Kim Kardashian has reportedly been in contact with Jared Kushner and the White House for months about Johnson’s case, according to Mic . In 1997, a Memphis paper reported she lead a “multimillion-dollar drug ring that dealt in tons of cocaine from 1991-94.” However, who knows how accurate “multimillion-dollar drug ring” is — this was the era of Clinton’s crime reform bill, which was locking up Black men and women for drug crimes and giving them long, mandatory prison sentences. After Alice and her husband divorced in 1989, she lost her job at Fedex, which she had for seven years, and her youngest son was killed in a motorcycle accident, she admitted to CNN.com , “ I made some very poor decisions out of desperation. I want this part to be clear: I acknowledge that I have done wrong. I made the biggest mistake of my life to make ends meet and got involved with people selling drugs.” Alice Marie Johnson describes her crimes as “I became what is called a telephone mule, passing messages between the distributors and sellers. I participated in a drug conspiracy, and I was wrong.” Her daughter started a petition to ask for President Barack Obama to grant Alice Marie Johnson clemency, but she was denied . Her daughter said since her mother has been in prison “she has been a model prisoner who mentors women and has become an ordained minister. She has also written, directed, and produced several plays and writings for conferences outside of prison walls, choreographed dance teams, and completed many classes and certifications. Her supporters include Congressman Steve Cohen (D) Tennessee, Congressman Bennie Thompson (D) Mississippi, and Congressman Marc Veasey (D) Ft. Worth, Texas.” While this is a valiant effort from Kim and we hope she is successful in getting Alice Marie Johnson released from jail, unfortunately, Trump is calling for the death penalty for drug-related crimes. Though she had appeared in the past on Love & Hip-Hop: New York , Cardi B was catapulted to becoming a household name with her hit single, “Bodak Yellow.” After being entranced by her music — the lyrics, the hook, everything — a lot of people were drawn in by her looks. Cardi B is hot. She just is. You can tell from the photos. When someone’s looks are tied to their brand, as is so often the case, they seldom let people see them with their guard down. Like a growing number of celebrities, Cardi B plays by a different set of rules. Take a look at her makeup-free look and her big, natural hair. She looks great! She looks different, but certainly not unrecognizable, which means that she’s doing right by herself when she does her makeup. Cardi B captioned this photo: “Knock me down 9 times but i get up 10 bitch!” From the flow, that actually sounds like it would be a perfect lyric for “Bodak Yellow.” But the line is actually from another song of hers, “Get Up 10.” (Logistically, one assumes that Cardi B got up once before any of the nine knockdowns occurred, which would explain in the discrepency between how many times she is knocked down and how many times she arises) Showing herself with her natural hair — well, straightened to some degree, but mostly natural — is actually a big deal, in a way that sharing a makeup-free snap is not. Because women of color living in the Western world have had their appearances critiqued and controlled for centuries, forced by white supremacy to conform to European beauty standards. Cardi B may play that game with her public appearance, but this photo is a powerful and important reminder that she has a lot of hair, and that she has to put in a great deal of work to make it appear as it does in public. (When she isn’t wearing a wig, that is) Recently, Cardi B announced her pregnancy . She is pregnant by her fiance, Offset. Initially, many of her fans grew concerned when she became engaged so quickly after skyrocketing to fame. They wondered if Offset was hitching himself to her before it really hit home for her what an incredible future her career has in store. (Doubts were magnified when a woman came forward claiming to be Offset’s baby mama … and Offset’s refusal to take a paternity test ) Many of those concerns have vanished as fans are enthusiastic for Cardi B to become a mom. Cardi B’s selfie is inspirational and we’re so glad that she elected to share it. That does not mean that we don’t like any of her other looks. On the most recent episode of Dancing With The Stars , infamous Olympics legend Tonya Harding pulled off the Foxtrot. Her performance was pretty good, but it wasn’t perfect. And Tonya broke down in tears afterwards. An insider’s report says that Tonya’s competition think that her tears are fake, and are more than ready for her to go. RadarOnline reports that Tonya Harding’s fake tears were the last straw for the other dancers. “Tonya’s tears just did not sit well with the other contestants.” They were not charmed. And she was apparently already on their last nerve. “And they are already getting fed up with her theatricals.” Okay, so “theatricals” is a nonsense word. A person is theatrical . A theatrical person might display theatrics . “Everyone is saying that she completely faked her crying episode on-screen during the premiere.” And apparenlty they all know what she’s really like, behind the scenes. “Because she is not that emotional in real life.” It was more than just crocodile tears that rubbed them the wrong way. “She is such a huge drama queen and it seems that she believes she is the star of the show already.” And the insider says that she believes that for a not-too-bad reason. “The producers seem to agree.” They’ve been putting her front and center in their promos. “Because they are using her imagery for most of the promotion of this current season.” Weird, consider that Adam Rippon is the huge star from, you know, this century. But that’s none of our business, we guess. Apparently, Tonya’s “theatricals” and other antics have people thoroughly exhasperated. “Everyone is already just so sick of her.” Perhaps they wouldn’t mind her so much if she were dominating the competition? But she hasn’t been doing too badly. She hasn’t been sent home, anyway. Yet . “And the other contestants all agree that they all need to up their game.” They apparently have one goal in mind — aside from victory. “And get her eliminated as soon as possible.” Hey, it’s a competition. This sounds like fair motivation. We will play devil’s advocate for a moment. Let us consider, for example, that it is easy for people to hold a negative opinion of Tonya. She is, of course, implicated in the infamous attack on Nancy Kerrigan. Honestly, among younger people, many would not even remember her name were it not for that legacy — and the recent I, Tonya film on the subject. So it is easy to see how people might view Tonya through the filter of their preconceptions. At the same time … Tonya’s reputation probably didn’t come out of nowhere. Tonya Harding has been disgraced ever since Nancy Kerrigan’s attack . She’s had a number of less-than-ideal moments in terms of public relations and optics. She may have been hoping that Dancing With The Stars would be her redemption arc. But the show itself will thrive on drama. The drama of her winning or losing will work just as well. And if she’s poorly behaved behind the scenes … that honestly helps drive up interest in the show. Back in February, Kevin Smith suffered a heart attack that nearly claimed his life. Fortunately, the beloved filmmaker pulled through, and these days, he's up and about, and once again meeting the many demands of his still-thriving media empire. Smith updated fans on his condition throughout his recovery, noting that he rapidly lost 17 pounds after switching to a mostly plant-based diet. Yes, the man who created such characters as Bluntman & Chronic and who hosts a web series called Fatman on Batman might not seem like the most likely health guru, but Smith has been to the brink and turned things around. And while he admits that some of his vices led to the slow deterioration of his health, there's one indulgence that may have literally saved his life. Smith appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, and he shared the tale of receiving some very surprising news from his physician. It seems Smith was in New York to perform a stand-up set when the attack occurred, and his pre-show herbal relaxation ceremony wound up making the difference between life and death. “I asked my doctor like after this was all done, I was like, 'I hate to ask this question, man, but did I have a heart attack because of the weed? Because I smoked a joint right before the show,'” Smith told the audience. “No. In fact, quite the opposite,” Smith recalled the doctor saying. “That weed saved your life.” Yes, they're the words every stoner dreams of hearing. And we think it's safe “He said, you kept calm…they told you [you] were going through stuff and you kept calm the whole time, so that joint saved your life,” Smith told said. “I'm putting that on a T-shirt,” the 47-year-old concluded. We're guessing that's one item of merchandise that would prove very popular with Smith's fans.
