MC began dominating Atlanta airwaves this summer with the help of big names like T.I. — vote in our Hottest poll now! By Steven Roberts Future Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News A few months ago, if you didn’t live in or near Atlanta, you would be hard-pressed to know who Future was. However, if you did live in or near Atlanta, you be hard-pressed not to hear one of his songs on the radio every five minutes with “Magic,” “Ain’t No Way Around It,” “Go Harder” and “Never Been This High,” to name a few. Now, he’s getting national recognition as a contender for MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC . Future was the hook man on YC ‘s “Racks,” which was probably the most infectious track of the first part of this year. However, the rest of the country got the memo in early July when Drake hopped on a remix of the ATL-ien’s “Tony Montana.” The song features Future rhyming in a faux accent as if he were the beloved upstart Cuban drug lord. Drizzy not only adds a verse, but he seemingly adds his stamp of approval to what Future has been building. While their relationship seems to have soured , it hasn’t stopped Future from spreading his name. The MC dropped a number of mixtapes this year (including Dirty Sprite, True Story, Streetz Calling and Free Bricks with Gucci Mane), which helped him build his base and dominate the ATL airwaves. Even Atlanta stalwarts like Gucci, Young Jeezy, T.I. and Big Boi jumped on tracks with the Astronaut Kid to help maintain their own buzz in the city. At the same time, their co-signs helped him get nationwide attention. Future also comes from a sort of hip-hop royalty. He is the cousin of Organized Noize’s Rico Wade. Organized Noize have produced tracks for the likes of Outkast, Ludacris and TLC. It’s a part of Atlanta’s iconic Dungeon Family, making Future a second-generation Dungeon Family member. While their members are known for their lyrical prowess, few people would put Future in their weight class. But he promised his mixtapes weren’t a reflection of what fans could expect on his debut album, Pluto. Only time will tell how bright his future truly is. Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Future (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com , and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results. Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude Tuesday (December 13) when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News’ upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. Blue Slide Park MC earns a spot on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC list — vote now! By Rob Markman Mac Miller showed promise when he dropped his attention-grabbing K.I.D.S. (Kickin’ Incredibly Dop Sh–) mixtape in 2010, and throughout 2011, the Pittsburgh MC has fully capitalized on his rap buzz, proving that he is a musical force to be reckoned with. Now Miller, who, as an independent artist, earned the #1 album in the country when he dropped Blue Slide Park last month, stands as one of the nominees in MTV News’ list of 2011’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs . After deciding he wanted to be an MC at 15, Mac used hip-hop influences like Big L, OutKast and A Tribe Called Quest as well as rock greats like the Beatles, Sublime and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to craft his sound. “My whole thing is being super genuine and being myself,” Mac told MTV News. “Being an MC is a huge part of who I am, but it’s also that other stuff too, like playing instruments and getting into music like that.” There was some early work as part of local group Ill Spoken, but when Miller dropped K.I.D.S. right after graduating from high school, things really began to take off. Anchored by party tracks like “Knock, Knock” and the Lord Finesse-nod “Kool-Aid & Frozen Pizza,” the Rostrum Records spitter started to rack up a series of wins, including his sold-out Incredibly Dope Tour and his appearance on XXL magazine’s 2011 Freshman cover. His next mixtape, Best Day Ever, surprised K.I.D.S. in terms of download numbers, and his first EP, On and On, proved that Mac Miller fans not only would download free projects from the 19-year-old rapper, they’ll also pay for product. Then Mac did the unthinkable when his debut album Blue Slide Park was finally released on November 8, 2011. After selling more than 144,000 copies, BSP became the first indie debut to hit #1 on the Billboard albums chart since 1995’s Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound. The album’s accompanying tour was a success as well, selling out every stop along the way. Yes, 2011 may have been his breakout year, but considering all of his accomplishments, Mac Miller is doing better than some vets in the industry. Still, does he have what it takes to win MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs contest? Only time will tell. Bad Boy signee MGK says, ‘I want to be the hottest ,’ on MTV News’ 2011 list — vote now! By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Machine Gun Kelly Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News Machine Gun Kelly went from a troubled youth trying to find his way in the streets of Cleveland to one of rap’s top prospects in a year’s time. Now, not only has the rapid-fire lyricist gone on to sign with Diddy’s Bad Boy Records, he’s already cutting records with Waka Flocka Flame and his idol, DMX. MGK has created so much of a stir in the rap game that he is now a nominee for MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC. “To be considered for the hottest breakthrough MC of 2011, it’s obviously an honor, but I want to be the hottest . I’ve never been comfortable with sharing anything: I was a single child,” Machine Gun Kelly said on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” Kells began battle-rapping around 2004 while he was still in high school, and graduated to the studio in 2006 when he dropped his very first mixtape, Stamp of Approval . All the while, he struggled through school, but eventually graduated. Kells went on to work a few odd jobs and become a dad. In 2010, he dropped another tape, 100 Words and Runnin’ — but it was with his second tape that year, Lace Up, that folks really began to take notice. Songs like his hometown ode “Cleveland” and the heartfelt “End of the Road” went on to establish MGK as not only a relatable MC, but a fully capable spitter as well. Kells went on to tour and perform across the country, then in August, he announced on “RapFix Live” he had signed a deal with Diddy’s Bad Boy Records . Now MGK is putting the finishing touches on his debut, set to drop in 2012. One of the album’s guests will be Kells’ all-time favorite rapper, DMX. For MGK, recording with the dog was surreal. “I felt like he was going to think I was weird because I kept staring at him the whole time, ’cause I’m like, ‘Dude, this is my idol,’ ” MGK said.
