Source: Max Hirschberger / Solange Over a year ago, I penned a piece on HelloBeautiful, How Black Hollywood Is Failing The Black Press , exploring how the difficulties of working as a Black journalist becomes exasperated by the prejudice we face on red carpets and the propensity for Black talent to trust white outlets with their stories and breaking news over us. The article went viral, sparking industry wide conversations about the importance of Black press in preserving our narratives. The moment made its way to the eyes and ears of some of Hollywood’s A-Listers, with BlackTreeTV journalist Jaleesa Lashay asking actor Sterling K Brown about the invisibility of Black journalists in the press room for the Sag Awards. Actor and comedian Lil Rel also tackled the issue head on, telling audiences at the MTV Movie Awards that he would always look to speak to Black journalists first on the red carpets he attends to bridge the discrimination gap. With numerous examples of Black stars coming forward to express their support and dedication for the Black Press over the past couple of months, Solange’s partnership with BlackPlanet is a build up of a year’s worth of momentum. BlackPlanet was launched in 2001 when the Internet was still infantile and computers weren’t pocket sized or convenient. Within the realm of endless possibilities for content, creator Omar Wasow sought to carve out a unique space for Black voices and Black connections online. Keep in mind, Wasow’s stroke of genius precludes the mammoth social media era kicked off by MySpace (2003) and Facebook (2004.). As always, Black people were ahead of the trend, forecasting that one day we would all look to create little webpage extensions of our personalities and lives on the web. In the height of BlackPlanet’s reign, we all immediately became web designers before we even knew the career existed—creatively using copy and paste HTML code to customize our pages with our favorite songs, patterns and designs. Beyond our personalized content, BlackPlanet formed its own online community, chock-full of opportunities to share news and gossip, build friendships, and most importantly, make love connections with a stranger. As social networking exploded into an Internet phenomenon, fickle audiences migrated to mainstream platforms, forgetting the sacred temple we had built for our memories and conversations in our own online tribe. This is why Solange’s desire to collaborate with BlackPlanet, the Black owned digital arm of the Urban One family, is such a pivotal industry shift. For once, mainstream outlets had to flock to a Black owned URL to find the latest project from a Black star. In a normal news cycle we are chasing the latest Twitter Trend, today, Black folks owned the conversation first. If this triumphant moment is a any indication to how Black celebs X Black press can work in tandem to drive the culture forward, the future looks bright and gorgeous AF. The “No Lie” rapper took to his Instagram page to call out Nike for biting the album art to his album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music and splashing it on the silhouette of their Valentine’s Day Zoom Fly SP. Designed by Nathan Bell, the sneaker does seem to not only feature the color of the album cover but the font used for the art and track listing. The Real Housewives of New Jersey season nine reunion trailer is here – and we are so ready for the action! The secrets, finger-pointing, tears, and vicious attacks are all in the first look at what’s to come. In the trailer, Teresa Giudice, Melissa Gorga, Margaret Josephs, Dolores Catania, Jennifer Alydin and Jacki Goldschneider all go at it, holding nothing back while evaluating last season’s drama. “You f-king coldhearted bitch,” Teresa screams at (probably) sister-in-law Melissa. But the main conflict appears to be among Teresa, Jackie, Margaret, and Jennifer, according to E! . RHONJ Season 9 Reunion Trailer More extreme yet totally impressive attacks get made throughout the sneak peek. “I lose brain cells talking to you,” Jackie tells Teresa. It’s ok if you laughed out loud, that is priceless. And at one point, Teresa calls Jackie a “white trash bitch,” and Jackie fights back with, “You’re not going to win a war of words with me.” “Really, bitch? You want to make a bet?” Teresa says. Jackie agrees to the bet. But come on, ours is totally on Teresa. She craves blood. Teresa then makes a move that looks as though things are about to get physical. And by the look of everyone’s faces, it probably does. Things start getting emotional as host Andy Cohen begins asking the hard questions about her future with husband Joe Giudice, and his possible deportation. “What you’re saying is that you will go your separate ways,” Cohen asks Teresa… who begins to break down in front of the camera. E! has learned that Teresa did, in fact, admit that she and Joe would go their separate ways should he be deported to Italy. But during a previous reunion, Teresa did say she would consider moving overseas. “I mean, Italy is a beautiful place to live.” And I’m sure a lot of the RHONJ castmates wouldn’t mind that. We can’t believe we’re writing this, but … … a new development in the Jussie Smollett investigation has caused authorities to wonder whether the Empire actor actually staged his own attack late last month. As previously reported, surveillance footage taken from the vicinity around where the alleged assault took place early on the morning of January 29 depicted two men walking down the sidewalk . Police released photos of these two men and labeled them as “persons of interest” in the investigation. Here is one of the images unveiled to the public by the Chicago PD a couple weeks ago: According to TMZ and other outlets, the two men featured above were picked up by cops at O’Hare Airport on Wednesday night and taken in for questioning. Moreover, per WBBM TV reporter Charlie De Mar, the homes of these individuals were raided yesterday. Now here is where things get legitimately weird and troubling: The suspects are of Nigerian descent and both appeared as extras on Empire. Multiple insiders have told the local ABC affiliate in Chicago that police are investigating whether Smollett worked with these two men to stage the assault because Smollet’s character was being written off Empire. To be clear, no one associated with the police department has commented on this possibility just yet. However, Rob Elgas – a reporter at ABC 7 in Chicago – Tweeted the details of this theory on Thursday evening. He added that Smollett did not appear for a scheduled interview on Thursday. Brad Edwards, a reporter at CBS Chicago, has also cited a source who said that investigators believe the “non-cooperating 2 witnesses are co-conspirators in a potentially staged attack.” Smollett and his team have claimed on numerous occasions that the star was approached by two assailants around 2 a.m. on January 29. They say these assailants hurled racial and anti-gay epithets in Smollet’s direction; that they screamed he was in “MAGA country;” that theu doused him in bleach; and that they tied a rope around his neck. The attack made national headlines, with 2020 Presidential candidates such as Kamala Harris and Cory Booker commenting on the hate crime and President Trump also labeling it as “horrible.” In the days since, however, some people have questioned the validity of Smollett’s story. They’ve wondered why he didn’t call the police right away and why he’s seemed hesitant to turn over his cell phone, and/or non-redacted records for his cell phone, to the authorities. Smollett, who si 36 years old and who has been openly gay since 2015, appeared on Good Morning America on Thursday . He fought off tears at various points while talking to Robin Roberts and addressed those who doubted his story. “You don’t even want to see the truth,” he said of these critics, adding: “It feels like if I had said it was a Muslim, or a Mexican, or someone black, I feel like the doubters would have supported me a lot much more. A lot more. “And that says a lot about the place that we are in our country right now.” Roberts asked Smollett about the time lapse between the attack and his 911 call, to which Smollett said the following… Jussie Smollett Speaks on Horrific Attack “There’s a level of pride there. “We live in a society where, as a gay man, you are considered somehow, to be weak, and I’m not weak. I am not weak. And we, as a people, are not weak.” He went on to say it was “offensive” and “ridiculous” to allege that he was lying about this assault. UPDATE : A lawyer for the two suspects has talked to the aforementioned CBS reporter, Edwards. She’s confirmed that the men do know Smollett from their work on Empire, telling the journalist: “They do know Jussie. They have worked with him on Empire. My preliminary investigations show that on set it’s very tight. “They’re all very cordial with each other, so they’re baffled why they are people of interest.” Edwards writes that police took bleach, shoes, electronics, receipts and other items from the home of these men — and he quotes a “TOP SOURCE” who sayss: Indicators point to Smollett orchestrating the event. This is a truly crazy twist. We aren’t about to rush to judgment in either direction, but we will keep readers apprised as more news breaks. UPDATE : 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment have released a statement in response to the rumor that Smollett was being written off Empire. It reads as follows: “The idea that Jussie Smollett has been, or would be, written off EMPIRE is patently ridiculous. He remains a core player on this very successful series and we continue to stand by him.” Again, we will update this article as more information comes in.
