B lack artists often find themselves fighting for a seat at the table when it comes to having their work featured in exhibitions at renowned art institutions. According to a study conducted by Art News , less than three percent of museum acquisitions over the past ten years have been pieces created by African American artists. Despite the exclusion from mainstream galleries and museums, they are forging paths of their own, carving out spaces where they can share their artistry with the world, and using their work as a means for social and political activism. Bronx-bred visual artist and actor Tyson Hall is one of the individuals a part of a modern-day renaissance of Black artists who are reclaiming their space in the art industry and utilizing their work to uplift and empower their communities. Hall says his passion for activism runs deep. He was born in Washington Heights, New York across the street from the Audubon Ballroom where civil rights leader Malcolm X was murdered. The activist’s impact would later influence pieces of Hall’s work that echoed his messages of Black unity and the power of Black economics; pieces that were created decades after Malcolm X’s untimely death but are still relevant with today’s social and political climate. Hall—who came of age in the Bronx during the birth of hip-hop—has also pulled inspiration from the music genre throughout his career. His first art form was graffiti and then he decided to transition his canvases from MTA trains to sketchbooks. Hall was inspired by the political messages behind the music from groups like Public Enemy and how music mogul Sean Combs remixed soulful tracks from legends like James Brown to introduce that era of music to a new generation. He says incorporating the teachings of Black leaders from the past in his artwork to uplift and inspire the next generation of creatives is something that he strives to do through his work. It was the 1996 film Basquiat that drew him closer to the idea of using art as a form of activism. “Throughout my career, I’ve taken a lot of what our ancestors have said and done and remixed those voices through visual artistic expression,” Hall told NewsOne. “I did a series titled Buy Black where one piece, in particular, had four panels that read “Buy Black” and as you go down each panel it starts to disseminate. It was representative of the short life span of a dollar within the Black community and how we should do more to support each other.” Despite the powerful messages displayed through his art, Hall says one of the most challenging parts of being a Black artist is getting his work placed in galleries and museums. Instead of waiting for these art institutions to give him an opportunity, Hall has developed his own and has created spaces for his work. His pieces are on the walls at Harlem restaurants including Angel of Harlem and Corner Social and he has donated his work for auction to charities that include The Jackie Robinson Foundation, Abyssinian Baptist Church, the MOCADA Museum, and the ARRC. Going beyond the canvas, Hall uses acting as a form of artistry. His acting credits include Paid in Full , American Gangster , and Godfather of Harlem . He does motivational speaking as an avenue to empower inner-city children to use art as a means for change. He’s also developing a platform called SOL (Solidifying Our Legacy) Media Plus which is dedicated to educating, empowering, and connecting the creative community. As far as his advice for emerging Black artists, he says to “lock in and identify with your purpose as an artist to push forward.” SEE ALSO: Issa Rae Invests In Black Woman-Led Tech Startup Diddy Donates $1M To Fund New Bronx Charter School [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3888948″ overlay=”true”]
Bronx-Bred Creative Tyson Hall Uses Art As A Means For Activism
Last week, Larissa Lima snapped a selfie with Corey Rathgeber . In the aftermath, Larissa and Evelin Villegas went to war . It got very, very ugly. Things appeared to calm down a little. As Leida Margaretha (of all people!) suggested, it was mostly a misunderstanding. This week, Larissa spoke out in order to clear the air about her intense, vicious feud with Evelin. “Hey, guys, I would like to clarify the recent events,” Larissa wrote on Instagram. “As everyone knows, Corey [likes] to travel and meet up with other cast members,” she noted. Larissa continued, stating the obvious: “and we met.” It was an innocent date, which she explains in detail. Funny — when Corey met with David and Annie, we didn’t see thousands of fans accusing them of having a threesome. Larissa even furnished details of the date for the curious. “We had drinks, we played slot machine games, and talked a lot about life,” she recalled. “Nothing happened,” she confirmed. “Not even a kiss.” “I posted our picture because it was an innocent date,” Larissa emphasized. “And we are both adults.” So whatever has been going down with Corey and Evelin and their strained relationship, Larissa was not coming between them. Larissa’s initial post was simply of having bumped into Corey, of course. She changed her tune, however, when Evelin went on Instagram Live and called her “a frickin’ whore.” In response, Larissa stated that Evelin “should be more respectful toward other women.” That’s true. Also, towards sex workers. “Whore” should really drop out of use. Use “slut” as a compliment or not at all, and leave “whore” for sex workers to use if they so choose. “If she believes she is in a relationship, she should talk to her man to find out what happened,” Larissa suggested. She wrote: “instead of [making] assumptions about someone she does not even know well.” “I gave her advice and support when she [came] crying out,” Larissa revealed. Evelin had evidently been “asking me how [to] deal with haters in my [direct messages].” Both women were absolutely bombarded with hate for months from 90 Day Fiance fans who should know better. “Corey and I were not trying to ‘announce’ a relationship for publicity,” Larissa emphasized to fans, followers, and Evelin. “I’m still single and ready to find my king,” she stated. Well, Larissa is the self-styled “Queen,” so it’s natural that she’d be looking for a king. “Do you want [a] war? Let’s go to war,” she wrote to Evelin specifically. Let’s clarify who you are, OK.” Larissa strongly advised: “Deal with your problems with your man without [getting] me involved.” The feud went above and beyond name-calling, to the point where Larissa began publishing Corey’s private text messages. On the one hand, it could have been worse — he wasn’t sending her nudes or sexting her or whatever. On the other hand, he did tell Larissa a lot of Evelin’s private business, from her visa struggles to their relationship problems. Evelin was royally furious over that. If she and Corey can’t keep it together for a few weeks of turmoil, maybe they’re really not meant to be. That’s not Larissa’s fault. We’ve got to hand it to Tekashi 69. Many celebrities have been imprisoned over the years, but very few have managed to remain this relevant while serving their sentences. Of course, that relevance is likely to get Tekashi stabbed the second he walks out of protective custody, but hey — bad press is better than no press, right? Actually, whoever came up with that saying probably would have agreed to the addendum “unless that bad press is likely to get you straight-up murdered.” Anyway, as you’ve probably heard, Tekashi recently took the stand and testified against two members of his former gang, the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. As their name indicates, the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods are not a group that you want to piss off, but Tekashi — real name, Daniel Hernandez — likely felt that he had little choice. When Hernandez was arrested for a laundry list of crimes last year, it initially looked as though he might remain behind bars for the rest of his life. But thanks to his testimony — which led to the convictions of Anthony “Harv” Ellison and Aljermiah “Nuke” Mack — Mr. 69 could be a free man as early as next month. When he first started snitching, it was widely assumed that Tekashi would enter witness protection upon his release. Now, however, it seems the rapper has no intention of disappearing. In fact, he’s reportedly planning on becoming more famous than ever. According to TMZ, Tekashi has already sold the movie rights for his tory to fellow hip hop artist 50 Cent. And that’s not the only wheeling and dealing Hernandez did from his cell this week. Multiple outlets have now confirmed that Tekashi has signed a deal with his old record label, 10K Projects, that’s reportedly worth more $10 million. While the exact terms of the agreement are under wraps, insiders claim the 69 has promised several projects to the label and plans to get to work immediately upon his release. Obviously, the guy has a lot to celebrate these days. But he has also many reasons to be fearful. Even if he’s safe from violent retaliation, as he clearly believes, Tekashi’s career might be over as a result of his decision to turn state’s witness. After all, credibility is king in the world of hip hop, and it seems unlikely that the record-buying public will rush to embrace a known snitch.

Source: Andrew Lichtenstein / Getty Five Gang Members Receive Life Sentences in ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz’s Murder It looks like #JusticeForJunior is finally being served. Today, five members of the Trinitarios gang were handed lengthy prison sentences for the murder of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz , the 15-year-old who was attacked outside of a bodega in the Bronx back in 2018. According to the reports from the New York Times , 19-year-old Manuel Rivera was sentenced to 23 years to life prison, while his co-defendants—Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago, 25; Jose Muniz, 23; and Elvin Garcia, 25—all received 25 years to life. 25-year-old Jonaiki Martinez Estrella was handed the heaviest sentence (life in prison without parole) as the one who allegedly plunged a knife into Guzman-Feliz’s neck and ultimately killed him. The announcement of these sentences comes nearly four months after the five gang members were found guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, second-degree conspiracy, and second-degree gang assault. As of now, according to reports from The Times , eight other defendants are still awaiting trial. On June 20, 2018, surveillance video captured Feliz-Guzman running into a bodega in the Bronx. He was followed by five men who ended up dragged him out of the shop and onto to the sidewalk, where others were waiting. Security cameras from nearby buildings captured them attacking the 15-year-old, stabbing him with small knives and machetes. After the gang members fled the scene, Junior managed to get to the nearby St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead only minutes after arriving. According to law enforcement, the attackers had mistaken Feliz-Guzman for a rival gang member.

T.I. Shares His List Of Legendary ATL Emcees It seems like everyday, someone randomly drops some sort of “prestigious” list that leaves the Internet in shambles. Earlier this year, there was a whole debate about Joe Budden landing the number three spot on the Best Rappers Alive list. Now, T.I. is throwing his hat in the ring with his own special hip hop list. On Thursday, Tip stopped by Studio One ATL to give the scoop on his new Netflix show Rhythm & Flow, and was asked if he had to create a Mount Rushmore of Atlanta Hip Hop, whose face would grace the statue? After giving his breakdown about the idea of “fact vs opinion”, the Grand Hustle CEO responded: “I’m up there. I feel like it’s me, Andre 3000. Big Boi.” But it didn’t end there. Check out the full video above to see who else made the list. And catch Rhythm & Flow streaming now on Netflix.
