Next to a beaming young boy and the text, “Black History Month: Proud to honor and celebrate African American history, culture and achievements,” Super Fresh had printed weekly deals for items such as canned collard greens (our tipster: “Not even fresh”), hot sauce, sodas, and Ramen noodles. “Really can’t believe that they printed and distributed this to the public,” she added. Freedom of speech? Roland Martin send some homophobic tweets during the Super Bowl and CNN dropped the hammer. Here’s the word from CNN: “Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.” Martin sent out tweets about smacking any guy that would pose in an underwear ad like David Beckham and made fun of a Patriot that wore a pink jumpsuit. “Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Partnering with True Entertainment, the production company behind The Real Housewives of Atlanta , the network announced that it is working on a project tentatively titled Preacher Wives that will follow the lives of the “First Ladies” of Atlanta churches, reports the Hollywood Reporter . In a statement, True Entertainment president, Steven Weinstock, shared his excitement about this unexpected partnership and also the rationale behind the new series: “We are excited to work with TLC to profile the lives of these strong-willed women. With most praise in religious communities directed towards male preachers, we are thrilled to give these remarkable ladies the spotlight they crave and deserve.” The series will follow the women as they preside over their husbands’ congregations, as well as shadow their private lives and the conflicts that inevitably arise when trying to balance both, reports THR. It should come as no surprise that TLC has decided to jump into the Wives fray. The Real Housewives franchise has proven to be a goldmine for Bravo , with an estimated $35.6 – $162 million generated in ad revenue within the last two years. With the copy-cat success of VH1′s Basketball Wives and Mob Wives, we can probably expect the same cat-fights and shenanigans from Preacher Wives ; only this time, it’s for the Lord. I get it … but it’s also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show.” Now, many months later, Witherspoon sat down with MTV News on Tuesday (January 31) for ” MTV First: This Means War. ” And, during the lengthy chat, she opened up about her speech. “Well, I have a 12-year-old daughter, and I take it all very seriously. I think there’s not a lot of positive images out there for young women, honestly,” she explained. “I don’t know, I just feel like shining the light on the good was an incredible move on MTV’s part and that you don’t have to sell yourself short and objectify yourself in order to be popular or liked or loved. And there’s many different ways to the watering hole and you can maintain you self-respect and still accomplish things. “I don’t watch certain reality shows but there’s ones where people are doing cool, interesting things, like ‘Project Runway.’ But I’m not into women hating on other women or hitting each other or beating the crap out of each other to make money for a bunch of other people,” she continued. “I think that’s not what I want my kids to see.” That feminist stance has made her the go-to role model for a new generation of stars, including Taylor Swift , who cites her as one of her idols. “I think it’s an accumulation of life experiences and hopefully you handle yourself with grace and dignity and life and that’s all you can hope for and hope to pass on to people,” she said of her own role-model status. “And I think [Swift is] just an exemplary young lady,” she added. “It’s kind of interesting to see what a profound songwriter she is. I don’t even think anyone has realized, the long term is going to be the bigger revelation. It’s incredible how quickly she writes songs. The 19-year-old is the latest teen star to appear on the cover of Cosmopolitan, following last month’s issue of the women’s magazine, featuring 17-year-old Dakota Fanning. For her first cover for the magazine, Gomez dons a low-cut, floral-print dress as she looks rather seductively into the camera. She’s sitting with her one leg perched in front of her body, displaying a saucier side of herself than fans might be used to seeing. Inside the issue, she’s talking all about love, opening up about her longtime boyfriend, Justin Bieber. “I’m just like every 19-year-old girl,” she said. “If you’re in love, you’re in love to the fullest, and you just want to go to the movies, hang out, and be as normal as possible. I’m fortunate that I’ve found someone who has that philosophy.” In another Cosmo quote floating around online, Gomez dishes on a past boyfriend (Taylor Lautner? Nick Jonas?) who didn’t make things as easy on her. “I was in a relationship previously where I had to hide everything and it wasn’t my choice. I had to go through different exits and take separate cars and do the craziest things, and it just really wasn’t worth it,” she explained. “It was like a year of my life completely wasted.” The more mature magazine cover comes as Gomez prepares for the next phase of her career . In the coming weeks, she’ll hit the set for her next film, the more adult-themed “Spring Breakers,” which follows a group of college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. When they land in jail, a drug and arms dealer bails them out, and they quickly become entangled with him and his business. “It’s a different character than I have ever played before,” she told MTV News about the film, which will be directed by “Kids” mastermind Harmony Korine. “It’s a different kind of vibe I think than people are used to seeing me in. She’s the wife of Sylvester Stallone. “The producers asked Jennifer Flavin to talk to them about being on the show,” a source close to the show said , supposedly, of the 43-year-old Mrs. Rocky. Flavin and Sly have three kids together, have amassed a huge fortune and live in an enormous mansion in Beverly Hills. So it’s a good fit on the surface. Their neighbors include RHOBH star Adrienne Maloof and husband Paul Nassif, and Lisa Vanderpump reportedly just sold her $19 million home nearby. Taylor Armstrong is reportedly terrified that she’s going to be axed from the hit show, and there is no doubting that Sly’s wife could add her own drama. “Jennifer would be great on the show, she’s married to a super famous guy and she’s friends with a few of the women on the show,” the source said. “She has her own business and she’s really successful all on her own. Plus she’s got a great personality that’s tailor-made for Bravo and reality TV.” Presumably that’s a compliment? MTV News takes a closer look at legislation passed last year in the state that has voter-registration groups up in arms. But according to some longtime voter-registration organizations, that right could be threatened this year in a number of states due to new laws that make signing up new voters more difficult. The issue has come into sharp relief this week in Florida, which holds its presidential primary Tuesday. A bill passed last year in the state includes a number of new rules for how civic organizations can register new voters, as well as ones that reduce the number of early voting days from 14 to eight and prohibit early voting on the Sunday before an election . The part of the new law that has troubled groups such as Rock the Vote and the League of Women Voters the most, though, is the one that forces such third-party organizations to submit voter-registration applications within 48 hours of receiving them, instead of the 10 days as provided by the pervious law. These groups — which are among several who have suspended their voter-registration drives in Florida this year because of a lawsuit over the changes — say the fines and threats of potential civil lawsuits have put a chill on their get-out-the-vote efforts. “We are outraged at these new laws that will prevent opportunities for youth civic participation,” Heather Smith, president of Rock the Vote, said in a statement announcing the lawsuit in early December. Attorneys for the groups claim Florida’s new voter laws violate the U.S. Constitution and federal laws by violating their constitutionally protected rights of speech and association and failing to give individuals and groups fair notice of how to comply with the laws’ “confusing and unclear mandates.” They also argue that the laws breach the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, a federal law designed in part to “encourage community-based voter-registration activity.” Supporters of the law say it will save money by eliminating extra voting days and is a bulwark against voter fraud, which its supporters argue is a constant threat to the democratic process. Some Democrats, however, have accused Republicans — Florida is among the half-dozen states with GOP-led legislatures that passed new voting laws last year — of using the provisions to disenfranchise some traditionally key Democratic voting blocs, including racial minorities, the poor, the young and elderly voters. There were 31 cases of voter fraud referred to Florida authorities between January 2008 and 2011, and only two resulted in arrests out of the 8.1 million votes cast in the 2008 election. A hearing was held in Tampa, Florida, on Friday, led by U.S. Senators Bill Nelson of Florida and Dick Durbin of Illinois, in which the men described the bill as a “voter suppression act” and vowed to have the courts address what Durbin sees as a violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
