‘X Factor’ Says Goodbye To Stereo Hogzz

For the second straight week, Paula Abdul’s groups end up in the bottom two, with Lakoda Rayne joining the Hogzz. By Adam Graham Stereo Hogzz on “X Factor” Photo: FOX Paula Abdul’s groups just can’t catch a break. On Thursday’s (November 10) results episode of “The X Factor,” Abdul’s two remaining groups in the competition — Stereo Hogzz and Lakoda Rayne — ended up as the bottom two vote-getters following Wednesday’s performance episode. Both groups were forced to sing for their lives in front of the panel of judges, and after a dramatic 3-1 vote — where an emotional Abdul nearly gave up her right to vote — Stereo Hogzz were shown the door. It was the second week in a row that two of Abdul’s groups occupied the bottom two and faced elimination. Ms. “Forever Your Girl” originally refused to participate in the final vote, pleading, “I’m not gonna do this. I’m too close to both acts, and I love them both,” causing a frustrated Cowell to none-too-subtly rub his eye with his middle finger. Eventually, Abdul cast her vote for Lakoda Rayne to go, leaving the final vote in the hands of Cowell, who sent the Hogzz packing. The Houston fivesome took their elimination in stride, saying they were blessed for the chance to be on the show. Abdul returned the compliment: “I’m blessed to have worked with such amazing talent,” she said. “These guys are the real deal and gentlemen to work with.” For their final save performance, Stereo Hogzz — who were also in the bottom two last week — sang Michael Jackson’s “You Are Not Alone,” while Lakoda Rayne turned in a slightly twangy version of the Chris Brown/ Jordin Sparks duet “No Air.” The night prior, Rayne earned high marks for their version of Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You,” while Simon Cowell criticized the Hogzz following their gender-flipped version of Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man” for being too “cabaret” and for not doing the sort of song they would make in the studio. Earlier in the show, host Steve Jones asked Abdul what it was like to again have two of her groups staring down death’s door. “It is a nightmare situation. I can’t say any other words,” Abdul said. But in typical sunshiny fashion, she had words of encouragement for her students: “They’re magical, and they’re going to go on to sell records no matter what.” The upside for Abdul? Since she only has one group left, next week she can’t be the only judge with contestants in the bottom two. The episode also saw performances from Willow Smith , who debuted her new single “Fireball,” and Jessie J , who showcased her latest single “Domino.” At the top of the show, the top 11 contestants performed Swedish House Mafia’s “Save the World (Tonight).” What did you think of Thursday’s “X Factor” results episode? Nickelback’s ‘Bottoms Up’: The Real Party Rock Anthem

We hammer down with the year’s most brilliantly unapologetic banger, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Chad Kroeger of Nickelback Photo: Getty Images I don’t want to talk about Lana del Ray’s lips, chillwave or Drake’s feelings anymore. Those topics are all bookish and ultimately pointless, the kind of things debated by folks who enjoy nothing quite as much as the sound of their own voice, discussion points during shift breaks at the co-op or between courses at winter solstice parties. You know, nerd stuff. No, today, I want to talk about Nickelback , and their stupendous new single “Bottoms Up,” a song that is about nothing more than getting totally sh–faced, and one whose brilliance I am unapologetically in awe of. To the uninitiated, “Bottoms Up” is one of two singles Nickelback released simultaneously last month, in the lead-up to their sure-to-be-massive Here and Now album. It is not the one that features lines like “Hand in hand forever/ That’s when we all win,” because that’s the bruising ballad “When We Stand Together.” It is very much the one about consuming every inebriating substance under the sun, a list that includes, but is not limited to: Jim Beam, Jack Daniel’s, Black-Tooth Grins — Dimebag certainly would’ve approved — 80-proof hooch and, of course, “straight gasoline.” In other words, it is the kind of song a band like Nickelback (who, and take this however you wish, seem to write songs only as excuses to finance their latest Can-Am three wheeler ) was practically placed on this earth to write. It is not, by any means, a smart song — it is a sublimely stupid one, in which frontman Chad Kroeger growls about wanting to “kick a hole in the sky” and rhymes “bar” with “fire” — mainly because he can — over a bed of snarling, skuzzy riffs and flammable solos (and drums that sound like they were lifted from Eddie Money ). It seems destined to take its rightful place alongside tracks like AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” or Ratt’s “Round and Round” on strip-club playlists all across this great land. It sounds like it was unearthed from a time capsule buried in 1999 (or 1984), which automatically makes it the most rock-and-roll song released this year. So why is it brilliant? Well, several reasons spring to mind. For starters, there’s the chorus, which goes ” ‘NOTHER ROUND/ FILL ‘ER UP/ HAMMER DOWN/ GRAB A CUP/ BOTTOMS UP!” (CAPS mine, but, I mean, if it were possible to sing in ALL CAPS, Nickelback would certainly do it here.) It’s sort of ingenious in a totally not-genius way and will instantly worm its way into your brain. There are the reactions the song gets from folks I’ve played it for, which run the gamut from “Two minutes in and all I want to do is shotgun a beer” and “This should be the official song of being in a boat on a lake” to “It sounds like Slaughter.” There’s the fact that I’ve listened to it something like 467 times since I interviewed the band last week, and it’s made me want to do pushups, fight someone, put the hammer down and go to the bathroom. But most of all, it’s that its very existence proves that no one knows their audience quite like Nickelback. Because unlike Coldplay , Linkin Park or Metallica — who are busy making electro albums , albums that reference the Bhagavad Gita and albums with Lou Reed , respectively — Nickelback know better than to mess with what got them here. “Bottoms Up” is an unabashed ode to boozing it up, keeping the good times rolling and setting things ablaze. It is precisely the kind of jam their fans want to hear them making, the soundtrack to Saturday night and a million tailgate extravaganzas. It is big and bold and brash and ballsy, because that’s exactly the kind of band Nickelback are. There will be no Rihanna cameos , thank you very much. And I’m not just making this up, either. Kroeger told me as much when I sat down with him, admitting that “Bottoms Up” may very well be their masterwork. “It’s a drinking anthem. I mean, it’s harder to write those songs than it is to write those social-awareness type songs — it really is. Some of the stuff’s got to be a little tongue-in-cheek. There’s got to be some clever stuff there, you know, and you’ve got to be descriptive. But when you get done listening to it, you need to have the feeling of just wanting to grab a bottle of Jack. And I think we got there, because we’d bring friends over all the time, and it was just like, ‘You are now a test subject! Hit play; turn it up nice and loud.’ And the song’s over, and they’d be like, ‘I want to drink. I want to drink something right now. ‘ And we were like, ‘Yes!’ ” Yes, indeed. Because listening to “Bottoms Up,” I am struck with no other notion quite as much as “I want to drink. I want to drink something right now, ” which means that in every conceivable way, the song is a success. Forget LMFAO and all their DayGlo excess; Nickelback don’t need that crap to make a “Party Rock Anthem.” You may hate them, but you cannot discount their brilliance — not any more. “Bottoms Up” is the kind of slammer no other band is capable of making, mostly because the bands that were making them no longer walk this earth. It is a market-tested, precision-guided party, with no hangover in sight. Because NB are smart enough to leave the headaches to the brainy folks. They just wanna rock. And drink. A lot. Hammer down, now and forever. What do you think of the Nickelback party-starter? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nickelback

Amy Winehouse’s Death: Alcohol Expert Weighs In

‘This is not the first time we’re hearing about someone dying from an overdose of alcohol,’ Dr. Sam Zakhari tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Amy Winehouse ‘s cause of death was a result of the same factors that kill anyone who overindulges: she, literally, drank herself to death . It was revealed Wednesday (October 26) that Winehouse had more than five times the legal driving limit of alcohol in her body at the time of her July 23 death , which coroner Suzanne Greenway said unintentionally led to “such potentially fatal levels” that it caused the “Rehab” singer’s demise. Dr. Sam Zakhari, director of the Division of Metabolism and Health Effects at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, said what apparently befell Winehouse is not unlike what happens on college campuses every weekend. “This is not the first time we’re hearing about someone dying from an overdose of alcohol,” said Zakhari, who did not treat Winehouse and has no firsthand knowledge of her case, but who was speaking to MTV News as an expert on the public facts of the case. “You hear it quite frequently here in the U.S. about college students who drink themselves to death.” Zakhari said when an individual consumes too much alcohol too quickly, their blood alcohol level increases dramatically and it can rise rapidly to several times the legal limit for intoxication. “That inhibits what’s called the respiratory center, which is the area in the brain that controls [breathing]. When that is inhibited, people cannot breathe, period. That’s what causes their death.” Winehouse, 27, who famously struggled with drug and alcohol addiction during her short life and rapid rise to fame, was found in bed in her London apartment in July, and police said they discovered three bottles of vodka at the scene. The inquest found no sign of illegal drugs in her system, and a postmortem examination of her body found her vital organs in good health. The amount of alcohol in her system was enough to stop her breathing and possibly send her into a coma, according to officials. After initial autopsy results were inconclusive , the Grammy-winning singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, said his daughter had been drug-free for some time, suggesting that it was alcohol withdrawal that had killed her. But one of the singer’s doctors said Winehouse had begun drinking again a few days before her death after a long period of abstinence. Asked if Winehouse’s history of substance abuse had any impact on the way she died, Zakhari said that her background would not necessarily play a part in such a death. “Experience with alcohol doesn’t preclude a person from having respiratory arrest,” he said. “There’s no difference. Tolerance works within certain limits, but that would mainly [have an impact] on behavior.” In other words, someone who has never been drunk will exhibit more visible signs of inebriation after consuming large amounts, versus a person with a history of drinking. But that tolerance is quickly negated as the level of alcohol consumed rises. “A high concentration [of alcohol] will make that part of the brain cease to function regardless of whether that person is a chronic drinker or not,” he said. Jennifer Lopez Breaks Down On Stage After Singing About Love & Exes

See the article here:

Jennifer Lopez broke down crying on stage while performing at the Mohegan Sun Casino’s 15th anniversary celebration on Saturday. She walked off stage in the middle of singing. Before going into an acoustic version of her 1999 hit “If You Had My Love,” Lopez told the audience: “I’m going to sing you the last song I wrote about love. A lot has changed since then.” Words on a screen in the background read: “I want the fairy tale. I still believe in love.” She then began to perform “Until It Beats No More” where pairs of lookalikes resembling her and all her famous exes – Diddy, Cris Judd, Ben Affleck and Marc Anthony – re-enacted iconic scenes of her past life (yes, a dancer wearing the famous green Versace dress was there). When she began to sing “One Love,” she became noticeably emotional. “A little trip down memory lane, huh?,” she said to the crowd before wiping her eyes repeatedly and walking offstage. Coldplay Fans Find ‘Paradise’ During ‘Today’ Set

Band can’t make up its mind on the meaning of new album title Mylo Xyloto, and fans struggle to pronounce it for MTV News. By Uptin Saiidi Coldplay’s Chris Martin performing on the “Today” show Photo: Rob Kim/FilmMagic NEW YORK — Thousands of Coldplay fans wrapped around a dark Rockefeller Plaza on Friday morning (October 21) waiting to get into the group’s “Today” show performance. While most woke up before sunrise, some even camped out overnight to catch the seven-time Grammy-winning band perform. Coldplay satisfied their fans’ hunger, performing past hits like “Fix You” and “Viva la Vida” along with new singles “Paradise” and “Every Tear Drop Is a Waterfall.” Two early birds from Long Island missed part of their school day to catch the free show. “We woke up at 4 a.m., missed the train, took another train,” Rebecca Monachelli, 17, said. When asked if her parents were aware, the teen laughed, “My mom was the one who suggested to come here today!” A spray-painted set, in the identical colors of Coldplay’s new album cover, lit up the plaza as dawn approached. When “Today” co-anchor Matt Lauer asked about the set, frontman Chris Martin admitted, “It’s just random and fun. It’s just us throwing caution to the wind, we know it looks kind of amateur, but it comes from the heart.” The band’s fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, due Tuesday, is said to be the band’s most electronic album yet. MTV News took to the plaza to talk with fans and test their ability to pronounce the album title. Most fans laughed as they stumbled over the words Mylo Xyloto, while others confidently let it out. When the band was asked about the meaning behind the title, Martin said, “It doesn’t really mean anything. It just means a group of four English people who are trying to come up with something that had no other association … one day hopefully it’ll mean something.” Lauer quoted the band from a New York Times article, in which Martin had been quoted, “We came up with the idea of, what if you had musical digits, like xylo toes?” Martin smiled before responding, “I said that, but now I don’t mean that anymore. We’re still trying to figure out what to say. We should have figured it out before we came on national TV.” Did you catch Coldplay’s performance on “Today”? Share your reviews in the comments! Hilary Duff Finally Wears Preggo Clothes

Alright, this is more what I have in mind when I hear the words Hilary Duff and pregnant, some silly boots and sloppy period sweatpants are pretty much standard attire for women in her condition. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not pleased about it, but she was looking way too hot in her tight little outfits for a pregnant lady. Although to be fair, it’s only the bottom half that’s looking sloppy, the top half is actually pretty good. Women must be really be hating Hilary right now, she just makes everything look good. Pregnant or not.

Barack Obama on Keeping Up with the Kardashians Viewing: Really?!?

At home, like in the economic sector, Barack Obama would like to instill a few regulations for the common good. But he doesn’t always succeed. Case in point: Keeping Up with the Kardashians . Even the most loyal Tea Party members might have trouble deciding: Who is worse for this country? In a new interview with iVillage, Michelle Obama says she and her husband keep an eye on what daughters Sasha and Malia watch on television, but they can’t control all programming choices. “Barack really thinks some of the Kardashians – when they watch that stuff – he doesn’t like that as much,” the First Lady said , clearly trying to choose her words carefully. “But I sort of feel like… if they’re learning the right lessons, like, that was crazy, then I’m like, okay.” In other words: the actions of Kim Kardashian and kompany are crazy! But, hey, even if Tea Party members want you to believe this isn’t true with Obama in charge, it’s a free country. Watch what you want.
