Valentine’s Day Showdown: Reese Witherspoon Moved Up, Catherine Zeta-Jones Shipped Direct to DVD

Valentine’s Day is a little less than a month away, and much like you trawling the supermarket for last-minute goodies to romantically rain down on your perennially disappointed significant other, Hollywood has cobbled together not one but two faintly savory last-minute options for the lovers out there. Fox announced late Wednesday that thanks to “outstanding test screenings and strong word of mouth,” it would release the Reese Witherspoon/Tom Hardy/Chris Pine-starring, McG-directed spy-love triangle rom-com This Means War on Feb. 14 proper — a Tuesday, three days ahead of the film’s original Feb. 17 release date. “Starting Valentine’s Day, we’re making WAR, not love,” said distribution boss Bruce Snyder in a statement. “We’re armed and ready with the perfect movie. This is a picture that that has it all – humor, charm, wit and action – and it plays through the roof.” Forsooth! Hath thy loins bestirred? OK, fine. How about this, then: The Catherine Zeta-Jones/Justin Bartha rom-com The Rebound , shot in 2008 at the apex of the whole “cougar” movement. This was the one bankrolled by the defunct studio/distributor The Film Department, on whose shelf it sat domestically for years while doing reasonably well on the international circuit. Now it, too, is under the Fox label, but straight to video, alas. So what could keep a Catherine Zeta-Jones rom-com in limbo all these years? Was No Reservations so bad? What’s it all about? Here’s Fox’s sell (via press release): Upon discovering her husband’s infidelity, Sandy (Zeta-Jones) and her two kids move from the suburbs to pursue a new life in the big city. There she meets Aram (Bartha), a local coffee shop employee whose wife only married him as a means to getting her green card. The two strike up a friendship which eventually evolves into something more. But it isn’t long before they’re faced with the big question – “Is this real or just a rebound?” Arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day and featuring electrifying chemistry between Zeta-Jones and Bartha, The Rebound also features fantastic supporting performances from Lynn Whitfield ( The Women, Madea’s Family Reunion ), John Schneider ( The Dukes of Hazzard, Lake Placid 2 ) and music legend Art Garfunkel. AHEM. John Schneider and Art Garfunkel? Hardy and Pine don’t stand a chance! Neither do you! Just break up already, seriously.

Reunited And It Feels So…Ruff: DMX, Eve, And Swizzy Are All On Board To Ryde Through Hip-Hop Once Again!!

It’s showtime!!! According to TMZ reports : It’s official … DMX and his legendary rap crew Ruff Ryders are getting back together — in fact, X tells TMZ, a blowout reunion tour is already in the works. Ruff Ryders first lady Eve told us this weekend to expect a massive comeback — but X says the RR reunion is already underway … with CEO Waah Dean currently booking several venues across the country. The tour is supposed to kick off in a few months — and X tells us, the entire crew’s already on board, including Swizz Beats, Drag-On, and Murda-Mook. According to DMX, Eve and The L.O.X. haven’t signed on yet — but that’s just because he hasn’t gotten in touch with them yet. X insists, that will change very soon. X tells us, “We are all family and we’re going to come back stronger than when we left … It’s going to take the nation by storm.” The Ruff Ryders movement was one of the most exciting things hip-hop has ever seen, and although it might be a bit late for a comeback, we’re in full support of anything that will make Earl some money and keep him out of jail. When The Checks Stop Coming In… Kodak Files Bankruptcy Because They Are $7 Billi In The Hole!!!

Damn shame that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and not dollars ! Eastman Kodak Co. filed for bankruptcy protection early Thursday morning, after the film pioneer failed to raise fresh cash to fund a long-sputtering turnaround, The Wall Street Journal reported. The 131-year-old company struggled for decades to cope with the emergence of competitors in its film business and the rise of digital technology. But its final pivot — an attempt to transform itself into a company selling printers — proved too costly amid declining film sales and expensive obligations to its retirees. The company said in a statement it has obtained “a fully-committed, $950 million debtor-in-possession credit facility with an 18-month maturity from Citigroup to enhance liquidity and working capital.” It said it believes it has “sufficient liquidity” to continue business operations during Chapter 11. “Kodak is taking a significant step toward enabling our enterprise to complete its transformation,” Kodak CEO Antonio Perez said in a statement. “Chapter 11 gives us the best opportunities to maximize the value in two critical parts of our technology portfolio: our digital capture patents … and our breakthrough printing and deposition technologies, which give Kodak a competitive advantage in our growing digital businesses.” Perez pointed out the fact that the company has effectively moved away from its traditional film operations, “closing 13 manufacturing plants and 130 processing labs, and reducing our workforce by 47,000 since 2003.” “Now we must complete the transformation by further addressing our cost structure and effectively monetizing non-core IP assets,” he said. “We look forward to working with our stakeholders to emerge a lean, world-class, digital imaging and materials science company.” The statement said that the Rochester-based company expects to pay employee wages and benefits and continue customer programs. Subsidiaries of the company outside the US will not be affected by the bankruptcy filing. The voluntary petitions for Chapter 11 business reorganization were filed in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The filing came as little surprise, with The Wall Street Journal reporting ahead of the announcement that the company was appointing a chief restructuring officer in anticipation of bankruptcy. Shares of Kodak ended Wednesday trading up 4.4 percent at 55 cents, but have fallen 14.6 percent during January, and almost 90 percent over the past 12 months, according to Fact Set data, MarketWatch reported. Eastman Kodak last week unveiled a new, streamlined business structure aimed at increasing productivity, cutting costs and boosting the troubled company’s digital business. Under the new structure, Kodak reduced its number of segments from three to two — the Commercial Segment and Consumer Segment. Kodak previously had three operating units: the graphic communications group, which provided digital equipment and software to printing industries; the consumer digital imaging group, which focused on print images; and film, photofinishing and entertainment. Kodak listed assets of $5.1 billion and debt of $6.8 billion in the bankruptcy filing. We hope they’re able to recover. It would be a shame to lose a pioneering company like Kodak. POTUS Speaks His Piece To SOPA/PIPA Supporters: “Eff That Isht!!!”

Victory…kinda… The growing anti-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) support that has swept through the gaming and Internet community found a very big ally today. With websites like Reddit and Wikipedia and gaming organizations like Major League Gaming prepared for a blackout on January 18th – the same day that the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HR 3261was scheduled in Washington, DC – President Barack Obama has stepped in and said he would not support the bill. SOPA has been delayed, for now. The House has agreed to revisit the issue next month, but they now know the White House will veto any bill that’s not more narrowly focused. Much to the chagrin of Hollywood, the Entertainment Software Association (which has been a backer of the bill from early on), and Internet domain company GoDaddy.com (which lost many accounts as a result of its support for the bill); SOPA has been shelved. The Motion Picture Association of America, one of the bill’s largest sponsors, is expected to regroup. The White House released an official statement regarding the controversial matter, that reads in part: “Any provision covering Internet intermediaries such as online advertising networks, payment processors, or search engines must be transparent and designed to prevent overly broad private rights of action that could encourage unjustified litigation that could discourage startup businesses and innovative firms from growing,” said The White House. “We expect and encourage all private parties, including both content creators and Internet platform providers working together, to adopt voluntary measures and best practices to reduce online piracy.” SOPA is severely wounded, but far from dead. Just like piracy itself, this debate isn’t over. Expect more bills to move forward, although the wording in future legislation is expected to be more narrowly focused in an attempt to appease the current administration. But given the current economic climate and the upcoming Presidential election, there could be a different administration entering The White House soon, changing the landscape for these types of bills. Bottom line is, to protect these here internets we need to make sure we all VOTE! You already know what types of folks (Republicans) will be goin’ hard to make sure that some form of this bill passes and further restricts the free information sharing that we all use and depend on every single day. PETA Take The Wheel: 128 Dogs Found Starving And Emaciated In The Back Of A U-Haul Truck

Those poor dogs: Authorities in West Tennessee arrested two women when they discovered 128 live dogs, one dead dog and a live cat inside a U-Haul truck during a traffic stop on Interstate 40, WSMV-TV reports. The Commercial-Appeal in Memphis reports that the dogs were hungry, thirsty and living in squalor, without ventilation. The newspaper reported that the arrested women were associated with Hearts for Hounds, a dog rescue organization. By Tuesday afternoon, the women — Bonnie Sheehan, 55, and a passenger, Pamela A. King-McCracken, 59, both of the Long Beach, Calif., area — each faced 128 counts of aggravated animal cruelty, a Class E felony, and were jailed on $100,000 bond each in Fayette County. Officials at the scene said the women were driving from California to Virginia. A check of the website for Hearts for Hounds showed they were relocating from Long Beach to Virginia. Sheehan is shown as the organization’s founder. Source

Ben Flajnik on Shawntel Newton: Hot Girl, Bad Timing!

Wow. That’s what many viewers are saying after last night’s Bachelor episode in which Shawntel Newton , from Brad Womack’s season, entered the game unexpectedly. Ben Flajnik, the star of this season, was caught at the center of the “$h!t storm” last night, and reacted similarly by the big twist designed to rile up the women. In a new blog post , he explains why he sent Shawntel packing: “So I have heard from everyone that makes this show happen that this was truly the craziest cocktail party and rose ceremony in Bachelor history,” he writes. “Having only seen one other season, I would have to agree. Wow. Nothing in my life would have ever prepared me for the $h!tstorm that happened that night.” “After watching, I didn’t realize that the women were so mean to Shawntel and I was a bit taken aback,” Ben reflects in the understatement of the year. “I mean I knew it was a bold move on Shawntel’s part, but some of the women took it a bit too far.” “Shawntel and I had chatted a few times in between seasons and I thought she was an interesting, beautiful woman. She was right to assume there was a connection.” “There was, but the timing was wrong. So, you can imagine how surprised I was when she showed up to the cocktail party unannounced.” “I knew if I kept Shawntel around I would lose all the credibility I had built with these women and it wouldn’t be easy to dig myself out of that hole.” “Let’s put it this way – if Shawntel had started the journey with the rest of the women it might have been different. But I was already so happy with the group of women I had. I wasn’t about to jeopardize the rest of my experience in trying to find love.” “I do want to thank Shawntel though for coming. She gave up a lot to try this and I really respect her for it.”

How Do You Say ‘Green Lantern’ in Russian?

Now here’s a trend I can get behind: “[U]p to December, there hadn’t been a single Russian film in the top 20. The film expected to create a bombastic box-office crater -– war epic Burnt By the Sun 2 , at $40m the country’s most expensive production ever –- fizzled out embarrassingly when part two was released in May. A few years ago, Russians learned to stop worrying and love the blockbuster as they began producing SFX-laden spectaculars like Night Watch ; now they’re learning about the flipside -– the car-crash pleasures of rubbernecking a box-office flop.” [ The Guardian ]
