Source: Detroit Free Press / Getty As news spread that the White House offered to help France rebuild after the Notre Dame Cathedral fire in Paris, Americans were outraged since adequate help had not yet been provided to the community of Flint, Michigan right here at home. Fortunately, on Monday, it was announced Flint is finally set to receive the remaining $77.7 million it was promised, as part of the $120 million loan allocated to the city back in 2017 following their water crisis . “$77.7 million in loan assistance at a zero percent interest rate with 100-percent principal loan forgiveness,” Michigan Department of Environmental Quality announced . “The loan will fund the completion of a secondary water source pipeline, Dort Street and Cedar Street Reservoir and Pump Station improvements, construction of a chemical feed building, replacement of the Northwest transmission main, water main and water meter replacement, water quality monitoring panels, and contingency service line replacement funding. These projects will enhance the water distribution system by ensuring long-term compliance and protection of public health.” Monroe County and the City of East Lansing will also receive funding to improve their respective water distribution systems . “While we are grateful for this funding it’s important to understand it’s not new funding,” Flint’s Director of Public Works Rob Bincsik said, according to MLive . “The federal government awarded this funding and is utilizing the MDEQ’s Drinking Water Revolving Fund as the mechanism to disperse it to the City of Flint.” This is great news and we’ll continue to keep you informed as updates are provided. When Beyoncé dropped “Formation” back in 2016 , I knew that something about her had changed. Or maybe it didn’t. Perhaps that “newly perceived” pro-Blackness had always been there, she just wasn’t “allowed” to show it to the world. There’s a moment in the new Netflix documentary ‘Homecoming’ that may reference that time, when she may have not felt free or empowered to speak her truth as an artist. “As a Black woman, I used to feel like the world wanted me to stay in my little box. And Black women often feel underestimated,” she says. Well, if anything is clear, it’s that Queen Bey is emancipated from the restraints that were once placed on her. Gone are the days of her being safe and appeasing her white fans, the same fans that could easily consume her R&B music in one breath and deny her Blackness in another. Because regardless of Coachella’s overwhelming whiteness and Bey being the first Black woman to headline the concert series, her Blackety Blackness and the aesthetic and power associated with HBCUs were front and center. And like everything she does at this stage of her career, that too was intentional. “Instead of me pulling out my flower crown. It was important that I brought our culture to Coachella,” Beyoncé stressed, adding, “Creating something that will live beyond me, that will make people feel open and like they’re watching magic.” See, on that stage, Beyoncé was home, reliving the old days when her young “country ass” would watch the “battle of the bands” and how she once yearned to graduate from an HBCU like her father. You know, before her other passions took her in a different direction. However now, at the age of 37, it feels as if she’s come back home to herself, all while paving a new path, crafting a different narrative and meaning. Not just in her music, but in the world. I’d say that if “Formation” was the inciting incident and “Lemonade” was the rising action, #Beychella is the beautiful and unapologetic climax of this amazing story. And for those wondering why revisiting “Homecoming” is so necessary, the answer is simple. Beyoncé didn’t just do this for herself or for Blue. She did this for the culture. She did this for us. The two-hour and seventeen minute “Homecoming” digs deeper than what we giddily streamed on YouTube in the wee hours of the morning last year. It gives us behind the scene footage of the tireless work and intense planning that went into this cultural masterpiece. Who knew that one performance translated into eight grueling months of planning and rehearsals. Not to mention, all the precious time Bey took away from mothering, bonding and breastfeeding her baby twins, Rumi and Sir . But that was the sacrifice she was willing to make in order to give Black folks some much-needed joy. When you see just how persistent Bey was in “building things from the ground up,” we see how this joyful perfection was constructed. Not only did she handpick every dancer herself, she “picked every light, the fabric of the steps, the height of the pyramid, the shape of the pyramid,” reminding us that every “tiny detail had an intention.” No wonder she described herself as “super specific,” but you have to be when you have a vision this grand. While we see Bey be the creative beast we’ve always known her to be, we also get glimpses of her being a mere mortal like the rest of us. In one scene, which I’m glad didn’t get edited out; she’s expressing her frustration to a room of lot of men about how her notes for the show were not being applied, repeatedly. Remember: Bey may be a bawse and the one signing the checks, but she’s also a #BlackWomanAtWork, which can also mean being overlooked and ignored. In addition, throughout the film she speaks openly and freely about the toll her “unexpected” pregnancy took on her body and the journey it took for her to get to a place where she could perform, and perform to her expected incredibly high standard. “My body went through more than I knew it could. I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth,” she confides, adding, “I had an extremely difficult pregnancy. I had high blood pressure. I developed toxemia, preeclampsia.” Fearing for the life of one of her twins she had an emergency C-section, only months later finding herself on that soundstage, pushing herself further than she’d ever done. In one scene, we see her like we’ve never seen the seasoned performer before: Curled up on the floor, clutching at some spasming muscles in her belly, looking defeated. Yet, somehow, she dug deep and persisted. But the most transformative takeaways from “Homecoming” aren’t just Beyoncé’s physical journey, her incredible work ethic or her overall greatness. It’s that her show was a celebration of every last Black body on stage and every last Black body that consumed the performance. An act I would argue is overtly political, especially when you think about how often our bodies are overpolicied and scrutinized by the state and beyond. To be great, and see that greatness reflected in you and the institutions and the legacies you hold dear is powerful and affirming. Not to mention, liberating. “It was important for me that everyone that had never seen themselves represented felt like they were on that stage with us,” Bey explained. Adding, “Rejoice in the imperfections and the wrongs that are so damn right. I wanted everyone to feel thankful for their curves, their sass, their honesty – thankful for their freedom.” See, for her, the stage was this utopia, a space with “no rules,” where “none of us were marginalized.” A place where Black folks, our rich history and our divine excellence weren’t perceived as a threat or a problem. Instead, that glorious shine was welcomed with open arms. And that right there is what home is supposed to feel like, an unconditional love, a profound sense of safety and utter familiarity. And if it doesn’t feel that way, Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” reminds us that we have the agency and the will to create our own homes, wherever we damn well choose and in our own flawless Black image. Responds To HBCU Prostitution Scandal The nation’s first black sorority has issued an official statement on a prostitution scandal at a historically black college. As previously reported a woman named Alecia Jeanetta Johnson, the former executive assistant to the President of Fort Valley State University, was indicted for sex work and pimping. Prosecutors reported that the 49-year-old performed sex acts in exchange for money and arranged for another woman to provide sex services to prominent men in exchange for money. Now Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is releasing a statement confirming that the chapter with which Johnson was reportedly affiliated with at the school, Alpha Beta, has been fully reinstated after an internal investigation. The sorority adds that Johnson hasn’t acted as Alpha Beta chapter’s graduate advisor since 2014 and any reports otherwise are false. An exclusive statement from the sorority’s Executive Director Cynthia Howell was sent to Rolling Out magazine. “Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated — now in our 111th year — is an organization committed to cultivating unity, health, education and human rights among women and confronting issues that concern our more than 300,000 members in 1,021 chapters around the globe. We hope that the indictments recently issued in the Fort Valley State University case will end the speculation and inaccurate information about Alpha Kappa Alpha that has circulated in the media since April 2018. “Any media coverage that identifies one of the individuals formally charged as the graduate advisor for Fort Valley State’s undergraduate chapter, Alpha Beta, is incorrect. The individual has had no direct supervisory responsibility for the chapter since 2014. It is unfortunate that the alleged misdeeds of an individual acting independently of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority have resulted in misconceptions and diverted attention from the honorable work our organization delivers to millions of people through a myriad of programs. “Alpha Beta’s status within Alpha Kappa Alpha was restored in 2018 following our own internal investigation,”. Based on the results of an in-depth review of the facts, we found no wrongdoing, and Alpha Beta was fully exonerated. The issuance of the indictments supports our conclusion. Furthermore, the chapter continues to remain in good standing with Fort Valley State University. “Now that the indictments have been issued, we hope the unsubstantiated innuendos and misinformation related to Alpha Beta will end. We commend the chapter members, who were subjected to degradation and humiliation as a result of the false claims, for their ongoing decorum over the past year. The young women of Alpha Beta chapter have demonstrated grace under pressure, poise and maturity as they proudly continue to support our focus on ‘Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service.’” Johnson faces six counts of prostitution, three counts of pimping and two counts of solicitation of sodomy. The Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office also indicted six men on one count each of solicitation of sodomy along with two counts each of pandering stemming from actions that allegedly happened in 2017 and 2018. Back in November, we reported that Chip and Joanna Gaines were returning to television . Now, we know which TV network they’re taking over and they’ve announced their very own streaming service. But some fans are feeling a little put out — and see this as nothing but a calculated business move designed to enrich the Gaines brand. The Wrap reports that Allison Page of HGTV has been named the president of an exciting new project. That project will be a “multiplatform joint venture between Discovery, Inc. and the Gaines’ Magnolia brand.” The Fixer Upper stars will be taking over what we currently know as the DIY Network, which falls under the Discovery umbrella. Though we do not yet know the names of this new channel, TVE app, and SVOD service, we do know one thing. The world has been told to expect to see “Magnolia” somewhere in there. Discovery CEO David Zaslav released a statement on this new venture. “Chip and Joanna Gaines have become trusted, household names since the debut of Fixer Upper ,” Zaslav notes. “And through this joint venture,” he continues. “Discovery is proud to extend our relationship with them.” “They’ve got authenticity and relatability,” he observes. Zaslav describes those traits as forming “that special something that is so difficult in our business to find.” Zaslav goes on to explain why Discovery knows that investing in the Gaineses is the right move. “People love them, their taste, their businesses,” he points out. “They’ve built an ecosystem that aligns perfectly with our vision at Discovery,” he adds. Zaslav points out that Discovery has a lot of motivation “for fueling people’s passions.” So it seems like the brands are a natural fit for each other. Chip and Joanna Gaines also released a joint statement about this exciting new development. “Our intention with this network,” the statement begins. The Gaineses continue: “is to create and curate content that inspires, encourages, and helps to build bridges across our communities.” “We want honest, authentic programming,” the statement affirms. They want to create content “that brings families together.” “We believe David Zaslav and the team at Discovery are the perfect partners for this ambitious joint venture,” The Gaineses express. “And,” their statement continues. “We know Allison Page is the right person to lead this charge.” She’s certainly going to have her hands full, but she’s proven herself already at HGTV. “We’re ready to get started,” Chip and Joanna’s statement concludes. “And are expectant for all that’s ahead.” We’re still waiting on the names that all of these things will have, however. So when is all of this going down? The launch is scheduled for the summer of 2020. As exciting as this is for fans, others feel a little put off. It seems clear that Chip and Joanna have made a number of business decision with the aim of raking in as much cash as possible. Some of us would say that there’s nothing wrong with that, but others feel that this is a betrayal of their wholesome family image.
