5 Broken Cameras won Outstanding Feature at the 6th annual Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking Wednesday night during a ceremony at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens. Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore accepted the prize for co-directors Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi whose film centers on Israeli settlements encroaching on Burnat’s Palestinian village. Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s Detropia , meanwhile won two prizes – the only one to do so of the evening – including Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Original Score for “Dial.81.” “I personally feel it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of artistic cinema,” Michael Moore commented about 5 Broken Cameras . “You don’t see this on the evening news. You don’t see Palestinians portrayed this way.” Lee Hirsch’s Bully received the Cinema Eye Audience Choice Prize chosen from 4,500 votes cast online and via Twitter. This year’s Legacy Award was presented to the 1993 verite classic The War Room , which took viewers behind the scenes of the 1992 Bill Clinton campaign. The Legacy Award is “intended to honor classic films that inspire a new generation of filmmakers and embody the Cinema Eye mission: excellence in creative and artistic achievements in nonfiction films,” according to organizers. Whatever your Oscar nomination predictions were, you were wrong: This morning’s Academy Awards announcements by host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone jolted Oscarwatchers awake with surprises and snubs so shocking they made everyone forget within minutes that MacFarlane made a Hitler joke, live, before six in the morning, setting the tone for his upcoming hosting gig. From all the Beasts of the Southern Wild love to the freezing out of shoo-ins Kathryn Bigelow ( Zero Dark Thirty ), Ben Affleck ( Argo ), and Tom Hooper ( Les Miserables ) from the Best Director race, which were the biggest shocks of the morning? [ Get the full list of 2013 Oscar nominees ] WTF, BEST DIRECTOR RACE? It was the most unexpected category of the bunch: Major snubs for Bigelow, Affleck, and Hooper shake up the Best Picture race, and the confidences of Oscar prognosticators everywhere. With Steven Spielberg ( Lincoln ), Ang Lee ( Life of Pi ), and David O. Russell ( Silver Linings Playbook ) competing against Michael Haneke ( Amour ) and Zeitlin ( Beasts of the Southern Wild ) the temperature of the Best Pic/Best Director races changes drastically. I was so sure the Academy would get suckered in by Hooper’s uber close-ups that the fact that he wasn’t nominated makes me think Oscar voters aren’t such easy lays after all… WHERE’S LEO? Christoph Waltz’s Best Supporting nod for Django Unchained (which scored fewer nominations than expected/hoped) pushed cast mate Leonardo DiCaprio out despite his Golden Globes nod. JOHN HAWKES IN THE SESSIONS It’s too bad the great John Hawkes wasn’t recognized for his work as a paraplegic poet in the underseen The Sessions , because it’s some of the best acting of the year. MARION COTILLARD IN RUST AND BONE Guess two French ladies in the Best Actress race was two too many. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay) Who knew the Academy had so much love for Benh Zeitlin’s little Sundance darling? Quvenzhané Wallis becomes the youngest Best Actress nominee in Oscars history — vying against Amour ‘s Emmanuelle Riva, the oldest — but who out there actually predicted Zeitlin would get a coveted Best Director nod while so many front-runners were left out in the cold? And while we’re on the subject of Beasts star Wallis: How great is it that the Oscar-watching world will soon know how to pronounce “Quvenzhané?” I can already see MacFarlane’s telecast writing staff furiously scribbling their “Uma-Oprah”-esque gags. ZERO DARK OSCARS Critics and pundits had Bigelow’s bin Laden pic riding high as an Oscar hopeful before this morning, but even with Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay nods the Bigelow snub puts ZDT ‘s potency into question. Did the torture controversy and assorted Congressional hullabaloos dampen the film’s buzz, or did its dispassionate mood leave voters a bit cold? SKYFALL FOR BEST SCORE Methinks Academy members confused Adele’s fantastic Skyfall theme song with the Bond pic’s score, because one stuck to my bones and the other, well, did not. These folks clearly saw Beasts of the Southern Wild , which boasted one of the best original scores of the year but didn’t earn a musical nod. OH, AND ALSO THE SIMPSONS GOT AN OSCAR NOMINATION “Maggie Simpson attends the Ayn Rand Daycare Center, where she finds a caterpillar and faces off against her nemesis.” Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare will compete in the Animated Shorts race vs. Disney’s Paperman , among others. Were you shocked and awed by the Academy’s surprise moves? Chime in below with your reactions! It’s a good morning for Harvey Weinstein , Fox and Sony Pictures Classics . Sifting through the more surprising-than-usual list of Academy nominations , these are the three big winners of the fierce behind-the-scenes campaigning that movie studios, their specialty divisions (and their consultants) do to get their pictures, directors, actors, etc. onto the hallowed Oscars short list. The Weinstein Company has the enviable dilemma of now having to decide how to run two Best Picture campaigns for Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained. It also managed to get Joaquin Phoenix a Best Actor nomination for The Master despite Phoenix’s slagging of the Oscars as the “stupidest thing in the world” and the picture’s quick fade as a contender in the awards buzz circus. David O. Russell’s nomination, after being passed over by the Director’s Guild , is another sign of TWC’s political muscle, particularly since the Silver Linings Playbook director is an outsider in Hollywood — like Weinstein and Phoenix, for that matter. (Okay, so Weinstein may be way more inside than he was in the Miramax days, but he’s still an outsider. Fox employee and this year’s Oscars host Seth MacFarlane made that clear earlier this morning, when referring to the Best Supporting Actress nominees, he cracked: “Congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein.”) Fox and Sony also did well in the Best Picture category: Fox 2000 has Life of Pi and Fox Searchlight has Beasts of the Southern Wild in the top category, but Sony is the more interesting story here. While the Annapurna-produced Columbia Pictures-distributed Zero Dark Thirty was nominated for Best Picture as expected, director Kathryn Bigelow’s omission in the Best Director category goes down as one of the biggest snubs of this morning. On the other hand, the nominations of Sony Pictures Classics’ Amour in the Best Picture and Best Foreign Picture categories and Michael Haneke for Best Director is quite a coup for the mini major given the competition this year and the film’s difficult subject matter. In other words, Haneke’s gain is related to Bigelow’s loss. Thoughts? Leave them in the comments section. To THG, it feels like 2008 all over again. To the United Kingdom, most of which had no idea who the hell Heidi Montag was until she showed up on Celebrity Big Brother … it just feels like 2013. In any case, Spencer Pratt ‘s wife is up to her old tricks on the hit show, flaunting her hilariously fake boobs and talking about plastic surgery. See clip below: Heidi Montag, Boobs on Celebrity Big Brother Yes. Speidi, the gruesome twosome who dominated fake news for so long here in the U.S., currently reside in the Celebrity Big Brother house. Sorry, UK. It’s been quite a run for the married couple, to say the least, and on a recent installment, Heidi Montag opened up about some of her many regrets. “I kinda wish I never talked about it and wish I didn’t make it so public,” a bikini-clad Montag told co-star Rylan Clark in the hot tub, re: her plastic surgery. “I didn’t realize I would be a surgery girl for the rest of my life … I just thought everybody did it and didn’t want to be a liar. It’s really kind of backfired.” Heidi famously had 10 plastic surgeries in one day in 2010, getting a nose job, liposuction, breast and butt augmentation, a chin reduction, and so on. She’s barely recognizable from The Hills Season 1 as a result. Speaking of, she also opened up about “pretending” to be a “character” on MTV’s less-than-real reality show that made her a D-list star for years. Anyway, it’s great to have Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt back on our radar, isn’t it THGers? Hello? [crickets] Anyone? [crickets] HEY! [crickets]
Beyonce will sing at the upcoming Obama Inauguration . That’s quite the honor for this star. And the singer also covers the latest issue of GQ . That’s quite a pleasure for warm-blooded males around the planet! Looking positively stunning and slim just over one year since giving birth to Blue Ivy Carter , Beyonce is wearing next to nothing on the cover of this national magazine. The issue celebrates The 100 Sexiest Women of the 21st Century and it appears to have all attractive bases covered, from Kate Upton to Megan Fox to Mila Kunis. GQ , meanwhile, promises “better (and hotter)” Beyonce pictures next Tuesday when it releases the full interview and spread. We’re not sure how that’s possible.
Weight Watchers spokesperson Jessica Simpson doesn’t plan on following the diet plan during her second pregnancy, but she reportedly hired a Weight Watchers chef. Supposedly, this person prepares WW-sanctioned recipes and portions for the star, who’s raking in millions pitching the popular diet plan … which she can’t be on right now. There’s just one problem with the chef story. No such people exist. “Weight Watchers doesn’t have chefs nor does Weight Watchers provide chefs to any of our members including celebrity ambassadors,” a Weight Watchers rep says . In other words, a report by celeb gossip magazine Life & Style stating the soon-to-be mother-of-two hired a WW chef to shepherd her through pregnancy #2 was totally bogus. In actual celebrity weight loss news, Jess tells Weight Watchers magazine: “I’m crazy about smoothies, so I bring fruit chopped up and ready to go.” “That way I can sip the same smoothie all morning long between takes … if it thins out, I just put it back in the blender with crushed ice for a few minutes.” Who needs a chef with a genius plan like that in the offing?
The University of Texas women’s track coach who resigned recently has spoken out about the incident, and she’s not very happy. In her words she felt “ratted out” or discriminated against because she’s a black disabled woman. According to CNN: The University of Texas women’s track coach who resigned under fire after the disclosure of an affair with a female student a decade ago doesn’t understand why she was targeted for punishment and questions whether she’s being treated fairly. “Is it because I have a disability? Is it because I’m black? Is it because I’m female? Is it because I’m successful? Is it now because of my sexual preference?” Coach Bev Kearney asked on CNN’s “Starting Point” Tuesday. “I had to finally come to embrace not knowing why, and I had to embrace it because the more you try to figure out why, the harder it is to forgive.” A head coach at Texas since 1993, Kearney is held in great esteem in the track world. She led the Longhorns to six national titles and was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007. She is widely admired for her gritty resolve to walk again after she was partially paralyzed in an auto accident. But things turned south for Kearney last year when the university learned of an affair in 2002 with a female student. The revelation came at just about the same time Kearney was discussing a pay raise and a contract extension. When asked by CNN’s Soledad O’Brien whether people around her and maybe even her former lover, a one-time student, now age 30, “ratted her out,” Kearney said, “that’s fair.” The affair began in August 2002, which is not long after the university put a policy into its handbook about consensual relationships between staff members and students. Kearney said she never really thought about the relationship from a legal perspective. “You know, you get caught up in the emotional and the physical components of a relationship, and the last thing you’re doing is thinking rationally,” she said. In an e-mail to CNN on Sunday, Patti Ohlendorf, head of the university’s legal affairs department, said: “In Intercollegiate Athletics and the coaching profession, it is unprofessional and unacceptable for a head coach to carry on an intimate relationship with a student-athlete that he or she is coaching. We told Coach Kearney and Mr. Howard that such a relationship crosses the line of trust placed in the head coach for all aspects of the athletic program and the best interests of the student-athletes in the program.” Ohlendorf denied Sunday that gender played a role in the university’s review and said she knows of no other “UT head coach who has entered into such a relationship with a student-athlete on his or her team.” Kearney said “everyone should deserve an opportunity to have fair treatment based upon your policies, whether something is morally acceptable to an individual or not, our law says it’s about the application of the law, and then at some point, there ought to be some form of consideration for that person’s past history, they didn’t find a prior relationship or a subsequent relationship.” Thoughts?? Sergio Romo, the closer for this year’s World Champion San Francisco Giants, was detained on New Year’s Day after causing a scene at the Las Vegas airport. Insiders confide to TMZ that problems arose after Romo failed to produce proper identification and could not be cleared by security. From there, the “angry and aggressive” relief pitcher was cuffed by police after he got into an argument with a TSA agent. Romo, who was not permitted to board a flight that day, was taken to the police station and released after receiving a citation. You won’t believe this, but witnesses say the hurler was drunk. In other Romo news, some moron blew up a washing machine this week with Tony Romo’s jersey draped over it.
Months after Teen Mom 2’s Kailyn Lowry and Javi Marroquin quietly tied the knot without anyone knowing, a photo from the reality star’s wedding has surfaced at last. Here she is in the new issue of In Touch: The 20-year-old mother of three-year-old Isaac and her new hubby are seen standing next to an SUV with the words ” Just Married !” on its back window. Kailyn Lowry, in a white minidress, and Javi Marroquin announced their engagement via Twitter Sept. 15, saying, “Thank you all for being so supportive.” “No concrete wedding plans yet, but hopefully in the near future.” Apparently the near future was very near, indeed. The couple went on to quickly wed in a small ceremony at a Pennsylvania courthouse that same month. What was the reason for fast-tracking it? “They wanted to get married before Javi left for the Air Force,” Lowry’s friend Toni Ziegler told the mag, noting that Lowry is planning a big wedding for the fall. Emphasis on big. “Javi has a huge family. He has seven groomsmen picked out!” Congrats you kids.
I’m Maryam from Montreal, Canada. Before telling you guys about my experience, I just wanted to say how much I love this tumblr. I’ve been reading stories since 2010, and I always knew that one day it would be my turn to share my moment with Justin. All these stories gave me hope, I actually never gave up, and here I am now telling you my experience. It’s crazy. I tried so many times to convince my parents to fly me to New York for the launch of Someday, or to fly me to Toronto for the MMVAs. I entered thousands of contests, but nothing ever happened. I saw Justin in concert in 2010, so I knew I was lucky enough. I was trying my best to be positive, but sometimes I wondered if I was dreaming the impossible: meeting Justin. It was May 23rd and Justin was about to announce his new tour dates! I was so excited because it had been a long time since he came to my city. When I saw that he was coming back on November 26th 2012, I freaked out! My mom let me skip school to buy tickets on pre-sale. I had been saving up money for his new tour since March 2011, and I was more than happy to finally make my dream come true, by buying meet & greets. That was probably the most stressful moment of my life! I knew I could get them, but there was still a little part of me saying “It might not happen, they might be gone in a second.” I ended up getting them at 12:05 p.m. I cried my eyes out! Was I really going to meet my idol, after 3 years of waiting, and see him live for the 2nd time, first row?! After this, 6 LONG months passed by, I was counting down the days ‘till I could take a picture with my boy. Finally November 26th arrived. I couldn’t sleep the night before the concert, I was so nervous, stressed and shocked. Around 4 p.m we checked in, and they gave us our wristbands and tickets for the show. I started freaking out. My dream was about to come true soon. While we were waiting for the meet & greets to start, we saw Kenny, Justin’s grandparents and Dan! It was great to finally see the crew, the ones that work as hard as Justin, and help him stay true to himself. The line finally started to move. I was nervous as hell. I kept asking my mom and my friend if this was real life, if Justin was really a couple feet away from me. Then, when the security said “next group” to us, I took a deep breath and walked behind the curtains. Justin was there smiling at someone, looking flawless. I stayed there like an idiot, admiring his figure. I honestly didn’t recognize him, cause he was wearing those big glasses. He felt so unreal, I was literally speechless. I found my words and said, “Hey Justin.” He turned around, smiled at me saying “Hey” with his sexy deep voice. I smiled back and went next to him for the picture. When he wrapped his arm around my waist, I was like *Holy shit, Justin Bieber is actually touching me right now,* but I just acted like this was a casual/typical thing. After they took the picture, I turned my head to face Justin and asked him for a hug. He said, “Sure.” While hugging him I said, “I love you.” When the meet & greets were over, I freaked out, I kept screaming and jumping everywhere. It’s definitely a moment I’ll never forget. During the concert I saw Pattie, Jeremy, Jazmyn, Jaxon and Kenny! Being able to see him first row was special, I could see every detail, it was perfect. We were so loud, Justin seemed speechless and happy, he even talked French. During the show, he threw a bottle off the stage, and this girl picked it up. I was spazzing and I had to drink it, I mean Justin Drew Bieber had his lips there. So that’s what I did. I honestly went crazy. After that concert I entered the BieberFever contest to win a meet & greet at Justin’s show in Toronto. My mom told me that if i won it, she would take me to Toronto right away, without hesitation. She said that, only cause she thought I wouldn’t win. On Friday November 30th, I got a message from BieberFever saying that I had won! I started screaming, jumping, thanking God, kissing my family and crying even more. My mom couldn’t believe it, she asked me to read the email over and over again to be sure. When she finally realized this was true, she said, “Oh shit, now I have to take you there.” We arrived at the Rogers Centre in Toronto around 2 p.m. on December 1st. There were a lot of fans waiting for Justin, singing his songs and stuff. I was nervous, because I didn’t have tickets for the show. I was afraid they wouldn’t let me in the meet & greets. My mom and I had this sign, we were ready to wave it around the stadium to get a pair of tickets. The sign said: WE DROVE 7 HOURS FOR JUSTIN’. There wasn’t anyone from Justin’s crew, just fans. After, we walked by the box office and we looked for tickets. Even if they were section 500, I didn’t care, but we managed to buy a pair of tickets in section 123 row A! Then I saw Jon Chu, surrounded by fans and cameras. They were actually taping some stuff for the movie! My mom waved our sign, and this woman walked too us to interview me. I was in shock. Too much was happening in such a little amount of time. Just the thought of maybe being in the movie was so exciting for me! We finally got in line for the meet & greet. We saw Justin’s grandparents who walked by, followed by Pattie. I screamed “PATTIE!” and she turned around and I waved at her with a big smile, she did the same to me. She’s honestly so damn flawless and sweet! Finally my group was next. I turned around to see Alfredo, whom I haven’t seen in Montreal. I could see Justin behind the curtains, he looked happy, tired, and beautiful at the same time. When it was our turn, I went next to Justin and said “Hi.” He looked at me and said, “Heyyy hey hey.” I wrapped my arm around him, and he wrapped his around mine. The people in my group were taking hours to place themselves, so me and Justin literally stayed a few seconds holding each other around our waists. I looked at him and he had that big smile on his face, I was dying inside. I could have talked to him, but I was busy contemplating his face. When me and my mom got out of the meet & greets, Alfredo was still there with his camera. My mom told me to go and say something to him, cause she knows how much I love him. I told him I came all the way from Montreal to see Justin, he really seemed amazed. I had a little conversation with him and my mom. He is so caring and cute. I totally understand why him and Justin are so close, he’s a great guy. My mom kept fangirling cause Justin touched her hand. It was kind of funny, I mean she’s 40-years-old . The concert was as amazing as the Montreal one. Justin was definitely happy and excited. Justin sang ‘Right Here’ live for the first time with Drake. I went crazy, I love them both so much. I felt like a proud Canadian . Those two days will always be stuck in my heart, I’ll never forget them. I’ve met so many fans, had a lot of great times and experiences. I will always be grateful for everything that happened. Thank you for reading this. Hope it gave you guys hope that dreams DO happen. If mine became reality, yours will too. -Maryam (@ShawtyManeMtl) Here is the original post: I’m Maryam from Montreal, Canada. Before telling you guys about…
