A pair of contrasting Whitney Houston covers hit the small screen this week. At least in terms of their planning. First, in a tribute to the late singer, Jennifer Hudson took to the Grammy Awards stage – with just 24 hours to prepare – and belted out an incredible rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” Then, on last night’s new Glee episode – by sheer coincidence, in a scene taped weeks ago – Amber Riley covered the same classic track as part of that Fox program’s Valentine’s Day episode, shedding tears in the process over her character’s status on the show. Who did a better job? Watch both and decide: Jennifer Hudson – I Will Always Love You (Tribute to Whitney Houston) Amber Riley – I Will Always Love You (Glee Clip) WHO SANG WHITNEY BETTER?
The show aired last night, but naturally it was recorded weeks ago and coincidentally aired. More On Bossip! Live 30-minute special will feature interview clips with Houston dating back to her network debut in 1986. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston in 1995 Photo: 20th Century Fox/Getty Images MTV will pay respects to Whitney Houston on Wednesday (February 15) with a live 30-minute tribute entitled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words.” The MTV News special, airing at 7:30 p.m. ET and hosted by Sway Calloway, will feature interview clips of Houston from her network debut in 1986 through her final interview. Houston died at age 48 on Saturday in her Los Angeles hotel room of as-yet-undetermined causes. The singer had a long history with the network, dating back to her 1985 self-titled debut album. The third single from that multiplatinum smash was “How Will I Know,” which helped introduce the singer to a wider audience when it became one of the first videos by a black female singer to go into heavy rotation on MTV, blasting open the doors for a whole generation of R&B and pop divas to follow. Along the way, Houston smashed a number of records , including the best-selling single of all time by a female artist, her iconic cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” The Grammy-winning album that song came from, the soundtrack to her big-screen debut, “The Bodyguard,” also set the all-time record for soundtrack albums, with more than 44 million copies sold worldwide. During the MTV special, Sway will share personal stories from music celebrities on Houston’s impact and her peerless voice. The show will stream simultaneously on MTV.com and be available on demand immediately after it airs. In addition, MTV News will continue its coverage of the tragic death of the singer, covering everything from breaking developments to Houston’s funeral . Houston will be laid to rest in her native Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday at an invitation-only private funeral at her childhood house of worship, the New Baptist Church. The cause of Houston’s death is still unknown. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office continues to quell any speculation. “I know there are reports that she maybe was drowned or did she overdose, but we won’t make a final determination until all the tests are in,” he told CNN . It appears that Whitney Houston’s Mother, Sissy Houston, wants as little drama around her daughter’s funeral as possible. First, the family requested that NO public memorial take place. Now, there are rumors that Bobby Brown (Whitney’s Ex-Husband) has been banned from the private funeral to take place in New Jersey this weekend. From ObnoxiousTV Bobby Brown is “extremely disappointed” after hearing that several members of Whitney Houston’s family do not want him to attend the singer’s funeral … sources tell Mr. Obnoxious. Sources close to Bobby telling folks … people connected to the Houston family have reached out to Bobby to warn him that he shouldn’t attempt to attend the funeral because the family isn’t fond of him. However … we’re told Bobby has not received any OFFICIAL word from the family about his invite status.
Is THIS what was in the note that she gave Brandy??? According to TMZ reports : Whitney Houston told friends she “really wanted to see Jesus” in the days before her death … and claimed she had a feeling the end was near for her … this according to several of Whitney’s friends. TMZ has learned … Whitney had been very spiritual in her final days … quoting the bible, singing hymns and engaging in intense conversations about Jesus Christ and the afterlife with her close friends and family members. We’re told …. on Friday , one day after she performed, “Yes Jesus Loves Me” at Tru nightclub in Hollywood, Whitney told one of her friends, “I’m gonna go see Jesus … I want to see Jesus.” The next morning, hours before her death, Whitney was discussing a bible passage involving John the Baptist and Jesus … when Houston flashed a big smile and remarked, “You know, he’s so cool … I really want to see that Jesus.” Another source tells us … Whitney had been telling friends she “felt like her time was coming” … and wanted to make sure she spent her time praising her lord and savior whenever she could. Unfortunately, Whitney’s premonition came true. After seeing Tupac, Biggie, and several other artists premonitions come to life, do you believe in these iconic stars talked themselves into death? It’s not quite up there with the Jennifer Hudson Whitney Houston tribute , but LeAnn Rimes also paid homage to the late icon in concert this weekend. Rimes played a gig in Reno, Nevada, on Saturday night, just a few hours after Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room in Los Angeles. During the show, LeAnn, clearly choked up, took a moment to pay tribute to Houston by singing her #1 hit, “I Will Always Love You,” to the crowd. The song hit an emotional note for LeAnn. LeAnn Rimes Tribute to Whitney Houston Before the show, Rimes tweeted “Wow, I learned how to do what I do because of 3 great women, one being Whitney. She was always so kind to me.” “This is not gonna be an easy show for sure. I’m just doing what she taught me to do, listening to her over & over as a little girl. Her death is very surreal.” She did her idol justice, don’t you think?
Let’s all stop and give thanks for Nancy Grace, shall we? Seriously, without this attention-starved egomaniac, we might not know just how low humanity can sink. Earlier today, during an appearance on CNN Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin, the blowhard evoked the instances of Anna Nicole Smith and Michael Jackson when talking about Whitney Houston, wondering whether someone else played a role in the singer’s death. “I’d like to know who was around her, who – if anyone – gave her drugs… following alcohol and drugs, and who let her slip, or pushed her, underneath that water?” Grace asked, referring to reports that Whitney’s body was found in a hotel room bathtub. “Apparently, no signs of force or trauma to the body. Who let Whitney Houston go under her water? ” Forget the fact that initial reports indicate Houston did NOT die by drowning ; and forget the fact that it seems perfectly reasonable someone could overdose on pills and pass out in a bathtub… Grace is on a role, folks! Grace claims that three prescription drug containers for the same drug – benzodiazepine – were found on the scene, each from three different doctors. No other source corroborates this assertion and CNN itself has released a statement saying “we don’t know that to be true,” but, come on, people! Grace simply MUST weed out a potential Conrad Murray for ratings justice’s sake. “They were medicating her out the yin-yang,” she said.
