John Blackwell Jr. Dies; Beloved Prince Drummer Was 43

John Blackwell Jr., a musician best known for having toured with Prince as the artist’s main drummer for over a decade, passed away on Tuesday. He was 43 years old. The exact cause of death is unknown at this time, but Blackwell was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year after falling ill and undergoing a number of tests in Japan. The popular drummer’s wife, Yaritza, who updates her husband’s social media accounts, shared the news Tuesday on Instagram via an image of her grasping his hand. She wrote that he died “peacefully” in her company and added: “Thanks God for his life and thanks everyone for their support.” Last July, his wife set up a GoFundMe account to cover Blackwell’s medical expenses; it has raised over $78,000 to date. According to USA Today, the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office in Tampa has been asked for further information on Blackwell’s passing, but has not yet responded to this request Blackwell took to stages around the world alongside Prince for 15 years. He was well known and beloved for his unique style of drumming, having graduated from Berklee College of Music before being recruited by Prince in 2000 to play in his band New Power Generation. Blackwell also performed with Patti LaBelle, Justin Timberlake and Cameo, among other big-time artists and singers. He tragically lost an arm over the last year, as he underwent various surgeries in an attempt overcome his diagnosis. In the fall of 2016, Blackwell told Tampa TV station WTSP-TV that Prince was like a father figure to him. The two friends were extremely close. He said another close acquintence had recently told him that he could just imagine Prince calling for him to play as part of his band up in heaven. “I can hear Prince now say, ‘I’ll just call John.’ No, you ain’t! I don’t want to do that gig. Not yet,” Blackwell, who took up drumming at the age of three, said at the time. In response to his passing, many others within the world of music expressed their sadness and sent their condolences on social media. To wit, Sheila E. wrote: “My beautiful friend John Blackwell passed away 2day Plz keep his family in prayer. He was amazing manLuv u my brother,” along with the following picture: Added Travis Barker: “Rest In Peace #JohnBlackwell Your legend will live 4ever. One of the best to ever pick up drumsticks. Prayers to family and friends.” And Morris Day: “We lost another brother… John Blackwell made his transition today!!! Our prayers go out to his wife and family!” We share these sentiments and we send our best wishes to Blackwell’s family. May he rest in peace. Get In Formation: Hubby Hov Had Plenty Of Help From Queen Beysus On 4:44

(Photo by Kevork Djansezian) Beyoncé Helped A&R Jay Z’s ‘4:44’ Album Jay Z’s new ‘4:44’ album dominated conversations over the weekend, but No I.D., the producer responsible for scoring the project is spilling details about the project and whether or not Jay was responding to ‘Lemonade.’ In an interview with the NY Times , No I.D. says he, Hov and his engineer Guru, all agreed that the project shouldn’t be a ‘Lemonade’ response: One that I didn’t see him record that really hit me was obviously “4:44.” Me, him and Guru, his [recording] engineer, knew that we didn’t want him to do an album of “Lemonade” response. We just wanted him to respond and then let it be and still touch on other things. I created that beat to box him into telling that story. I put the sample from the singer Hannah Williams — it starts off with, “I find it so hard/When I know in my heart/I’m letting you down everyday.” I remember him hearing it and looking at me like, “O.K., fine.” He went home, wakes up at 4:44 [a.m.] and calls Guru over [to record]. I was blown away. I just walked out of the studio and wanted to go find my wife and hug her. I told him that’s the best song he’s ever written. Everything it covers about being a man, being in a relationship, being a father, how you affect your kids. These things don’t really get touched on in music, especially in hip-hop. Powerful stuff right? It’s wonderful to see hip-hop have a positive effect on black families. Isn’t it? Here’s a little bit more about how the impact of ‘Lemonade’ affected the making of ‘4:44’: No, we never directly spoke about that album. Mainly because if he talks about himself, it’s going to bleed into that regardless. But there’s a difference in talking about it for the sake of response and for the sake of honesty and the truth. The truth needs to explain why you are the way you are, why you did what you did. We know what happened. We got it. But what were the circumstances that led to this and how do you feel about it? Lastly, No I.D. reveals that Hov had plenty of help from his wife Beyoncé who offered genius level input: I always call Bey our de facto A&R. Pillow talk is the strongest conversation on the planet. Every song has to get past her ears, in my eyes. She came by a lot and played a good part in helping us get over hurdles on certain records. Of course she’s genius-level with that. Now that’s something special, incredible and amazing. We’re so happy that Jay-Z has grown to be a man capable of embracing his wife in all her power and glory and celebrating his life and achievements in a way that we can all be proud of. Welp. The coupled up Carters have done it again. Go head and let Hubby Hov upgrade you.

Michael Bond Dies; Paddington Bear Creator Was 91

You can be aware of something your whole life without knowing anything about its creator. Paddington Bear’s creator, Michael Bond, has died at age 91. He passed away at home after a brief illness. On December 24th, 1956, Michael Bond noticed a lonely-looking stuffed bear sitting on a shelf. On impulse, he bought it for his wife. Inspired, he wrote A Bear Called Paddington in just 10 days. On October 13th, 1958, that book was published. But that was only the beginning. Paddington Bear’s adventures in books have been ongoing. The last story about the marmalade-loving bear, titled Paddington’s Finest Hour , came out in April. It’s not uncommon for authors to keep publishing until their dying days. Needless to say, it’s very rare for an author to continue writing for 61 years. Not to mention having such a degree of success and a cultural impact that spans the globe. Michael Bond had an Order Of The British Empire, which is like an Order of Merlin from Harry Potter, except real. (I was a kid when Harry Potter came out and there are a lot of things that I thought were wizard things that turned out to just be British) The Duke of Cambridge himself presented Bond with the award in an Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace. This was only two years ago. HarperCollins issued a statement about Michael Bond’s passing: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Michael Bond, CBE, the creator of one of Britain’s best-loved children’s characters, Paddington, died at home yesterday aged 91 following a short illness.” Michael Bond’s own daughter, Karen Jankel, also spoke about her late father: “It’s a shock to everybody. For me, he was the most wonderful father you can imagine, so obviously our loss is personal.” Of course. So many people think of their favorite singers or actors or writers with regard to their art, celebrity status, and creations. It’s too easy to forget that they’re real people with families and personal relationships that have nothing to do with their craft. Karen, however, seems very aware of her father’s global cultural impact, and her statement includes a nod to that: “But it’s wonderful that he’s left the legacy of his books and Paddington that will live on for ever, which is really very special.” “The whole world is lucky to have had him … Paddington himself is so real to all of us. He’s still a part of our family and we’re very lucky.” We can’t imagine how hard it is to to tailor your response to fans while you’re still grieving. Karen Jankel continues, honoring her father’s work. “For him, writing was his life. It was wonderful he could continue writing until the end,” she said. “Because … Paddington and his other characters were so real to him, he became alive to everybody else.” But she doesn’t leave out his character. “You can tell just by reading his books what a lovely person he was. I never came across anybody who disliked my father.” View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam “He was one of those people that people instinctively warmed to and he was as funny as a person and delightful as he was in his writing and as a father.” That is incredibly touching. A lot of people grew up with Paddington Bear, and most of them are old enough to appreciate the joy that this man’s creation brought them as children. Future children will enjoy Paddington Bear all the same — that’s the magic of creating a legacy like that.

Alaskan Bush People Recap: Yes, It’s Cancer

The sad rumor turned into an unfortunate reality on Wednesday night. Following weeks of chatter heading into the final season of Alaskan Bush People, the latest installment of this popular Discovery Channel series confirmed the truth about star Ami Brown… … she has been diagnosed with lung cancer. “Ami started getting sick months ago and we didn’t know what it was, but it changed from the point of ‘something’s wrong’ to ‘something’s wrong ,’” Ami’s husband, Billy, told the camera on this week’s episode. In previews for Season 7 of the show – which centers on a family who has basically cut itself off from civilization and who lives off the land in Alaska – there were hints that Brown was ill. There’s been talk that she was even flown to Los Angeles for treatment. This is what really got folks talking, considering how rarely members of the Browns visit the lower United States. The final set of Alaskan Bush People episodes started filming three months ago. They premiered last Wednesday with a focus on Ami undergoing a biopsy after a number of scans revealed a disturbing mass in her lungs. “Everybody, of course, knows that it will come out good – so we just have to be strong,” said 22-year old daughter Bird last night, trying to remain optimistic as she and her siblings awaited test results. Later on, however, 30-year old Bear went over to a car with a flower for his mom… and noted right away that the news was not positive. His brother, Matt, agreed. He felt the same way. “Seeing mom and dad get out of the car I … kind of already get a feeling that it hasn’t gone too well,” he said, adding: “In one way, I can say that everything in my life has prepared me for this moment. In another way, nothing can.” In the end, it was left to Billy to confirm the family’s worst fears. “Not good. Not good at all,” he told his kids of the exam outcome, explaining as follows: “They’ve got to do some more tests and stuff and what they can see is stage 3 cancer. She could easily be stage 4.” Alaskan Bush People Season 7 Preview: The Biggest Challenge Yet Stage four is the most serious level for a cancer. It typically means the patient does not have a lot of time left. “I don’t care who you are. I don’t care what you’ve been through. I don’t care how old you are. If you hear that your mother has cancer, it’s going to shock you,” said Rain, 14, the youngest of the seven Brown children. “I just wish I could change it somehow. I’m very scared for her,” she added. For Ami, meanwhile, the fear of what will happen to her appeared to be less cumbersome than her concern over the impact this will have on her loved ones. “She doesn’t want to be a burden on someone,” Billy said of his wife. “That’s not Ami. Ami is to take the burden away and take care of everything, but she has to admit to herself that she can’t be that right now. “It’s just time for us to pay it back to her right now, it’s all I think we can do.” To conclude this recap of the latest Alaskan Bush People episode, we’ll leave you with a few words from Ami. Bill and the kids are very loving and supportive. They’re all worried. I tell them, don’t worry. Please don’t worry. Be happy … keep the faith. Good or bad, it’s God’s will and we’ll walk that road. There’s a lot for the kids to experience. I want to be there. I want to hold their babies. I want to hear them laughing … I want to see their eyes wide with enthusiasm as they experience these new things. We’ll continue to tune in each Wednesday night at 9/8c to Discovery and hope that things turn around for Ami. “This is not the end of the road,” said 27-year old son, keeping a hopeful viewpoint and concluding: “It looks like it’s going to be the beginning of maybe a very long, very hard road for everybody. “But we’re just going to have to be stronger than ever and keep up the faith in the good Lord and make it through this.”
