It was February 14th. I had never been a big fan of this day because I believe that love should be celebrated everyday of the year. Not just because there is a national holiday for it. But regardless, I decided I wanted to do something fun this year. I decided to take the day off and go to “The Happiest Place on Earth”, Disneyland. I went with my cousin and we got there as soon as the park opened. The day had already been going good. We were getting on rides, taking pictures with all the characters and having a blast. Then, just as we were passing by the Carousel, I see this guy in a stroller holding his adorable baby brother in his lap. He had a red hoodie and a big lady bug hat on his head. He also had a pair of Ray Bans covering his eyes. Even though he was trying desperately to fit in, when he strolled RIGHT BY ME , I knew it wasn’t just any kid.. It was the kid I go out of my way to support. The kid who’s movie I have at home. The one who I listen to whenever I feel down. It was JUSTIN BIEBER! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d just casually “run into” him anywhere. I couldn’t BELIEVE it! My cousin must have noticed my face in shock because she quickly asked “What’s wrong?” I grabbed her close and whispered the words I never thought I would. “I think that was Justin Bieber.” As I started my way back against the crowd, my cousin thought I was insane. She called for me but I had to take a second look at this kid. Once I got close enough, I seen Selena! I was completely star struck. I had been literally a foot away from THE WHOLE BIEBER FAMILY! That’s when the security popped out of nowhere! We asked for a picture and Justin kindly responded, “Sorry guys, no pictures today. This is just family time.” So we sat on a bench near by, stunned that we had actually just seen Justin at Disneyland on Valentines Day! As we were watching them get off the ride, they looked like they were very much enjoying their day (despite some people who were trying to make it hard for them). I noticed that there were some girls who had apparently been following them around & being very rude & disrespectful all day), so we walked away. Throughout the rest of the evening, as we were getting on rides and also enjoying our day, there he was. We actually had the pleasure of passing him or seeing him pass us a few times after. Even though I didn’t get a picture, it was nice just to have been in his presence. He truly is the most kindest kid ever! This may not be the best Bieber Experience of all, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. I can only hope that SOMEDAY I can get the chance to actually thank him for all that he does for us. And maybe get a picture too! All beliebers should have that experience. -@AlwaysAmber13 See the rest here: It was February 14th. I had never been a big fan of this day…
In footage from her MTV documentary ‘Stay Strong,’ the singer/actress explains the meaning behind her ink. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato in “Demi Lovato: Stay Strong” Photo: MTV Demi Lovato ‘s moving MTV documentary, “Stay Strong,” was named after the her two wrist tattoos, which pay homage to the mantra her fans would tell her while Lovato was in treatment. And in a special extra bit of footage, the singer/actress breaks down the meanings behind all of her ink. “I have about nine or ten tattoos. So, I have a lot of tattoos. The very first tattoo I got, I was sixteen. And I got ‘You make me beautiful’ on my ribs,’ she explains about the lyrics from the Bethany Dillon song “Beautiful.” “It’s one of my favorite songs ever and I got it because I was dealing with self-image issues.” Demi went on to tell the story behind her second tattoo, a feather behind her ear. “I got it a Warped Tour on a tour bus, and that just was stupid.” And that’s not the only tattoo she got on a bus at Warped Tour. Another year, she got a tattoo of a kiss mark on her wrist. “It’s my friend Heidi’s lips,” Lovato explained. “And then I have feathers down my ribs,” she said of another set of tattoos. “I have a cross on my hand and then I have ‘peace’ and ‘rock’n’roll’ on my fingers. My dad doesn’t know, but he’ll find out now.” While all of her ink means something to her, it’s the ones she got in the last year that really speak to her journey, such as the one on her right arm that reads “faith.” “It’s a matching tattoo with one of my friends I met in treatment. I didn’t think I was going to come out of treatment with a new best friend, but I did and obviously I believe in faith. Faith has gotten me to where I am today.” And Lovato shouts out her Lovatics, not only with the words “Stay” and “Strong” scrolled across her wrists, but with one other tattoo. “I got ‘Stay’ and ‘Strong’ on my wrists, and these actually were really meaningful to me,” she said. “My fans constantly said it the entire time I was in treatment … and while they said it they would also put a little heart. I have a signature heart that I dot my I’s with. So my fans would draw it on their wrists every day until I came out of treatment. And I thought, ‘What better way to thank them?’ That’s a connection I have with my fans I don’t see with many other people. And it’s really cool that I have that; it’s really special.” So, will she get more ink? “I have to stop! I am going to be covered in tattoos,” Lovato laughed during the live “After Show.” “I am so impulsive when it comes to it.” Want to win a copy of ‘Unbroken’ signed by Demi Lovato? A Video I made for Justin Bieber using the song “Dear Ben” by Jennifer Lopez. Lyrics: I just can’t control myself I cant be with no one else It seems Im addicted to the way you like to touch me I dont think they understand why I love at your command From the words you speak, so deep Our bodies meet, I had to have you I love you, youre perfect A manifestation of my dream You make my body feel about a million different things I think God made you for me, a mix of passion and fidelity Baby, youre so complete I write this song to let you know that you will always be to me My lust, my love, my man, my child, my friend and my king I love you, youre perfect A manifestation of my dream You make my body feel about a million different things There’s no way Id leave you Its just not a reality Sometimes I feel like Im living in a fantasy http://www.youtube.com/v/Dhm4-8W9WwU?version=3&f=videos&app=youtube_gdata Read more from the original source: Dear Ben (Justin Bieber Video) with lyrics
What do you get when you fold two decades’ worth of young stars — and one very confused-looking Tom Sizemore — into a cautionary tale about the perils of meth use? Try Meth Head , a swear-y, scream-y, violent and thoroughly destabilizing journey to the depths of the worst known addiction this side of Words With Friends. Your venerable guides: Lukas Haas, Wilson Cruz, Scott Patterson and a laconic Sizemore among others. It’s the feel-bad movie of 2012, coming soon to a festival near you! To wit, from a press release: Kyle Peoples never wanted to be the man he has become in his 30s, an accountant stuck in a dead end job, with a lover who is more successful than he and a family that doesn’t get him at all. So when a night of partying leads to a new family of friends and fun, Kyle sees an opportunity for escape from reality. But Kyle’s new friendship with Maia and Dusty and the trio’s love of crystal meth eventually cost Kyle his job, his companion, his home and his family. Kyle’s escape becomes his trap, the party is an illusion and the crystal is slowly killing him, physically and psychologically. When he finally bottoms out and is no longer the young man his father once boasted about with pride, Kyle must choose: life or meth. Yikes. This thing has me wanting to go to rehab. Festival premieres are forthcoming, according to the release; stay tuned to Movieline for more details as events warrant. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
Some folks out there may have enjoyed Billy Crystal ‘s ninth outing as host of the Academy Awards last night, but his turn was as tepid as James Franco’s 2011 “performance” was bizarre. Crystal’s Oscars -themed song and dance routine? Dated. The weak banter and soft barbs at Hollywood’s gathered illuminati? Snoozeville. Given that the previously and frequently great Crystal was upstaged by the night’s random moments ( Angelina Jolie’s leg, J. Lo’s boob, those Cirque du Soleil acrobats ) and young, actually funny presenters (the Bridesmaids crew and Emma Stone) it’s time to start anew and refresh what’s already known as the fussiest night in the film calendar. In other words: Who would make the ultimate, charismatic, hilarious, non-sucky Oscar host? Let’s start by taking anyone who already hosted the Oscars off the board, for freshness’ sake; that includes 2005 host Chris Rock , who provided last night’s telecast with a much-needed jolt of real talk hilarity as he presented Best Animated Feature. Or, say, Ellen Degeneres , Emmy-nominated for her 2006 turn, who was nonetheless all over the tube Oscar night in those movie-themed JC Penney ads. The tradition of hiring comedians to host is a longstanding one that paid off in spades in the days of Bob Hope (who hosted a record 18 shows). But these days even the most daring, subversive stand-ups (read: the funny ones) run up against the stifling sense of decorum perpetuated by the older-skewing Academy; it seems you either get an “edgier” host who dares to push the envelope and draw in the coveted younger demographic — Bieber alone can’t cut it, even if the ill-advised blackface gets press — or you hire a safe host who won’t go too far and bore everyone to death. In fairness to Crystal, he was saddled with an awfully boring script. The few sparks of life only came in the odd ad-lib or when he roasted celebs in the audience, but even that devolved into easy mean jokes. (Leave Nick Nolte alone!) Another past Oscar trend was to cast a slew of famous actors to host the night — charismatic personalities who split hosting duties and draw in diverse viewers. In 1974 it was the eclectic mix of John Huston, Burt Reynolds, David Niven, Diana Ross; a year later the Academy tapped Sammy Davis Jr, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, and Shirley MacLaine. Why not get the modern day equivalent of an A-lister superteam to host? I’m not talking Anne Hathaway and James Franco, but George Clooney ! Robert Downey Jr.! Sandra Bullock! Cute little Emma Stone, for goodness sake! Then again, maybe there are celebrities out there who could reinvigorate the Oscars solo: Oprah, for one? The talk show titan was batted around last year as a potential Oscar host before then-telecast co-producer Brett Ratner hired Eddie Murphy (who would also probably be great, if he were to come back). I’d watch an entire telecast hosted by Zach Galifianakis, even if it was a three-hour parade of weirdness on par with his and Will Ferrell’s crash cymbals gag. If the Academy’s older membership and demographic knew who the hell he was, Louis C.K. would be fantastically entertaining. And then there’s Sacha Baron Cohen… I’ll turn it over to you, Movieliners — who would make the perfect audience-grabbing, attention-holding non-snoozeworthy Oscar host… and would the Academy ever bite?
SMH: St. Louis residents expressed outrage this week over a “Battle of the Complexions” contest scheduled for Friday night, but the event’s promoters said they organized it to honor African-American women and regretted any “misunderstanding.” The event was set for 9 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) at a nightclub in St. Louis. Promotional materials, including the poster pictured at right, promised a contest to see which African-American women are most attractive — those with light skin, those with brown skin or those with dark skin. “This is the most debatable topic of the year, whats the sexiest skin complexion?? So ladies come out & lets settle this!!” the promoters — Mack TV, a video and music promotional company, and a local “men’s entertainment” promoter calling himself Nelly Da’Celeb — said on a Facebook page for the event, which msnbc.com is not linking to because of extreme language. Adolphus Pruitt, president of the St. Louis chapter of the NAACP, said the event “raises the … hair on the back of people’s necks like me and some other folks.” “Folks who buy into it, support it, feed into it, they’re just assuring that using race — using the skin complexion of women, devaluating women and things of this nature — is going to continue to happen, because as long as people spend money to take advantage of it, somebody’s going to use it as a promotional tool,” Pruitt told NBC station KSDK. After the contest was highlighted this week by Kevin C. Johnson, a music writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, negative reaction was swift and loud. Camille Houston, an African-American woman from St. Louis, told KSDK that she found the promotion offensive because it perpetuates historical divisions in the African-American community centered on skin tone. “Some guys will say, ‘I don’t like talking to dark-skinned girls,’ or, you know, some girls will say. ‘I don’t like talking to dark-skinned guys,’” Houston said. In a post Thursday on Nelly Da’Celeb’s personal Facebook page, Mack TV and Nelly Da’Celeb said they understood why some people were upset but that the event would go on: MACK TV WOULD LIKE TO CLEAR UP THE MISUNDERSTANDING OF OUR CONCEPT FOR THIS PARTY…ITS NOT TO DEGRADE WOMEN OR DIVIDE SKIN COLORS. ITS SIMPLY TO SEE WHICH COMPLEXION OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN RACE REPRESENTS THE MOST (lightskinned, caramel-brown, or darkskinned) AS A WHOLE , MALE & FEMALE! I CAN SEE THE MISUNDERSTANDING WITH OUR PROMO…..WE COULD HAVE USED A BETTER CHOICE OF WORDS….WE DID NOT MEAN TO OFFEND THE OFFENDED ITS BLACK HISTORY MONTH , SO WE MADE A PARTY THEME DEDICATED TO OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN CROWD. THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS LOVING THIS PARTY BECAUSE HERE’S THE FIRST TIME EVER YOU CAN COME OUT & BE PROUD THAT YOU ARE BLACK!! REGARDLESS OF YOUR SKIN TONE SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION & MISLEADING INFO. ITS BLACK HISTORY MONTH , SO LETS BE PROUD OF THE SKIN WE’RE IN!! REPRESENT YOUR COMPLEXION! Thoughts on this?!?!?! Source Photo: Facebook More On Bossip! Smackdown! “Nothing will come from this if you win!” joked Seth Rogen as he opened his hosting gig at the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards . “Absolutely nothing. This won’t help you get paid anymore — if anything, it proves you’ll work for nothing.” That may be painfully true for many of the indie film nominees honored today at the annual Spirit Awards, held in a tent on the beach in balmy Santa Monica. But what does it mean that the night’s big winner was the Harvey Weinstein-backed awards season juggernaut The Artist ? The Oscar frontrunner swept the Spirit Awards Saturday in a precursor to what most pundits expect will transpire Sunday night at the Academy Awards ; the black and white silent film took home four awards, including Best Feature, Best Director ( Michel Hazanavicius ), Best Actor ( Jean Dujardin ), and Best Cinematography, further sealing its grip on the 2012 awards race. Along the road to Spirit Awards victory, the $15 million The Artist went up against the likes of more conventional indies. (Rules of eligibility includes films made for no more than $20 million.) In the Best Cinematography category, the Weinstein-backed favorite competed against, for example, Evan Glodell’s Bellflower , a film shot on a production budget of $17,000; for Best Feature it vied with 50/50 , Beginners , Drive , Take Shelter , and The Descendants . Additional winners on the night included Dee Rees’ Pariah , Alexander Payne’s The Descendants (which won Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Shailene Woodley), Asgar Farhadi’s A Separation , Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn , and Christopher Plummer for Beginners . (Full winners list here .) In other words – on the whole, not quite so different from the field competing tomorrow at the mainstream Oscars. Maybe that’s why, after Rogen’s fantastic Hollywood-skewering opening monologue, the Spirit Awards started to flag a bit in, well, spirit. By the time the absent Jean Dujardin won Best Actor about halfway through (co-star Penelope Ann Miller, the film’s mascot for the night, accepted on his behalf) the certainty of Artist domination seemed to loom in the air. Once Michel Hazanavicius arrived, fresh from the LAX runway with a police escort minutes before his name was called as Best Director, the sweep was sealed. Would any non-Oscar frontrunning independent filmmaker honorees have gotten the VIP treatment all the way down the 10? Were these the Oscar rehearsals, or the preeminent celebration of American independent film? Well, at least the show had its moments. Highlights included Rogen’s monologue; John Waters acting as MC for the night; Michelle Williams accepting her trophy with a nod to the very first Spirit Awards she ever attended, back when she wore her own clothes and cut her own hair and felt at home in the “room full of misfits, outcast, loners, dreamers, mumblers, delinquents, dropouts – just like me.” Backstage, winners trickled in throughout the night, sharing their own perspectives on craft and the awards show mania. Christopher Plummer , Best Supporting Actor: The jovial Plummer kicked off the winners’ room. “[Michael’s father, his character] was a true character and was written with such affection, such a lack of self-pity. It was fun to do, it made me so relaxed. His marvelous humor against all odds [is] a marvelous lesson to everyone who goes through cancer and dying. He treated it with a sort of carefree sense of humor, no self-pity at all.” Hinting at his next gig on an HBO project, Plummer addressed his continuing career at age 82. “I have to [keep acting] because I may croak at any moment – I have to keep going!” How did he keep from being upstaged by Cosmo the dog on the set of Beginners ? “We had a little private talk, and now that you mention it Cosmo and Uggie , I think our Cosmo was much more human than Uggie . Uggie was just a trickster – our dog had soul .” Shailene Woodley , Best Supporting Actress: “I’m so grateful,” Woodley began. “I don’t know if ‘surprised’ is the right word. I think gratitude kind of fills it all. It’s been such a beautiful experience for me in my life and totally transformed me as a human being, so I’m grateful to have been a part of the film and to have learned so many valuable amazing lessons.” “Every single person involved in the film was incredibly positive and had such gentle, kind, graceful souls. Being on the film as an 18-year-old and experiencing that right as I was about to start my life on my own, it was kind of the catalyst for me coming into my own. I don’t think there are words for me to express my gratitude for that.” As for the Oscars, Woodley has love for the Help star she went up against during the Golden Globes. “I am so stoked for Octavia [Spencer] – she is so awesome! She’s such a nice human being. [Pause] This is crazy. I was not expecting it and I got up there and said um a lot, I’m sure I’m going to be mortified when I watch it.” The Artist crew, Best Feature/Best Actor/Best Cinematography/Best Director: What did producer Harvey Weinstein bring to the film? “His weight,” joked producer Thomas Langmann, who credited Weinstein with taking a chance on The Artist when most backers balked. “We kept going to try to finance this meeting and we had very short meetings… nobody wanted to hear about this one. People told me this is against conventional wisdom. We managed to find the money and wanted to shoot here in Hollywood…” “This movie was made to be a tribute to Hollywood and cinema and especially American cinema. So to come back… and be rewarded by the Hollywood community, is a dream come true.” How’s life treating director Hazanavicius, who’s been on a nonstop tour through the home stretch of his award tour? “It’s not the worst job you can find,” he answered. “You come, you receive awards, everyone is smiling at you and is nice and they tell you you’re talented and have a very funny, charming French accent. [The police escort from LAX] was great. That was the best part.” “It’s physically tiring but the energy is so good that you don’t really feel it,” he said. “We’re really excited and are enjoying every moment we can enjoy.” Looking back to the beginning of their journey, did Weinstein promise the Artist crew he could get them to the Oscars? “Harvey knows how to promise things like that, yes. Sometimes he’s right.” Michelle Williams, Best Actress: “My friend was joking that until now I have been the Susan Lucci of the Indie Spirit Awards!” Williams said, beaming. “I have been luckier and luckier to be working with better and better people.” On how she found her way into Marilyn Monroe: “In a way you had to remove the fact that she was an icon, because that was too daunting… and think of her as an ordinary girl. There wasn’t a direct path in to her, I found. The only way in was time, so much time, and in a way letting her dictate, letting her take shape — letting all this information take shape instead of me trying to control it.” “I just do some work. I just sort of keep my head down, which is a very sort of Montana attitude. There’s this Amish thing, this Quaker thing I like – ‘Eyes to the ground and heart to the skies.’ I just keep focused.” Steve James, dir. The Interrupters , Best Documentary: “It means a lot for a film like this because this is a film about urban violence in Chicago, and when we were making it we never would have anticipated the reaction the film has gotten in the past year. It means a lot for what the film’s about and for us as independent filmmakers – I’ve been doing this now for 27 years, so it means a lot.” Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
