feature, in which two of our celebrity gossip experts debate topical issues in the entertainment world and you decide who wrote the winning argument! Today, THG Asks : Does Miley Cyrus deserve the criticism over her infamous bong video? YES by Hilton Hater Legality does not equate to morality. At age 18 and partying in California, no one can argue that Miley Cyrus wasn’t within her rights to smoke salvia out of a bong . But is that the only criteria by which we judge celebrities, whether or not they can get arrested for an act? Miley isn’t stupid. She’s aware that cameras follow her around and that her fans are mostly young girls. In exchange for the popularity and money she’s earned in her career, is it really too much to ask to refrain from harmful acts in public? The law isn’t the issue here. It’s the impression Cyrus gives off. Heck, she could star in an adult film tomorrow and police couldn’t do a thing. But would supporters back this decision, as well, simply because Miley isn’t violating any laws? Miley Cyrus Bong Video NO by Free Britney

‘It Got Real Up in That Memory Cave’: Community Recapped

There was a bit of debate between critics on Twitter after last night’s Community about whether or not comedy series should be judged on the amount of laughs they draws from viewers. In short: Yes, they should, but that doesn’t mean a comedy always has to LOL z-funny to succeed. Coming on the heels of “Mixology Certification,” it looks like Community is finally learning that lesson.

Inside Look at a Top Automaker’s Electric Strategy

Photos: Brian Merchant What’s in an EV Strategy? Electric cars are the future of personal mobility — right? Even top execs of major automakers wearily acknowledge that petroleum won’t be the dominant fuel source forever. So most publicly point to electric cars as the next step in the future of automobiles — many say the question is when they’ll enter the market en masse, not whether or not they will. As a result, just about every major automaker has an EV in the works — and a corresponding marketing depart… Read the full story on TreeHugger

If Octopuses Are Self-Aware, Are You Less Likely To Eat Them?

Photo via Brian Gratwicke Does the intelligence of an animal factor in on your decision whether or not to eat them? Many people consider pigs to be incredibly intelligent, but they’re still mostly factory farmed in often abhorrent conditions. Scientists are pushing for dolphins and other cetaceans to have non-human person status, complete with inalienable rights. But they’re still hunted every year as a fish stock, as the documentary The Cove has highlighted. And what about cephalopods, a.k.a. octopuses and squid, which are known to be highly intelligent — so… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Help Find an Oscar-Winner With Movieline’s Exclusive Jean-Luc Godard ‘Missing’ Poster

So if you bet “yes” in yesterday’s poll of whether or not Jean-Luc Godard would personally accept his honorary Oscar at this fall’s Governors Awards, things aren’t looking good for you. A report late Wednesday notes that the Academy has yet to even find Godard to notify him — let alone invite the 79-year-old French New Wave legend to collect his winnings in person in Los Angeles. Godard’s absence persists as of this writing, a development that requires significant measures. Click through to join the hunt with Movieline’s official “missing” poster.

Jon Stewart: Watching Fox News Funds ‘Terror Mosque’

During a recent Fox and Friends segment surrounding the Islamic cultural center/mosque that is proposed for Lower Manhattan, guest analyst Dan Senor pointed out that Imam Rauf had previously received funds from a Saudi organization that is alleged to also “fund radical madrassas all over the world” and is headed up Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. Jon Stewart used that clip to then reveal that bin Talal just so happens to also be a large partner News Corp. business partner, or in his words, “The terror funder is Rupert Murdoch’s News Corps’ funder!” When future trumped up media controversies (like the Park 51 story) reveal themselves, the nation should first looks to Jon Stewart for reason, context and common sense. For no one can more clearly point out the many inherent absurdities in alleged fake controversy surrounding the “Terror Mosque” as Stewart chose to call it. The crux of Stewart’s clip is best summed up by the following rough transcript of the central thesis: That’s right – the guy they are paying as a sinister money force, owns part of Fox News. Let’s do as Fox News commands and follow the money:This is the proposed ‘terror mosque.’ We know that it’s a ‘terror mosque’ because the money may be coming from a bad guy, who definitely owns part of Fox News. Now we know he is a bad guy because we just heard it on Fox News. And by hearing it on Fox News watching Fox News, I’m increasing their viewership and their advertising rates go up. Now, part of that money goes to the bad guy we learned about on Fox, because he’s their part owner, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, allowing him then to make it rain, so to speak, on the terror mosque. My point is this: if we want to cut of funding to the terror mosque we must, together as a nation, stop watching Fox. It’s the only way. Using their reasoning, its the only way to cut off the revenue stream to these bad dudes. Stewart then points out that the most curious part of this entire report was that Fox and Friends never revealed who the evil money source was to the viewers of the show. He then had on correspondents Wyatt Cenac (representing Team Evil) and John Oliver (representing Team Stupid) to debate whether or not, well, the producers at Fox and Friends were being stupid or evil. Will Demi Lovato Be On Selena Gomez’s Album? Demi Dishes

Rumors have been circulating that the two Disney stars would work together on Gomez’s A Year Without Rain. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato at the “Camp Rock 2” premiere Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage With so much talk that Selena Gomez’s fellow Disney princess “Sonny With a Chance” star Demi Lovato may make an appearance on her forthcoming album, A Year Without Rain , fans of both the “Wizards of Waverly Place” star and the “Camp Rock 2” star may have been hoping that the two songstresses would get together for some funky pop-music collaboration. So when MTV News caught up with Demi Lovato on Wednesday night at the “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” premiere in New York City, we wanted to know if there was any truth to those rumors. “No! It’s not true,” Lovato shared about the album, which is also said to have songs featuring Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. “I think she’s already finished with her album.” However, she didn’t totally rule out ever working with Gomez, especially given that she’s hard at work on her own album. “I don’t know,” she said about a possible collaboration. Whether or not a Gomez-Lovato partnership does ever happen, she’s still focused on her wish list of having Drake and Trey Songz on her new record. And she’s looking forward to using her big voice on the R&B-influenced album . “It’s really nice to embrace it,” she said. “I grew up singing R&B and then I grew up listening to rock, so it was kind of weird. But I’m kind of learning how to incorporate the two and I’m having a good time with it. … I can put my vocal stylings on songs that are R&B and it showcases my vocals more than just singing really loud on a rock song.” Would you like to hear Selena and Demi on a track together? T.I. Says Song With Lady Gaga May Not Be ‘A Keeper’

Gaga claims collaboration could be worked into something even better, says Tip. By James Montgomery T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ Getty Images Earlier this year, T.I. had jaws dropping when he announced that he’d recorded some 80 songs for his upcoming album King Uncaged , and that at least one of them was a collaboration with Lady Gaga . “[She’s a] phenomenal talent. Extremely proud [to work with her]. She’s definitely that good. She knows what she’s doing. She knows exactly what she wants people to think and say,” Tip said of Gaga. “She does everything that she needs to be done to ensure it happens. I think she’s an entertainer, in all aspects of the word … a classic, all-around entertainer. A global star.” A few months later, he continued to heap praise on LG , calling her “a phenomenal talent … that transcends through all genres, all races, all religions.” But while T.I. was clearly enthused about the collaboration, he also stopped short of saying whether or not his song with Gaga would actually end up on Uncaged , joking, “I’m not gonna let no cats out of no bags.” And now, we know the reason why. In a new interview with Rap-Up.com , TIP revealed that the song would more than likely be re-worked … or scrapped entirely. Why? Gaga insisted that she could make something even better. “[Gaga] brought it to my knowledge that she would like to top what we already have,” he said. “That being said, I don’t know if that’s going to be a keeper or if that’s going to be one-upped or what not.” So at the moment, the fate of the collaboration seems to be up in the air. But T.I. doesn’t seem to be all that upset … after all, he was thrilled just to work with the Mother Monster on a track. “I begged on hands and knees [to work with her], ‘Please!'” he joked. “I worked with the producer RedOne and made it known that I was interested in working with her, and the enthusiasm was shared, and we were able to get it done.” Related Artists T.I. Is James Franco Joining The ‘Twilight’ Cast?

Actor shows up for Esquire interview holding Stephenie Meyer book, saying, ‘It’s for a project.’ By Eric Ditzian James Franco Photo: Getty Images What’s fun about James Franco is that you never know what to expect from him. He might pop up in some self-deprecating Funny or Die videos, or play a pillow-obsessed weirdo on “30 Rock,” or appear as a serial killer on “General Hospital.” Heck, the guy is starring in the latest reworking of the “Planet of the Apes” franchise . He keeps you guessing. So what are we to make of this new Esquire interview, in which Franco hints he’s getting involved with “Twilight”? When the interviewer first meets the 32-year-old actor, he’s cradling a paperback that he reluctantly admits is the first volume in Stephenie Meyer’s vampire series, saying, “It’s for a project.” Does that mean he could be joining the cast of “Breaking Dawn,” which is set to begin filming in the fall? Or is this mysterious project just about vampires or teenage drama? A rep for Franco did not return MTV News’ request for comment by press time. All we can say for certain, at this point, is that Franco is a fan of the book. “It’s crazy how much sexual tension there is,” he said. “It just builds and builds. I mean it never stops. It’s sort of explosive by the end. Crazy. Like they’ll blow up with it. And of course, they don’t. Which is the point too, I guess.” Franco did say that the project was “way, way off” and only “something I’m thinking about,” so Twi-hards should proceed with their Franco dreams with caution. Whether or not he joins the “Twilight” cast, it’s funny to note that his brother, Dave, actually auditioned for the role of Edward Cullen. And he’s not sorry he lost out on the part to Robert Pattinson. “I don’t want that kind of fame,” the younger Franco said. “Hell no. I don’t like the idea of losing my anonymity and not having a personal life.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
