Sorcery Overload: Florence + the Machine Visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Today in WTF : Indie darlings Florence + the Machine — whom I lovingly call Tori Amos and the Evanescence — visited the spectacular Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando on Thursday. They’re performing at the Hard Rock at Universal CityWalk tonight, but the important thing is that someone took a picture of the group slurping Butterbeer and touring the premises. It’s all a little too much wizardry for me.

By Eric Ditzian Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Photo: Warner Bros. Are you a Dumbledore guy or gal? Perhaps you’re keen on Hermione and Harry? Or maybe you shun the high-profile faces and hold a special place in your heart for Moaning Myrtle or Nearly Headless Nick? Who truly is the greatest “Harry Potter” character of all time? That’s a debate fans have been having since J.K. Rowling published her first novel about a boy wizard in 1997 and one that continues to rage as the final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” nears its July 15 debut. And you know what? It’s time to finally put this fantastical argument to rest! Get ready for MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup , a monthlong tournament pitting 64 “Potter” characters against one another to see which will be decided solely by online fan voting. Jamie Campbell Bower ‘Kind Of Scared’ Of ‘Harry Potter’ Exhibit

‘Camelot’ star says being part of New York’s ‘Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ is ‘a bit weird.’ By Jocelyn Vena Jamie Campbell Bower Photo: MTV News In New York City, fans can check out “Harry Potter: The Exhibition” at the Discovery Times Square building. But, don’t expect “Potter” star Jamie Campbell Bower to stop by anytime soon: He said the whole thing is a bit weird for him. “Unfortunately, I can’t see it,” he explained to MTV News when he stopped by to talk about his new Starz series, “Camelot.” On his way out of town post-interview, he shared another reason why he wasn’t likely to ever check the exhibit: “I’m kind of scared of those kinds of things.” Bower explained that there’s something a bit jarring about having a museum-type exhibit dedicated to a piece of work you’ve done. It also means that in the hearts and minds of “Potter” fans, he’ll never age past 20. “It’s a bit weird. When you do a film or whatever, you’re immortalized, I suppose, but in the job that you’re doing,” he said. “And if you take that away and put it in a different [world] — for example, that [exhibit] or the Wizarding World that they have in Orlando (Florida) — it’s scary. We’ll be young forever.” With the franchise coming to an end with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” this July, Bower admitted that it’s a bit bittersweet saying goodbye. “I was only on set for a very short period of time, and I only play a very small role in the film,” he explained. “I suppose, just for me personally, being able to be involved in something that is taking place in England for 10 years and something that has given people jobs and a great boost to the British film industry, that was a real honor.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Harry Potter” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

‘Harry Potter’ Actor Tom Felton Sees Draco Malfoy As ‘Vulnerable’

‘Draco, he’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Felton Photo: MTV News “Harry Potter” star (and recent MTV Movie Awards winner ) Tom Felton has seen his star rise steadily since first gracing the big screen as Draco Malfoy in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Fans have watched the young actor evolve from a one-note bully to a complicated and sometimes vulnerable villain. When MTV News caught up with Felton at the opening of Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park , we asked him about Draco’s growth over the course of the eight films, as well as whether he thinks his character is really all evil. “From my character’s point of view, a lot has been left to interpretation,” Felton said, pinpointing an important-yet-subtle moment from the final film, in which Draco is tasked with the painful decision whether to help or hinder his nemesis’ progress. “[There is] one take where you want to help Harry. The books, I think, kind of left it up to the interpretation of the reader, really, so one way you internally want to help him, the other side where you’re just confused, so I’m intrigued to see which bits David [Yates] cuts out of it.” Regarding Malfoy’s not-so-bad, tortured side, Felton said “Potter” creator J.K. Rowling helped him understand a softer side. “Jo always talked about him as being vulnerable,” Felton said. “Most bullies are. They’re actually hugely insecure and have their own problems, and he has the worst parental guidance of any child I’ve ever seen in my life.” Felton added that when he and Daniel Radcliffe have discussed their characters’ dynamics, they see them as two sides of the same coin. “Harry has these great influences, even though his parents have passed,” Felton said. “Draco, he’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t, really. He’s kind of stuck.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Eclipse’ Fans Swarm Midnight Screenings Across Globe

Theaters from Finland to the Philippines held early screenings of ‘Twilight’ movie. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit The wait ended at midnight, and as MTV News can attest, the lines fans eager to see “Eclipse” snaked around theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Those two metropolises weren’t the only places beset by “Twilight” fervor. Deadline Hollywood reports that theaters in Boston, Washington D.C., Detroit, Cleveland, Denver and Salt Lake City were mobbed at midnight. So too were the theaters holding early screenings in countries like Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Hungary and Finland. At this point, “Eclipse” ranks as the widest domestic release in history as it opens in 4,416 theaters in North America — besting the record set by “Iron Man 2” earlier this year. Four thousand of those theaters held midnight screenings, Deadline reported, and several theater chains also had 3 a.m. screenings to meet public demand. IMAX was expected to hold 3 a.m. screenings in 120 of its theaters. In the run-up to release, fans were also taking precautions against widespread sellouts, as “Eclipse” pre-sales spiked. Fandango reported that the vampire flick accounted for 91 percent of ticket sales on Tuesday, after staying in the site’s top five since the pre-sale started in mid-May. By the end of the weekend, “Eclipse” should have a staggering box-office haul. Early tracking suggests a three-day-weekend gross of as much as $140 million, with a six-day purse of up to $180 million. Those are monster numbers, no doubt, but when you listen to how excited fans are, it’s really not that surprising at all. “I’m really excited,” Oladayo Idowu, told MTV News outside a theater in New York. “I’m here for [the midnight showing], so I’m surprised my mom even let me out! I’ve been waiting for this movie since I saw ‘Twilight.’ I’m going to see it again and again and again.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Daniel Radcliffe Was ‘OK’ With Being A Shorter ‘Harry Potter’

‘As long as Emma and Rupert weren’t shooting up too quickly either,’ star tells MTV News of falling few inches shy of Harry’s height in books. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe and Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News In J.K. Rowling’s universe, Harry Potter isn’t a giant but he’s eventually described as slightly taller than average as the series progresses. So what did the actor who’s become synonymous with the wizard think of playing a character whose proportions don’t quite match his own? Daniel Radcliffe tells MTV News he wasn’t too concerned — but with some conditions. “I didn’t get particularly worried because as long as Emma [Watson] and Rupert [Grint] weren’t shooting up too quickly either, I’d look [fine],” he told us earlier this month at the opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios . “We’d all look relatively [the same height]. It was all going to be OK,” Radcliffe added. Still, Radcliffe admitted he wouldn’t mind adding a few inches to his real-life frame. “I was worried on a personal level because I wanted to be slightly taller than I am, ideally,” he explained. “But I’ve now accepted it. Basically, I’ve came to the conclusion a while ago that you can either be really bitter about it or you can make loads of funny jokes.” What kinds of jokes, we asked. “When I meet people now and they all say, ‘God you’re so much shorter than I expected!’ I always say, ‘No! I’m actually slightly further away than you think,’ ” he smiled, adding, “Which confuses them.” Can you imagine anyone besides Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry? Tell us your thoughts in the comments! Daniel Radcliffe Gives Roller-Coaster Tips At ‘Harry Potter’ Theme Park

Actor names Dragon Challenge as his favorite ride in Universal’s Wizarding World. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on Wednesday Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images Daniel Radcliffe plays the world’s most favorite wizard in the “Harry Potter” movies, but that doesn’t mean he can’t find magic in the real world. At Universal Orlando’s grand opening celebration for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the actor was particularly excited about the park’s signature roller coaster. “The Dragon Challenge roller coaster is a real standout for me,” he told MTV News of the coaster, which is actually a made-over version of an existing ride at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Radcliffe outlined his very specific procedure for riding roller coasters: “Make sure that [the harness is] really tight; you have to try to keep your eyes open and try to come out with the longest prolonged scream, and if all your hair hasn’t gone on one side of your head at the end, you haven’t done it right.” While Radcliffe was entranced by the Dragon Challenge, he was also impressed by the mind-boggling attention to detail of several parts of the Wizarding World. “Me and Rupert [Grint] stood outside Ollivander’s Wand Shop for five minutes this morning thinking we couldn’t go in. We were just impressed by the outside,” he said. But Radcliffe wasn’t as freaked out as he’d have thought about being so immersed in Harry Potter’s world but not on a movie set. “You know what, it’s not even odd. I suppose there was an element of it being odd this morning when I was walking around … [but] it’s amazing. It’s actually fantastic. “When we heard they were doing a ‘Harry Potter’ theme park, it’s one of those things where you think that can go either way,” he added. “In the wrong hands, that would not have been impressive, but these guys have just done the most bang-up, amazing job. The care and love that has gone into this park is equal to what we put into the films, and that’s what makes this very special and authentic.” What other movie or book franchise would you want to see turned into a theme park? London Mayor Still Pissed Over Losing Harry Potter Park

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, hasn’t forgiven Warner Bros. for building its “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” theme park in Orlando, taking to his weekly newspaper column to urge reform in all matters of unholy pagan leisure time. Opening June 18 in Florida, the 20-acre facility is the world’s first dedicated to the boy-wizard institution — and, if Johnson and his angry British constituency have anything to say about it, certainly not the last.
