Barack Obama is an unabashed fan of the Chicago Bears and football in general. But the Commander-in-Chief recognizes that changes may need to be made to the sport, considering studies that prove how its violent hits result in a rash of brain injuries and concussions. In an interview with The New Republic , the President says changes may need to be made that may make football “a bit less exciting,” but which will address the long-term health of its participants. “And those of us who are fans maybe won’t have to examine our consciences quite as much,” Obama says, adding he’s unsure if he would allow his son to play the sport. This Q&A appears in the February 11 edition of the publication, with Obama saying he’s mostly focused on college football because professionals are well-paid and are part of a union. “They can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies,” Obama said of NFL players. “You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That’s something that I’d like to see the NCAA think about.” What do YOU think? Would you allow your child to play football? Yes, all sports have risk No, it’s too dangerous View Poll »
Trent Williams, an offensive tackle for the Washington Redskins, will miss his first Pro Bowl after suffering injuries in a nightclub assault Friday. Details are still coming in regarding the incident, which went down in Honolulu and which resulted in two men being sent to the hospital. At least one patron has been arrested and five more are under investigation, but police say Williams is not included among them. Teammate Jammal Brown Tweeted that Williams needed seven stitches from the brawl, but emphasized it “wasn’t his fault… He did nothing wrong.” The third-year pro will be replaced on the Pro Bowl roster by Minnesota tackle Matt Kali. President Obama, meanwhile, just came out and said changes may need to be made because football is too dangerous . But we’re pretty sure his remarks were in relation to on-field hits.
Michelle Williams opens up about her battle with depression after losing her shift at Burger King . Michelle Williams Opens Up About Fight With Depression With a new single out , a solo album in the works and a starring role in a national tour of a Broadway musical, you’d be hard-pressed to tell that Michelle Williams once had difficulty just getting out of bed. Via ABC News reports: The singer-actress — one third of Destiny’s Child alongside Beyonce and Kelly Rowland — said that in the past few months she has emerged from years of suffering from moderate depression. Her dark cloud lifted thanks to exercise, therapy and positive thinking. “I’ve dealt with depression,” the 32-year-old said during a break in rehearsals for a new touring production of “Fela!” that kicks off later this month. “I had to choose to get out of bed and do whatever I needed to do to be happy.” Williams says she suffered her first bout of depression at 15 or 16 and has managed to avoid medication. She is speaking out for the first time about her battle to encourage others to seek help. “We’re taught, ‘Just go to church and pray about it. The Lord is going to heal you.’ Well, in the meantime, I believe God-gifted people, physicians, doctors, therapists — that’s your healing. Take advantage of it,” she said. “Go see a professional so that they can assess you. It’s OK if you’re going through something. Depression is not OK, but it is OK to go get help.” Good for Michelle for speaking out about mental health. Depression and other personality disorders widely go untreated in the Black community because mental health is still considered taboo. Go Michelle!
