Rihanna’s recent musical collaboration with Chris Brown has spurred criticism across the media and celebrity spectrum. Reese Witherspoon has even weighed in. The This Means War actress star appeared at the World Conference of Women’s Shelters in Washington, D.C., as part of a partnership with the Avon Foundation. There to raise awareness about domestic violence, the mother of two say she is making sure her kids – Ava, 12, and Deacon, 8 – learn an important lesson. She openly discussed how she actively talks to her two children about domestic violence, and that Chris Brown and Rihanna are part of that conversation. “We talk about domestic violence and what that means,” Witherspoon, 35, said. “Although the concept is somewhat foreign to them, they’re starting to understand that this happens to families in our country and all throughout the world.” She also doesn’t shelter them from the realities of Brown’s assault on Rihanna: “My daughter knows what happened to her. My son knows as well.” “We talk about what is abuse. It’s important to talk to our daughters and our sons at an early age about what’s appropriate and what is absolutely not acceptable.” Judging from mom’s open and mature communication style – not calling anyone out while still not mincing words on a difficult topic – Ava and Deacon are lucky. For the passengers on a recent Atlantic Southeast Airlines flight, an Atlanta based Delta Connection regional carrier, little did they know when they boarded that particular trip to their destination they were witnesses to aviation and Black history. They had boarded the first US airline flight staffed by an all African-American female flight crew comprised of Captain Rachelle Jones, first officer Stephanie Grant and flight attendants Diana Galloway and Robin Rogers. But in a twist, it’s announced that one of four eliminated contestants will be welcomed back next week for the first Top 25. By Adam Graham Ryan Seacrest with the top 24 of “American Idol” Photo: Fox “American Idol” revealed its final 10 semifinalists Thursday (February 23), rounding out the Top 24 that will compete for America’s votes during season 11’s live episodes, which begin next week. The remaining 10 contestants were chosen from the pool of 42 sent to Las Vegas to compete for the chance to perform on the live shows. The first 14 , including Heejun Han ( Heejun Han! ), were unveiled during Wednesday’s episode. Thursday’s show picked up with the cliffhanger from Wednesday, regarding the fate of 27-year-old Adam Brock. The teary-eyed Brock made it, of course; “American Idol” can be cruel (see last week’s brutal “Gotcha!” twist), but it’s not cruel enough to let a contestant hang in the balance for a full day and then not let him through. Especially one with a cute little girl at home. The toughest cut Thursday was the one dealt to Jermaine Jones, the 25-year-old baritone-voiced “gentle giant” who took the news very hard, nearly collapsing in tears. Most shocking was the elimination of David Leathers Jr., the would-be heartthrob nicknamed “Mr. Steal Your Girl” who was thought early on to be one of the contestants to beat, despite the fact that the bow-tied 17-year-old looked like he was 12. But in a shocking final twist — “GOTCHA!” — it was revealed at the end of the episode that either Leathers, Jones, Richie Law or Johnny Keyser will return next week to join the show, making it a Top 25. Fans weigh in on ‘Birthday Cake’ and ‘Turn Up the Music’ remixes and what working together again says about their relationship. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna and Chris Brown in 2008 Photo: WireImage When Chris Brown and Rihanna dropped their remixes of “Birthday Cake” and “Turn Up the Music,” fans immediately began to weigh in on the collaborations and what they mean about the status of Ri and Brown’s highly publicized tumultuous relationship. While the songs may serve as a distraction from their personal past (which includes Brown’s assault of Rihanna in 2009), many of the music fans we caught up with in Times Square stood on two sides of the line. Some were willing to forget the past and enjoy the music for what it is, while others were not yet ready to forgive. “They’re both really good artists. I like Chris Brown a lot. He was down at the bottom during that time and then he came back up,” James Hauser told MTV News. “So he’s starting to do better.” Cassy Cnegt pointed out the negative attention it could bring to both artists, rehashing a personal story line that doesn’t seem to end. “I think there’s going to be a lot of bad publicity about why she’s doing it,” she said. Another fan, Billy Titus, added, “His music’s all right, but I think that she can do a lot better by herself than be with him.” Jean-Yves thinks their collaborations show how far their relationship has come. “The fact that they’re able to work together is a good sign for Chris Brown, as opposed to the animosity that was there before.” However, Aliyyah notes that it’s difficult to separate the music from the events. “Personally, I think it’s a little bit awkward for them in terms of their relationship, because he did hit her and the world knows that, so it kind of sends a weird message to her fans — especially her women fans — to still support him in that way, but I guess it’s not our life,” she said, adding that Brown has built up a “bad boy” reputation and that he may be trying to get Rihanna to take him back. While music fans stand on both sides of the complex issue, one domestic violence expert tells MTV News that seeing these two artists work together again is “not surprising.” “I don’t know what the message [of the songs] is. I would like the message to be: ‘People can change, and I will never be treated that way again and I will never treat anyone that way again.’ If they had released a song saying, ‘This is what this represents for us,’ that would be such a much more fabulous, powerful story than not saying a word,” Rita Smith, the executive director for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said. “The content of the songs seems to be more in-your-face than something about, ‘We’re collaborating on something because we care about the way people treat each other.’ That would have been the message that would have been nice to come out of this very public and tragic incident.” What do you think of Chris Brown and Rihanna’s recent collaborations?
