Weekend Release Roundup: Crowded Indie Field Competes With Dark Shadows

Johnny Depp likely has a lock on the weekend’s new releases with Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows . The movie is set for 3,700 screens. No other new release comes close, but there are nevertheless plenty of other limited roll-outs that may make their way in a theater near you. Check a few of them out in this weekend’s new-release roundup. Dark Shadows (Opening Wide) Director Tim Burton Writers: Seth Grahame-Smith (screenplay), John August & Seth Grahame-Smith (story), Dan Curtis (television series) Cast: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote Comedy/Fantasy/Thriller Distributor: Warner Bros In 1750 parents Joshua and Naomi Collins set sail to start a new life in America from England with their young son Barnabas. There they build a fishing empire in coastal Maine. Two decades later, Barnabas (Johnny Depp) is a rich, powerful playboy with the world at his feet. But things unravel when he falls for Josette DuPress (Bella Heathcote) and breaks the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) – a witch who dooms him to become a vampire and then buries him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is freed from his tomb and emerges in 1972 to meet his descendants. The Cup (Limited Release) Director: Simon Wincer Writers: Simon Wincer, Eric O’Keefe Cast: Bryan Martin, Stephen Curry, Jodi Gordon Drama Distributor: Myriad Pictures The film centers on horse race, the Melbourne Cup, described as a “race that stops a nation.” Held the first Tuesday in November, no other Melbourne Cup had as much significance as the 2002 edition. Australians sought refuge in the race held three weeks after terrorist bombings in Bali killed scores of their countrymen. And a grieving jockey’s courage in the face of his own loss gave Australians a lot more than a race. (Based on a true story). Girl in Progress (Limited Release) Director: Patricia Riggen Writer: Hiram Martinez Cast: Eva Mendes, Cierra Ramirez Comedy/Drama Distributor: Lionsgate, Pantelion Films A single mom, Grace is busy juggling work, bills and a certain Dr. Hartford to give her daughter Ansiedad enough attention. The young girl gets introduced to classic coming-of-age stories by her English teacher and she decides to forget adolescence and get on with life without her mother. While mom is consumed by the affections of her co-worker, Ansiedad gets help from her friend to segue her to ‘adulthood.’ God Bless America (Limited Release) Director: Bobcat Goldthwait Writer: Bobcat Goldthwait Cast: Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr, Mackenzie Brooke Smith Comedy/Thriller Distributor: Magnolia Pictures/Magnet On a mission to rid society of its most repellent citizens, terminally ill Frank makes an unlikely accomplice in 16-year-old Roxy. ” It’s wild and over the top but has a big heart as well,” Magnet releasing exec Matt Cowal commented about the film. “There’s a lot of viewers that are going to have a really good time indulging in their own pet peeves which [director] Bobcat revels in.” Viewers will get a better look at actor Joel Murray said Cowell who noted, “One of the strong aspects of the movie is Joel Murray. He’s a strong actor and I think he’s under-utilized. He’s what gives the film grounded. He gives it heart as he’s on a killing spree.” In Alison Wilmore’s Movieline review of the film , however, she notes: “Goldthwait’s latest effort, an overly bleak film ready to write off the world and go down in a blaze of gunfire, both middle fingers raised.” Nobody Else But You (Limited Release) Director: Gérald Hustache-Mathieu Writers: Gérald Hustache-Mathieu, Juliette Sales Cast: Jean-Paul Rouve, Sophie Quinton, Guillaume Gouix Foreign Distributor: First Run Features The film centers on a crime novelist who travels to the countryside to investigate the mysterious “suicide” of a woman who thought she was the reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe. “It’s not a thriller, but I would describe in in the vein of a Coen Bros. film in that it’s offbeat and clever,” said First Run exec Marc Mauceri. “It’s not rocket science. [The film] harkens back to Marilyn Monroe and [its promotional material] is reminiscent of Marilyn calendars of the ’50s.” Portrait of Wally (Limited Release) Director: Andrew Shea Documentary Distributor: Seventh Art Releasing Director Andrew Shea relays the tortured history of Egon Schiele’s celebrated painting (pictured at top), which was stolen by the Nazis in 1939 and spent more than a decade in legal limbo after it turned up “on loan” to the Museum of Modern Art in 1997. ” Portrait of Wally isn’t just about stolen art,” wrote critic John Anderson in Variety . “It’s about cultural skulduggery, political sleaze, institutional hypocrisy and the virtues of persistence.” Wally recently premiered to a sold-out crowd as a special presentation at the Tribeca Film Festival . The Road (Limited Release) Director: Yam Laranas Writers: Aloy Adlawan, Yam Laranas Foreign/Horror Distributor: Freestyle Releasing A 12 year-old case is re-opened when three teens become missing somewhere on an abandoned road. During the course of the investigation, more and more gruesome stories of abduction and murder are unearthed. And after 20 years, the secret of the haunted road may finally be revealed. Tonight You’re Mine (Limited Release) Tonight You’re Mine Director: David Mackenzie Writers: Thomas Leveritt Cast: Luke Treadaway, Natalia Tena, Mathew Baynton Comedy Distributor: Roadside Attractions (theatrical) Set at Scotland’s music festival “T in the Park,” two feuding rock stars get handcuffed together for 24 hours where they’re supposed to perform. Originally titled You Instead , U.S. distributor Roadside Attractions head Howard Cohen called the film actually a “love story set against the Coachella of Scotland.” Cohen said the film is ripe for both cinephile and music fans in the 20s to 30s range. The film opens in New York and Los Angeles. Where Do We Go Now? (Limited Release) Director: Nadine Labaki Writers: Thomas Bidegain, Nadine Labaki, Jihad Hojeily, Sam Mounier Cast: Claude Baz Moussawbaa, Leyla Hakim, Nadine Labaki Foreign Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics The feature revolves around a group of Lebanese women determined to protect their isolated mine-encircled community from outside forces that threaten to destroy it from within. United by a common cause, the women unite across religious lines against the religious fault lines that have torn apart their society and hatch some inventive and even comical plans to keep the men in their village from tearing along religious lines. “Nadine Labaki is a force of nature,” Sony Classics head Michael Barker said about the film’s director and star. “Women of all ages will adore this film. It’s one of those well-made films that’s also so vastly entertaining.” In her Movieline review , Stephanie Zacherek notes: “…its occasional entertainment value aside, the picture is also blithe to the point of being flimsy.” [Comments and other portions of this article were previously published in Brian Brooks’ weekly specialty preview article on Deadline .]

REVIEW: What If Women Ran the Middle East? Sanctimonious If Entertaining Where Do We Go Now? Has the Answer

It’s dangerous business to begin a movie with a voice-over monologue introducing “a long tale of women dressed in black.” Run, while there’s still time! Yet it’s a testament to director and actress Nadine Labaki’s gracefulness she pulls off this story as well as she does in Where Do We Go Now? , a fable set in a fictional town, presumably in Lebanon, where Christians and Muslims live together in bumptious accord, if not in complete harmony. Actually, the women – those aforementioned creatures dressed in black – get along famously, gathering regularly at the same café for all manner of gossip and chitchat. It’s the men who can’t hold it together: They’re always on the brink of fisticuffs and worse, each group expecting only the worst from the other. Don’t look now, but somebody filled the church holy water fonts with blood – must be the Muslims! Goats and chickens running amok in the mosque? Got to be those pesky Christians! The women are always suffering because of the men: As the movie opens, they stride toward the local cemetery en masse, their procession orchestrated as if it were a Pina Bausch routine, with somber, stiff leg movements and rhythmic breast-beating. The graves – Christians on one side of the burial ground, Muslims on the other – all bear pictures of the women’s lost men, people who have caused them a great deal of sorrow. The problem, as Labaki and her co-writers Jhad Hojeily and Rodney Al Haddad make clear, is that the men just can’t stop fighting. The village also happens to be located in an area riven by violence – it’s surrounded by land mines, which, in an early scene, kill a hapless goat. (The event is played for laughs, not pathos.) Meanwhile, a tentative romance brews between doe-eyed café proprietress Amale (Labaki, a sultry and winning presence) and local handyman Rabih (Julien Farhat), who’s doing some renovation work in her establishment. She’s Christian, he’s Muslim, and their union will be symbolic if it ever gets off the ground. But again, those men! They just won’t listen. The women eventually hatch a plan to keep peace in the village, but tragedy strikes regardless, making their lot even more challenging and wearying. You can see where Labaki is going with all this: If women ruled the world, there’d be no more war. It’s a darling idea, and Labaki does all she can to keep the proceedings entertaining – the picture is dotted with whimsical comedic touches and even includes a smattering of spontaneous Umbrellas of Cherbourg -style musical numbers. It also features an ensemble cast made up largely of nonprofessional actors, and they can be quite charming to watch. For a picture about centuries-old infighting and suffering, Where Do We Go Now? really is pretty cheerful. But its occasional entertainment value aside, the picture is also blithe to the point of being flimsy. This is Labaki’s second feature: The first was the 2007 Caramel , an engaging and visually lush picture set in a Beirut beauty shop, the perfect setting for a very different sort of story about the complications of women’s lives. Caramel is a delightfully fizzy picture, but oddly enough – or perhaps not – it cuts much deeper than Where Do We Go Now? It’s far less sanctimonious, and it defines some of the very real challenges modern women face in the Middle East: Even though its characters feel they’re free to shape their own futures, there are certain restrictions – put in place by men, of course – that threaten to hold them back. One character in Caramel is engaged to be married and has to find a solution to prevent her fiancé from learning that he isn’t her first. You could argue that her plight is nothing compared with massive wars fought on religious grounds. Then again, it’s a man’s pride she’s trying to protect, and she’ll do what it takes to preserve his illusions. Labaki clearly understands the connection between the larger battles and the small ones – it’s just that her ideas come through more subtly and effectively in the beauty-shop movie than in the war-zone movie. She doesn’t need exploding land mines to get her point across. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

The Choice Casts Joe Jonas, Pauly D, The Situation, Rob Kardashian & More!

The Choice, Fox’s new dating show with thematic elements similar to The Voice, has cast a variety of singers, actors, models and reality stars galore. Joe Jonas, Dean Cain, Tyson Beckford, Taylor Hicks, Jersey Shore ‘s Pauly D and The Situation, Rob Kardashian and other dudes will compete for love. The Choice’s female celebrities include Miss USA wild child Rima Fakih, actress Carmen Electra and models Hope Dworaczyk and Sophie Monk. As hinted in The Choice promo , four stars sit in spinning chairs with their backs to a group of non-famous prospective dates, who pitch themselves. Over the course of three rounds, the contestant pool is pared down until each celeb has chosen their date for the evening. Sounds easy enough. Although none of the celebrities on the show bombed with the contestants, Jonas, Cain and Beckford were particularly sought after, apparently. Five of the episodes on the show, which premieres June 7, will feature the male celebrities, while one episode puts women in the power seats. Dear Bossip: My Husband Acts Like A Jerk Toward Me & He’s Told Me To Get An Abortion

Dear Bossip , I truly and extremely enjoy your advice. You’re honest, sometimes brutally honest, but I love and respect that. I’ve been married to my husband for two years. He’s got 3 older kids with his ex. We have one toddler and another on the way. This is the first marriage for both of us. I always dreamed my first marriage would be my only marriage because of my Christian beliefs, but now not so much. To make a long story short, after we found out I was pregnant, he was happy, but then arguments came. In my 1 st trimester he told me to get an abortion during every argument, which was about 7 times. I said very, very ugly things as well (i.e. deadbeat, bum, bish, etc). Then I broke my own cardinal rule after he started putting his phone on vibrate at night and I went through it. I found what I knew would be there, and so I stopped having sex with him and moved out. My final straw is the ex recently got out of jail and we’ve had altercations, and in one argument he stated he’s going back to his real family (they were never married or engaged). She also texts/calls him begging for sex, and for them to get back together. He says he ignores her. I don’t believe him and I don’t feel ignoring certain actions are good enough. I’ve filed for divorce. In the midst of all of this are the apologies from him and the promises to do better, and that he will not maliciously hurt me again. But, as you can see he kept doing it. He says he loves me (eye roll), but I don’t see it. Everyone that I’ve tried to talk to about this says I’m the bad guy and I shouldn’t give up and abandon him. Marriage isn’t good overnight, etc, etc. I do not agree with any of these people and I just want an unbiased opinion and to make sure I’m not crazy. Oh yeah, he also has never helped me with any bills that are mine, and before I stopped letting him use my car he would run out all my gas and only put back $20 worth. I’m no saint, but I have done right by him and I respect my marriage vows. I don’t talk to other men or my exes who still try to keep in contact. My past doesn’t affect him, so why do I have to deal with his? His ex has done/is doing ratchet stuff and it’s too much to name. He says get over it and let’s start over. I forgive him, but I don’t feel like I’m supposed to pretend to forget words that can never be taken back. Please help. – Husband’s A Jerk, Now What Dear Ms. Husband’s A Jerk, Now What , So, you married a man who has 3 other kids from another woman, and, for obvious reasons, they have to remain in communication/contact with one another (I digress), but, she’s asking for more, ANNNNNNNNDDDDDD, you went through his phone and discovered lawd knows what (you didn’t say what you discovered), he’s said to you on numerous occasions that you should abort his child that you are currently carrying, ANNNNNNNDDDDDDDD in an argument he’s said to you that he’s going back to his real family. Hmmmmm, why didn’t you pack his bags and help him move? If he’s so miserable and unhappy with you, and thinks he’s better off with his ex, then let him go. If he wants you to abort your child, and I’m certain it’s because the other 3 he has with his baby momma are kicking his butt in child support, then let him know (this is where you hold up your hand) that he now has 5 kids he’s responsible for. So, take his narrow ass and get a second job, and step up to the plate and take care of his responsibilities. But, let’s reflect on your letter. The issues with your marriage are several things which include miscommunication, disloyalty, mistrust, money, and unresolved issues with his baby momma. And, those key elements make a marriage, and unfortunately I wouldn’t say that you have a marriage. You’re just two people living together, and going through the motions of relationship drama like every other couple. You’re acting like little ass kids with one another and both of you are stomping your feet and pouting trying to get your points across. Instead of communicating with one another, like grown adults do, he’s trying to belittle and demean you with his tactic of spewing hateful things, and you up the ante with your name-calling trying to belittle and demean him. Each of you is trying to outdo the other. And, at the end of the day, what is this proving? What have you two accomplished? Yeah, just as I figured, not a damn thing! This is what I want you to do: Sit down with him and ask him what is a marriage? Ask him to describe it, and what it looks like. And, I want you to do the same thing. Let him know what your idea or thoughts are about marriage, what it looks like, and your expectations. And, it’s imperative that you listen to one another because arguing and trying to prove a point doesn’t work between you two. So, listen and if his definitions, expectations, and outlook on marriage are not your definition, expectations, and outlook, then you will have your answer. But, I want to know why didn’t you two go through marriage counseling before getting married? This would have resolved all of those issues before you walked down the aisle, and I’m quite certain that you wouldn’t have made it down the aisle if your husband hadn’t resolved the issues with his baby momma, his exes that he remains in contact with, and his need to demean and belittle you. So, why are you putting up with it now? Why would allow yourself to be made to feel less than, and from the man who is supposed to make you his queen, his woman that he protects, uplifts, and celebrates? I don’t believe in being with someone who is going to talk negatively about me or to me. That is a no-no! If you feel the need to call me out of my name, talk to me like I’m some damn child, and demean or belittle me, then you can sit there and talk to your own damn fool self. I’m out! DUECES! So, get into some couples therapy and speak with a marriage counselor. The root cause of your marriage is some unresolved issues that neither of you are putting on the table, and one of them happens to be his baby momma. If you don’t want her in your marriage, or your husband communicating with her other than to talk about his kids, then you’ve got to let him handle that with her. You knew what you were getting before you got married. So, that issue should have been resolved from the beginning. Now, he’s got to take care of business and put things in check. You and her are not going to be on the same page, and she definitely is not going to respect you and your marriage. She made that obviously known. So, your husband has got to get his damn balls out of his stomach, and be a man and let her know what’s what! And, hopefully you two can work out the other issues of communication, loyalty, money, and trust through marriage counseling. Don’t be afraid to open up and speak your mind. But, do it lovingly, and with an open heart. Don’t give up so easily on the marriage, not until you’ve exhausted all the resources. Besides, you did state that your first marriage would be your only marriage. Then work it out! – Terrance Dean Hey Bossip Fam, what do you think? Share your opinions and thoughts below! 4 Joss Whedon Stand-bys That Pay Off in The Avengers

The Avengers probably wouldn’t ever find itself compared to The Cabin in the Woods if the two films hadn’t been released within weeks of each other. As it is, moviegoers have had a virtual feast of familiar tics laid before us by writer-director-geek hero Joss Whedon. My Whedon fatigue is well-documented , so I was pleasantly surprised to find some of his schtick to be the best part of The Avengers . It’s not a straight-up assessment of quality — I liked The Cabin in the Woods better overall than The Avengers – but some of Whedon’s usual crutches worked better under the restrictions of the big-budget blockbuster than they did in the small, indie, meta-horror film, where he could let his id run wild. On the Whedonism scale of distracting to effective, here are four familiar tropes that worked well in The Avengers . [Spoilers ahead, and we’ll all have to agree to disagree on Firefly .] 1. The ragtag group of heroes. This was completely out of Whedon’s control, but completely in his wheelhouse. Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse were all ensemble dramas, making Whedon probably the best possible director to take on this studio-mandated supergroup of superheroes. By now he knows how to juggle characters and storylines – and when to let some drop. (Even though I’m not one of the Firefly faithful, I really enjoyed Serenity precisely because of the restrictions it placed on Whedon; he had to wrap up the Firefly series and still tell a coherent, independent story in under two hours, which forced him to strip away a lot of what I found to be self-indulgent or poorly thought-out on the television show.) The Avengers doesn’t try to give equal time to each of the heroes; it might as well be called Iron Man 2.5 . Thor is there to swing his hammer and drop off the villain from his movie, Hawkeye gets brainwashed before we even know him, and Captain America fades into Tony Stark’s straight man. And you know what? Those are good things. The movie’s already over two hours, I don’t really need subplots for most of the dudes who are lining up their own sequels. And by choosing a few of the Avengers to focus on, Whedon made me more invested in what happened to Stark and Black Widow and the Hulk during the course of the movie. 2. The poignant death of the supporting characters. From Tara and Joyce Summers to Wesley and Wash, Whedon’s pretty ruthless about killing off the nice, sweet supporting characters. Poor Agent Coulson never had a chance. Yes, the guy has had a target on his back since his first appearance in Iron Man turned him into a multi-movie flunky, but his actual death in The Avengers was probably the movie’s biggest surprise. Whedon played it very effectively – it was a rare moment of emotion amid the sky-monsters and damaged buildings and Tom Hiddleston’s distracting horned helmet, and I believed in Coulson’s death much more than the movie ever made me believe that Iron Man would actually have to sacrifice himself to save Manhattan. 3. Topping the platonic ideal of the action-movie quip. From Buffy on, Whedon has perfected the sly, self-referential one-liner tossed amid the carnage and choreographed fight scenes. Which is great, if increasingly unremarkable now that most action movies star snarky, Han Solo-wannabes who never let a fight to the death get in the way of their quips. As always, Tony Stark is more than happy to oblige in The Avengers , and gets off some particularly memorable meta-comments about Thor’s “Shakespeare in the Park” superhero garb. But Whedon’s humor worked for me a little bit more here than it did in Cabin in the Woods – it was less distracting, or maybe just more welcome in the face of the tedious Blockbuster Special Effects. I especially liked the visual humor he wrung out of the Hulk, who responds to victory by punching Thor and meets Loki’s threats by banging him around like a piece of pizza dough. A few days after seeing The Avengers , I don’t remember a lot of the dialogue, but I do remember those images. 4. Women who sometimes get to do things. I was not very impressed with the women of Cabin in the Woods , but The Avengers was definitely a step back towards Buffy and Zoe and the other women Whedon allows to be more than onlookers and love interests. True, The Avengers won’t pass the Bechdel test , and poor Cobie Smulders might as well have been wearing an “Exposition Girl” nametag. But Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts makes a big impression in a few minutes of screen time, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow gets to do, especially considering her rather dismal introduction in Iron Man 2 . She gets an action scene or two, she’s shown using her diplomacy and wits to recruit the Hulk and figure out the villain’s plan, and while her loyalty to Hawkeye helps develop her character, she’s not reduced to the anxious girlfriend – in fact, her conversation with Loki cleverly subverts that trope. According to Adam Rogers’ great Whedon profile in Wired , Marvel actually considered dropping Black Widow from the film at one point; Whedon not only fought for her to stay so that the superheroes’ base didn’t turn into a “gay cruise,” he made her into one of his three main protagonists. Which is appreciated by all of us girls who don’t need to ask our boyfriends when The Avengers comes out. For Discussion: Former DNC Chair Says Women And Latinos Are Terrified Of The GOP, Call Michele Bachmann “Ridiculous”

Howard Dean Says Women And Latinos Are Terrified By The GOP Any women here plan on voting for Mitt Romney?? Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean said Sunday that the policies promoted by the Republican Party have women and Latinos “terrified.” “Women are terrified of what the Republicans are talking about. They’re talking about basically stripping away their ability to have insurance pay for their birth control pills,” Dean said on “Face the Nation.” “Latinos are terrified of the Republicans, because they seem to have a total tin ear when it comes to the basic needs of treating people with dignity. “For Michele Bachmann to go on there and claim that women are going to vote for Mitt Romney is perfectly ridiculous,” Dean said, referring to the Republican congresswoman who also appeared on “Face the Nation” Sunday. Dean also suggested that “the average American thinks that Mitt Romney doesn’t care about them. Here’s a guy who’s building, during a campaign, a mansion in Malibu with an elevator for his car,” Dean said to Bob Schieffer. “He had a Swiss bank account and he invests in the Cayman Islands. I don’t think we’ve ever elected a president who has invested in the Cayman Islands as a tax dodge before. “This candidacy is a shipwreck”, Dean said, “and for Michele Bachmann to go on there and claim that woman are going to vote for Mitt Romney is perfectly ridiculous.” Responding to Bachmann’s charge that President Obama will be running on a record of “broken promises,” Dean defended the president, saying he has been successful in both the economy and foreign policy. “I think we’ve made some real progress,” he said. “Osama Bin Laden is dead. We have our troops out of Iraq. Our troops are coming out of Afghanistan. These are things that are important to the United States.” The former governor added: “The fact of the matter is that Barack Obama has created jobs, 4 million of them since he became President. The economy is in much better shape than it was when he took office.” “I think that’s a pretty good record for President Obama to run on.” Thoughts on this?? Sidenote: $MH at “Money” Mitt Romney. He got it all the way poppin!!!! Source

Single Tranny Files: Transgender Woman Ticketed For Using Ladies Room In Texas Hospital [Video]

No wonder Dallas isn’t one of the top ten cities for transgender people . Dallas Police Ticket Transgender Woman For Using Ladies Room A Dallas transgender woman was issued a ticket for using the women’s restroom at an area hospital. Parkland police cited Paula Witherspoon, whose legal name is Paul Witherspoon, for disorderly conduct on April 25. “It was definitely humiliating, degrading,” she said. “I felt like I was being discriminated against.” A Parkland Hospital representative said the hospital received a complaint from a concerned female patient about a man in the women’s restroom. “This is 2012, and I’ve been transitioning since 2006, and I’ve never had a problem until I went to Parkland Hospital,” Witherspoon said. Witherspoon said she doesn’t even remember seeing anyone else in the restroom until she walked out. “There was a lady there that said, ‘That’s a man.’ I just ignored her and kept going,” Witherspoon said. Minutes later, a Parkland officer came over and cited her, she said. Witherspoon said she offered to show the officer a transition letter from her doctor that states, “She is expected to use facilities consistent with her external presentation, which is female.” But Parkland police told her they have to go by what is on her license, Witherspoon said. Under Texas law, Witherspoon must have acted “intentionally or knowingly for a lewd or unlawful purpose” to be cited with disorderly conduct. “I went to the bathroom, took care of my business, washed my hands and left,” Witherspoon said. “I didn’t even see anyone.” Parkland Hospital released the following statement: “Because of the complexity of the issue, the incident is currently under review. Parkland strives to treat patients, visitors and staff with dignity and respect, as well as provide a safe environment at all times.” Anti-discrimination laws in 16 states and the District of Columbia provide protections for transgender and gender non-conforming people, but Texas is not one of them, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union, which is calling for lawmakers in New York to pass legislation that will offer such protections. What do you think? We can imagine being startled to see a trans person in the ladies room but it seems kinda out of line to give her a ticket when she had a note from the doctor! Eff the police yo.
