Occasionally, a movie is more interesting for where it doesn’t go than for where it does. Oren Moverman’s Rampart , starring Woody Harrelson as a disgraced (and obviously dirty) LAPD cop, is one of those pictures. It’s more of a character study than a conventionally shaped drama — I was taken aback when the end credits started rolling, momentarily left with that “Is that all there is?” feeling. But the more I thought about it, the more it seemed that the movie ended in just the right place, taking us as far as we can go with this loose-cannon cop before he’s left to face his own isolation. Once we, the audience, part ways with him, he’s truly on his own.
All signs were pointing to this in recent days, and now it’s official: Lionsgate has sent word that it will host regional sneak preview screenings of its epic, gritty MMA /family drama Warrior this weekend nationwide. Obviously that’s nothing new in the grand scheme of release strategies, but what makes this special is the endgame: Oscar night.
A hyper-stylized, genre-mashing fantasy actioner involving cowboys, samurai, and an axe-wielding Ron Perlman with dreadlocks isn’t exactly what you might have imagined in a film with a title like Bunraku , named for an obscure, 300-year-old form of Japanese puppet theater rarely performed these days. But that’s the film director Guy Moshe made — starring Josh Hartnett , Demi Moore , Woody Harrelson ( Indecent Proposal reunion!), and Kevin McKidd as a dapper, Fred Astaire-like cold-blooded killer, no less — and you’ve got to give him credit for his ballsy vision.
There’s good news about bad news about the following red band highlight reel from Friends with Benefits . The good news? It’s funny! The bad news? It seems to spoil a lot of previously unspoiled hilarity — like what Emma Stone thinks would be preferable to missing John Mayer perform “Your Body Is a Wonderland” in concert. So, consider yourself warned, and click through to watch the filthy new clip. If you dare, etc.
Mante ‘M-Bone’ Talbert’s family has invited public to pay respects at May 27 service. By Rob Markman M-Bone Photo: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images The death of Cali Swag District member M-Bone has not only affected the dancer’s family and friends, but the hip-hop community as well. In light of the overwhelming response to his untimely death, the family of the CSD artist (born Mante Talbert) has decided to open up his funeral to the public. “There has been a tremendous outreach of concern and the family would like to have the funeral open to the public and fans that would like to support,” Cali Swag’s publicist said in a statement released on Friday (May 20). For fans wanting to attend, services will take place on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. PT at Faithful Central on 333 W. Florence Avenue in Inglewood, California. On May 15, at approximately 10:30 p.m. PT, 22-year old M-Bone was shot twice in the head while sitting in his car on La Brea Avenue in Inglewood. Despite reports that Talbert was killed by a neighbor who was jealous of his success, police still have no clear-cut motive and no arrest has been made, according to an Inglewood homicide detective who spoke to MTV News on Friday. Bone was one of four Cali Swag District members, and the group rose to fame with their 2010 platinum single “Teach Me How to Dougie.” CSD collaborators Jermaine Dupri, Red Caf
Actress tells MTV News she imagines an awkward introduction with fellow book-to-movie heroine would begin with, ‘Books! Who knew?’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News For those who keep tabs on the world of best-selling young adult fiction and the big-screen adaptations that accompany them as we do, the most exciting story to come out of that world recently is the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian mega-hit, “The Hunger Games.” Naturally the biggest news was the announcement that Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence had won the highly coveted role of Katniss Everdeen , followed by casting news of key characters Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), then Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinkett and later, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy. MTV News was lucky enough to score a few minutes with Lawrence recently to talk all about her exciting upcoming projects, including “The Hunger Games” and “X-Men: First Class.” While discussing the huge fan-following behind the “Games” trilogy, the topic of comparisons to another popular book series-turned-box-office dominator, “Twilight,” and its leading lady, Kristen Stewart, came up. Given that “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” have a few similarities, we asked Lawrence if she’s spoken to Stewart about the experience, or if she’d want to commiserate in any way about starring in hugely popular book-to-movie franchises. “No, I haven’t spoken to her,” Lawrence said, and then playfully acted out a little pantomime scene of what might happen if and when the two ever do meet. To do so, Lawrence used a series of incomprehensible grunts and gestures that could be loosely translated as, “Hi, how are you? You’re in those movies. You are, too. Cool.” “I don’t really know what we’d say,” Lawrence admitted. “[We’d] just be like [gestures to an invisible book in her hand], ‘Books! Who knew?’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . How effective is horror, a genre defined by tricky edits and Neve Campbell’s harried grimace, when its thrills are conveyed in one continuous shot? Gustavo Hernández’s 2010 Cannes selection The Silent House — which comes out in the UK this April — wants to answer that. In the new trailer (which, counterintuitively, is a patchwork of quick cuts) young actress Florencia Colucci tries to flee an ominous house in rural Uruguay, but some dark-ass force has her number.
