‘Harry Potter’ World Cup Recap: It’s Down To Ron And Snape!

Find out the winner during MTV News’ live stream at the ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ red carpet, starting at 4:30 p.m. ET. By Eric Ditzian Alan Rickman as Professor Snape Photo: Warner Bros. In the beginning, there were 64 wizards, witches, elves and ghosts. Each one had been thrown into a cutthroat online tournament, decided by the public and subject to the passions and prejudices of die-hard fans, all to come up with the definitive answer to the question: Who is the greatest “Harry Potter” character of all time? Now that fantastical conundrum is down to just two people: potions master Severus Snape and Gryffindor great Ron Weasley. As of this writing, the two wizards are locked in the heated final match of MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup . Voting is still going on, and the winner will be announced on Monday evening (July 11) during our live stream of the New York red-carpet premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” which begins at 4:30 p.m. ET. It’s a remarkable feat that both men are left standing, considering that over 7 million votes have been cast throughout the four weeks of the tournament. Who would have guessed that Harry Potter himself would get chucked from the tournament in the Elite Eight, a victim of Snape’s fanbase and his remarkable character arc? Big bad Lord Voldemort didn’t even make it that far, losing in the third round to onetime Azkaban prisoner Sirius Black! And Cedric Diggory, hardly a first-tier character, was nonetheless thought to be a potential Cinderella story (given that Robert Pattison portrayed him onscreen). Yet “Potter” fans appeared to unite and overwhelm the “Twilight” set , sending Cedric to a third-round ouster. After upsets, crushing defeats and overwhelming victories, the Final Four fell into place late last week: Snape vs. Hogwarts witch Hermione Granger , and Ron Weasley vs. Black . Hermione may have been the smartest witch of her age and Ron’s cherished gal pal, but none of that was enough to vanquish Snape — the man who killed Dumbledore but is ultimately redeemed by the series’ end. Snape ended up with 62.7 percent of the vote, compared to Hermione’s 37.3 percent. The competition between Ron and Black was much closer. One wizard is Harry’s best friend; the other was Harry’s dad’s best friend. And in the end, barely one percentage point separated the two characters, with Ron ultimately surging forward for the win. So where does that leave us in the final matchup? Snape obviously has the momentum, given his commanding victory over Hermione. Ron has got to be looked at as weakened, considering how he barely survived his Final Four matchup. But he’s the last of the Big Three still alive, and fans of Hermione could well shift their allegiances to Ron. Anything can happen, though Rupert Grint, who plays Ron , isn’t holding out much hope. When we caught up with the actor on Sunday, before the finals had been solidified, he expressed skepticism that Ron could ever defeat Snape. “I don’t think I could do that — I mean, Snape is a great character,” he laughed. Tom Felton Predicts Snape Will Win ‘Harry Potter’ World Cup

‘Everyone loves Snape. He has the greatest story of the lot,’ actor tells MTV News. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Felton Photo: MTV News No matter how you feel about the mean-spirited Draco Malfoy, actor Tom Felton is well aware that the character he’s played for 10 years garners mixed reactions from die-hard “Harry Potter” fans. “Either people loved him or loved to hate him,” Felton told MTV News during a sit-down chat in preparation for the release of the wildly anticipated “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” Even Felton himself has conflicting feelings about how people react to Malfoy. “It’s weird — I never quite know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that Draco is generally … a pleasantly accepted character,” the star said, adding, “I always find it weird when 6-year-olds’ parents say, ‘You’re his favorite character!’ I’m always like, ‘I’m not sure if I should be. I’m not sure that reflects your great parenting skills!” But that doesn’t mean the MTV Movie Awards winner didn’t want his character to win the ongoing “Harry Potter” World Cup . For weeks, “Harry Potter” fans have participated in the bracket game, which will declare the best character in the saga. While Felton’s Draco did make it very far in the tournament before being bested by Final Four competitor Sirius Black (“That’s a little unfair, I think — don’t you?” the 23-year-old pondered to MTV’s Josh Horowitz), it wasn’t quite far enough to take the whole thing. “I’m bitter about not making it to the final post, but at the same time, I’m very grateful. It’s awesome,” the actor said. See the full bracket and vote! Still, Felton, despite being voted out, was more than willing to play along in the World Cup. When asked whom he thinks should advance past the Final Four (Hermione Granger vs. Severus Snape, Sirius Black vs. Ron Weasley) and win the whole thing, the actor said, with no hesitation, “Snape.” He continued, “Everyone loves Snape. He has the greatest story of the lot, I think, where you don’t know which he’s going to be the whole way.” While the “Harry Potter” World Cup picks the best character in the series, not just the final film, Felton still thinks Snape takes the cake. “He has a beautiful ending, doesn’t he?,” Felton asked, adding, “I didn’t expect that at all. It’s so nice to see this hard character Snape turn into this soft shell of a man.” In short, by Felton’s prediction, Severus Snape is “gonna take the crown, man.” Whether you agree or disagree with Felton’s pick, you can still vote throughout the day on Monday, July 11. Then, the winner of the “Harry Potter” World Cup will be announced later that evening during MTV’s live stream of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” red-carpet premiere in New York. Justin Bieber Previews Next Album

Don’t worry, fans: Justin Bieber won’t be promoting perfume forever. The singer is already planning his next album, although it’s unlikely to hit stores any time soon. In an interview with MTV, Justin said of the eventual CD: “I want to] write a lot myself. I will be working with a lot of other producers and stuff like that, but I’m just writing a lot, writing on tour.” Fans have plenty of options to listen to until Bieber does take over the charts with his next release, of course. He’s already come out with (deep breath…) My World, My World 2.0, Never Say Never – The Remixes and My Worlds Acoustic. Expect to hear more of the latter down the road. “I’ve done a lot on my acoustic guitar, so it’s gonna have that vibe. I’m not gonna really limit myself… I know there’s country music, there’s rock music, but my music is different. My voice is not meant for any style. I just want to make music.” Should we bother to ask: Are you excited for a new album from Justin Bieber? [Photo: WENN.com]
