Nicki Minaj Slams Wendy Williams Over Jabs At Husband, Tells Host To Mind Her Own Mess

Source: WENN/Avalon / WENN Now that Nicki Minaj is moving into the broadcasting space, she now has a platform to address anything she pleases including others in her field who throw shots at her personal life. Via Friday’s (November 1) Queen Radio episode on Apple Music, Mrs. Petty had some bars for Wendy Williams after the veteran talk show host made mention of Minaj’s husband and his criminal past during a “Hot Topics” segment. The Blast reports : Nicki slammed Wendy for speaking ill of her husband and basically said she should keep her mouth shut on the topic considering her estranged husband, Kevin Hunter, reportedly got another woman pregnant while they were still married. “When you announce my husband, P, there’s no need for you to mention his past. Every time you mention him, you feel the need to bring these things up as well as something he was wrongfully accused of doing…” Nicki said on Queen Radio. She also added that while she understands that Wendy is a journalist, she could “report the news without that level of viciousness.” The rapper didn’t hold back, turning focus on Wendy Williams and insinuating her husband stepping out on her was karma for all the viciousness she’s done in her past. “B—- where was you at when Kevin had his d— knee deep in that b—- p—-? I pray for you because I know you’re hurting and I know you must be sick and humiliated,” the new bride stated. But it wasn’t just all anger spewing from Nicki’s mouth. She also made sure to tell her listeners that she had been cheering Wendy on during her troubled times, but the sweetness didn’t last long. According to the outlet, Minaj says she has even more smoke for Williams on the next episode of Queen Radio . — Photo: WENN

New Monument Will Honor New York City’s Historic Black Seneca Village Community

T he legacy of a historic Black community that once resided in the epicenter of New York City will be memorialized. According to the Smithsonian , a new monument will capture the history of Seneca Village. A planned monument announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office earlier this month is set to honor a prominent African-American family that once lived in the bustling community. https://t.co/e9lP5P9eNG — Smithsonian Magazine (@SmithsonianMag) October 30, 2019 The 19th-century village—which was cultivated in 1825—was one of the state’s first free Black communities. It spanned from West 83rd Street to 89th Street; which is now Central Park. In the 1850s the village had over 225 residents and African Americans made up two-thirds of the population. Many of the properties that were a part of the village were Black-owned. The creation of Central Park ultimately led to the erasure of the community and the displacement of its residents. Individuals living in Seneca Village were forced to leave in 1857. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced that a monument will be created to pay homage to a prominent family that resided in the community. The Lyons family owned and operated a boarding house for Black sailors. The home also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Mary and Albro Lyons were educators and their daughter Maritcha Remond Lyons was involved in social activism and co-founded the Woman’s Loyal Union of New York and Brooklyn. The $1.15 million memorial is being funded by several organizations including the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund and the JPB Foundation. “The Lyons family story began more than a hundred years ago in a thriving Black community that was razed to build Central Park,” Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Vicki Been said in a statement . “We finally recognize their contribution to New York and American history with a monument.” Although many people are excited about the project, there has been some criticism because the monument may be placed on 106th Street; 20 blocks away from the village’s historic location. There is no word on when the project will be completed. A Lil Positivity: Serena Williams’ Hubby Alexis Ohanian Is Taking The Fight For Paid Paternity Leave All The Way To Congress

Source: Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty Alexis Ohanian Is Committed To Fighting For Family Leave After Alexis Ohanian started a paid parental leave policy for his employees at Reddit , he didn’t think he would become one of the most prominent paternal leave advocates in the United States. Since taking four months off from work after his daughter with Serena Williams was born back in 2017, Ohanian has become an unexpected leader in the fight for paid paternal leave. “We implemented a policy that I didn’t think I was going to be using anytime soon, but a few years later I found myself using and talking about [it] publicly.” The Reddit co-founder said in an interview with Business Insider . “Before I went on leave, I planned to use my entire four months and was casually asked about it on CNBC. I didn’t think anything of it other than, ‘Oh, here’s this great policy, and I should use it.’” Now, not only is Ohanian advocating for his beliefs on social media, but he’s taking the fight all the way to Congress. In October, Alexis ended up spending an entire week on Capitol Hill lobbying business leaders and lawmakers for a national family leave policy. “Because Olympia’s birth was such a complicated one and I watched everything that my wife went through and persevered through … I realized that we had so many advantages and yet this was still such a traumatic experience,” Ohanian recalled. “I couldn’t imagine anyone being put in [that situation] without the peace of mind knowing that they had paid leave.” Since the birth of his daughter, Alexis has been using his social platforms to celebrate fatherhood and the way it has transformed his outlook on life. He has become a serious advocate for paid paternity leave, recently partnering with Dove Men+Care to promote The Pledge for Paternity Leave: a program offering grants to working dads to help them care for their newborns full-time. Last month, Ohanian spent a week away from his venture capital firm to meet with Congressional leaders and discuss legislation for federally mandated paid leave. He believes a federal mandate for paid family leave is the best way to ensure all workers–especially those in low wage jobs and with disabilities–can take time off to be with their families. Fathers getting time off to spend with their little ones is so important, good on Alexis for fighting the good fight!

Hampton University Professor Leads Initiative To Bring Health Screenings To Black Barbershops

View post:

T here is power that lies in the cultural influence of barbershops; especially within the Black community. These establishments have become far more than places where folks come to get their haircut; they’ve evolved into safe spaces where everything from political and social issues to health are discussed. A group of students from Hampton University is tapping into the impact of Black barbershops by utilizing them as an avenue to spread awareness about cancer prevention within the African American community, Southside Daily reported. Nursing professor pilots black men’s health screening program in a Hampton barbershop https://t.co/JASIj7V18s — Daily Press (@Daily_Press) October 18, 2019 The HBCU students teamed up with Hampton University nursing professor Jonathan Romero to launch an initiative called the “Barbershop Outreach Project” which was designed to address the disproportionate survival rates amongst men after they are diagnosed with cancer. Romero and the students—who are all pursuing nursing and pre-med degrees—teamed up with the Hampton-based barbershop BK’s Barbershop to provide health screenings for Black men. The project was created to cultivate a stronger relationship between Black men and the health system and to insert the importance of health screenings into barbershop conversations. “We set up right at the side of the building and we just asked ‘would you be interested in talking to us about your health?’” Romero told the news outlet. “Machismo or masculinity stubbornness will kill you in our community and has killed people in our community. People don’t seek out care so others won’t think they’re weak.” He hopes that Hampton University will be the leading force of change when it comes to Black health in the local community. As far as what’s on the horizon for the Barbershop Outreach Project, the organizers are planning to host more health-focused events at other barbershops. Black barbershops have become vessels for social change on many fronts. Through his program Barbershop Books , entrepreneur Alvin Irby is bringing literature to barbershops across the country to inspire young African American boys to read. B lack women are thriving in the realm of entrepreneurship despite the obstacles they face when it comes to securing capital for their business ventures. Research shows that although less than one percent of Black women entrepreneurs receive venture capital funding, they are the fastest-growing group of business owners in the country. Hair care entrepreneur Muhga Eltigani is one of the many female founders making power moves in business. According to Inc. , the NaturAll Club founder recently became one of about 50 Black women in the country to raise $1 million in funding. This Entrepreneur Just Became One of Few Black Women in the U.S. to Raise More Than $1 Million From VCs. First She Had to Turn Down $500,000 https://t.co/OdOQ8eUe1Z — Inc. (@Inc) October 12, 2019 Eltigani founded NaturAll Club in 2015. The natural hair care subscription platform delivers fresh handmade hair products on a monthly basis. Some of the products include Fresh Avocado Deep Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Growth Serum, and a handmade flaxseed gel. Last year Eltigani won $500,000 in a startup competition but decided to turn down the prize because it would have required her to move her Philadelphia-based company to Buffalo, New York. She wanted to wait for an opportunity that was in alignment with her brand. Her patience paid off and she received an investment from New Voices Fund CEO Richelieu Dennis . Dennis initially made a $1 million investment and after plans for Eltigani’s company grew, he decided to invest another $4 million. Dennis is dedicated to ensuring that women of color entrepreneurs have access to venture capital funding. “The facts about investments in women of color entrepreneurs, particularly black women, are astonishing,” Dennis told the news outlet. “Entrepreneurship among women of color has increased more than 320 percent, but less than 1 percent of those women receive access to the funding needed to sustain and grow their businesses. This is unacceptable.” Several individuals are stepping up to address the funding gap for Black women. Actress Keshia Knight Pulliam teamed up with entrepreneur Arian Simone to launch the Fearless Fund ; a $5 million venture capital fund to support startups created by women of color.
